Paul Thomas Anderson’s legion of fans will get their chance to see the filmmaker’s latest Inherent Vice – at least those in New York and L.A. after a long build-up of anticipation. Studio Warner Bros. is handling the director’s latest, set in a drug-laced L.A. in the 1970s. Barring some unforeseen cataclysm, the feature is easily going to be this week’s b.o. superstar and likely one of the year’s biggest per screen debuts. How it will fare against other fall b.o. knock-outs like Searchlight’s Birdman or TWC’s The Imitation Game remains to be seen. A slew of Specialty openers will coincide with the Inherent Vice juggernaut. A24 will open Oscar-nominated filmmaker Atom Egoyan’s The Captive day and date after an early fall bow in the director’s native Canada. Sundance Selects will expose Free The Nipple in New York...

For those of you who felt last year’s Prisoners was too lighthearted a jaunt down the misery lane of child abduction, good news: Atom Egoyan’s The Captive is here to cover every parent’s worst nightmare in ghoulish detail. Not psychological detail, mind you. The Captive is bewitched by many aspects of kidnapping and pedophilia: chiefly, the tech, the terminology, and the methods of a modern child abuse ring. But when it comes to characters, acting, direction, or the emotional state of its endangered subjects, The Captive isn’t all that interested.
A deceptively elegant 360-pan of wintery Niagara wilderness introduces the film, which from there on operates with the subtlety and restraint of front-page tabloid font. Egoyan kindly opens the following shot with a TV playing opera in the background, so as to remind you that what you’re watching isn’t quite the pinnacle of distraught human tragedy.

Back when the film premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, we got a teaser trailer for The Captive starring Ryan Reynolds. Now that the film is poised for a release in the United States this fall, a new theatrical trailer for Atom Egoyan's film has arrived, showing off more of the mystery thriller. The story, which also stars Rosario Dawson and Mireille Enos, centers around the disappearance of young girl, and the plot thickens when clues begin to surface that she's alive eight years later. The film didn't really get that warm of a reception at Cannes back in May, and the trailer is edited in a rather peculiar way. Watch? Here's the Us trailer for Atom Egoyan's The Captive from YouTube: The Captive is directed by Atom Egoyan (Chloe, The Devil's Knot), who also co-wrote the script with David Fraser. Canadian director Atom Egoyan has not been enjoying a good streak over the last few years and it's getting to the point now where his output of mediocre (or down right terrible) will begin to outweigh the highlights of his career.

As a celebration of the unprecedented number of Canadian films that competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2014 Cannes International Film Festival, Moviefone Canada is highlighting each of these works.
For decades now, Atom Egoyan has been one of Canada's most celebrated and lauded directors. From massive critical hits such as "Exotica" and "The Sweet Hereafter," he has established himself among the elite of English Canadian film auteurs.
Egoyan is no stranger to the Cannes Film Festival, having unspooled many of his films here, and he was an instrumental member of the jury back in '96, when David Cronenberg won his Special Jury Award for "daring and audacity."

The Captive
Written by Atom Egoyan and David Fraser
Directed by Atom Egoyan
Canada, 2014
Atom Egoyan’s The Captive pits Ryan Reynolds as a blue collar vigilante in an investigatory drama of pedophiles and police-work. However, while its central themes seem reminiscent of the recent Prisoners, its execution is regrettably drawn from cartoons, Lifetime schlock, and the worst traits of primetime detective shows. Following an increasing number of recent failings for the Canadian director, The Captive sets itself up for a return to the form of his heartfelt mid-90s melodrama The Sweet Hereafter, but thanks to the exacerbated direction and faux-camp spirit, it evokes hardly any reaction other than groans and pity-guffaws.
Sporting a Carhartt baseball cap, rugged beard, and questionably ill demeanor, Matthew (Ryan Reynolds) watches on as his daughter and her friend twirl about a Niagara ice skating rink. As he stops for a pie on the way home,...

Welcome back to Cannes Check, In Contention's annual preview of the films in Competition at next month's Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 14. Taking on different selections every day, we'll be examining what they're about, who's involved and what their chances are of snagging an award from Jane Campion's jury. Next up, the third Canadian director in the lineup: Atom Egoyan's "The Captive." The director: Atom Egoyan (Canadian, 53 years old). There was a time when Egoyan looked to be as estimable a festival fixture as his compatriot David Cronenberg, but his career hasn't moved in the direction many thought it would after he won big at Cannes (and scooped a surprise Best Director Oscar nod) for 1997's critical peak “The Sweet Hereafter.” Born in Cairo to Armenian-Egyptian parents – a heritage he'd later explore in his 2002 film “Ararat” – Egoyan largely grew up in British Columbia and studied...

