Finish Him: New Music Video from Wolfie’s Just Fine Induces Warm ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Nostalgia [Watch]
Whether he’s singing a beautiful song from the perspective of a Graboid in the Tremors franchise or waxing poetic about Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, musician Jon Lajoie (aka Wolfie’s Just Fine) has proven himself to be a master of pop culture nostalgia, carving out a unique niche for himself with his surprisingly tender and thoughtful reflections on the past.
Lajoie is back for the Halloween season with a brand new Wolfie’s Just Fine single, and this time around he’s penned a loving ode to Mortal Kombat 2. As always, Lajoie approaches the topic from a highly personal point of view. As he explains in the video’s brief description, “This is a song about the very first time I felt good at something. I was 13. True story.”

Choosing the best TV episodes is very different from choosing the best TV.
The best episodes might be outstanding hours of shows that fluctuate in quality, or a pivotal character moment or story beat that contextualizes everything else. Sometimes the best episode is part of an almost embarrassing bounty — just one of many consistently brilliant installments in a TV show that blew away both audiences and critics.
IndieWire’s look at the best TV episodes of 2022 is all those things, populated by our usual suspects of top 2022 TV as well as hours we couldn’t forget and shows we gladly binged in a weekend. There is drama, there is comedy, there is literal “Euphoria.” This list has it all. What it doesn’t have, however, is more than one episode from the same show, in an effort to spread the wealth.

When the cast and creators of FX Networks’ “The League” reunited Friday night in Austin at the Atx Television Festival the primary topic — threaded between jokes about fantasy football failures and on-set injuries — was timing and opportunity. Namely, did the show air at the right time, could it survive in today’s TV landscape, and would it thrive, even, if a revival aired on streaming or premium networks, sans the restrictions of basic cable?
Katie Aselton, who played Jenny, referred to the possibility of a revival as the “billion dollar question,” and co-creator Jackie Marcus Schaffer caught some good-natured flack from the cast when she questioned “The League’s” continued relevancy.
“At the time [we made the show], fantasy football was [really] popular,” she said. “But is that still a thing?”
“I don’t know,” Aselton said, sarcastically. “Are friends still a thing?”
“Are people still busting balls?” Jason Mantzoukas said, piling on.

On Friday night, The League creators Jeff Schaffer and Jackie Marcus Schaffer were joined by cast members Paul Scheer (Andre), Nick Kroll (Ruxin), Jason Mantzoukas (Rafi), Stephen Rannazzisi (Kevin) and Katie Aselton (Jenny) to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the FX cult comedy and reminisce about the show and hilariously throw each other under the bus — specifically Jonathan Lajoie and Mark Duplass, who weren’t able to make it to the reunion. But first, they pointed out that they once had a member of the royal family on the show.
“Mark is Eskimo brothers with Prince Harry,” Aselton pointed out.
Rannazzisi was shocked and did not remember that Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex, was on the show on the first season of the show playing a divorcee.
“We had an Oscar winner and a princess on the show!” Aselton pointed out.
“The Queen is a big The League fan,” Mantzoukas chimed in before taking a beat to say: “If Meghan Markle was in a scene with Rafi, she would be ineligible to be a princess.”
The series ran for seven seasons and for those who watched the semi-improvised show, the Schaffers puts the cast through a lot of off-center scenarios which included work with dangerous members of the animal kingdom including bears, bulls, monkeys and birds — which Rannazzisi hates. They also discussed how they had a real fantasy football league behind the scenes and out of everyone, Rannazzisi and Schaffer were the only real-life fantasy football players — and they constantly lost. There were also many moments when injuries happened on set with an on-set medic who wasn’t that much help. All that said, they were asked if there would a reboot of this show to do all of this all over again.
“At the time, fantasy football was popular — is that still popular?” asked Marcus Schaffer.
Aselton responded, “Is Friends still popular, Jackie?”
“There’s nothing on this planet more fun than working with these people,” Schaffer added. “It was an extremely fun experience.”
“Could you reboot the show and have the same impact — I don’t know,” adds Scheer. “But I think people would be excited to see this show do something.”...

