Cillian Murphy recently had some choice words for his film Red Eye (watch it Here), a Wes Craven-directed thriller that was released back in 2005. But he wasn’t entirely negative. So that got me thinking: Is Red Eye a good film? Or is it more in the so bad it’s good category? I personally saw Red Eye in theaters and have always had a soft spot for it. But if Oppenheimer‘s own Cillian Murphy has an issue with it, maybe it’s worth a second gander. So let’s see whether it’s good, bad, or somewhere in between as we revisit Red Eye in the video embedded above!
Scripted by Carl Ellsworth, who crafted the story with Dan Foos, Red Eye has the following synopsis: In the wake of her grandmother’s funeral, hotel manager Lisa Reisert is waiting to fly back home when she meets charming Jackson Rippner at check-in.

Searchlight Pictures’ vice president of national publicity Diana Loomis is leaving the studio after nearly two decades as head of its East Coast office.
Loomis will depart at the end of the summer after completing work on “Flamin’ Hot,” “Theater Camp” and “Poor Things” to launch a consulting operation specializing in theatrical and streaming releases, and awards campaigns for motion picture and streaming companies.
“I’ve had some amazing years at Searchlight with incredible, unique films — truly innovative filmmakers gravitate to this place,” Loomis said in statement on Wednesday. “I’m grateful to Nancy Utley, Steve Gilula, David Greenbaum, Matthew Greenfield, Michelle Hooper, Rebecca Kearey and, of course, our New York and Los Angeles publicity teams and looking forward to new experiences in the industry with new and old friends and colleagues.”
Loomis began her tenure at the studio — known then as Fox Searchlight Pictures — in 2006 with the release of “Little Miss Sunshine.

Magnolia Pictures announced today they’ve acquired worldwide distribution rights to “Joan Baez I Am a Noise,” an exploration of the famous 1960s folk singer. The film was presented at this year’s Berlinale as well as SXSW. Magnolia has plans to give it a full-scale theatrical release in October.
The documentary, directed by Miri Navasky, Maeve O’Boyle and Karen O’Connor is being touted less as a traditional documentary and more along the lines of Brett Morgen’s 2022 film on David Bowie, “Moonage Daydream.”
In the wake of Warner Bros. “Elvis” and Morgen’s “Moonage Daydream” last year, music docs continue to see an uptick in interest. However, the exploration of female singers remains lacking. Baez is a groundbreaking figure in the 1960s folk scene with a fascinating story. Magnolia has been especially interested in propelling original content forward, even pairing with NBC streamer Peacock back in April to stream their films.

Former Paramount Pictures duo John Goldwyn and Karen Rosenfelt are reuniting at Warner Bros. Television.
The feature executives-turned-independent producers have formed production company Goldwyn/Rosenfelt Productions and have entered into a first-look television deal with the studio overseen by Channing Dungey.
Under the multiple-year deal, Goldwyn and Rosenfelt will develop original scripted programming for the studio’s internal portfolio, including HBO Max, as well as outside streaming services, cable and broadcast networks.
In addition to exec producing Hulu’s Emmy-nominated limited series Dopesick, Goldwyn and Rosenfelt spent more than a decade together at Paramount Pictures, where the former served as president and then vice chairman of the studio’s motion picture group. During his tenure atop the studio, Goldwyn oversaw features including Saving Private Ryan, Titanic, Mission: Impossible and Forrest Gump, among countless others. Former CBS Films President and Dreamworks marketing head Terry Press and former Paramount Vice Chairman will be informal advisors to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, Deadline has confirmed. The news comes amid layoffs at Warner Bros Discovery hitting the programming operation overseen by HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys.
As the newly merged company re-gains its footing post AT&T, the duo will consult on myriad matters including marketing, however, we hear it’s not in a formal role like former Disney Chief Creative Officer and Warner Studio Vet Alan Horn.
Zaslav has been friends with Goldwyn going back to Discovery, and he was one of the guys he sat down with during his listening tour. Horn, meanwhile, is involved in strategic and operational consulting.
Essentially, Press and Goldwyn are there for Zas to bounce ideas off of.

With close to 365 days of flawless weather, outdoor dining is a year-round occurrence in Los Angeles, and even more so during a pandemic. And now that summer is officially here, there’s nothing like a lively patio, especially in the power-lunch centers of Beverly Hills and Century City, where the majority of talent agencies and entertainment law firms are perched.
Industry regulars say that patios throughout Century City and Beverly Hills are bustling these days. “As Beyoncé declares in her new single, ‘Break My Soul,’ we are ‘back outside’,” says Patrik-Ian Polk, co-executive producer of Starz’s P-Valley. “As convenient as Zoom meetings are, nothing beats the in-person L.A. business lunch circuit. It’s a vital part of the entertainment industry social scene that was sorely missed.” UTA partner Darnell Strom tells THR that he feels it’s harder to get a reservation “last second” right now in the area.

