Joey King is speaking out about her “Kissing Booth” co-star Jacob Elordi’s criticism of their hit Netflix rom-com franchise.
“I think it’s unfortunate anyone would feel that way,” King told me Saturday at the Balenciaga fashion show in Los Angeles. “I had a great time making those movies no matter what anyone says.”
Elordi disappointed the casts of the three “The Kissing Booth” films as well as their fans when he slammed the film in his GQ Men of the Year cover story. “I didn’t want to make those movies before I made those movies,” he told the magazine. “Those movies are ridiculous. They’re not universal. They’re an escape.”

“The Kissing Booth” actor Taylor Zakhar Perez says he was surprised by co-star Jacob Elordi’s criticism of the rom-com franchise.
“I thought it was a shame because to my knowledge, everybody else had such a wonderful experience,” Perez told me Thursday at the GQ Men of the Year party at Bar Marmont in West Hollywood.
“It’s a shame that was his experience on the set. Especially when those movies came out, it was a time when we really needed something like that,” he said, alluding to the Covid pandemic. “I know from our fan interactions, getting stopped everywhere I go, what ‘Kissing Booth’ means to people and what it brought them during such a dark time. I guess the silver lining is he still made people laugh and feel good.”
Elordi sparked headlines earlier this week by bashing the franchise in his GQ Men of the Year cover story.

Exclusive: Vince Marcello (The Kissing Booth trilogy) is set to showrun and executive produce Diva, a new drama series inspired by the exploits of real-life French heroine Julie d’Aubigny, from iGeneration Studios. Marcello co-created the series with Max Benitz — who will serve as its head writer — and will also direct a portion of its episodes.
Billed as a period adventure-drama told through a very contemporary lens, Diva chronicles D’Aubigny’s rise from an impoverished servant in 1680s France to battle rogues and royalty alike, in her quest to conquer the stage as the opera singer otherwise known as La Maupin. The show set amidst some of Europe’s most iconic settings, including Louis Xiv’s Palace of Versailles, the backstreets of Paris and Marseille, and the lavender-filled hillsides of Provence, will then watch as La Maupin finds fame, fortune and love – with both men and women – along the way.

How many movies does it take to tell a story about high school senior Elle Evans (Joey King) trying to decide whether to honor her friendship to lifelong bestie Lee (Joel Courtney) or break the “rules” by dating his smoking-hot older brother, Noah (Jacob Elordi)? If you’re Netflix — the content factory that milked “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” for its full trilogy potential — then the answer is three, obviously. Except the makers of “The Kissing Booth” didn’t have a solid book series to fall back on, nor a compelling romantic rivalry to stretch across multiple movies.
What they did have was the data to suggest audiences wanted more. I too wanted more — less of the same, but a little substance for a change. How great would it be if Elle found enough self-respect to pursue her own dreams, rather than deciding her future according to which...

Netflix’s “The Kissing Booth” franchise began with sexist and retrograde attitudes toward its high school-age lead characters, then evolved into a collection of romantic tropes and tricks that give the genre a bad name. Now we are left with the final insult: Three films in, this series still doesn’t get its leading lady. In the face of icky writing, limp directing, awful pacing, horrific green screen, and terrible jokes, star Joey King spent three film adaptations of Beth Reeckles’ YA novels injecting heart and humor into her Elle Evans. Still,

Aside from a conveyor belt of romcoms, the popular platform has struggled to find any big new names. Can it learn anything from old-fashioned cinema?
Ahead of the Cannes film festival earlier this month, its artistic director, Thierry Frémaux, asked a good question: “What directors have been discovered by [streaming] platforms?” He called on journalists to name one. Nobody shouted out, “What about Vince Marcello, who gave us The Kissing Booth?” Nobody could name any at all, in fact. Cannes and Netflix have been engaged in their own saga over the soul of cinema in recent years but Frémaux raised an important point: streaming services have transformed the landscape to the point they threaten the very survival of theatrical cinema. But what are they building in its place?

Netflix knows what the people want and is ready to give it to us! Well, in due time. A mere two days after the premiere of The Kissing Booth 2 in July 2020, cast members Joey King, Joel Courtney, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Taylor Zakhar Perez, and Meganne Young announced that a third film was not only coming, but had already been filmed! Nearly a year later, we finally have a release date: Aug. 11.
While the cast have been hush-hush on what exactly the film will focus on, we already have a good idea. A special first look at the film shows Elle (King), Noah (Jacob Elordi), Lee (Courtney), and Rachel (Young) at the Flynn house the summer after graduation. Elle is dodging calls from Harvard admission, which means she still hasn't decided where she wants to go for college and hasn't told anyone about having been accepted to both Harvard and Berkeley.

When To All the Boys I've Loved Before premiered on Netflix in 2018, it was instantly hailed as a romantic comedy sensation. Critics centered much of this acclaim on the film's director, Susan Johnson, for infusing the story with its jubilant tone and lending her eye to smaller touches like the production design of Lara Jean's (Lana Condor) home, which was curated to represent the character's Asian heritage.
When Johnson bowed out of directing the sequel due to prior commitments, the reins were passed off to a male director, Michael Fimognari - a move that arguably resulted in diminishing returns from the franchise's inferior latter chapters. But the To All the Boys series is just one example of a frustrating pattern in the film industry: female directors establish female-focused romance franchises with strong first installments, only to be booted to make space for male successors.

