England in 1536, a time when King Henry VIII started beefing with the Catholic Church because divorce was a hard ask even for a King back then. Jokes aside, the age of Reformation brought a whole lot of changes to the country, and big and powerful monasteries got the worst end of the bargain. Based on C. J. Sansom’s series of epic historical fiction novels, Arthur Hughes is Matthew Shardlake, a king’s emissary who must ensure the dissolution of Saint Donatus.

Even though the show Shardlake is purely a work of fiction, a few of the real-life historical events it’s based on make it more intriguing. The Reformation in England under King Henry VIII remains an important part of the history of England, and one of the key players in executing the reformation was Lord Cromwell. Serving as the principal advisor to King Henry, Cromwell shut monasteries down all over the country. In this article, we’re going to look into the depths of this ruthless and inhumane historical figure, portrayed by the wonderful Sean Bean.

“I don’t think I’m projecting at all!” screenwriter Stephen Butchard tells Den of Geek about the crossover between modern and 16th century politics in new four-part historical crime drama Shardlake. “It’s the same. I don’t consider [Shardlake] to be period or Tudor, it’s about people and we haven’t changed and probably will never change. Power corrupts.”
Shardlake is set during Henry VIII’s Reformation of the English church – a classic case of corruption, says Butchard, in which money promised to the poor ended up in the pockets of the rich. When the king’s man is killed at a monastery, Thomas Cromwell sends lawyer Matthew Shardlake to investigate. Find the killer, says Cromwell, and find proof of the monks’ crookedness so we can shut them down… or else, is the unspoken additional threat.

Out of battery. Out of signal. Stamped underfoot. Dropped into drains. Crime writers have found inventive ways to remove suspense-killing mobile phones from their stories, but no solution is as thorough as Cj Sansom’s. By setting his murder mysteries in Tudor times, Sansom’s 16th century lawyer Matthew Shardlake has to investigate without mobiles, forensics or DNA databases, armed with only his mind and principles. Or rather: his mind, principles, and the fearful reputation of his boss Thomas Cromwell whose name Shardlake draws “like a sword”.
This four-part historical crime drama is adapted from the first of Sansom’s seven Shardlake novels by Stephen Butchard, the writer who so successfully translated Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories to the screen in The Last Kingdom. If it lands well with an audience, there’s hope of many more series, each one a self-contained mystery for ‘the Tudor Morse’ to solve against...

In Hulu’s Shardlake, as in Arthurian legend, a hand emerges from a body of water bearing a sword. Though lacking Excalibur’s magical touch, this blade’s discovery does serve the ambitions of a monarch. After splitting England from the Catholic Church in 1534, King Henry VIII and his chief minister, Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean), have begun dissolving monasteries across the realm and seizing their wealth. The decapitation of Cromwell’s representative (Michael Rivers) at an abbey near the remote, boggy town of Scarnsea presents an opportunity to advance that crusade, with Cromwell sending an odd couple of agents to investigate the incident, commanding them to find sufficient reason to shutter the order.
In the third episode, the monks watch in horror as endearingly determined lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) and Jack Barak (Anthony Boyle), the cocksure enforcer assigned to accompany him, find the submerged murder weapon on their grounds.

In Jonathan Frakes' 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact," the U.S.S. Enterprise travels back in time to the year 2063, the year humanity first invented faster-than-light travel and, almost immediately thereafter, made first contact with an alien species. By "Star Trek" lore, the maiden voyage of the Phoenix, the very first warp-capable ship, caught the attention of a passing Vulcan vessel, causing them to change course, land on Earth, and shake hands with humans. It was the franchise's "Welcome to the neighborhood" moment. It also started a massive utopian rebuilding of Earth, as it had just survived several devastating wars. By "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's estimation, Earth had to almost destroy itself to have a "moment of clarity." After that, the technological, post-war, post-scarcity, post-capitalist utopia could begin.
The inventor of warp drive was Zefram Cochrane, who fashioned his ship out of a disused bomb casing. In "First Contact,...