A great ensemble creates a mysterious bond between a show and its viewers. The chemistry shared on screen brings with it a certain level of comfort.
But to refer to this quality as some kind of supernatural power does a disservice to the men and women who forge it. There is the talent of each individual performer to consider: If any of them falter, the whole dynamic falls apart. It’s a dynamic that requires work, too. Whether it’s bonding in real-life or being a good listener on set, chemistry is a science for these casts; it’s made, not found.
Then there’s the versatility of expanding these connections beyond just one or two cast members, but an entire ensemble of six or so series regulars. The best ensembles work no matter who’s paired up in a scene, and it feels like the TV can barely contain...

One of the highest compliments you can pay to a TV show is this: It knows exactly what kind of show it is. And that’s very much the case for “What Would Diplo Do?” the new Viceland scripted comedy showrun by and starring James Van Der Beek.
What is a Diplo? You don’t necessarily need to know the answer to enjoy the series, directed by Brandon Dermer and starring Van Der Beek as a world-famous DJ who travels the world with an eclectic crew of characters performing sick concerts and getting into hijinks. But the answer is that Diplo (born Thomas Wesley Pentz) is a real Edm artist who (theoretically) is nothing at all like Van Der Beek’s portrayal. And that fact is part of what makes the series work so well, as Van Der Beek pushes his character portrait beyond simple caricature into the most out-there realms.

“I don’t really like scary movies, except when I want to be scared.” That logical conundrum was shared with me across the table as I had lunch with my sons the other day. I wrote about Toshi’s experience with the film Halloween and how it seemed like an important developmental step for him as a person, not just as a film fan, and I took some heat for it from some of the readers. I get it. Horror films aren’t for everyone, and for some people, they are never enjoyable. They simply don’t like the experience. But for those of us who love horror films, there’s usually a moment that we remember as a flashpoint for that love, and it normally involves being so scared that we go into a sort of shock sitting there in the dark. I miss that feeling, honestly, and there are times where,...

Comedian/musician Jon Lajoie, who you may recognize as "Taco" from the FX series The League, has released a cool music video for a song called "A New Beginning" (he sings and plays guitar in the band, which is called Wolfie's Just Fine). The song is about a kid growing up and seeing Jason Voorhees murder two characters in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning; I've never seen that movie, so while I'm sure it works wonderfully if you have and know the specific scene he's referencing, everyone can relate to it as a nostalgic throwback to the feelings we felt as kids the first time we ever saw a horror movie.

Jon Lajoie is perhaps best recognized as playing Taco on The League, so if you've seen the show, you probably can't help but associate him with his supremely dimwitted character who has no care for social boundaries. He's also a musician, though, and apparently a pretty clever one at that. Now that The League has ended, Lajoie has released an album under his stage name, Wolfie's Just Fine. Surprisingly, it includes one of the best tributes to horror movies I've ever heard or seen. Titled "A New Beginning," the song is all about a grown man remembering what it was like to watch a sex and death filled slasher as a boy. The lyrics are nostalgia-inducing enough on their own, but it's the music video that really transcends this thing...

As a result of its moving from FX to sister network Fxx, You’re the Worst, one of the best new shows of last year, wound up being separated from fellow freshman comedy Married and delayed from summer until fall. But never fear, loyal viewers – the series has been newly dated for Wednesday, September 9, premiering at 10:30 p.m. Et after the final season premiere of The League. Wednesday Funday, anyone?
You’re the Worst, written and exec-produced by creator Stephen Falk, is billed as an anti-romantic comedy, about two self-destructive individuals (Aya Cash and Chris Geere) who find themselves in a quasi-relationship despite both of their intentions to the contrary. The sophomore run will explore how their dynamic shifts when the pair are forced to move in together after a vibrator-sparked house fire (just do yourself a favor and watch this show).

