These days, it seems you can’t go to a film, turn on your television or surf the net without coming across Idris Elba and the army of adoring fans he’s amassed over the years. The English actor has been working overseas since the mid-1990s but really broke through in North America as Russell “Stringer” Bell on the critically acclaimed HBO drama The Wire.
Since then, Elba has headlined the popular BBC crime drama Luther and appeared in countless films, including the Thor series, Netflix drama Beasts of No Nation and this summer’s Star Trek Beyond. Next, he’ll lead the much-anticipated film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. But with such a versatile resume, how does Elba’s newest film, The Take, measure up?

The last time we saw director James Watkins step behind the camera, he was scaring up a storm with 2012’s The Woman in Black. For his follow-up, Bastille Day, he’s changing tack quite a bit with a fast paced actioner that has one foot firmly in the 80’s, back when hero cops played by no one’s rules, not even their own. We find ourselves in Paris, days before France’s national holiday, and the city is a powder keg of political and racial tensions after American pickpocket Michael Mason (Games of Thrones’ Richard Madden) snatches the wrong bag, and inadvertently becomes number one suspect in a terrorist bombing. Enter no nonsense CIA agent Sean Briar (Idris Elba), who is tasked with bringing Mason in for questioning. Soon catching up with quarry, Briar realises something’s rotten in France’s capital, and he and Mason team up to get...

Well, we continue to talk of seeing Idris Elba in more leading man roles (especially in action movies), and this is one of those rare instances where he gets to shine a bit, in that capacity. The actor stars in a Paris-set thriller titled "Bastille Day," that will see him battle terrorists in the City of Light, in a project from Vendome Pictures and Anonymous Content, with James Watkins ("The Woman in Black") directing, from a script penned by Andrew Baldwin (he also scripted a "Bourne" sequel, which I suppose should give you some idea of what to expect from "Bastille Day"). Co-starring Richard Madden, the story follows Michael Mason (Madden),...

Having headlined British crime drama Luther for three seasons, Idris Elba simply disappears into the role of a gruff and steely secret agent, and that’s exactly the archetype he’ll be portraying in James Watkins’ Parisian thriller, Bastille Day.
Watkins, best known for helming Eden Lake and Daniel Radcliffe-fronted horror flick The Woman In Black, is switching gears to dip his toe in the spy thriller genre. Elba, meanwhile, leads the charge as Sean Briar, the CIA’s top dog that’s dispatched on a mission to the French capital, only to unearth a seedy conspiracy that stretches far above anything he could’ve imagined.
In his journey, Briar crosses paths with professional trickster Michael Mason – played by Richard Madden of Game of Thrones – eventually deciding to team up with the crook to form an unlikely team.

Idris Elba is flawless in “Luther” as the Detective Chief Inspector with a very dark side, and now the gritty British actor is playing an equally as badass former CIA agent in “Bastille Day.” Co-starring Richard Madden (Robb Stark from “Game of Thrones”) as a pickpocketing artist in Paris, the action movie sees the unlikely pair team up on antiterrorist mission in France. When Sean Briar (Elba) takes chase after Michael Mason (Madden) across a rooftop, he sets the tone of their relationship by telling him: “But you ran … innocent people don’t run.” Also Read: Idris Elba to Star...

It wasn’t too long ago that Idris Elba’s name was mentioned in the same breath as a certain James Bond, and today’s trailer for action-thriller Bastille Day has the British actor doing his best impression of a 00-agent.
He’s up against it, too, squaring off against former King of the North Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), who hails from the opposite side of the law as an American pickpocket. What Elba’s former CIA agent comes to realize, though, is that Madden’s lowly thief is just one pawn on a much larger, crime-ridden chess board.
A tried and tested formula, sure, but there’s fleeting signs of Elba and Madden’s budding chemistry included in today’s trailer, which really ought to elevate the drama above its genre contemporaries.
Here’s the official synopsis:

With the rumors that Daniel Craig might be out as James Bond, here's a nice opportunity for fan favorite replacement Idris Elba to show the people at Eon Productions that he has what it takes to step into the role. Elba stars in a new action thriller called Bastille Day, in which he plays a CIA operative who teams with an American pickpocket (Richard Madden, who played Robb Stark on Game of Thrones) in order to combat a conspiracy in the police force. It admittedly looks like a pretty typical action movie, but Elba is imminently watchable; he's in true badass mode here, so despite the generic nature of the plot, I can't deny that I'm intrigued.
Once intended for Taken director Pierre Morel, James Watkins (The Woman in Black) ended up directing. The film was originally going to open in the U.K. this month, but it's been delayed...

While America has Independence Day, the French celebrate Bastille Day 10 days later and this year they’ll have a film of the same title. Rather than depicting the Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789 — the basis of the French holiday — it’s a straight-up, modern-day action feature starring Idris Elba.
Coming from The Woman in Black director James Watkins, the film follows the Beasts of No Nation star as a CIA agent who helps a pickpocket (Richard Madden) uncover a larger conspiracy. Set for a release in the April in the U.K., Focus Features has yet to set a U.S. date but one can hopefully expect it by the end of the year. Also starring Charlotte Le Bon, Eriq Ebouaney and José Garcia, check out the trailer below.