“Shardlake” is a new live-action ‘Tudor England’ era, 4-part drama series, directed by Justin Chadwick, following the adventures of the hunchbacked lawyer/detective ‘Matthew Shardlake’ (Arthur Hughes) co-starring Sean Bean as ‘Thomas Cromwell’, streaming May 1, 1023 on Hulu:
“…drenched in mystery, suspense, and deception, this four-part drama is an eerie whodunnit adventure set in 16th century England during the dissolution of the monasteries.
“The sheltered life of ‘Shardlake’ (Hughes) as a lawyer is turned upside down when Cromwell (Bean) instructs him to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea.
“The commissioner was gathering evidence to close the monastery, and it is now imperative for Cromwell’s own political survival that Shardlake solve the murder and closes the monastery.

It’s the battle of the TV Cromwells! On BBC One later this year, Mark Rylance returns in the role of Henry VIII’s right hand man in series two of Wolf Hall, adapted from Dame Hilary Mantel’s acclaimed novels. But before then, Sean Bean will play Thomas Cromwell in Disney+ British historical crime mystery Shardlake.
(Incidentally, if Bean wanted to dispel his reputation for playing characters who meet sticky, early ends, then his agent may want to get their head in a history book before forwarding the next script…)
Thomas Cromwell is a supporting role in Shardlake, a new four-part series adapted from the first in C.J Sansom’s successful mystery novels about Matthew Shardlake, a 16th century lawyer born with what would now be understood as scoliosis, and who investigates murder mysteries for the Crown.

“Succession” co-stars James Cromwell and Nicholas Braun will reunite on Saturday, Jan. 6, at the grand opening of PETA’s Los Angeles event space, the James Cromwell Empathy Center.
Cromwell is known as an outspoken animal rights activist. He will do the honor of cutting the ribbon at the ceremony, which takes place the same day he is nominated for a Creative Arts Award Emmy.
Cromwell and Braun starred as Uncle Ewan and Cousin Greg, respectively, on HBO’s “Succession,” which ended with a bang in 2023 with its fourth and final season. Their characters have a contentious relationship onscreen, as Cousin Greg longs to fit in with the Roy family and Uncle Ewan looks down upon him, threatening to pull his inheritance.

When the nominations for the 1959 Primetime Emmys were revealed, 13-year-old supporting candidate Johnny Crawford (“The Rifleman”) became the youngest male acting contender in TV academy history and then retained the title for the next six and a half decades. After so many years of his record appearing to be unbreakable, it was finally shattered this summer by Best Drama Guest Actor nominee Keivonn Montreal Woodard, who turned 10 this February. His historic bid for HBO’s “The Last of Us” makes him not only a credit to child actors but also to deaf performers, as no male one had ever earned Emmy recognition before.

Nick Offerman has been a bit of an Emmys bridesmaid so far, as the versatile actor has been nominated three times in his career but failed to turn any of them into cold, hard wins he can put on his shelf. This year, he earned his fourth nomination — and, surprisingly, his first one as an actor. He was nominated for Best Drama Guest Actor for HBO’s hugely successful video-game adaptation “The Last of Us.”
In the show, Offerman appears as Bill in episode three — “Long, Long Time.” Perhaps the most emotional episode of the entire series, Offerman is front and center of the drama and truly gets a chance to show off his acting chops. After earning the first Emmy nomination of his career last year for his hilariously shrewd character Stewy on “Succession,” Arian Moayed has nabbed his second bid for Drama Guest Actor for the final season of the acclaimed HBO series. The actor has been a staple member of the ensemble for all four seasons, an old friend of Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) who has been both an ally and rival as he’s gone from trying to take over the company with other backers to one of its most influential board members.
Moayed is once again nominated alongside his fellow “Succession” guest star James Cromwell. Aside from the two of them, the category is made up of performers from “The Last of Us”: Murray Bartlett, Lamar Johnson, Nick Offerman, and Keivonn Montreal Woodard.