Exclusive: WME and Anonymous Content have signed young actor Taylor Zakhar Perez, who is coming off of a breakout role on the Vince Marcello-helmed hit Netflix franchise The Kissing Booth.
Based on the YA novel by Beth Reekles, the teen rom-com follows the romantic adventures of Elle, played by Joey King, her bad-boy boyfriend Noah (Jacob Elordi), and her best friend Lee (Joel Courtney). Perez first appeared in last year’s Kissing Booth 2, in the role of Marco, a handsome, charismatic new classmate who complicates Elle’s love journey.
Netflix reported that The Kissing Booth 2 was viewed by more than 65 million people in the first four weeks on the platform.
Perez is set to return for the third installment, which will debut this summer. It picks up where the second one left off. It’s the summer before Elle heads to college, and she has a secret decision to make.

When “The Kissing Booth 2” premiered on July 24, Taylor Zakhar Perez had about 70,000 followers on Instagram. Within a week, he had three million.
But that should come as no real surprise because Perez is the newest hottie in the “Kissing Booth” franchise. Directed, co-written and produced by Vince Marcello, the sequel to Netflix’s hit 2018 film finds Elle (Joey King) as a senior in high school and caught in a love triangle with the new guy at school (Perez) and boyfriend Noah (Jacob Elordi), now a freshman at Harvard.

The Kissing Booth landed on Netflix in the Summer of 2018 to fanfare from those it was aimed at, with many enjoying it’s simplistically sweet high-school love story and characters who had a chemistry that pushed it up a touch. Just a few days after “The Kissing Booth 2” debuted on Netflix, the streaming service announced a third movie in the teen romance franchise is in the works.
And there’s more good news for Elle (Joey King) and Noah (Jacob Elordi) fans: “The Kissing Booth 3” was secretly shot at the same time as the sequel, so filming is already complete. It’s currently in post-production and will premiere on Netflix in 2021. The entire cast — including King, Joel Courtney, Elordi, Taylor Zakhar Perez and Molly Ringwald — will return for the follow-up.
“It was the hardest secret to keep,” Courtney said Sunday during a live YouTube event with the cast .
Despite negative reviews from critics, “The Kissing Booth” series has been wildly popular among teen audiences at Netflix. After the first film was released in 2018, Netflix reported it was one of its most-rewatched original films that year.

“The Kissing Booth 2,” the second installment in Netflix’s wildly popular franchise, is currently No. 1 on the streamer’s viewing charts. Riding high off the popularity of the new film and the 2018 original, both directed by Vince Marcello, Netflix has given the go-ahead on a third movie. But perhaps the most exciting piece of news, as reported by Deadline, is that “The Kissing Booth 3” has already finished filming after shooting quietly alongside “Kissing Booth 2” last year in South Africa. Marcello is reported to be currently in post-production on the film, which Netflix will launch sometime in 2021. Netflix confirmed the news to IndieWire.
The news was revealed by star and executive producer Joey King during a live-stream fan event hosted on Sunday. The third film will continue to explore the romantic ups and downs of Elle (King), her boyfriend Noah (Jacob Elordi), and her Bff Lee (Joel Courtney). “The Kissing...

Exclusive: Netflix on board for a third installment of The Kissing Booth, the continuing romantic adventures of Elle (Joey King), her hunky hot tempered boyfriend Noah (Jacob Elordi) and her best friend Lee (Joel Courtney). Vince Marcello, who adapted and directed the first two films from the novels that Beth Reekles originally self-published through Wattpad, has already finished shooting the third installment, and is in post-production on it.
King, the star and exec producer, just revealed the news during a livestream fan event. The film was quietly shot in tandem with The Kissing Booth 2 in South Africa, and it will be released in 2021. The third installment picks up where the second one left off. It’s the summer before Elle heads to college, and she has a secret decision to make. She has been accepted into Harvard, where boyfriend Noah is matriculating, and also Berkeley, where her Bff Lee (Noah’s brother) is headed.

Elle has a brand new love interest in The Kissing Booth 2, and he's giving Noah a run for his money. In the Netflix sequel, Elle finds herself drawn to the new guy in school named Marco, played by Taylor Zakhar Perez. Not only is he incredibly attractive and charming, but he's also a musician. Swoon! Throughout the movie, Marco shows off his musical skills as he performs at the Halloween party and on the street. Of course, our main thought after watching the movie was: is that really Perez singing and playing guitar?
The short answer is yes! During an interview with Popsugar, Perez confirmed that he's really performing during those scenes. "I practiced my butt off," he said about the musical moments in the film. "I was super, super lucky to have [the film's director Vince Marcello], who has a crazy amazing musical background, being an actor on Broadway. He was...