There are few things as quietly distressing and disappointing to the film fan as seeing people you like and admire feature in movies that are total turd. Such is the case with Let’s Be Cops. I really like Jake Johnson. If you read my Frightfest review of Creep you’ll probably have noticed that I spent about a third of that gushing about Safety Not Guaranteed, the Johnson-starring offbeat dramedy in which he is really good as a louche journalist. He is also really good in New Girl. So good, in fact, that he pretty much carried the show for the first half season it takes to get used to how annoying Zooey Deschanel is in it.

The League is disbanding. Fxx has renewed the fantasy football comedy series for a seventh and final season. The League originally debuted on FX back in 2009 and moved to Fxx for its fifth season in 2013. And of course, in the style of The League, presidents of original original programming for FX Networks, Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, along with Jeff Schaffer and Jackie Marcu Schaffer, the husband and wife, executive producer duo behind The League, revealed the news about that final season in a very goofy, funny way. “Our gang can burn a beach house like Calvin Johnson on a secondary but I shudder to think what they’ll do in the final battle for the Shiva,...

New York – Fxx's "The League" is currently in the middle of its sixth season, and like a running back in his prime, it shows no signs of slowing down. The show isn't just irreverent, it is regularly outright rude, and it is almost always funny. The panel they offered today at New York Comic-Con then was just like the show itself. People who dared to ask questions were made fun of (in the nicest way possible), and the audience was primed for it all by first getting to see an upcoming episode. After the screening, the Q&A began and present on the dais were stars Nick Kroll, Mark Duplass, Jon Lajoie, Paul Scheer, Katie Aselton, Stephen Rannazzisi, Jason Mantzoukas, and co-creators Jeff and Jackie Schaffer. Some background: Killer Mike and El-p, who make music together as the hip-hop duo Run the Jewels, joked in September about releasing a special edition of their next album that replaces all their beats with cat sounds. Then a Kickstarter user created a campaign to turn the joke into a reality. Soon, musicians like Zola Jesus, Boots, Just Blaze, and more clambered to contribute to Meow the Jewels. As goofy as the project is,...

Jackie and Jeff Schaffer were supposed to be having a romantic Christmas Eve dinner at a restaurant in France when Jeff got up to go to the bathroom. Except he didn't really go to the bathroom: He went outside in the snow without a jacket to call back home to the States and check on his Fantasy Football teams. His wife eventually found him outside and thought, "This is a television show." And now it actually is a TV show: The Schaffers created The League, a half-hour comedy that follows a league of amoral, goofy friends who will do anything to win the trophy.

If you need a quick example of The League’s sense of humor, see: main character Kevin pees his pants within the first few minutes of the season 6 premiere. And that’s one of the less humiliating thing to happen throughout the episode.
For the uninformed, The League follows a group of five men and one woman who get together each year to compete in a Fantasy Football league that results in pranks, deception, and overall chaos. Like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the characters don’t seem to have any sort of moral compass and are immune to sympathy.

In a summer that seems to be lacking in truly great, original comedies, Let’s Be Cops certainly has the potential to break the mould and offer something a little different. With a host of great weapons in its arsenal, including two rising stars in Damon Wayans, Jr. and Jake Johnson, we also see them joined by the talented leading lady Nina Dobrev, and a revered Andy Garcia as the film’s chief antagonist. The premise itself is the stuff of comedy gold – two ne’er-do-wells from Los Angeles dress up like cops and use the power that comes along with the position to do everything from smoking marijuana in public, getting into trendy night clubs, and turn the tables on those who’ve wronged them in the past. But halfway through this film, it simply becomes all too familiar.

"Belle"
What's It About? This 18th century English romance is about Dido Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a biracial woman raised by her aristocratic great uncle and aunt, Lord and Lady Mansfield. She grows up alongside her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) as equals and best friends, but as they come of age, their differences become all too apparent -- to each other and to their would-be suitors. Meanwhile, Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) is facing a trial as Lord Chief Justice of England that could change the future of slavery. Will Dido find love on her own terms?
Why We're In: It's an elegant period piece perfect for Jane Austen fans, and it's a subtle but effective examination of the intersection of class and race in 18th century England. Mbatha-Raw is fantastic, and director Amma Asante has an excellent eye for detail.

