Paul Murdaugh and his mother, Maggie, were murdered at the Murdaugh residence at 4147 Mossel Road in Islandton on this date. The first person to find the body was Paul’s father and Maggie’s husband, Alex Murdaugh, and it was he who reported it to the police. Trying to get people on camera to talk about the titular family for “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal,” was a tough thing to accomplish for executive producer Michael Gasparro. “It was terribly difficult to get people. This is a small community. We had a really hard time talking to people. It’s Hampton, South Carolina. They were scared and I think that people are still scared,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts panel on TV Documentaries (watch the exclusive video interview above).
But fear about the family wasn’t the only reason the crew had a hard time talking to people. “There’s also multiple documentaries, so it was very competitive and it was an ongoing story, which is also really difficult since you’re not taking a story from the past and telling it today.”

In Memoriam 2022: 100 Great Celebrities Who Died In 2022
At first, authorities believed the head wound was a gunshot, but after a search for cartridge cases and bullet fragments came up empty, his death was ruled a hit-and-run due to blunt head trauma. However, no glass, vehicle fragments or tire marks that would be consistent with a hit-and-run were found at the scene.
The case quickly went cold. The Murdaugh name was mentioned many times throughout the investigation, as the accident occurred 15 miles from the Murdaugh house. Classmates of Smith’s allegedly approached Smith’s mother, Sandy Smith,...
