There's a myopia to "Diana," the new film about the divorce and last great romance of Princess Diana's life, that fits its subject like one of Diana's signature, custom-tailored gowns.
Isolated, focused on her image, her few contacts with the outside world and her work, when this lonely and lovelorn woman (Naomi Watts) zeroes in on something or someone, it seems obsessive, smothering and all-consuming.
And dismiss it as worthy of a Lifetime Original Movie if you want, but this film from the director of the Fuhrer bunker drama "Downfall" gives us insights into this poor little royal plaything that Americans, at least, will find eye-opening.
Based on "Diana, Her Last Love," by Kate Snell, Oliver Hirschbiegel's film depicts a manipulator practicing her most withering lines about her failed marriage to Prince Charles in front of a vanity mirror.
"There were three of us in this marriage," she famously told her TV interrogator.

Diana is a film about a royal subject that is not given a royal treatment. From the pen of first-time screenwriter Stephen Jeffreys, it is a flat rendition of a fascinating public figure, settling on a focus of the Princess of Wales’ love affair with heart surgeon Hazmat Khan, which ultimately turns its protagonist into a withering, indecisive, lovesick girl. Naomi Watts, an actor often strong-willed and full of grace, brings to Princess Diana a complexion that the script slights for a more superficial romantic angle.
The biopic only briefly touches on Diana’s desire for privacy away from the prying paparazzi, as well as her humanitarian work in the mid-1990s to ban land mines. Interestingly, these are also the most compelling sections of the film, which directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall). Ultimately, the soapy romance between Diana and Haznat (Naveen Andrews) turns Diana into a clumsy, corny trifle,...

I’m no fan of the British royals, but if I were, I think I’d be fairly cheesed off that this wet blanket of a flick transforms the beloved Diana, Princess of Wales, into a drippy, unappealing rom-com heroine, sort of like Bridget Jones with bodyguards (whom she can’t stand cuz they just won’t let her be herself *stamps foot*). As a big fan of good storytelling, I absolutely am cheesed off that Diana cannot seem to decide what it’s aiming to do with the final few years of her life. If it wanted to show...

From the use of Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas" (twice) to choice morsels of quotes such as, "Wherever you are, death will find you, even if you hide yourselves in firmly constructed towers" (from the Koran), the specter of death haunts "Diana." While that's not a surprise, given that the story tracks her life in the two years leading up (and including) her passing, it's just one of many elements the script by Stephen Jeffreys ("The Libertine") isn't quite sure how to handle. Set against a chronicle of Princess Diana's last and most meaningful relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, it's a fine balance between tragedy and ghoulishness, and sadly, the film never finds it. Graceless, clumsy and uncertain, "Diana" is the result of what happens in trying to honor the late Princess by engaging in the very tabloid speculation that marred her life. In the slight defense of the film,...

The film Diana takes audiences into the private realm of one of the world’s most iconic and inescapably public women — the Princess of Wales, Diana (two-time Oscar® nominee Naomi Watts) — in the last two years of her meteoric life. On the occasion of the 16th anniversary of her sudden death, acclaimed director Oliver Hirschbiegel (the Oscar®-nominated Downfall) explores Diana’s final rite of passage: a secret love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews, “Lost,” The English Patient), the human complications of which reveal the Princess’s climactic days in a compelling new light.
Hirschbiegel directs from a screenplay by award-winning playwright Stephen Jeffreys, inspired by the book Diana: Her Last Love by Kate Snell, which was in turn drawn from extensive interviews with close friends and confidantes. ★☆☆☆☆ Eyebrows were raised when German filmmaker Oliver Hirschbiegel - best-known for depicting the final days of Adolf Hitler in 2004's acclaimed Downfall - was announced as the director of a new feature focusing on the last two years in the life of Diana, Princess of Wales. Undeterred by his naysayers, Hirschbiegel pressed on with production, and next week unleashes his Diana (2013) onto the unsuspecting general public. Yet, few could have predicted the bizarre, staccato rendering of the "People's Princess" Hirschbiegel offers, with Stephen Jeffreys' ripe screenplay more suited to pantomime theatre than serious cinema.
Bookended by the fatal Parisian car crash that claimed the Princess' life on 31 August, 1997, Hirschbiegel's Mills & Boon-esque misfire centres on the romance between Diana (Naomi Watts) and Pakistani surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews) following her separation from the Prince of Wales. Distraught by her treatment at the hands of the Windsors, Diana throws herself...