When consulting on the marketing and awards campaign for David Fincher’s The Social Network in late 2010, Terry Press needed to scope out the competition. She deftly arranged to see a screening of The King’s Speech at the Landmark Theatre on L.A.’s Westside. Heading toward the Oscars next Sunday, the BAFTAs mark the last of the Oscar precursor award shows, timed right when Oscar voters are filling out their ballots (due February 4). Behind the scenes, Oscar campaigners took full advantage by having their winners send messages to the Academy, both overt and subliminal. But it’s not all in their control.
While Netflix’s awards wranglers made sure that “The Irishman” producer Robert De Niro presented an award to Renée Zellweger, they could not control several jokes made at the lengthy movie’s expense by host Graham Norton, who suggested “there’s more than one ‘Irishman’ here tonight who seems to go on and on.”
The BAFTAs often presage Oscar winners, but not always. Last year, the BAFTAs favored “Roma” and “The Favourite” over “Green Book.” The complete BAFTA winners list from this year is here.

Newly knighted Sir Sam Mendes mixed with onscreen sovereigns (from “The Crown” and “Game of Thrones”) and Hollywood royalty at the 20th annual AFI Awards, presented Jan. 4 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Mendes was there representing “1917,” one of the 22 film and TV works saluted by the awards. Though the guest list was regal, the mood is always relaxed, since there are no TV cameras, no acceptance speeches, no pressure and no suspense: honorees were announced on Dec. 4.
Walt Disney Television’s Peter Rice schmoozed with Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, Billy Porter chatted with Kit Harington, and Laura Dern was deep in conversation with Pitt as other guests talked on subjects ranging from Iran to the accelerated Oscar schedule; all of them offered mutual congratulations for a year that was exception for both films and TV works.

Before Joe Biden entered the 2020 presidential race, Kamala Harris was the clear favorite of Hollywood’s big spenders. First-quarter Federal Election Commission filings show that through March 31, she led all rivals in contributions from industry movers and shakers.
That dynamic might have changed when Biden joined the race on April 25 – after the Fec’s latest reporting deadline. The former vice president reportedly raised more than $700,000 at a May 8 Hollywood fundraiser – money that hasn’t shown up yet in the latest Fec reports. The fundraiser was attended by such luminaries as DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, producer and executive Peter Chernin, actor-filmmaker Rob Reiner and CBS Films president Terry Press.
Pete Buttigieg, another Hollywood favorite, also entered the race late – on April 15, though he received numerous campaign contributions after he formed an exploratory committee on January 23. Buttigieg had been scheduled for a six-event fundraising trip to Los Angeles this week – including one...

In a now very crowded field of Democrats, Joe Biden’s third run for the White House has the deepest pocketed Hollywood donor to the ex-Vice President’s boss putting his money on the table.

Exclusive: CBS Films will become part of the CBS Entertainment Group, sources said. There will be some layoffs as a result, as the label focuses on streaming-centric content. This has been in the discussion stage for a while, a result of the shifting dynamics of the independent art house space, and trying to survive when you are not making tentpoles.

CBS Films will be folded into CBS Entertainment Group over the next 12 months, Variety has learned.
Before that change takes place, the company is committed to releasing its next four scheduled films in theaters. They include “Five Feet Apart,” “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” “Pavarotti,” and “Lexi.” Several of these movies are being distributed through the company’s partnership with Lionsgate.
After the last of these films debuts in cinemas, CBS Films’ mandate will shift towards finding content for the company’s streaming services. These platforms will likely include CBS All Access, the media conglomerate’s major entry into the streaming space, but details are still being worked out. CBS Films President Terry Press is expected to continue to lead the division. CBS Films’ name will continue on CBS Films releases.

CBS Films is in final negotiations to acquire the North American rights to Ron Howard’s “Pavarotti” documentary, the distributor announced Tuesday.
Mark Monroe wrote the film, while Nigel Sinclair, Brian Grazer, Howard, Michael Rosenberg and Jeanne Elfant Festa are serving as producers. David Blackman and Dickon Stainer are serving as executive producers.
“Luciano Pavarotti’s exuberant personality, astounding voice and charm earned him world acclaim in his lifetime. He upended the world of classical music and, most importantly, brought opera back to the people. It’s hard to believe ten years have passed since Luciano left the world; however, through the making of this film, we have been fortunate enough to rediscover Pavarotti’s magic and humanity,” Howard said. “I’m thrilled to bring that same power and emotion to audiences and screens around the world.”

