I'm so glad that Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight" is getting lots of love from the Independent Spirit Awards. It is raw, honest, pure! One of my favorite films of the year! I also enjoyed "Jackie" but largely due to Natalie Portman's wonderful performance. Oh, I'm also loving "Manchester by the Sea!" I interviewed the cast at the Toronto International Film Festival, check it out here. Affleck and Hedges received nominations from the film among its many accomplishments. And I love Ruth Negga from "Loving!" She's nominated for Best Female Lead. Check out my interview with the actress where I told her we'll all remember her name by year's end!

On March 7, World Wrestling Entertainment announced Big Boss Man as the newest inductee into the Hall of Fame class of 2016.
One of the best heavyweights of his or any generation, the double-tough Georgian had two stints with the company that produced tremendous results. As the former prison guard out of Cobb County, Georgia, he first established himself as a hated heel, determined to put Hulk Hogan down and out of professional wrestling.
Over time, though, he showed great respect and dignity, doing the right thing during a program involving Jake Roberts and Ted Dibiase and turning babyface in the process. It was in that role that he is most remembered, an upper midcard performer who mixed it up with main event talent on occasion but could always be trusted to carry any program handed down to him by management.

Over the years, professional wrestling has been heavily influenced by the world of horror. Dating back to the days of Bruiser Brody and Ox Baker, there has always been an element of madness and terror in the business, helping to create characters that have kept fans on their toes.
Some of the most iconic and enduring gimmicks of all-time were created with the intention to strike fear in the hearts of the audience. The Undertaker, Andre the Giant, Psycho Sid, Mankind, Jake Roberts, Kane…the list goes on and on.
However, this propensity for trying to craft innovative, fearsome gimmicks has also resulted in some of the most laughable characters and ridiculed moments the business has ever seen.
But, hey, coming up with new ways to scare people is tough (just ask Stephen King.) Sometimes you just have to take a trip to the local Halloween shop, blindfold yourself,...

To a new generation of fans, the name Jake Roberts has unfortunately become synonymous with words like drugs, alcohol, addiction, rehab and…erm, yoga.
All of this can be seen in the recently released “The Resurrection of Jake The Snake”, the critically acclaimed documentary that was released on iTunes last week after a well-received theatrical run. But, before all of Jake’s personal problems became public and threatened to define him, he was one of the greatest talents in the history of WWE.
And for a very short time, he was also one of the company’s most hated and despicable heels.
In just nine months, while performing as one the most vile and truly evil villains in wrestling history, Jake racked up one disturbing moment after another as he antagonized legends such as The Ultimate Warrior, “Macho Man” Randy Savage and The Undertaker. Yoga guru and former professional wrestling superstar Diamond Dallas Page returned for part two of his appearance on The Steve Austin Show, and this time it’s all about wrestling. The first installment from last week primarily featured discussion about Ddp’s yoga empire and tales from his personal life, and while intriguing in many aspects, most people tuning into Stone Cold’s show want to hear talk about wrestling, especially when interviewing a guy with a career as impressive as Page.
Austin calls Ddp one of his best friends and remarks several times throughout the podcast that he’s never even heard some of these stories before, and even for fans who’ve read his autobiography there’s some new information to be found.

The ‘American Dream’ Dusty Rhodes may have passed away, but it’s say to say the legendary grappler still lives long in the memory. Something Rhodes was well-known for was making an impact. Despite not having a look which immediately screamed, ‘wrestling superstar’, the man went on to become one of the most beloved names in pro wrestling history.
Latterly before his death, Dusty worked mainly at the WWE Performance Center. It was there that the ‘Dream’ worked with many young talents who would go on to be part of the Nxt roster. Some incredibly kind words aimed towards a fledgling WWE Diva are explored here.

Finishing moves have come a long way over the past few decades. Bruno Sammartino’s bearhug, Ultimate Warrior’s running splash and even Jake Roberts’ Ddt simply won’t cut it anymore. These match ending moves have evolved to become flashier, look more devastating, and often require an incredible amount of strength and athleticism to pull off.
It wasn’t that long ago that you didn’t even need a finishing move to get over. Now, it’s imperative. They are an integral part of the current professional wrestling scene, just like theme music. But who has the best one? It’s a tough call, but that’s what we’re here to find out.

A good finisher is vital to becoming a success in wrestling. Can you imagine Jake Roberts without the Ddt, or Shawn Michaels without Sweet Chin Music or Stone Cold without the stunner?
Having a good finisher gives you something to build towards and tease throughout a match, they can be used for storylines and have many, many other uses. But what makes a good finisher? Well, if you want to work on top, you better be able to use your finisher on everyone from The Big Show to Hornswoggle. The best finishers should be able to be hit on anyone. It should be impactful and relatively easy to execute.
It is also important that your finish can be used in various scenarios. Being able to hit your finish out of midair, off the top rope or as a counter to another move can make a match just that...

