In a sign of how serious the cost-cutting efforts are at Condé Nast, The New Yorker has parted ways with longtime contributor and satirist Andy Borowitz.
The humorist acknowledged the cuts on his Facebook page. “Dear readers, If I May Be Serious: Because of its financial difficulties, The New Yorker has been forced to cut costs. As a result, it has decided to stop publishing The Borowitz Report,” he wrote. “I want to thank my colleagues at The New Yorker who have made writing for it such an honor for the past 25 years. Condé Nast plans to cut 5% of its workforce, acknowledging the toll of digital video’s shift toward short-form fare inspired by TikTok.
The parent company of well-established media brands like Vanity Fair, GQ and The New Yorker will cut about 270 employees from its global ranks of about 5,400. CEO Roger Lynch informed staffers about the cutbacks this morning in a memo. (Read it below.)
Condé Nast Entertainment remains active in funneling a number of projects to streaming services, movie studios and TV and podcast networks. Agnes Chu exited as head of Cne last month in a restructuring, but the company still has about 70 projects in development and 10 in active production.
Digital video is beset by challenges, however, as Lynch acknowledged in his memo. “This year in particular, video has been a volatile area of the industry as audiences move to places like TikTok and YouTube Shorts (up 600% over the last two years alone),” he wrote.

Publishing giant Condé Nast is set to undergo a significant restructuring.
In a memo to employees Wednesday, CEO Roger Lynch said the company will cut about 5 percent of its workforce in the coming months as it seeks to adapt to a rapidly changing media environment. With more than 5,000 employees, the total number of cuts will be in the hundreds.
“As many of you have heard me say before, we are in an industry that is changing,” Lynch wrote in the memo. “Our audiences are changing, technology is changing, and what advertisers want from us is changing. With all of this change surrounding us, the only certain mistake is to not change ourselves.”
To that end, the company is closing open job postings, rethinking some long-term projects and looking to reduce its real estate footprint, in addition to the staff cuts. Condé titles include Vogue, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker and Wired.

Exclusive: A story about a Fiji surf paradise gone wrong by David Kushner, the journalist behind A24’s Zola, is to be turned into a documentary.
Kushner has penned Paradise Lost for Vanity Fair and the story is now being adapted by Anchor Entertainment, the production company behind HBO’s Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall, and Vanity Fair Studios.
The story follows Navrin, Woody, and Jona – two Aussie surfer bros and their local partner – who thought they’d found their own little slice of paradise in Fiji. That was until the deep-pocketed Chinese developer set up shop next door and started digging up the reef offshore. Amid an advertising downturn, media planners will be making their more selective bets after attending the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s Newfronts this year, set for May 1-4 in New York. As executives ready their pitches, here are a few key questions for the main presenters.
Amazon
It’s already an advertising powerhouse, quietly generating more than $37 billion in ad revenue last year. But most of that ad revenue was tied to its retail business, where sellers are fighting to get in front of consumers. The Newfronts are more focused on video, where Amazon’s live sports properties and Freevee free streaming service are expected to have top billing. Thursday Night Football has quickly become the most popular live-streamed programming available, and the company is betting that its video ad business has room to expand. And there’s Twitch and the Fire TV platform, which also are expected to play a part in the pitch.

Based on its first trailer, FX’s upcoming docuseries about Hillsong Church seems as though it’s going to be as explosive as its subject matter.
In this first look at “The Secrets of Hillsong,” the series accuses Hillsong of “child abuse, labor abuse and sexual assault.” The four-part series is set to premiere on FX on May 19 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt.
The trailer features interview footage of disgraced ex-pastor Carl Lentz. The celebrity pastor served as a spiritual advisor to Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber and Kendall Jenner before he was fired in 2020. According to Hillsong Global Pastor Brian Houston, Lentz was fired for “leadership issues and breaches of trust, plus a recent revelation of moral failures.” But as the docuseries teases, there may be more to this story.
“You do not want to be in this chair. I cannot stress it enough,” Lentz says in the trailer.

For years, Los Angeles-based Hillsong Church had been a popular place of worship for celebrities, attracting the likes of Justin Bieber, Chris Pratt and Kendall Jenner — until now-disgraced pastor Carl Lentz was hit with multiple scandals, including the revelation of an affair, accusations of covering up child sexual abuse, and embezzling church funds.
FX’s “The Secrets of Hillsong”, a new four-episode investigative documentary series explores the rise and fall of the controversial church, featuring the first interviews with former pastors Carl and Laura Lentz since their ouster from the church, and based on the explosive original reporting by Vanity Fair journalists Alex French and Dan Adler.

FX has set a new docuseries, “The Secrets of Hillsong,” which will feature the first interviews with married couple Carl and Laura Lentz since they were ousted as pastors of the infamous megachurch.
The four-part series is based on reporting from Vanity Fair’s Alex French and Dan Adler about Hillsong, which became famous for attracting celebrities like Justin and Hailey Bieber and Kylie and Kendall Jenner — before the church was exposed for involvement in misconduct including marital infidelity and child sexual abuse.
The church was previously the subject of the Discovery+ docuseries “Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed.”
Along with the Lentzes, “The Secrets of Hillsong” includes interviews with former congregants and others connected to the church, such as Tiff Perez, Ashley Jones and Mary Jones, Josh Canfield, Janice Lagata, Geoff Bullock, David Shoebridge, David Cowdrey and Tanya Levin.
Stacey Lee directs the docuseries, which hails from Scout Productions and Vanity Fair Studios.