Imagine, if you will, sitting down on a Thursday evening to watch a satirical comedy show, a show that portrays someone who was at one time the most famous woman on the planet as a ditzy, blonde singleton, bumbling her way through conversations and getting into all sorts of trouble. Diana could so nearly have been this show were it not for the dull love story sandwiched in between the often bizarre, wooden dialogue.
The film begins in Paris, 1997, with a scene that foreshadows her inevitable fate. We then see events from the final two years of her life play out with the narrative focusing on her relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews). Very little of the relationship is officially documented, leaving a huge number of blanks for the filmmakers to fill in, a task which they attempt with gusto. The romantic drama focuses on the final two years of Diana's life, and specifically her relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews).
Digital Spy sat down with Watts and Hirschbiegel to discuss the challenges of portraying Diana on screen, and the physical preparation Watts undertook for the role.
Watts also discussed the sympathy she felt for Diana's lack of privacy, given her own experiences with the paparazzi, while Hirschbiegel compared the experience of making Diana to his 2004 drama Downfall, which followed Adolf Hitler's final days.
The script was written by Stephen Jeffreys, while the film's supporting cast features Douglas Hodge, Geraldine James, Charles Edwards and Juliet Stevenson.
Diana is released in the UK on September 20, and in the Us on November 1.

UK critics have lashed Diana, the biopic starring Naomi Watts as Princess Diana, pouring scorn on the performances, screenplay and Oliver Hirschbiegel.s direction.
The film, which opens in Australia on October 10 via the Becker Film Group, was almost universally panned after its world premiere in London on Thursday night.
Stephen Jeffreys. screenplay based on the Kate Snell book Diana - Her Last Love charts the two years leading up to her death in 1997, focusing on her affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews).
.Poor Princess Diana,. declared The Guardian.s Peter Bradshaw. .I hesitate to use the term .car crash cinema.. But the awful truth is that, 16 years after that terrible day in 1997, she has died another awful death. This is due to an excruciatingly well-intentioned, reverential and sentimental biopic about her troubled final years, laced with bizarre cardboard dialogue . a tabloid fantasy of how famous and important people speak in private.

Earlier tonight the red carpet went down in Leicester Square for the second time this week, as the cast and crew of Diana came out for the film’s premiere.
It’s been 16 years since Diana’s death, and from the size of the crowds in the Square it would appear that public interest in the former Princess of Wales hasn’t waned. Nor it seems has press interest, and we joined the huddled masses of journalists, packed into the press pens waiting to speak to the stars and cast of the movie.
Our aim for the evening was simple, to find out what it was like for the cast and crew to recreate a little known period in the life of one of the 20th Century’s most famous women. Amongst the interviewees were director, Oliver Hirschbiegel, actor Naveen Andrews, of course star Naomi Watts and writer Stephen Jeffreys,...

Early on in Oliver Hirschbiegel's mind-bogglingly misjudged Princess Diana biopic, we're shown a key recreated portion of her iconic BBC Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, during which she admits to having self-harmed in the past. Naomi Watts, here taking on what was arguably always a poisoned chalice, has said that she became "obsessed" with re-watching the Bashir interview during her research, and the use of this segment in particular would seem to suggest that Hirschbiegel is approaching this as a promisingly layered character study.
Instead, you can almost hear screenwriter Stephen Jeffreys declaring "now, that's quite enough of that" as soon as he's able to tick off the Obligatory Psychological Delving box. At this point the script take a hard right turn into the less-than-fruitful dramatic pastures...

Finally eOne has stepped up and set a limited, November 1 release date for Diana, their Princess Di movie starring Naomi Watts in the title role, perhaps to take advantage of the small controversy that started around the film just last week. The film, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall), professes to take audiences into the private realm of the Princess of Wales, Diana (Watts) during the last two years of her life. The primary topic is her secret love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews) and the real Khan doesn't seem too impressed with what he sees. According to The Telegraph, Khan insists the film does not tell the whole story saying award-winning playwright Stephen Jeffreys' screenplay is "completely wrong". He addds, "It is based on gossip and Diana's friends talking about a relationship that they didn't know much about, and some of my relatives who didn't know much about it either.