Over the past few television seasons, both New Girl‘s Jake Johnson and Happy Endings‘ Damon Wayans Jr. have found their star rise with a growing number of fans, as well as critical acclaim. With Wayans Jr. playing a brief role in the pilot episode of New Girl, many were excited to see the two re-team again, an idea that came to fruition when both performers signed on for Let’s be Cops prior to Wayans Jr. reprising his role on the Fox sitcom. Luke Greenfield takes on directing duties, along with co-writing the screenplay with Nicholas Thomas, and Johnson and Wayans Jr. are joined onscreen by Keegan Michael-Key, Rob Riggle, Jon Lajoie, and Nina Dobrev. The first trailer, which is a red-band, for the film has now been released, and can be seen below.

Remember last year when through its Amazon overlords Lovefilm put several pilots online including the pretty good failed Zombieland pilot? Well, they are at it again with ten new pilots, none of which have committed to series yet but with which the lucky few will go to one of those full season exclusive type deals that Netflix do so well.
I don’t know about you but I kind of wish they would just commit to something right out the gate and take the risks, its paid off for Netflix so far and Amazon are attracting some major talent to their stable too.
The pilots include; Bosch a detective show based on a Michael Connelly book series and starring the great Titus Welliver, Kids shows Wishenproof, Hardboiled Eggheads, The JoB and Graff Show and Gortimer Gibbons Life on Normal Street. We also have comedy from The Rebels; a kind of...

On FX, The League brought in healthy ratings. Now that the sitcom has moved to Fxx, will the viewers follow? We'll have to wait and see. Thankfully for fans, the show's already been renewed for a sixth season.
The League continues to revolve around a group of friends from Illinois who take part in a fantasy football league. The show stars Mark Duplass, Nick Kroll, Stephen Rannazzisi, Paul Scheer, Jon Lajoie, and Katie Aselton.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually on Thursdays.
Final season averages: 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 500,000 total viewers.

IFC Films has unveiled the full theatrical trailer for Wrong Cops, the third feature from "Mr. Oizo" aka French director Quentin Dupieux, responsible for Rubber and Wrong before this. Wrong Cops chronicles a group of cops behaving badly in a not too-distant future where crime has been all but eradicated. We've featured one early promo trailer for this before, and the film has been touring around to festivals, but this is the first real trailer we've had yet and it's extremely wacky and vulgar, but oddly kind of fun. The ensemble cast includes Marilyn Manson, Steve Little, Eric Wareheim, Jon Lajoie and many more. Enjoy this! Here's the full official trailer for Quentin Dupieux's Wrong Cops, debuted on EW.com via IFC Films: Update! Added the official Wrong Cops poster below (which is just wrong) to go along with the trailer. Imagine a Los Angeles where crime is...

No matter what, you can always count on one thing from Rubber and Wrong director Quentin Dupieux. His films will be weird. They often won't make sense. But everyone agrees that they are very, very weird. And here he comes again, with his Wrong Cops gearing up for its official release and a new trailer debuting over at Entertainment Weekly. This one began life as a short film that premiered in Cannes before expanding out to feature length and taking a bow at Sundance and now it is hear to admire in all its glory. (Cbr) Sitting down with the creators and cast of Fxx Network’s The League, it’s easy to see how each actor has a different style and approach and how that echoes what viewers see on screen. Writer Jeff Schaffer described the cast of The League as “the Justice League of comedy all-stars,” and if you attended the NY Comic Con panel for Fxx’s smash hit comedy, you’ll know exactly why. It’s not like I needed any more convincing either, as I’ve been watching this hilarious look into Fantasy Football since the very first episode, and haven’t stopped laughing since.

Only missing Nick Kroll, these tremendously funny people showed why The League can rely so heavily on improvisation and still be one of the funniest shows on TV.