Just one year after HBO’s “Succession” broke new ground as the first drama series to ever receive four male guest acting Emmy nominations at once, the same network’s “The Last of Us” has matched the impressive feat. Cromwell’s nominated episode is “Church and State,” the penultimate episode of the show’s final season. After helping to wheel in the coffin of his brother, Logan (Brian Cox), Ewan gets up to give a eulogy even though the rest of the family doesn’t want him anywhere near a microphone. Greg (Nicholas Braun) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) try to stop him but Ewan defiantly steps up to the pulpit.

Murray Bartlett is having a very special moment. After winning his first Emmy last year, the actor has followed up that victory with not one but two nominations this year as he looks to continue his hot streak. One of those bids this year is for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for “Welcome to Chippendales,” while his second comes for HBO’s drama “The Last of Us,” which amassed a whopping 25 Emmy bids. Specifically, Bartlett was nominated for Best Drama Guest Actor for his emotional role as Frank in episode three of the show.
That episode, titled “Long, Long Time,” was touted as one of the very best in the entire series and was certainly the most heartbreaking. The episode flashes back to Frank leaving Baltimore as the epidemic spread. Soon after, he stumbles across a protected compound belonging to Nick Offerman‘s Bill, who, at first, is reluctant...

Here’s a new streaming flick that’s perfect for the season and answers a question that’s probably on the minds of many youngsters: do my favorite superheroes get to celebrate the holiday? I mean do the ‘super-baddies” give them a day off? Those queries have been explored in many animated TV shows and in the comic book source materials (the rival comics companies would usually publish a “Christmas with the Superheroes” annual special edition). So a feature-length “jolly romp” is well overdue. So, will Christmas Eve lighten up the Dark Knight? Especially if there’s a junior caped crusader in the mix (and we’re not talking about the “boy wonder”). Hey, who’s that swinging over the roofs of Gotham City? It’s none other than a Merry Little Batman.

The 2023 Best Drama Guest Actor Emmy lineup consists of a balanced mix of outside winners, past nominees, and total first-timers whose wide age range runs from 10 to 83. Nick Offerman (“The Last of Us”) has been leading the pack all season, but all six final contenders have more than reasonable claims to victory. This includes Murray Bartlett, whose own mention for the same “Last of Us” installment comes on the heels of his 2022 supporting triumph for “The White Lotus” and is coupled with another featured limited series bid for “Welcome to Chippendales.”
“The Last of Us” immediately follows “Succession” as the second show to ever concurrently receive four nominations in this category. Its other two went to Emmy newcomers Lamar Johnson and Keivonn Montreal Woodard, with the remaining slots being filled by returning “Succession” hopefuls James Cromwell and Arian Moayed.

Secret Invasion is not the first time the MCU has dipped its toe into the spy genre; Captain America: The Winter Soldier has been a fan favorite among MCU films since it was released in 2014. But Secret Invasion, a show following not superheroes (Rhodey aside), but human spies and aliens posing as humans, embraces the spy genre more than anything we’ve seen yet. With Russia back in the bad guy role, the show draws on the best spy dramas of the Cold War, and with London featuring quite heavily in its story and the British Prime Minister having a major role, a lot of those dramas are British spy classics.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we wonder how many acting nominations “Succession” can score on a restricted ballot.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s the Friday before we make our final Emmy nominations predictions next week, so what better time than now to take one last look at the drama race before our actual last look? I’m not sure if people reading our weekly column realize this, but we both loved “Succession.” It’s true! I would say it’s not just my favorite show of the year but perhaps of forever. So I start here with that bit of throat-clearing to give some perspective on what I’m going to type here: I think people might be underestimating the total number of acting...

In modern world history, few single years have been as tumultuous as 1968. The Vietnam War continued to drag on and had reached an unprecedented level of unpopularity. The assasinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy shocked the world. Protests against the war, for civil rights, and at the Democratic National Convention raged in the streets. On movie screens, another revolution was taking place that reflected the values of the passionate youth movement and rejected the “old ways” of filmmaking. In the years 1967-68, the studio system was taking its last gasping breaths and films like Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, Cool Hand Luke, The Producers, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Bullit, and If…. were changing the game in Hollywood and Britain by taking after New Wave movements in France and Italy. The horror landscape was changing as well. Gothic horrors were giving way to modern films both in setting and subject.