While the Sundance Film Festival is the better known film festival located in Utah that runs in January, it is not the only one, as the Slamdance Film Festival has been running in the same place during the same month for over 20 years. The unique aspect of the Slamdance Film Festival, however, is its Narrative Features and Documentary Features program, which restricts its selection to films that are directorial debuts, made for under $1 million, and don’t have Us distribution. The 2015 incarnation of the festival is set to run from January 23rd to the 29th, and ahead of the festival’s premiere next month, organisers have unveiled the lineup for the aforementioned categories. The lineup is as follows.
Narrative Features Program:
Across The Sea (Turkey/USA), making its North American Premiere
Written and Directed by Nisan Dağ and Esra Saydam
Starring Damla Sönmez, Jacob Fishel, Ahmet Rıfat Şungar, Hakan Karsak,...

The 11 narrative and eight documentary selections include 13 world premieres. All competition films are feature directorial debuts budgeted below $1m without Us distribution.
“It’s very exciting to bring this dynamic lineup to audiences in Park City,” said festival director Anna Germanidi. “We are proud to help launch these filmmakers’ careers and celebrate the success we all believe these films deserve.”
“Our success in showcasing emerging artists is most obviously linked with American talent, but increasingly at Slamdance, we want to also support new international talent,” said co-founder and president Peter Baxter.

The Sundance Film Festival dominates Park City in late January, but there is also the upstart Slamdance Film Festival. We’ve not really highlighted that fest or its program, but I always stay at Treasure Mountain Inn where Slamdance is headquartered and they’ve kind of grown on me. Last year they brought Christopher Nolan to speak (the fest had the good sense to program his first film) and Joe Mangianello came to vamp his male stripper docu. This year, there’s every chance of seeing Dennis Rodman, the flamboyant former rebounding machine and Bff of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, for the docu Dennis Rodman’s Big Bang In Pyongyang. So let’s all root for an international incident! Here are the films they’ll be playing from January 23-29:

News and updates have continue to pour in over the past week or so in regard to Jake “The Snake” Roberts and his ongoing health issues. Jake had a bit of a scare following a routine flight to Las Vegas, Nevada. During the flight, Roberts began to experience shortness of breath and tightening in his chest. He was subsequently rushed to a Las Vegas area hospital, where he was diagnosed with double pneumonia which had led to fluid buildup in his lungs.
Following treatment and rest — and even being placed on a ventilator for a few days — things seemed to pick up for ole Jake “The Snake.” Roberts was removed from the Intensive Care Unit a few days ago, and has since left the hospital. Reportedly, he is staying with Sinn Bodhi in Las Vegas, until he is cleared to fly back to his home in Atlanta, Georgia.

News continues to pour in regarding Jake “The Snake” Roberts and his recent health issues. Luckily, most of the latest reports have been relatively good and note Jake’s improvements. Further reports have now come in that Roberts’ health continues to be on the up-and-up and he may be leaving the hospital soon.
It was initially reported earlier in the week that Jake had been placed on a ventilator, as he was having some trouble breathing due to his double pneumonia. However, Roberts improved very quickly and has since been taken off of the device. Furthermore, it’s being said that Roberts will be moved out of the Intensive Care Unit soon, and will simply stay at the hospital so doctors can continue to observe him and his condition.
According to Sinn Bodhi — formerly known as Kizarny in WWE — Jake could be out of the hospital entirely in just a few days’ time.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts has been in the minds of wrestling fans the world over after news broke that he was rushed to a Las Vegas hospital. As previously discussed, Jake was flying to Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday, August 24th. The recent Hall of Fame inductee was set to compete at Sinn Bodhi’s Freakshow Wrestling event in the infamous Sin City. Unfortunately, Roberts began to experience difficulty breathing and tightening in his chest. An ambulance, which was waiting for the legendary wrestler when the plane landed, rushed Jake to a nearby hospital.
Since then, Jake has been transferred to another facility, following his double pneumonia diagnosis. Initially, there were reports of a mass being found on the superstar’s brain as well, but no further information about that has come in since. Jake “The Snake” Roberts has had a tough past wherein he often struggled with drug abuse problems. However, in the past few years, Jake Roberts has worked hard to overcome these struggles. He was able to get clean and sober, thanks in large part to “Diamond” Dallas Page and his Ddp Yoga. Beyond ridding himself of his addictions, Jake has also lost a substantial amount of weight and just generally seemed to be in better health.
Shocking news, however, has come out that Jake Roberts has been hospitalized. It seems that, on Wednesday, the recent Hall of Fame inductee was flying to Las Vegas, Nevada — where he was to perform at a show this weekend — and passed out on the plane. The Undertaker character is the stuff of legend in WWE, a twenty year veteran who has left a legacy of some of the greatest wrestling matches of all times.
He’s also proved to be a legend ‘behind the scenes’ too. Undertaker is the resident WWE locker room leader, a union figure of sorts who functions as the bridge between Vince McMahon and the wrestling crew. Whenever you hear former talent talk about the WWE, they always reference The Undertaker in tones of respect and appreciation.
Not to say he was always a good guy by any means… he was one of the key men in the backstage ‘wrestler court’ which hazed newer talent and dished out ‘punishment’ to those who betrayed the code of the locker room. The Ultimate Warrior has signed a new multi-year WWE deal, revealing at the Hall Of Fame that he is now working as an official ambassador for the company.
This likely means he has a agreed to a WWE legends contract and will now do sporadic appearances on the company’s behalf. Expect that to involve some Raw dates and PPV pre-show appearances too. Seeing Warrior on the microphone in a Raw ring would certainly be a compelling sight.
One thing this new deal won’t entail is a return to actual in-ring wrestling for the Warrior. When he received ‘One more match’ chants during his Hall of fame speech, he was quick to shoot the idea down. He mentioned that as an athlete you have to know when your time is up.
The rest of Warrior’s much anticipated induction speech and the Hall of fame in general passed without much incident.