Vincent Van Gogh died at 37; Willem Dafoe is 61. Despite that age gap, Dafoe portrays the seminal artist with a physical and spiritual power not unlike his transcendent portrayal of Jesus in “The Last Temptation of Christ.” It marks a career best, and could land him his second acting Oscar nomination in a row, after last year’s “The Florida Project.” (He was also nominated for supporting roles in “Platoon” and “Shadow of the Vampire.”)
“At Eternity’s Gate” director Julian Schnabel, who has been Dafoe’s friend for 30 years, dismissed the idea that the actor was too old for the role: He said Dafoe was in better shape now than Van Gogh was at his death.

Having grown up on the wonderfully horrific Alvin Schwartz book series, Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark, I'm extremely interested to see how this upcoming film adaptation turns out. The fact that Guillermo del Toro is involved with the development gives me hope that it will be as good as it should be.
Today Del Toro has confirmed that production on the film will start in a few days!

The story is said to follow "a group of young teens who must solve the mystery surrounding sudden and macabre deaths in their small town."
One thing that I really hope to see in this movie is those creepy-ass visuals from the book being brought to life. Those things gave me nightmares when I was growing up! It will be interesting...

Following Ronan Farrow’s New Yorker expose on Les Moonves that detailed the CBS Chairman and CEO’s alleged sexual misconduct over the years, a number of executives who’ve worked with him went on the record during the recent TCA tour to say myriad things from their inability to comment, to defending the CBS work climate to praising Moonves on his track record in television.
Tonight at the Television Academy Foundation and Netflix event, The Power of TV, former CBS Entertainment chairwoman Nina Tassler, who worked with Moonves for 18 years at the network, chose to stay completely mum about her former colleague.
Unlike the network executives who took the stage during TCA and promptly responded to the Moonves-cbs scandal in some form or fashion, Tassler didn’t mention anything about the network boss during the Latinx panel she was moderating. Following the session, Tassler was whisked out of the room by Academy ushers.

Facebook made its TCA debut in hopes of talking up Facebook Watch, but wound up swatting at questions about its distribution of conspiracy peddler InfoWars. Netflix and Amazon returned to the semi-annual TV confab after being Mia for two years.

CBS president Kelly Kahl addressed the sexual misconduct allegations against the network’s CEO and chairman Leslie Moonves at the Television Critics Association press tour Sunday.
“Obviously, this has been a tough week at CBS,” Kahl said (via Deadline). “I’ve had many female colleagues come to me this week who’ve been saddened by what they’ve read about our company. They said it does not represent their experience at CBS. I’m not saying we’re perfect — no large company is — and there’s always room for improvement.

Ronan Farrow’s recent New Yorker piece reporting several allegations of sexual harassment against CEO Leslie Moonves also investigated the larger culture at CBS, particularly given reports of inappropriate conduct at CBS News. But CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl told reporters on Sunday at the Television Critics Association press tour that this is not the case inside the company’s west coast programming unit.

Exclusive: With a long-scheduled CBS board meeting having just started, Leslie Moonves is “contemplating” stepping aside from his CEO perch for a while as investigations into allegations of misconduct by him and the culture at the network continue.
“It would be the right thing to do and a stabilizing move,” an insider also told Deadline this morning of the once nearly unthinkable possibility that Moonves could not be leading CBS. The option is one of several being floated for the board, the source says. In many circumstances, even for a figure as synonymous with his company as Moonves, such a temporary move as this by a corporate executive is standard procedure.
Though already on the calendar in anticipation of the August 2 quarterly earnings report and next week’s annual shareholder meeting, the meat of the approximately 9:30 Am Pt sit-down will now obviously be addressing the fallout of the New Yorker...

CBS Films chief Terry Press said she is struggling to reconcile her personal experiences working for Leslie Moonves with a portrait painted in a recent New Yorker article of the network head as a serial harasser of women.
“As is often the case, this kind of story generates as many questions as answers,” Press wrote on her personal Facebook page. “I do not believe that it is my place to question the accounts put forth by the women but I do find myself asking that if we are examining the industry as it existed decades before through the lens of 2018 should we also discuss a path to learning, reconciliation, and forgiveness?”
Moonves is fighting for his professional life after a story broke on Friday that included allegations from six different women. CBS’s board is meeting on Monday to discuss what actions should be taken — it has already launched an investigation into Moonves’ behavior.

CBS Films president Terry Press has posted a comment on her personal Facebook page about her longtime boss, Les Moonves. It is less unanimously supportive than the statements issued Friday by Moonves’ wife Julie Chen and female CBS executives Ad Sales chief Jo Ann Ross and head of daytime Angelica McDaniel. Press was outspoken last October in saying she would quit the Academy unless Harvey Weinstein was banished, so it became a natural to wonder how she would respond at charges leveled at her boss by six women who claimed he made aggressive sexual overtures and froze them out when they were rebuffed. Moonves is by far the most powerful media executive facing a precipitous fall due to charges made in print by women charging objectionable behavior from decades ago. This is a painful moment for female executives reeling from these charges landing close to home, as they try to...
