Going into the 2024 ACM Awards, you didn’t have to be clairvoyant to nail some key predictions. Host Reba McEntire was sure to be both corny and unflappable, Lainey Wilson was a lock to win Entertainer of the Year, and country interloper Post Malone, scruffy and face-tattooed, was going to charm the pants off everyone.
That all of that happened isn’t a bad thing. In fact, there was something especially comforting about the predictability of this year’s ACMs, held for a second year in a row at the...

The country music world shared the stage at the 2024 ACM Awards, where Post Malone performed songs from his upcoming country album, Dua Lipa joined Chris Stapleton for a duet, and Avril Lavigne and Noah Kahan partnered with country musicians onstage.
It almost felt like Beyoncé — who recently made history on the country charts with Cowboy Country — might pop up. She didn’t Thursday night, but host Reba McEntire did reference Queen Bey’s historic project during her opening monologue.
“We’re here to talk about country music and how everyone is invited and welcome here at country music’s party of the year. From Mother Maybelle to Cowboy Carter, country music is so big in 2024 that there’s room for everybody,” she said. “We all love country [music] and we all are country, and we’re keeping the circle unbroken, but growing it to even bigger and better.”

Carlene Carter issued a statement Friday welcoming Beyoncé to the family upon release of her new album, Cowboy Carter.
Carter is the daughter of country royalty in mother June Carter Cash, and is a star in her own right.
“I’ve caught wind of some negativity over the release of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, her new country album,” Carter said. “As a Carter Girl myself and coming from a long line of Carter Girls, I’m moved to ask why anyone would treat a Carter this way? She is an incredibly talented and creative woman who obviously wanted to do this because she likes country music, In my book, she’s one of us Carter women and we have always pushed the boundaries by trying whatever music we felt in our hearts and taking spirit-driven risks.”
The Carter family had some of the earliest country recordings, dating to the 1920s and Mother Maybelle Carter.

The future June Carter Cash was one of Elvis Presley’s early friends in the music industry. She was very welcoming to Elvis as he worked his way to success, even telling him to look her up whenever he was in Nashville. He took this invitation a bit too far when he arrived at her house and discovered nobody was home. Elvis and his friend broke into the home and wrecked some of her expensive belongings.
Elvis snuck into June Carter Cash’s house
In the mid-1950s, Elvis met a number of big names in country music, including the future June Carter Cash. At the time, she was married to Carl Smith and invited Elvis to stay with her and her husband whenever he was in Nashville.
“Well, we took her at her word,” Elvis’ friend and bodyguard, Red West, said in the book Elvis: What Happened? by Steve Dunleavy.

June Carter Cash was destined to be a country music star. She was the daughter of Maybelle Carter, who revolutionized the way country music musicians played their guitars, and, later, the wife and better half of superstar Johnny Cash.
Today, Carter's life and career have become intertwined with the Man in Black, but she made her professional debut at the Grand Ole Opry and toured with Elvis Presley before hooking up with Cash. So when Reese Witherspoon was tapped to play Carter in the Johnny Cash biopic, "Walk the Line," she knew she had some pretty big stage shoes to fill.
Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, Witherspoon certainly knew that portraying a member of country music royalty was a big job, but she was up for it. However, she was far less confident about singing Carter's famous songs, which she had not initially agreed to do.

The birth of banjo great Earl Scruggs — born 96 years ago on January 6th, 1924, in the Cleveland County community of Flint Hill, North Carolina — predated the debut of the Grand Ole Opry by less than two years, but since then the musician has become synonymous with the Opry, as well as bluegrass and country music.
In late September 1961, Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt, and their band, the Foggy Mountain Boys, played a show at Greenville, South Carolina’s Memorial Auditorium, alongside fellow Opry stars Ray Price, Porter Wagoner, Minnie Pearl, Mother Maybelle Carter,...

Carlene Carter, whose family legacy was explored at length in Ken Burns’ Country Music, turns 64 on Thursday. The granddaughter of Mother Maybelle Carter, and daughter of June Carter Cash and singer Carl Smith, Carter made her recording debut in 1974 with “Friendly Gates,” a track from stepfather Johnny Cash’s LP The Junkie and the Juicehead, Minus Me. The album, which also featured a solo cut by June Carter Cash, was a true family affair, shining early solo spotlights on Cash’s daughter Rosanne, and Carlene’s sister, Rosey. “Friendly Gates...

