Looks like a shake-up is happening in Culver City. After initially announcing release dates for “Kraven the Hunter” and “Karate Kid” during the 2024 Summer and Christmas seasons, Sony has decided to delay both films and swap their seasonal positions.
The upcoming “Karate Kid” movie, which sees Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan reprising their roles from various iterations of the franchise, was originally slated to hit theaters on December 13, 2024. The film will now open six months later on May 30, 2025. A source close to the project told IndieWire that the move will allow the final season of the Macchio-led series “Cobra Kai” to conclude before the film hits theaters. The new positioning also allows the family-friendly film to target a wider audience during summer vacation for many K-12 students.
The move was likely necessitated by the fact that “Cobra Kai” had its final season pushed back by the strikes that brought Hollywood...

When Cobra Kai returns to Netflix for its sixth and final season, the Karate Kid spinoff plans to expand the Miyagiverse significantly. The teen-focused drama Crane kicked martial arts action fans in the face in 2018, building on the Karate Kid legacy started by Ralph Macchio (Daniel Larusso), William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence), and Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi). With every season, Cobra Kai has grown through fan-service casting, interpersonal drama, and hard-hitting action. No one could have predicted the Miyagiverse would expand the way it has because of Cobra Kai, and now the show’s co-creator, Jon Hurwitz, says fans can expect Season 6 to explore the franchise in exciting ways like never before!
In a thread on Twitter/X, Hurwitz assured fans the final season of the series delivers big surprises, in-depth character flashbacks, and plot elements that expand the Miyagiverse.
“Season 6 expands the ‘Karate Kid/Cobra Kai’ universe more than the first 5 seasons combined.

The late Carl Weathers only appeared in four episodes of the critically acclaimed and beloved comedy series "Arrested Development," but the impact he had on the series feels much larger than that low episode count might imply. Playing a heightened version of himself -- an out-of-work actor who's obsessed with mooching off others -- Weathers frequently stole scenes out from under the hilarious Tobias Fünke (David Cross), as the hopeless man's acting teacher, most notably in a hilarious interaction that introduced the phrase, "Baby, you got a stew goin'!" into the cultural lexicon.
In a series that featured a revolving door of terrific guest stars, Weathers was one of the funniest and most memorable. According to "Arrested Development" creator Mitch Hurwitz, we have Weathers himself to thank for the direction and tone of his character on the show. Netflix will not be moving forward with a second season of “Obliterated,” Variety has confirmed.
Hailing from “Cobra Kai” creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, the comedy followed a special forces team who — after believing they’d thwarted a deadly threat to Las Vegas —celebrates their victory accordingly with a party filled with booze, drugs and sex only to discover that a bomb they deactivated was a fake. The now intoxicated team has to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb and save the world.
Shelley Hennig, Nick Zano, Alyson Gorske, C. Thomas Howell, Eugene Kim, Paola Lázaro and Amalia Yoo star.
Hurwitz, Schlossberg and Heald executive produced “Obliterated” with Dina Hillier from Counterbalance Entertainment. Sony Pictures Television is the studio.
The news comes as Hurwitz and Heald recently teased that he and the team were back at work on the sixth and final season of “Cobra Kai.

Netflix has canceled its action comedy series Obliterated after a single season.
The series, from Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, was originally developed for TBS, where it earned a straight to series order in 2019. As TBS cut back on its scripted output, however, Obliterated became a free agent and landed at Netflix in May 2022.
The show follows a special forces team that thwarts a deadly threat to the city of Las Vegas, then spends the night celebrating their successful mission — only to discover that the bomb they disarmed was a decoy. They must scramble to fight off hangovers and other impairments while trying to save the city for real.
Obliterated premiered Nov. 30 on Netflix and landed in the streamer’s worldwide top 10 list of English-language series for six weeks. During that time, the eight-episode season (which has a running time of six hours, 50 minutes) recorded...

