Unreported World

7.35pm, Channel 4

Widows in Nepal have traditionally been despised and turned into pariahs. Yemi Ipaye meets 14-year-old Geeta, who has been ostracised by her village since being widowed – her parents forced her into marriage when she was 11. This is standard in Nepal: child widows are regarded as bad luck and blamed for the death of their husbands, rarely remarry, and often end up abused and in prostitution. Ipaye follows the story of these women with thorough and dispassionate inquiry, speaking to everyone from Hindu priests to social workers to work out how this culture developed.

Eiff 09: Review of Shane Meadows' Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee

24 June 2009 10:49 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Year: 2009

Directors: Shane Meadows

Writers: Shane Meadows & Paddy Considine

Trailer: link

Review by: projectcyclops

Rating: 7 out of 10

At last, Shane Meadows has made a straight-up comedy! Not just a comedy, but a Christopher Guest style, ‘Spinal Tap’ inspired faux-rockumentary. Paddy Considine (star of BAFTA winning Christopher Morris short, My Wrongs 8245-8249 and 117) plays Le Donk, an irrepressible rock roadie with a pregnant ex-girlfriend (Peep Show’s Olivia Coleman) and a rapper sidekick, whom he’s going to help hit the big-time. Shane himself shows up at Le Donk’s flat with his documentary crew and they follow him on his adventures, touring with The Arctic Monkeys and attempting to gain some recognition for his buddy, real life rapper Scorz-Ayz-Ee, playing himself.

The best thing about Le Donk is that Paddy, Olivia and Shane seem to be the only people fully in on the joke, almost everyone else in »

Video: "Beautiful People" (1.02): "How I Got My Nose"

3 June 2009 7:38 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Olivia Colman, Layton Williams and Luke Ward-WilkinsonLike last week, we're once again excited to be able to share with you folks the latest episode of Beautiful People, the British comedy currently airing Stateside on Logo (our parent company).

This episode involves young Simon auditioning for a plum role in the school play, and is seriously 25 of the most brilliantly camptastic minutes of television I've seen since Solid Gold went off the air. Do yourself a favor and give it a go.

Enjoy, and let us know what you think!

For more Beautiful People goodies, check out the show's page on LOGOonline.com. »

"Beautiful People" Makes For Beautiful Television

25 May 2009 5:47 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

All photos credit: Logo/BBC

For me, summer is not a season for television. It's a season for kicking back in the yard or the park with fizzy cocktails, eating meals composed entirely of various types of ice cream, and laughing so hard with your friends that your mother/landlord/neighbors yell at you or you lose control of a bodily function.

Enter Logo's (AfterElton.com's parent company) Beautiful People, the first series of the summer to allow you to do all of these things in the comfort of your air-conditioned living room.

Equal parts wistful remembrance and raucous, candy-colored fantasy, Beautiful People is sort of what The Wonder Years would look like were it directed by a relatively well-behaved John Waters. Loosely based on the memoirs of Simon Doonan (first released in the U.K. under the title Nasty), the series tells the story of an impossibly fabulous and »

Camptastic Britcom "Beautiful People" coming to the States this May

24 February 2009 7:51 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Here's some great news for us folks Stateside: Logo (our parent company) has secured the rights to broadcast the first two seasons of the British comedy Beautiful People here in the States. The show is based on the memoirs of style icon Simon Doonan (also the husband of American superdesigner Jonathan Adler).

Set in the early '90s, the show tells the story of Simon's coming-of-age as a gay teenager in working-class Britain, and made a big splash with mainstream audiences when it premiered in the fall overseas. We've been dying to get a look at the show (being big fans of both Doonan and of the people behind the sitcom, who also brought us a little show called Absolutely Fabulous) and we're stoked that we'll all get the chance in the near-term.