I’ve heard it said that somewhere between science and superstition, there is another world. A world of darkness.
It’s a world that haunted my dreams as a child, from the first time I saw Kevin Sullivan and his Army of Darkness spreading their eerily twisted messages across the Nwa.
“Our cause is not for evil,” said Sullivan during an interview for Championship Wrestling from Florida in 1982. “Because all we’re looking for is refuge from this cold, cruel world.”
Ring a bell?
Sullivan’s dark mystique, his messianic charisma, his penchant for dark riddles — they all seem to have been resurrected in the form of Bray Wyatt.
Take, for instance, these words recently delivered by the leader of the Wyatt Family to nemesis John Cena:
“This is a terrible world,” Wyatt drawled. “A cold, cold dark and lonely place. You stand for these illusions. But...

Before the Attitude Era, the hardcore revolution, or even Rock N’ Wrestling, there were…all of these things. You just had to know where to look.
World Class Championship Wrestling was owned by Jack Adkisson, a. k. a. Fritz Von Erich. The Dallas, Texas promotion is most famous for introducing Fritz’s sons to wrestling fans, especially their long-running feud with Georgia’s Fabulous Freebirds. It was also responsible for bolstering the careers of established wrestlers like the Junk Yard Dog, Jake Roberts and Rick Rude, before they were snatched up by Vince McMahon. Wccw was a part of the National Wrestling Alliance, which meant its wrestlers would frequently face the likes of Harley Race and Ric Flair.
Wccw’s technical innovations, appeal to untapped markets, and emphasis on realism made it a worldwide sensation in the mid-eighties, out-performing even the mighty WWF in many markets, including New York. The...

Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts is to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this April 5th.
The announcement was made official during Monday Night Raw, with a video package illustrating some of the notable Roberts moments from the 80′s and 90′s. The former star of WWF and WCW television will be the second inductee, behind former WWF Champion The Ultimate Warrior. The ceremony will take place the night before Wrestlemania 30 in New Orleans.
Here’s the video package from Raw last night which announced his induction;
Roberts has long been tipped as a potential WWE Hall of Famer, the memorable character being a staple in WWF programming for key periods in the 80s and 90s. Despite a combined run of only 7 years with Vince McMahon, few fans will ever forget the image of Jake laying out his Ddt on opponents (or for that matter laying out his snake Damien...

When the bell rang to signify the end of the main event on Old School Raw this week, one could have assumed that the show was over. It was a big enough moment as it was, with Roman Reigns being the sole member of The Shield to get a victory over “Best In The World” Cm Punk. It was yet another chapter in the story of The Shield’s deterioration, this revelation that Rollins and Ambrose might be inferior to Reigns. Instead of that being enough, or it leading to a faceoff amongst the hounds of justice, someone else’s music hit.
The music was so familiar to me, as a person who started watching WWF in the 80′s. But WWE had modernized the music a little, and it was so unexpected, that I didn’t clue in to what was happening until he came out. Jake “The Snake” Roberts.

For every WWE champion, Intercontinental Champion or Tag Team Champion there are a ton of guys who never made the grade for a multitude of reasons. Most of these because they weren’t popular enough, good enough or just weren’t what the company needed at the time. On many occasions fans argue over who the greatest wrestlers were that never won any championship in WWE despite being incredibly deserving and so, to that argument, I submit the following list.
It is in no particular order and I am happy to leave it to the reader to decide who amongst the 10 was most deserving and who was least, enjoy.
10. Jake Roberts
Debuting in 1986 as a heel, Roberts was a huge babyface star by the close of 1987 and it is a source of considerable bemusement as to why he never won gold during his initial six year run with the company.