Well, it’s official: Thanks to the coronavirus — and the kind of real-world disaster-movie mayhem that even Hollywood couldn’t invent — summer movie season is canceled. Now that “Tenet” and “Mulan” have both scrapped their summer U.S. theatrical release plans, there’s nothing even remotely resembling a blockbuster on the horizon.
The good news — and there is good news — is that we’re deep enough into this pandemic that distributors have figured out how to release their films virtually, and in some cases, to drive-ins and those few hardtop venues safe (or stubborn) enough to remain open. That means moviegoers can see thrillers “The Rental” and “Amulet,” as well as Vinnie Jones starrer “The Big Ugly,” in select theaters this week, while movie-stayers — those living under lockdown, or simply too cautious to return to cinemas — can order the same movies on demand.
Meanwhile, the streaming services continue to thrive.

Netflix’s continued forays into the wide world of romantic comedies — wildly popular with film fans, often overlooked by the studio system — has seen plenty of ups and downs. The streaming giant won acclaim for series like “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” and one-offs like “Set It Up,” but its romcom picks are just as prone to flaming out as setting the world on fire. While Vince Marcello’s 2018 adaptation of Beth Reekles’ Ya novel “The Kissing Booth” scored big in terms of viewership, critical appraisals were not so kind; with a 17 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is one of Netflix’s worst-reviewed originals.

From its auspicious beginning as a novel written by then-15-year-old author Beth Reekles on the self-publish site Wattpad, to its wildly popular film debut on Netflix, “The Kissing Booth” has proven itself a hit. It spoke to its target audience without speaking down to them, telling the story of a young woman confronted with the challenge of choosing between a longterm relationship with her male best friend or a budding romance with his hotter older brother. Though its imaginatively named sequel “The Kissing Booth 2” hits similar beats, themes and emotional touchstones, it delivers a few refreshing details by giving the heroine more agency in her quest to find happiness — yet not quite enough to justify its interminable run time.

Vince Marcello, co-writer and director of “The Kissing Booth 2,” knew he needed an opening scene that quickly updated fans of the original with what Elle (Joey King) did over the summer after high school sweetheart Noah (Jacob Elordi) graduated and left for Harvard. Adding to the degree of difficulty: Marcello had to create visual references to Los Angeles in the sequence, even though the sequel, which hits Netflix on July 24, was shot in South Africa.
“The idea I had was to acquaint you with the character in a really fast way that was fun, energetic and exciting,” explains the director, who used snapshots of time — Elle at the beach, watching TV and working on her college essay — as the couple try to maintain their relationship from afar.
Marcello called on cinematographer Anastas Michos, who framed the first film, to deliver his vision — a flurry of images mixed with music and voiceover.

“The Kissing Booth 2,” the sequel to Netflix’s popular teen rom-com, will debut on the streaming service this summer. The follow-up — again starring Joey King, Joel Courtney and Jacob Elordi — drops on Netflix on July 24.
King shared the news Thursday night during a live event on YouTube, where she was joined by fellow cast members to share secrets about the upcoming movie.
“The Kissing Booth” became a breakout hit among teen audiences when it premiered in 2018. At the time, Netflix reported that it was one of its most-rewatched original films that year. Though Netflix rarely provides statistics in context, the company’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos said “The Kissing Booth” was “one of the most-watched movies in the country, and maybe in the world.”
The original film follows King’s character, a high schooler who runs into trouble when she starts to fall for her best friend’s older brother.

While eliciting skepticism from critics, Netflix's The Kissing Booth has effectively charmed teen audiences everywhere with the easy chemistry between its leads and its danceable, breezy soundtrack. Fan or foe, there's really no denying its overwhelming popularity. The novel from which the movie was adapted also reached cult-level status shortly after its debut. In fact, Beth Reekles, the young Welsh author behind the book, is something of an internet sensation.
At age 15, the South Wales native wrote The Kissing Booth and uploaded the story onto a writing platform called Wattpad. The novel was a hit and accumulated 19 million reads. A few years later, Random House UK picked it up and offered her a book deal. Since then, she has published other young adult reads like Rolling Dice, Out of Tune, and Cwtch Me If You Can.

The Kissing Booth has become one of the internet's latest teen obsessions. Like many a sun-drenched soap such as The O.C. or 90210, the movie is set in an upscale Southern California neighborhood. Featuring ritzy mansions, golden beaches, and even the notorious Hollywood sign, The Kissing Booth gives the impression that its shooting took place entirely in Los Angeles. Director Vince Marcello, however, shot most of Netflix's teen comedy film in Cape Town, South Africa.

Equally atmospheric in strikingly different ways, the living dead and prom make for an awesome, creepy combination (see Gregg Bishop's Dance of the Dead), and they could come together once again via the in-the-works Zombie Prom feature film.
Variety reports that a feature film adaptation of the Zombie Prom musical is in development. The movie and TV rights to the horror comedy play that made its debut in 1993 have been picked up by Michael J. Roth and Steve Longi.
Vince Marcello, who wrote and directed the 2006 short film adaptation of Zombie Prom, will direct the full-length feature from a screenplay he'll write with creative collaborator Mark Landry (the duo co-penned Disney's Teen Beach Movie).