Entertainment One has set Princess Diana biopic "Diana" for a November 1st limited release, with expansion in the following weeks. Starring two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts (clearly hoping for a third here), the Oliver Hirschbiegel-directed film looks at the last two years of Diana's life and her relationship with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews). The film comes from a screenplay by Stephen Jeffreys, inspired by the book "Diana: Her Last Love," by Kate Snell. As described by EOne: "The film is a window into the tumultuous, change-filled period from 1995-1997 in the wake of Diana’s shattering divorce from Prince Charles and at the moment when she stood on the cusp of a different life, evolving into a global humanitarian, mastering her fame and becoming her own woman." If in contention, Watts' performance could have her competing against her longtime friend Nicole Kidman, who is also playing...

Hirschbiegel directed the film from a screenplay by award-winning playwright Stephen Jeffreys, inspired by the book Diana: Her Last Love by Kate Snell which was, in turn, drawn from extensive interviews with close friends and confidantes. It would seem Oliver Hirschbiegel's Diana aims to be big in the UK and Japan as those are the only two territories the film is getting any kind of marketing as it has, more or less, skipped the fall festival circuit with a single appearance at the Zurich Film Festival planned. I'm not sure of eOne knows this, but if a run at the Oscars is what you're looking for you might want to make sure a film such as this has a big appearance closer to the U.S. Just my suggestion. Still undated domestically, Diana takes audiences into the private realm of one the world's most iconic and inescapably public women -- the Princess of Wales, Diana (Naomi Watts) -- in the last two years of her life. Juliet Stevenson, Naveen Andrews, Douglas Hodge and Geraldine James co-star Hirschbiegel directs from a screenplay by award-winning playwright Stephen Jeffreys,...

"He doesn't treat me like a princess. It's almost as if he doesn't know who I am." After the teaser trailer for Oliver Hirschbiegel's biopic on Princess Diana only showed Naomi Watts as the title royal, a new international trailer for Diana finally begins to unfold the whole story. "Lost" star Naveen Andrews plays Dr. Hasnat Kahn, who was her secret lover for two years before their relationship was revealed in 2008. At times this feels a bit melodramatic, but Watts' puts on an awards worthy performance, and the attention to detail to real-life is impressive, especially the sequence which turns into a real tabloid snapshot. Watch it! The international trailer for Oliver Hirschbiegel's Diana, from The Daily Telegraph (via The Film Stage): Diana, originally Caught in Flight, is directed by German filmmaker Oliver Hirschbiegel (The Experiment, Downfall, The Invasion) described as the "love story between a princess...

Could this be the year that Naomi Watts bring home an Oscar? It may be early days yet, but with plenty of early buzz surrounding Oliver Hirschbiegel’s upcoming biopic, Diana, things are certainly looking good.
The first teaser trailer surfaced earlier in the summer, and it was very much just a teaser – we saw a handful of glimpses of Watts in the eponymous role, starring as the People’s Princess, and we got absolutely no dialogue. With its September release date on the horizon, however, eOne have released the main trailer, which gives us a much better look at what will soon be heading into cinemas.

Coming off the back of her Oscar-nominated performance in The Impossible, Naomi Watts will return to cinemas later this year in a role that is very much primed for another run at the Oscars, with Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Diana marking the first major biopic of Princess Diana since her death in 1997.
With its UK release date sitting nicely on the horizon, the first teaser trailer has been released online, painting a rather beautiful portrait of the People’s Princess.

History suggests that this country cares deeply about Princess Diana, so the release of Oliver Hirschbiegel's biopic Diana should be one eagerly anticipated by, well, your mum. And possibly yourself. Naomi Watts stars in the film, and you can see her - but not hear her - in action below. brightcove.createExperiences();The film focuses on the last two years of Diana's life, looking at her relationships with surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews) and Dodi Fayed (Cas Anvar). That's about all we know at present, but the script comes from playwright Stephen Jeffreys, who wrote The Libertine among other things. From the looks of this trailer, they've certainly nailed Diana's hair and wardrobe.Diana hits cinemas on September 5 this year, just in time for awards season. We're not sure that's a coincidence.
