"Who is Matilda Wormwood if not Carrie White without religious trauma?" This is a joke I made when interviewing "Abigail" directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett for the /Film Daily podcast after complimenting them on their decision to cast Netflix's "Matilda the Musical" star Alisha Weir as their titular ballerina vampire. "Matilda" is one of author Roald Dahl's most beloved characters, offering children both the fantastical wish-fulfillment of having telekinetic superpowers, as well as the ever-important message that reading is cool. The 1988 novel has been adapted multiple times across various media, most notably the 1996 feature film directed by Danny DeVito and starring Mara Wilson, the two-part BBC Radio 4 special, the stage musical featuring music by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly, and the Netflix film adaptation of said musical.

Endeavor chief Ari Emanuel received a roughly $84 million pay package last year — between his base salary, bonus, stock awards and other compensation — the company disclosed in its proxy filing on Thursday.
President Mark Shapiro received $38.8 million, by those same measures, in 2023, while executive chairman Patrick Whitesell saw $13.2 million in pay, the filing disclosed.
The Endeavor pay for Emanuel and Shapiro include their paydays at Tko Group Holdings, the owners of WWE and UFC, where Emanuel’s compensation package was valued at nearly $65 million last year.
After a three-year run as a public company, Endeavor is set to go private in a reversal for Silver Lake and the executives running the company. But Emanuel, Whitesell and Shapiro will all be the beneficiaries of some generous deal-related bonuses.
For starters, they are incentivized to be sellers. While a source says that no major asset sales are imminent and there is no rush to sell anything off,...

Ari Emanuel, CEO of Tko Group as well as the soon-to-be-private Endeavor, saw a pay package valued at $64.9 million in 2023 as CE0 of Tko Group, the home of WWE and UFC. Tko is a relatively new company that started trading on the New York Stock Exchange last September.
Emanuel’s compensation included a $911k base salary, a cash bonus of $24 million, and stock awards valued at $40 million.
Tko chief operating officer Mark Shapiro’s package totaled $16 million for last year, according to Tko’s proxy statement filed with the SEC last year. Shapiro holds the same role at Endeavor.
The compensation committee noted revenue, adjusted ebitda gains, cost reduction, strong turnout for UFC and WWE live events, and a set of media rights deals for WWE, including a long-term deal with Netflix. “The effective leadership of our named executive officers was critical to our success in achieving these financial results and strategic activity milestones and,...

More of former Tko Group Executive Chairman Vince McMahon’s large stake in the company is changing hands, with Endeavor and Tko agreeing to buy a combined $311.2 million of his stock.
In an SEC filing, Endeavor Group said it would buy shares worth about $146.2 million. Tko Group Holdings, which Endeavor controls, will buy another $165 million in stock.
The moves follow recent comments about McMahon’s Tko position by Mark Shapiro, who is president and COO of Tko and Endeavor. On Tko’s quarterly earnings call in February with Wall Street analysts, he said the company was “on the sideline” waiting to see if McMahon would be shedding any more of his holdings. He noted that McMahon at that time still owned about 20 million shares in Tko even after selling more than 8 million last November for more than $700 million.

The Republican Study Committee released a budget proposal that calls for raising the Social Security retirement age to 69 years old and slashing funding for Medicare.
The RSC is chaired by Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Oklahoma), and its members consist of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and three top leadership deputies. Johnson chaired this group from 2019 to 2021.
The proposals, unlikely to become law this year because of opposition from Democrats who control the Senate and White House, indicate how many Republicans will hope to govern if they win the 2024 elections.
They also play into an argument that President Joe Biden wants to use against Donald Trump and Republicans while running for reelection.
The budget was released by the RSC, a group of over 170 House GOP lawmakers, including many of Trump’s allies. The RSC proposal noted that Biden supported raising the age to 65 to 67, the current retirement age while he was a senator in the 1980s.