Atom Egoyan makes challenging films, but even by his standards, his 2014 output is going to be tough to watch. While his courtroom drama Devil’s Knot gets a Us release on May 9 – a film about the trial of three teenagers accused of killing three young children in a satanic ritual – his follow-up will be screening in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, and is currently called Captives - though that may change for release in different territories.
Starring Ryan Reynolds, as a father whose young daughter mysteriously disappears, Captives seems to be a film that gradually unfurls – transforming into something increasingly sinister and disturbing, as layers of grimness are deliberately peeled back. It would appear that Egoyan – along with co-writer David Fraser – has created something that relentlessly preys on the worst fears of the audience, including bad things happening to our children, loss, uncertainty, powerlessness, and that horrifying discomfort of intrusion.

Following the announcement of all the hopefully great films that will premiere at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival next month, some of the films are already cranking up the hype machine. One such film is The Captive, a new drama from director Atom Egoyan (Chloe, The Devil's Knot) that stars Ryan Reynolds as a father whose child goes missing when he leaves her alone in his truck for a few minutes while picking up some pie at a local diner. But this isn't your average kidnapping thriller, as there seems to be much more behind the disappearance than meets the eye. This looks like a great thriller and Reynolds needs a good one. U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson
While we were a bit disappointed in Egoyan’s 2013 offering, Devil’s Knot, which managed to hit all the rote clichés of an unnecessary and glamorized reenactment of a rather well documented criminal case, we’re holding onto hope for this latest effort, a glossy looking thriller starring some Egoyan regulars (Bruce Greenwood, Speedman) and some American matinee presence. It seems 2009′s Chloe marked a major turning point for Egoyan, whose independent films once had a distinct tone and attitude. While Chloe was a remake of an Anne Fontaine film and Knot was based on actual events, we’re thinking Egoyan has less pressure facing this venture as there shouldn’t be so much weighted preconception. We’re not crazy about the new title,...

Perhaps not as sturdy or as developed as it is with Cannes or Tiff, Atom Egoyan’s relationship with Sundance remains a good one when you double his output of films directed (Next of Kin and Exotica) with films that he exec-produced in The Saddest Music in the World and Away From Her. Formerly going by the title of “Queen of the Night,” The Captive features Ryan Reynolds, Egoyan lucky charm Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson, Mireille Enos, Kevin Durand, Alexia Fast and the almost always dependable Bruce Greenwood in what should be some welcome genre diversion at the fest and one that will make us forget about the poorly executed Devil’s Knot.

Ddb’s planning director David Chriswick said: “This ad is once again the outcome of a desire to build more engaging brand experiences. Last year’s ‘Toll Booth’ spot got the ball rolling and this new work is a step forward again. The product is great and we’re all determined to make the brand as equally successful through distinctive advertising that people like to spend some time with.”

• Shia Labeouf — apparently undeterred by the onslaught of “Shia Labuff” jokes in the wake of his full-frontal appearance in a recent Sigur Ros music video — is in talks for an unspecified role in director Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac. As the title implies, the film follows the erotic adventures of a woman (Charlotte Gainsbourg) from her first sexual experience through age 50, with von Trier shooting both explicit and not-as-explicit versions of the film. Stellan Skarsgard will play the woman’s husband, but likely not her only sexual partner, because that would be a bit of a let down, frankly. [THR]

Oh hey, Ryan Reynolds...there's a name we haven't heard in a while. Dude has been keeping his head way down since last year's flop "Green Lantern," shooting next summer's blockbuster hopeful "R.I.P.D.," lending his voice to two animated films ("Turbo" and "The Croods"), hanging out with Blake Lively, and watching "Safe House" open earlier this year to some pretty decent numbers. But now he's going to be heading back home to Canada to take on a movie by one of the nations's most well-known filmmakers. Even though he's currently in the midst of production on the West Memphis Three drama "Devil's Knot," Atom Egoyan has his eyes on what's next, and Reynolds will star in "Queen Of The Night" for the director. Co-written by Egoyan and David Fraser, Reynolds plays the father of an abducted child. Eight years after she was taken, a series of disturbing clues convince her father.

Just a year ago, things were not looking up for Ryan Reynolds. Green Lantern, the actor’s major jump into the superhero world landed with a thud, and he even failed to make audiences and critics laugh with The Change-Up. But like most big names in Hollywood, he has found other work, with this year’s successful Safe House and the always bankable genre of animation with the upcoming Turbo and The Croods. According to Deadline, he’s now set for one of his most promising roles in quite some time.

He’s grabbed Reynolds to lead a psychological thriller titled Queen of the Night. David Fraser‘s script was hatched from an idea by Egoyan, which sees Reynolds as “a father who discovers a...