Obliterated has lived up to its name. Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of the hourlong action-comedy series.

In a recent TikTok video, Hurwitz said they wrote and filmed the first two episodes of the Disney+ series, and that the third episode was also written.

The reboot of popular 2000s Disney Channel sitcom Lizzie McGuire was cancelled. Now, one of its writers has revealed a few new details about its plot.
Hilary Duff was a huge star among pre-teens in the early 2000s thanks to her portrayal of the eponymous character in Disney Channel sitcom Lizzie McGuire – and its subsequent movie.
The show followed the awkward, klutzy teen as she navigated life, school with best friends Gordo and Miranda, played by Adam Lamberg and Lalaine. There was also her family – her younger brother Matt, played by Jake Thomas, and her embarrassing parents, played by Hallie Todd and Robert Carradine – whose brother David appeared in one episode as a mentor to Matt when he made his own kung fu film.
One memorable aspect of the show was the frequent use of an animated version of Lizzie, which represented her inner monologue. The show’s popularity led...

The hits don’t stop for Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the trio behind Cobra Kai and most recently, Netflix’s latest No. 1 hit, Obliterated.
Obliterated is a return to the trio’s roots which began with raunchy comedies like Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (2004) and its follow-ups Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008), Harold & Kumar Go to Amsterdam (2008) and A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (2011); American Reunion (2012); Blockers (2018); and Hot Tub Time Machine (2010), among others.

Netflix’s newest action comedy, Obliterated, from the Cobra Kai creating trio of Jon Hurwitz, Josh Heald and Hayden Schlossberg, co-stars Nick Zano, Shelley Hennig and Terrence Terrell as part of an elite special forces team who wake up with a massive hangover and are tasked with saving Las Vegas from a nuclear threat.
In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the trio (separately; their answers are combined) reveal what it was like behind the scenes of the thrill-ride adventure series, withstanding Navy Seal training in the sweltering 120-degree Albuquerque heat, doing their own high-octane stunts, and how filming on the Las Vegas Strip — among real vacationers, tourists and pedestrians alike — added an element of authenticity to the scenes.

Shelley Hennig: At the time, I was in the middle of this really intense drama, and I felt like the next project I wanted to do was a comedy.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, right? At least, that’s how it’s supposed to be, but I can’t help but spill the beans on a fantastic trip I recently took to Sin City for the launch of Netflix‘s new series, Obliterated. Premiering today on Netflix, this eight-episode series comes from the guys behind Cobra Kai, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, and is a gloriously profane and non-pc throwback to their Harold & Kumar days – albeit with a heavy dose of Jerry Bruckheimer-style action thrown in.
The show focuses on an elite team of Navy Seals, led by Nick Zano’s Chad McKnight, who, along with a CIA agent, Ava Winters (Shelley Henning) and her tech wiz, Maya (Kimi Rutledge), have just taken down a terrorist cell planning to blow up Las Vegas. Recently, I was lucky enough to interview Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald about their brand-new Netflix show, Obliterated. The series, which follows a very inebriated Navy Seal team trying to take down a terrorist cell in Vegas, is a hilarious mix of intense action and comedy headed by a terrific cast that includes Nick Zano and Shelley Hennig. Yet, of everyone, the show is all but stolen by eighties legend C. Thomas Howell, who shows up as the group’s somewhat insane bomb expert.
In the show, his character, Haggerty, seems to save the day in the opening action sequence and celebrates by getting – as the title suggests – Obliterated. Yet, while the rest of the team indulges mostly in booze (and some mild drugs), he goes all in anything he can find, winding up comatose for several episodes. He steals the show being carried around...

Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald initially set out to write Obliterated as a feature film. But the creators of Netflix’s latest action comedy changed their minds. They felt their ensemble cast of characters would be best served in a series where they would have time to explore each one in depth, and be able to give each character their own adventure.
The result is the eight-episode series now streaming on Netflix, which follows an elite special forces team — made up of an ensemble cast led by Nick Zano and Shelley Hennig — who wake up with a massive hangover and attempt to break up a deal for a nuclear weapon that could obliterate Las Vegas. Terrence Terrell, Paola Lázaro, Kimi Rutledge, Eugene Kim, C. Thomas Howell, Alyson Gorske and Carl Lumbly round out the cast.

Especially in its early installments, 24 used to build in a midseason pause. Jack Bauer would achieve what he thought was his goal — securing the bomb, identifying the conspiratorial kingpin, etc. — and then, after enough time to take a breath but not enough time to use the bathroom, he would discover a Bigger bomb or realize that behind the apparently Big Bad was a Bigger Bad. Gasp!
But what if, instead of merely taking that breath, Jack Bauer had celebrated securing yet another victory for America by doing the keg stand to end all keg stands or dropping a tab of acid — and only then figured out that he still had half a day’s worth of torture, cliffhangers and mountain lions in store?

When the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai Crane kicks its way onto Netflix, it could leave some questions unanswered in the interest of continuing the story in possible spin-offs. Speaking with Collider‘s Perri Nemiroff, Cobra Kai showrunners Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald said “closure” isn’t part of their grand plan for the Miyagi-verse. This statement is bold in an entertainment landscape where fans typically like things wrapped up with a big, red bow. However, some stories can’t end in a universe with limitless potential.

Harold and Kumar's writers are "determined" to make a fourth film. Jon Hurwitz - who co-wrote the 2004 original movie alongside Hayden Schlossberg - has told how the team behind the three comedy films are "dying" to produce a fourth motion picture in the series. Hurwitz told ComicBook.com: "Well, first of all, we are dying to make another one. We've been a little bit busy lately between 'Cobra Kai' and 'Obliterated'. "We had a dinner not long ago. About a month ago with John (Cho) and Kal (Penn)."Hurwitz admitted it is "just a matter of time" before they make the fourth film. He added: "We're all talking about making another one. It's really just a matter of time. "It's figuring out when it could all fit into all of our schedules. "It's something that we're all determined to do. We just need to find the time to do it.

Matthew Perry’s former fiancé, Molly Hurwitz, expressed her “tremendous gratitude” for their loving but complicated relationship in a tribute shared on Instagram.
Hurwitz and Perry started dating in 2018 and got engaged in 2020 but decided to call it off in 2021. In her note, Hurwitz said she “loved [Perry] deeper than I could comprehend” but acknowledged the actor — who long struggled with addiction — was “complicated, and he caused pain like I’d never known.”
She continued: “No one in my adult life has had a more profound impact on me than Matthew Langford Perry.

Friends fans already miss Matthew Perry. The Chandler Bing actor died in October 2023, and he wasn’t married at the time of his death. While he once spoke about potentially marrying his most recent ex-fiancée, Molly Hurwitz, their relationship didn’t work out. And Hurwitz allegedly lost “romantic” interest in Perry following a scandal with the dating app Raya.

Matthew Perry thought he found “the one” with Molly Hurwitz. The Friends actor started dating the literary agent in 2018, and they were engaged by November 2020. Perry was 22 years older than Hurwitz.
“I decided to get engaged,” Perry told People in 2020. “Luckily, I happened to be dating the greatest woman on the face of the planet at this time.”
Another source shared with Ok! Magazine that Perry was happy and motivated with Hurwitz by his side. “Matthew’s been to hell and back.

People say, “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” but what if what’s happening is a five-kiloton nuclear bomb and the team sent to disarm it is hungover to all hell? Welcome to Netflix‘s Obliterated trailer, featuring a misfit band of elite soldiers who, after saving the day, party like Prince told them to party like it’s 1999. The only problem is the bomb they deactivated is a fake, and the actual explosive is armed and ready to blow if they don’t get their sh*t together.