Conservative firebrand Candace Owens has left the news outlet The Daily Wire after a war of words with the founder of the news brand, fellow far-right figure Ben Shapiro, which began shortly after the outset of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
Owens joined the partisan conservative news website, which gained traction during former President Donald Trump’s time in the White House, in 2020 and hosted a weekday commentary show for the brand, known for repackaging other news outlets’ reporting with a right-wing spin. The 34-year-old confirmed the news on Friday on X, the platform where most of the drama between the two conservative media figures played out.
“The rumors are true — I am finally free. If you would like to support my work, you can head to http://CandaceOwens.com where you will be directed to my locals page,” Owens tweeted, then solicited for funds on another personal website.

On the second season of Max’s real estate reality show Selling the Hamptons, bad-boy agent and new castmember Dylan Eckardt reveals to the cameras regarding his castmates: “I barely like them at all.”

Playing the ferocious Emperor Shaddam IV in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, Christopher Walken simply stole the show with his brief appearances. According to reports, being a huge fan of the first installment, Walken took on the role of the emperor in the sequel. However, this isn’t the first time the actor has tried for a big-budget sci-fi film.

Previously, Christopher Walken noted how he was up for the Han Solo part in the first Star Wars film. The actor’s comments confirmed that Carrie Fisher wasn’t the first choice for Star Wars.

Ari Aster has assembled an all-star cast for his next film, “Eddington,” recruiting Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr.
A24 is financing and producing the movie, which — based on Aster’s track record — we can only assume will give us nightmares. Plot details are kept under wraps besides the fact that the film “follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.”
“Eddington” starts production this week, with Aster writing, directing and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji is the director of photography.
“Eddington” marks the sixth collaboration between Square Peg and A24, which produced and distributed Aster’s previous three films — “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” — as well as “Dream Scenario” and the upcoming “Death of a Unicorn.”

Updated with more details: Neve Campbell said Tuesday that she will return as Sidney Prescott for the next film in the Scream franchise.
In an Instagram post today, Campbell said she’s been asked back and is happy to return to the pic, which for now is known only as Untitled Scream 7 and will be directed by original Scream writer Kevin Williamson from a script penned by Guy Busick.
Campbell, an original Scream star, did not appear in last year’s sixth movie of the franchise because of a pay dispute. Her most recent appearance in the series was 2022’s Scream, which served as a franchise reboot. She had signaled as recently as January that she wouldn’t rule out returning to the role for the right price.
“It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the Scream movies,” Campbell wrote today.

At the 2024 Oscars on Sunday, John Cena took the stage — seemingly in his birthday suit, save for a winner’s envelope, a Rolex Explorer and some Birkenstocks — to present the award for best costume design. But the wrestler turned actor was actually wearing an item called a modesty garment, often used in film and television to cover an actor’s intimate areas.
After donning the flesh-colored sling as part of a skit that nodded to streaker Robert Opel at the 1974 Academy Awards, Cena was given a curtain-toga to cover up during costume designer Holly Waddington’s acceptance speech for Poor Things.
While the bit about a popular actor’s bits got its share of laughs, the question remains: What is a modesty garment, or modesty pouch, anyway?
Jessica Steinrock, one of the leading intimacy coordinators in Hollywood and CEO of Intimacy Directors and Coordinators, Inc., tells The Hollywood Reporter that there are usually two kinds.

One hundred years ago, in August 1923, the Green Bay Packers football club was formed in a public stock sale.
The Packers sold 1,000 shares at $5 apiece, raising $5,000 (about $90,000 today, adjusted for inflation). The team has held five stock sales since then, in 1935, 1950, 1997, 2011 and 2021, but despite raising tens of millions of dollars, the Packers’ unusual structure has a big asterisk: The team is a publicly owned nonprofit corporation, and the stock? It cannot be resold, traded or returned to the team.
While the Packers paved the way for the public to own a piece of a sports team (even if there isn’t much they can do with that ownership), in recent decades sports has mostly remained an investment for the ultrarich. With most major sports teams now worth billions of dollars, very few entire leagues for sale, and the value of media rights deals exploding, there is big money at stake.