For a long time, this year’s drama guest actor race looked to be a celebration of the heartwarming lovers from “The Last of Us”. Actors Nick Offerman (1st in our odds) and Murray Bartlett (2nd in our odds) were anointed Emmy frontrunners all the way back in January after the devastatingly beautiful episode “Long, Long Time”, premiered to rapturous industry reception.
This race was all but over in the view of our experts. The only thing in question was which one? The against-type Offerman or the ailing Bartlett? That was until “Church and State”, the penultimate episode of HBO’s “Succession,” announced Emmy darling James Cromwell’s bid for the statuette.
Cromwell’s character, Ewan Roy, the elder disapproving brother of the show’s central media titan, Logan Roy, made a haunting appearance in the episode. One that is highly unlikely to be forgotten by the television academy. Unlike Offerman and Bartlett in “Long,...

Run Forest run… towards another Emmy. That was a terrible joke but Forest Whitaker again delivered another definitely-not-terrible performance in his guest actor role in “Andor.”
“Andor,” one of the best-reviewed shows of this year, is the Disney+ spin-off TV series of the spin-off “Star Wars” movie “Rogue One.” The series follows Diego Luna in the titular role of Cassian Andor as we find out how this scoundrel eventually joins the Rebel Alliance and becomes a crucial part of the fight against the Empire. Along the way, Cassian meets some key figures in “Star Wars” lore including Stellan Skarsgård‘s Luthen Rael and Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera.
This is just the latest appearance as Saw by Whitaker (more on that later) and the performer shines once again in a role he seems born for. Saw is part of one branch of those fighting against the Empire. He fights against the...

Does the Best Drama Guest Actor Emmy race have a new frontrunner? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss James Cromwell‘s late fastball into the mix in the penultimate episode of “Succession,” what will take that eighth Best Drama Series spot and more.
Though he had yet to make an appearance on “Succession” this season prior to Sunday, Cromwell has been predicted to earn a drama guest actor nomination. Makes sense since he’s gotten in the past two times and “Succession” is the series favorite. But the actor’s performance in “Church and State,” in which Ewan (Cromwell) delivers a brutal and brutally honest eulogy at Logan’s (Brian Cox) funeral, not only cemented his nomination but made him extremely win-competitive as well. Can he take down the “Last of Us” duo of Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett, who are 1-2 in the odds?...

James Cromwell, nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1995 for his role in Babe, expressed solidarity today for the WGA members who are out on strike.
“It begins with the words. Nothing happens without them,” wrote the actor on Twitter. He then linked the assertion to his own recent work in Succession, where his character Ewan rips recently-deceased brother Logan Roy in his eulogy. “I got to a give a brilliant speech recently, which not only explicated my and my brother’s characters, it illuminated an entire narrative.”
Then Cromwell, who is no stranger to social activism, got specific in his support.
“This is what great writers do. And they need to be compensated in accordance with their contribution. At the very least, they need to be able to provide for themselves and their families,” he wrote.
“In this era of corporate greed and union busting, management seems to hold all the cards.

Just in time for Succession‘s end, let’s look at method acting. The Criterion Channel are highlighting the controversial practice in a 27-film series centered on Brando, Newman, Nicholson, and many other’s embodiment of “an intensely personal, internalized, and naturalistic approach to performance.” That series makes mention of Marilyn Monroe, who gets her own, 11-title highlight––the iconic commingling with deeper cuts.

Although King Charles III became Britain’s monarch when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died on Sept. 8, 2022, his official crowning was set several months later. Prior to his coronation, the public already had a small sample size of what type of monarch Charles will be and royal watchers are hoping he has a much better reign than the kings with the same name who have come before him.
Here’s what happened during the disastrous reigns of King Charles I and King Charles II.