Happy 73rd birthday to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member Linda Ronstadt, born July 15th, 1946, in Tucson, Arizona. In addition to her mid-Seventies dominance as rock’s premier female artist, Ronstadt also delivered impassioned performances of country songs throughout, and beyond, that era, with crossover hits including the Everly Brothers’ “When Will I Be Loved,” Neil Young’s “Love Is a Rose,” and her Grammy-winning take on Hank Williams’ “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love With You).”

On May 30th, 1980, 39 years ago today, Emmylou Harris released her album Roses in the Snow, which kicks off with Hot Band member Ricky Skaggs’ thrilling fiddle on the title cut. The entire album is stamped from the outset with the superior musicianship for which Skaggs, a future Bluegrass and Country Music Hall of Fame member has become world-renowned. Yet, the Kentucky-born multi-instrumentalist, who was a year away from breaking through to the mainstream, was just one of several notable artists including Johnny Cash, the Whites, Willie Nelson, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas,...

Carlene Carter concluded her first “Wonderful World of Women Who Write” series of in-the-round performances at Nashville’s Bluebird Café Tuesday night, with the casual atmosphere, off-kilter humor, surprise guests and memorable performances making for an enchanting pre-Halloween treat. Featuring Gretchen Peters and Matraca Berg, with additional unannounced performances by Terri Clark and Erin Enderlin, the two-hour show at Nashville’s iconic listening room was yet another reminder of the empowering role of women in country music.

On a pleasantly warm late-September afternoon in Nashville, Carlene Carter leads an informal tour of the charming 100-year-old Queen Anne-style home she shares with her husband, actor Joe Breen. New to the neighborhood since leaving their Santa Ynez, California, home after a decade, it hasn’t taken the couple long to adjust to life in a community largely populated by fellow creative types. Seated on the front porch, Carter chats with Rolling Stone Country while taking drags on an electronic cigarette, which she notes “smells like Skittles.”

Americana music is a term people have a little trouble defining.
After watching PBS Arts Fall Festival's "Nashville 2.0: The Rise of Americana," airing Friday, Nov. 22 (check local listings), try to focus on this, viewers may have the same issue.
However, as long as people watch to learn a little and not expect a definitive view, they can have a great time enjoying fun performances.
Rosanne Cash, who sang 10 songs at a gathering of reporters last summer, then spoke exclusively with Zap2it, reflects on Americana.
"I define it as roots music, with a heavy emphasis on real songwriting and literate songwriting," she says, leaning back into a couch and sipping a glass of wine. "It is authentic, connecting, not just assaulting your sense. Whether bluegrass or folk, it is rooted in something real about songwriting."

Nashville, Tenn. (AP) — Federal prosecutors on Monday announced a deal to drop a criminal case against Gibson Guitar Corp. after the instrument maker acknowledged its importations of exotic wood violated environmental laws.
Nashville-based Gibson agreed to pay a $300,000 penalty, forfeit claims to about $262,000 worth of wood seized by federal agents and contribute $50,000 to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to promote the conservation of protected tree species.
"The agreement is fair and just in that it assesses serious penalties for Gibson's behavior while allowing Gibson to continue to focus on the business of making guitars," U.S. Attorney Jerry Martin said in a statement.
Gibson didn't immediately respond to messages left Monday seeking comment. The privately held company is considered one of the top makers of acoustic and electric guitars, including the iconic Les Paul introduced in 1952.

Here’s a bit of good news:
Tfh guru and friend-of-the-site Allison Anders will direct The June Carter Cash Story, an original movie about the life of June Carter Cash (wife of Johnny). The movie will star Jewel and starts filming (ahem) this June in Atlanta, for a schedule premiere on Lifetime this fall. I’d break down all the posts in the trades (Deadline! The Hollywood Reporter!), but Allison was kind enough to give us the lowdown directly.

While the film is also about her marriage to Johnny Cash, even his drug problem is focused back on June and her own recovery. Many a tear has to fall but it's all in the game... September 24th is the centennial birthday of my late father, the songwriter Carl Sigman (1909-2000), who wrote nearly a thousand songs, including "It's All In The Game," "(Where Do I Begin) Love Story," "Ebb Tide," "What Now, My Love," "Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)" and "Arrivederci, Roma." In the first of two parts, I offer some fun facts and observations on his first half-century. Also born in 1909: Johnny Mercer, Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, Maybelle Carter, Burl Ives, Colonel Tom Parker and, absurdly, Eugene Ionesco. Johnny Mercer, the genteel Georgian who would become one of the greatest American songwriters, lived down the street from my dad in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, and became his mentor. Johnny would show up at the Sigman apartment most nights around dinnertime...