The months-long Hollywood writers’ strike appears to have come to an end. The WGA and AMPTP have apparently reached a tentative agreement allowing film and television writers to get back to work. That’s good news for people working in the industry, as well as for fans, who are now one step closer to getting new episodes of their favorite shows. That includes Netflix’s Cobra Kai, which is set to return for a sixth and final season. But when will new episodes drop? Here’s what we know about the Cobra Kai Season 6 release date.

If you're a fan of action-comedy series like Fubar, then Obliterated could be your next obsession.
Netflix revealed Monday that the Nick Zano (Legends of Tomorrow) and Shelley Hennig (Teen Wolf) series would premiere on Thursday, November 30, 2023.
All eight episodes will be available on that date, so we're not getting a split-season situation like You and The Witcher.

Some days, you just can’t get rid of a bomb. In Netflix‘s Obliterated, a team of decorated soldiers find themselves on the business end of a nasty hangover while trying to stop an impending disaster. Recovering from a night of drug-fueled debauchery is challenging on any front, but doing it while the survival of millions hangs in the balance? That’s what I call a rude awakening. Today, Netflix deployed a gallery of first-look images and a release date for Obliterated, a new high-octane action-comedy series from directors Jon Hurwitz (Cobra Kai) and Hayden Schlossberg (Cobra Kai).

Composer Justin Hurwitz, a four-time Academy Award nominee and two-time winner in 2017 for the six-time Oscar-winning musical “La La Land,” will conduct that score and songs live-to-film with a 52-piece symphony orchestra and jazz band during a screening of the movie at Los Angeles State Historic Park overlooking the downtown L.A. skyline on September 16 at 8 p.m.
Hurwitz earned an Oscar for the “La La Land” original score and shared an Academy Award for the original song “City of Stars” with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. “‘La La Land’ in Concert” is being put on by Street Food Cinema in collaboration with Hurwitz Concerts and Lionsgate, the latter of which produced the film that was written and directed by Damien Chazelle. Chazelle won an Oscar for his direction. The film grossed $151 million in North America and $446 million worldwide against a $30 million production budget.

There was come old-school writer cred on the picket line outside the Fox lot in Century City today. David E. Kelley, he of the 11 Emmys and 30 nominations, is a veteran of multiple WGA strikes going back to 1988. Introducing himself as “David E. Kelley, old writer,” the Love & Death creator — whose many credits also include Big Little Lies, Big Sky, The Lincoln Lawyer, The Undoing, The Practice, Ally McBeal, and Picket Fences — told Deadline why he’s striking this time.
“All the strikes have had merits on the writer’s behalf, but this one more than any other,” said Kelley, holding a picket sign with “Sow Me The Data” handwritten on it. “This is a real unprecedented time, especially when it comes to sharing the data. When one side is not wanting to be forthcoming, that kind of tells you all you need to know.”

Intermittent rain and quite a bit of wind did not appear to deter striking writers from again hitting picket lines throughout Los Angeles on Thursday, many of them galvanized by the previous night’s solidarity rally that drew over 1,800 Writers Guild of America members.
During that Shrine Auditorium gathering, the first of its kind since the strike was called on Monday, guild leadership spoke at length about the issues where the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers remained furthest apart.
“To hear leadership really talk about what it was like to be in the [negotiating] room and to hear the words from them was just mind blowing,” Susan Hurwitz said to The Hollywood Reporter on the Thursday picket line at Sony Pictures Studios. A writer-producer whose credits include The Tick and Preacher, Hurwitz also addressed the other unions — the DGA, SAG-AFTRA, IATSE — that have voiced their support of the writers.

Sitcom favorite “Arrested Development” isn’t leaving Netflix after all, thanks to a new deal with Disney.
The exit of the series, which began on Fox and was continued at Netflix, was reported last month, with both editions of the Bluth family saga set to be removed entirely on March 15. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that the series, which starred Jason Bateman, Jessica Walter, Michael Cera, Tony Hale and Jeffrey Tambor, was still available.
Netflix will now become the exclusive subscription streaming home of the Mitchell Hurwitz-created series, which means that Hulu will have to give up rights to the sitcom’s first three seasons, according to Vulture.