Miley Cyrus' performance of "Blurred Lines" at the MTV VMAs with Robin Thicke was racist. Wait, it wasn't racist. It was creepy, it misdirected the media, it was proof that "America is dead inside."
Or maybe it was proof that we're all a bunch of hypocrites.
That's the message in a new song by Canadian Comedian and "The League" actor Jon Lajoie.
The message is summed up in these lyrics:
The lines no longer blur, you crossed it, and upset the nation
Don’t get us wrong, we’re super cool with objectification
But it’s hard to watch you play that part, we’ve known you for too long
So please go back to singing the Hannah Montana theme song
And we’ll go back to watching others do exactly what you did
And we won’t be offended because we cannot pictures them as kids
Sounds about right.

Brendan Fraser wants a movie, and -- like fellow celebs Kristen Bell, Zach Braff, and James Franco -- he wants your money to make it. But unlike Bell, Braff, and Franco, he's a little hazy on the details.

As you may have heard, in tones of varying screechiness, Kickstarter has endured a sort of backlash of late, as the crowdsourcing site has been increasingly co-opted by musicians and filmmakers with plenty of means to realize their projects, yet ask you to give it to them anyway. Some have responded by pointedly making their own art for free. Others have taken out their frustrations on Melissa Joan Hart. More recently, comedian Jon Lajoie (best known as “Taco” on The League) witheringly spoofed such endeavors with his “Help Jon Become Super Rich!!!”, a mocking initiative dedicated to helping Jon become ...

He’s already gained a massive following thanks to some brilliant YouTube videos and now Jon Lajoie is lampooning the growing trend of celebrities hitting up fans for dollars via Kickstarter.
The “League” hunk adds in plenty of sarcasm and dry wit as he explains the concept of taking himself from simply rich to super rich.
And Jon even offers up some less-than-amazing bonus incentives for those who are willing to give him upwards of $10,000.
Of course, there’s no actual Kickstarter campaign, however Lajoie manages to slam the fundraising efforts of the “Veronica Mars Movie” and Zach Braff’s forthcoming project.

After serving as a lightning rod for controversy during its month of activity, Zach Braff's Kickstarter campaign has topped out at $3.1 million, reaching its funding goal and then some. Though the Wise I Was Here fundraising drive may have ended, criticism of it has not ceased. Most recently, comedian Jon Lajoie has released a satirical pitch video mocking Braff. Lajoie's video purports to launch a Kickstarter campaigned aimed at nothing more than making the League star (best known on the Internet for the ridiculous 'Show Me Your Genitals' video) as wealthy as he can possibly be. "By you simply handing over your hard-earned money to me," says Lajoie in the video, "I can become super rich without all the added pressure of doing something." Jon Lajoie, one of the stars of "The League," has decided to follow the examples of "Veronica Mars" and Zach Braff by starting a Kickstarter campaign. Except this Kickstarter is a little different -- Lajoie wants his fans to donate $500 million in order to make him super-rich.
At least he's honest about it?
Obviously this particular Kickstarter is a joke and a parody mocking other famous and wealthy people who want their fans to pay for things instead of paying for themselves. It is, however, probably a good thing that a comedian like Lajoie did this before a huge celebrity actually managed to get money for essentially nothing.
But let's assume this Kickstarter was real for a second. What could you get for pledging your hard-earned cash so that Jon Lajoie can go jet-skiing whenever he wants?

Finally, a celebrity Kickstarter campaign that calls it like it is. Sort of. Also read: Melissa Joan Hart Discovers the Dark Side of Kickstarter According to the digital goof, the campaign has already surpassed its $500 million goal, with a total of $10,338,824,677.93 pledged so far. Jon Lajoie, one of the leads of the FX series The League, becomes the latest celebrity to try and exploit his fan base by using Kickstarter to empower a passion project. Only here, the passion project is Lajoie’s personal bank account. Now, even though this is played for laughs, and despite all the coverage we’ve done for the Kickstarter-empowered Zach Braff and the Veronica Mars movie projects, Jon encapsulates pretty much how I still feel about millionaires tapping the unwashed masses to kick in funding that will underwrite projects these people couldn’t coin in the traditional way. These are projects that will possibly make the rich even richer, while donors get tchotchkes of negligible value, with no chance to share in the financial upside. Have I become Grumpy Cat (whose movie will be financed the traditional way) or does my cynicism here have value?...