Actor James Cromwell is bringing back his Farmer Hoggett persona from ‘Babe’ in a new video. In early April, the actor, 83, helped save a piglet that fell off a slaughterhouse truck and named the baby animal ‘Babe’, after his famous pig costar from the 1995 movie ‘Babe’, reports ‘People’.
In a new video for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Cromwell shares the baby rescue pig’s story and even sings a few lines of Farmer Hoggett’s song from ‘Babe’: “If I Had Words.”
In the film, the song comes when Cromwell’s character encourages the titular pig to drink from a milk bottle. In the PETA spot, the Succession actor holds Babe the rescue piglet in his arms and lightly strokes the farm animal as he sings the song from the movie.
The piglet reacts to Cromwell’s song by squealing, then lying on Cromwell’s lap and falling asleep.

Leave it to “Succession” to use its final season to flip the script on the 2023 Emmy race. The unexpected events of Season 4’s third episode could upend several major acting categories and lead to plenty of drama as the HBO series potentially upsets the Emmy balance.
Major spoilers for the “Succession” episode “Connor’s Wedding” to follow.
The shock came early in the episode, when the children of media mogul Logan Roy (Brian Cox) learn that he has collapsed on an airplane and died. His death wasn’t necessarily a surprise — after all, the title of the show itself alludes to who will take over for the Roy patriarch in the event of his demise. And death has always loomed over the show ever since Logan suffered a massive stroke in the series’ first episode.

Succession star James Cromwell has helped “save” a piglet who fell off a meat truck.
The 83-year-old, who plays Logan Roy’s brother Ewan in the HBO series, is known for taking part in high-profile protests about the mistreatment of animals.
Cromwell first went vegetarian in 1974, then became vegan in 1995 after playing Farmer Hoggett in the film Babe.
On Friday (7 April), Cromwell met a piglet who had been rescued by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), which claimed the animal fell off a truck as he was being taken to be fattened for slaughter.
The animal was found scraped, bruised and covered in mud, and was named Babe by Cromwell in honour of the film that inspired him to go vegan.
In a statement shared with Peta, Cromwell said: “Having had the privilege of witnessing and experiencing pigs’ intelligence and inquisitive personalities while filming the movie Babe changed...

The Gold Derby predictions center event for the 2023 Emmy Awards has now added the Drama Guest Actor category. Last year, “Succession” dominated this category with four of the six slots for guests Adrien Brody, James Cromwell, Arian Moayed, and Alexander Skarsgård. As of this writing, we anticipate both Cromwell and Moayed will be guest eligible — Moayed has already appeared in one Season 4 episode so far — while Skarsgård may appear in enough episodes to be deemed supporting. With the 2022 victor Colman Domingo (“Euphoria”) and nominee Tom Pelphrey (“Ozark”) ineligible, there will be at least three...

Actor James Cromwell, who portrays Ewan Roy in the hit series ‘Succession’, helped save a piglet who fell off a transport truck headed to a facility where he would have been fattened for slaughter.
The little piglet has been named ‘Babe’ in honour of the film in which Cromwell, who is also a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) honourary board member, starred as Farmer Hoggett. That role inspired him to go vegan, reports Deadline.
Cromwell issued a statement on the pig’s rescue.
“Having had the privilege of witnessing and experiencing pigs’ intelligence and inquisitive personalities while filming the movie Babe, I jumped at the chance to give a real-life Babe a new lease on life. Every pig deserves to live out their life at a sanctuary, choosing when to frolic, where to forage, and how to spend their time.”

In a heartfelt example of life imitating art, “Babe” star James Cromwell is helping save a real baby big from being slaughtered. Cromwell serves as an honorary director at PETA and is working with the animal rights organization to transfer a piglet to the Indraloka Animal Sanctuary after it fell off a truck that was transporting it to be fattened for slaughter.
According to PETA, the abandoned piglet was found “scraped, bruised and covered in mud” when he was rescued shortly before the Easter holiday weekend. Cromwell met the piglet virtually (see photo below) and named him Babe, a nod to his films “Babe” (1995) and “Babe: Pig in the City” (1998). Cromwell starred in the franchise as Arthur Hoggett, a farmer who becomes the father of the eponymous orphaned pig.