Exclusive: Oscar season used to boil down to one main thing for Condé Nast: Vanity Fair‘s party. While the famed bash is back this year, there’s also a more consequential reason for the company to feel festive: The New Yorker‘s record five nominations across all three short film categories.
Stranger at the Gate and Haulout are in the Documentary Short Film field; Ice Merchants and The Flying Sailor are up for Animated Short Film, with Night Ride represented in Live Action Short Film. The haul marks a high point for Agnes Chu, who left her role as head of content for Disney+ in 2020 to become president of Condé Nast Entertainment. Feature projects have also been breaking through, with recent New Yorker-based projects including Spiderhead debuting last year on Netflix and Cat Person world-premiering last month at Sundance.

Onyx has ordered a scripted comedy from 20th Television featuring Gabourey Sidibe and has made straight to series order on a docuseries about Black Twitter.
The pilot 1266 follows Gabby Brixton (Sidibe), who’s living with her mom and making half-hearted attempts to become a singer/model and overnight millionaire. When she’s fired from her job, she stumbles upon the gig of a lifetime ― phone sex. What initially seems like a quick way to make money turns into a life-changing experience when she meets the women who become her chosen family and learns how powerful, profitable and prolific her voice can be.
The series is inspired by the true-life story of Sidibe, who is executive producing with Thembi Banks (Only Murders in the Building), Steven Canals (Pose), and Julie Bean (grown-ish), with Jill Kaplan to serve as a non-writing executive producer. Onyx Collective is bulking up.
The Disney-owned brand, which is expressly focused on programming from creators of color and other underrepresented voices, announced Saturday a pilot pickup for a Gabourey Sidibe comedy, tentatively titled 1266, and a straight-to-series order for a multi-party documentary series about Black Twitter. The latter is based on Jason Parham’s widely read 2021 Wired article, “A People’s History of Black Twitter.”
The comedy, which hails from corporate cousin 20th Television, is inspired by Sidibe’s life story. The Academy Award-nominated actress, who rose to fame with Lee Daniels’ 2009 film Precious, will star as Gabby Brixton. In the pilot, Brixton’s life is believed to be aimless ― she’s living with her mom and making half-hearted attempts to become a singer/model. When the Newhouse family tapped veteran media executive Roger Lynch in 2019 to lead the crown jewel of their holdings, Condé Nast, he inherited a company of fiefdoms. Its magazines, infamously, competed with one another for advertisers and cover stars, while Condé’s international business was its own silo. Now three and a half years into the job, Lynch has tried to unify the company into one organization and has shifted investment toward digital and video, turning a storied magazine-company brand into a leading multiplatform player.
I know video has been a top priority. You hired Agnes Chu from Disney to lead Condé Nast Entertainment. How are you thinking about investing in that space?
You start with the pretty insatiable demand for high-quality content coming from streaming services. But the emphasis is on high quality. They’re in heavy competition with each other about having the best content.

Dimmock will serve as executive producer along with Agnes Chu, Helen Estabrook and Sarah Amos for Conde Nast Entertainment.
The doc, which is already in development, will follow the experiences of new mothers and families to see the effects of paid leave — and the lack of it — in people’s lives. Less than a month after the highly anticipated “Top Gun: Maverick” flies into theaters, director Joseph Kosinski is reuniting with star Miles Teller for the Netflix sci-fi thriller “Spiderhead.”
Based on the George Saunders short story “Escape From Spiderhead,” which was originally published in The New Yorker, “Spiderhead” stars Teller as a prisoner at the titular state-of-the-art penitentiary, designed by inventor Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth). Located on a gorgeous island, the island offers its prisoners reduced prison sentences and good accommodations at a price; every inmate wears a surgically attached experimental device that administers mind-altering drugs in their brain.
Although Abnesti is convinced that his work will save lives, the experiments he carries out on his patients begins to test the boundaries of free will. When two subjects, Steve (Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett) form a romantic connection, the two begin to rebel against him and his attempts to program them.

On the second Monday of September, just one week ahead of her one-year anniversary as president of Condé Nast Entertainment, Agnes Chu attended her first Met Gala. She walked the red carpet outside New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Inside, she sat at a table opposite Elon Musk, where she took in a tribute to Broadway and Justin Bieber’s “jaw-dropping” live performance. She also had a bit of a “geeky girl” reaction when meeting “Game of Thrones” stars Kit Harington and Rose Leslie.
But beyond the glitz and glamour of celebrity run-ins, Chu’s first Met Gala held larger significance. The function doubled as a litmus test for the new global content strategy of Condé Nast Entertainment, the multimedia arm of the storied magazine company — which counts Vogue, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker and Wired among its Tiffany brands — and is focused on targeting audiences any way they can be reached,...

Ricky Strauss, who led Disney+’s original content efforts, is leaving the company at the end of January.
Strauss’ exit comes more than five months after Agnes Chu, who led the streaming service’s original programming efforts alongside Strauss, left to run Conde Nast Entertainment as its president. Over the past few months, Disney has reorganized multiple times to better prioritize streaming.
In October, Strauss’ role was changed into more of a content curation position rather than development; he also headed up marketing for the streaming service. Both Strauss and Disney streaming boss Rebecca Campbell said the reorganizations factored into Strauss’ decision.
“After nine years with The Walt Disney Company, and much contemplation over the past several months, I have come to the decision that it is time for me to move on to pursue new creative endeavors,” Strauss wrote in a memo Wednesday. “It took much thought and consideration,...
