Because it spans over 50 years, “The Irishman” required “a huge range” of looks for Robert De Niro, makeup artist Carla White reveals. White spoke extensively about her work on Martin Scorsese‘s gangland epic, for which she personally supervised De Niro’s different makeup appliances, in a new behind-the-scenes featurette. Watch the exclusive video above.
The Netflix release “takes place from 1949 to 2000,” Scorsese states, “and it goes back-and-forth in time continuously” in telling the story of Frank Sheeran (De Niro), a truck driver who becomes a hitman after becoming involved with Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) and mob boss Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci). Throughout the film, we get glimpses of Sheeran in various stages of his life, from early middle age to the end of his life.

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Check out the full list of nominees below,...

For an actor, transforming into your character sometimes takes more than technique; the clothes or makeup they're wearing can often play a huge part in the process. Just ask Michelle Williams. No surprise a Hollywood movie would have expensive costume pieces, however, why not just style the actress's own hair? Sometimes its a matter of length. (As the Times states, "In 'My Week With Marilyn' (2011) Michelle Williams's locks were far too short.") Other times, it's needed for continuity. Take, for instance, Katherine Heigl in "One for the Money." "It was hard to maintain Katherine Heigl...