The films in the running for the 2023 Best Original Score Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Babylon,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “The Fabelmans.” Our current odds indicate that “Babylon” (69/20) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (19/5), “The Fabelmans” (4/1), “The Banshees of Inisherin” (9/2), and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (9/2).
Four of the seven individual artists included in this lineup are returning contenders, with the newcomer subset consisting of Son Lux bandmates and fellow “Everything Everywhere All at Once” nominees Rafiq Bhatia, Ian Chang, and Ryan Lott. Bhatia and Chang are two of only nine Asian composers to ever achieve academy recognition and could become the first such champions since A. R. Rahman (“Slumdog Millionaire”) in 2009.

“Babylon” only has three Oscar nominations, but if you go by the odds, it will win two of them: Best Production Design, which it’s dominated all season, and Best Original Score, where Justin Hurwitz has recently lost some ground to “All Quiet on the Western Front,” composed by Volker Bertelmann. That race could come down to the wire and wind up a whole lot closer than the composers’ first Oscar showdown.
Hurwitz and Bertelmann have faced off at the Oscars before, though you might not realize it at first glance. Bertelmann also performs under the name Hauschka, which was how he was credited for his “Lion” (2016) score, co-written with Dustin O’Halloran. That season, Hauschka and O’Halloran lost the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award, BAFTA and Oscar to Hurwitz, who swept for “La La Land.”
While it was obvious Hurwitz would win the Oscar back then, that’s not the case this time around.

Can you imagine being nominated in this category and hearing the very last nominee’s name, and it’s the one and only John Williams, who has received 53 Oscar nominations and won five times? Granted, it’s been almost 30 years since his name was last called on Oscar night, so maybe the other four nominees don’t have so much to worry about, but make no mistake that this is a highly competitive year.

Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” has a strong possibility to win two Oscars on Sunday night despite it only receiving three bids, all in technical categories. What Kyle Smith in the Wall Street Journal called “one of the year’s richest and most ambitious films” is up for Academy Award nominations in Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Score. Although it’s not a favorite to win for its costumes — “Elvis” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” have better shots there, per Gold Derby odds — it can absolutely win both production design and score. Here are the five reasons “Babylon” will win two Oscars on March 12.

Oscar-winning composer Justin Hurwitz has found himself back in the awards race this season, having garnered both a Golden Globe win and an Oscar nomination for his lavish Babylon score. Creating music that complemented the decadence and destructive glamor of 1920s Hollywood found in Damien Chazelle’s Babylon required a lot of experimentation. From using “kazoos and slide whistles” to “wooden floorboards” and multicultural percussionists amongst other unique instruments, Hurwitz and his 98-piece orchestra managed to execute the larger-than-life sounds and eclectic mix of tunes throughout the score, especially that of soundtrack highlight “Voodoo Mama.” In the behind-the-scenes video featured above, Hurwitz provides an in-depth look at the rich and explosive ensemble of harmonies influenced by diverse and modern sounds. “Babylon mixes up a lot of influences,” he tells Deadline. “It has some jazz influences, rock ‘n’ roll, and contemporary dance music in the music. There’s a lot of Middle Eastern and Latin flavors,...

In what may be the most difficult-to-predict score competition in years, the original-music Oscar could go to a sentimental favorite, a past nominee or the newcomer to the race. Academy members begin voting today.
Legendary composer John Williams broke records again by becoming the most nominated living person, earning the highest number of nominations ever in the music categories, and becoming the oldest nominee ever for a competitive award. He is 91.
His nomination for “The Fabelmans” surprised some outsiders, as his fairly spare score is often overshadowed by the several classical pieces performed by Mitzi (Michelle Williams), the character based on director Steven Spielberg’s piano-playing mom. But it passed the 35% rule — that is, more than a third of the total musical content must be original dramatic score — or it would have been disqualified by the Academy’s strict music-branch executive committee.

