“Lessons in Chemistry” star Aja Naomi King still finds hope in the devastating end to her character Harriet’s arc in the Apple TV+ drama series.
Based on real historical events, the show’s finale finds politicians passing the act that enabled the Santa Monica freeway construction that destroyed the Sugar Hill neighborhood in which Harriet and Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson) live. When Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman) first started at Hastings Lab before Elizabeth entered the picture and moved in with him, he forged a bond with Harriet and her husband Charlie (Paul James). Even before she grew closer to Elizabeth in the wake of Calvin’s death, Harriet advocated for the dismissal of building a freeway through her and Calvin’s neighborhood, which would render them homeless.
“The thing that I want people to take away is that it’s always worth it to fight. No matter what happens,...

The season finale of “Lessons in Chemistry” dropped over the Thanksgiving holiday, and the show’s three central female characters — Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson), Harriett Sloane (Aja Naomi King) and Avery Parker (guest star Rosemarie DeWitt) — ended up in places very different from Bonnie Garmus’ best-selling novel on which the show is based.
Harriet’s legal battle to prevent the construction of a freeway through her neighborhood ends on a less than triumphant note. Instead of returning to Hastings Lab as Garmus’ Zott does in the book, Larson’s Elizabeth finds her niche teaching chemistry while on her way to finally completing her doctorate in chemistry. The arrival of DeWitt’s character signals the theme of found family, which in Elizabeth’s case, truly did happen through the collision of atoms.
TheWrap recently chatted with showrunner Lee Eisenberg to unpack Elizabeth, Harriett and Avery’s fates. Tara Miele, who directed...

Cathryne Czubek’s documentary about an impoverished film-maker and an American superfan veers towards a white saviour narrative but the low-budget movie mogul’s charisma wins out
Here is a documentary about a self-taught film-maker from impoverished edgetown Wakaliga, near Kampala in Uganda, and the American fan who comes to meet him and becomes a collaborator. At first it looks like a bouncy, bright feelgood story barely disguising a white-saviour narrative under the surface; after all, that is what both director Cathryne Czubek and former publicist (and now fan) Alan Hofmanis are. That said, Czubek makes a concerted effort to crosscut between the viewpoints of Hofmanis and the charismatic figure who draws him to Uganda from New York in the first place: uber-low-budget movie mogul Isaac Nabwana, whose story rightly dominates.
Although former brickmaker Nabwana made thousands of bricks by hand (he demonstrates his technique with mud and frames for...

Roger Ebert said an Elvis Presley movie with Nancy Sinatra would become fodder for insomniacs. He compared it to the sitcom The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. The movie came out shortly before the ’68 Comeback Special.
Nancy Sinatra co-starred in one of Elvis Presley‘s movies. Superstar film critic Roger Ebert wasn’t impressed with either of their performances. Despite this, Elvis released two hit songs from the movie’s soundtrack.
Roger Ebert felt 1 of Elvis Presley’s movies captured none of his early charisma
In a 1988 interview published on RogerEbert.com, Ebert discussed Elvis’ movie Speedway. “Speedway is the late show of 20 years from now, I suppose,” he said. “What will it tell the insomniacs of 1988 about our society?
“For one thing, they will probably wonder why we considered Elvis a sex symbol,” he said.” He is as respectable on the screen as Dick Powell ever was,...

Haunted Mansion was launched as a theme park attraction at Disneyland in 1969. Riders get strapped inside “doom buggies” and whisked through a spooky old manor with chills and thrills around every corner. The ride doesn’t end at the last stop, either. A mirror along the exit captures the image of a phantom prankster attaching itself to each visitor. For Disney’s upcoming Haunted Mansion film, director Justin Simien wants to bring that feeling home.
“My number one goal as a filmmaker is to make sure you actually get haunted,” Simien tells Den of Geek magazine. “I was nine when I rode the Haunted Mansion at Disney World, and you couldn’t tell me that dude was not still over my shoulder all around the park.”
The feeling never left, so Simien brought that spirit to pitch meetings.