Cobra Kai has been renewed for season 6 over at Netflix, and while the series found an amazing longevity, the sixth season is touted as the final outing for the kids of the All-Valley Tournaments. As Netflix joins the other streaming platforms in canceling shows, Cobra Kai is not one they wanted to pull the plug on. Instead, series creator and showrunner, Jon Hurwitz has stated on his Twitter that it was the creative team’s decision to make this upcoming season the finale and not Netflix.
On Twitter, a fan asked Hurwitz what his reaction was when Netflix told them it was going to be the last season. Hurwitz replied to the the fan, saying, “Netflix didn’t tell us it was the last season. We told them it was the last season. We’ve always wanted to end Cobra Kai on our own terms and we are grateful we...

According to our current combined predictions, “Babylon” is the front-runner to win Best Original Score with 17/5 odds at this year’s Oscars. However, it is the only contender in the lineup that does not have a corresponding Best Picture nomination. Each of the other four nominees — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “The Fabelmans” — do. Can “Babylon” overcome that hurdle?
Set in Los Angeles during the 1920s, “Babylon” traces the rise and fall of multiple characters at a time when the film industry was transitioning from the silent era to the talkies. Justin Hurwitz may have already won the Golden Globe for his work on “Babylon,” but that movie had four other nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (including Best Film Comedy/Musical). Plus, Hurwitz has so far been undefeated at the Globes as he previously prevailed there for...

The current frontrunner to win the Best Score Oscar is Justin Hurwitz for “Babylon,” with 12 Gold Derby Experts predicting him, but I believe John Williams could surprise in this category for “The Fabelmans,” despite only having the support of two Experts: Sasha Stone (Awards Daily) and Susan King (Gold Derby). Williams’ nomination for “The Fabelmans” is his 53rd overall, which gives him the record for most Oscar bids for a living person; only Walt Disney has more with 59 total. Williams’ work in “The Fabelmans” has been celebrated by many critics, including Maria Lattila, who says in Why Now, “With a classic score from John Williams and precise direction from Spielberg, ‘The Fabelmans’ is one of the finest films about cinema itself.” Are we all underestimating the legendary composer’s chances to win? Here are my top five reasons.
1. He’s 91.
This might be the last chance the Academy gets to recognize John Williams again.

After dominating the BAFTAs with seven wins, Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” just went from Oscars wild card to potential juggernaut in the craft races, where it is tied with “Elvis” for the lead with six nominations. In addition to the BAFTA-winning three categories, Edward Berger’s German-language World War I epic also grabbed nominations for makeup and hairstyling, production design, and VFX.
“All Quiet” appears to be on a similar Oscar trajectory as “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2001), which also scored six craft noms. That’s a record for international features. Ang Lee’s martial arts spectacle (co-starring “Everything Everywhere All at Once” Best Actress nominee Michelle Yeoh) eventually won a record three craft awards: cinematography, original score, and art direction-set decoration (now production design). “All Quiet” hopes to at least match its success.

Justin Hurwitz met Damien Chazelle when both were freshmen in college. Nearly 20 years later, their composer-filmmaker synergy is perhaps the most dynamic in current movies. In Chazelle’s films, Hurwitz’s music is so intuitively synched to the storytelling that the visuals become more alive and happier, as his gorgeously repetitive riffs mix with each other and linger in our minds.
Hurwitz won a Best Score Oscar for Chazelle’s “La La Land” in 2017, along with another statuette for Best Original Song. He’s back at the ceremony again this year for his mighty, moody, idiosyncratic, intoxicating music for Chazelle’s extravagant 1920s Hollywood epic, “Babylon.”
Hurwitz, 38, chatted to TheWrap from his home studio, with a piano to his left and a keyboard to his right.