For decades, sports on television was a bulletproof business. Live games, airing on local stations or national networks, reliably brought in big audiences and even bigger advertising hauls.
Inside of just a few years, though, nearly everything about the way TV makes money from sports has begun to change as the industry’s transition to streaming upends the marketplace. Into this volatile mix, Endeavor has drop-kicked a newly created sports entity that is built for the future of both television and fandom. As of Sept. 12, that new entity has started trading on the NYSE under the feisty ticker symbol Tko.
“We sit at the epicenter of large and fast-growing markets,” Endeavor president Mark Shapiro promises. “We live in the world of the super fan.”

Walt Disney’s new carriage agreement with cable giant Charter Communications is widely seen as a game-changer for the pay TV and streaming sectors, creating a new blueprint for how such deals are structured. Analysts and industry sources point to two key pieces of the deal that will likely be felt: ad-supported streaming in the bundle, and a “resizing” of the linear TV business. It’s a deal that NBCUniversal (which owns Peacock), Paramount (which owns Paramount+) and Warner Bros. Discovery (which owns Max) are surely looking at closely given it is widely expected to impact their future carriage deals.

Paul McCartney wrote many hit songs for The Beatles but also penned tunes that he intended to give out to other artists. These occasionally made their way onto Beatles records, even if McCartney and John Lennon wrote them with other musicians in mind. One such song was “Misery,” a ballad intended for musician Helen Shapiro. McCartney shared why writing the song was hacky of them.
Paul McCartney said a song he wrote with John Lennon was a hack job
Early in their years as a band, McCartney and Lennon wrote together and wanted to do whatever they could to get their songs play time. This included writing songs for other artists. The Beatles were touring with Shapiro, and they felt she could boost their career by singing a song they wrote. So, they penned “Misery” with her in mind.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie is currently lavishing in critical praise, an A CinemaScore and the best opening box office of the year, but that won’t save it from the culture wars.
Inspired by the iconic children’s doll, the Warner Bros. family film has become a target for conservative outrage in recent weeks. That includes pundit Ben Shapiro, who took the discourse to theatrical new heights by burning Barbie dolls on camera in a 43-minute reaction video, posted to YouTube on Saturday.
After setting fire to the toys, Shapiro also called “Barbie,” which currently holds a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences alike, “drek” and “dog’s vomit,” dubbing it one of his bottom 10 movies of all time.
It didn’t take long for the internet to turn the flames back on Shapiro, starting with the YouTube comments for the video itself.

Documentary film editors are like crash test dummies, according to Alexis Johnson. You keep letting yourself crash, assuming the seatbelts will work, over and over again just to see what impact a scene is having on you.
“If I am going to harness a feeling, I have to feel it myself,” she said, recalling working on director Alex Gibney’s powerful 2021 documentary “The Forever Prisoner,” about the CIA’s interrogation treatment of prisoner Abu Zubaydah. In addition to the countless hours reworking scenes of waterboarding and other harsh treatments, Johnson edited a sequence that depicts the technique of playing high-decibel music to terrorize a prisoner. It was particularly grueling, as Johnson repeatedly subjected herself to the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ cacophonous “Give It Away” for hours while shaping the depiction of Zubaydah being tortured by the same song.

Endeavor Group Holdings CEO Ari Emanuel, whose bonus-laden $308 million pay package turned heads in 2021, made $19.1 million in 2022, according to the company’s latest proxy filing.
The exec took home $4 million in salary, $8.2 million in the form of a bonus and $6 million in non-equity incentive compensation, the filing said.
Emanuel’s tally narrowly eclipsed that of CFO Jason Lublin, President and COO Mark Shapiro, with Lublin collecting $18.5 million and Shapiro $18.7 million.
Executive Chairman Patrick Whitesell, whose 2021 package reached $123.1 million, took home $12.2 million last year.
After calling off a planned IPO at the 11th hour in 2019, Endeavor finally went public in April 2021, at the same time it gained full ownership of the UFC. The long-anticipated offering brought significant paydays in the form of stock grants for the entire senior management team, skewing comparisons with 2022. The parent company of agencies WME and Img has branched out well beyond its roots in representation and...

Over Wrestlemania weekend, it wasn’t just titles that changed hands. Reports have come out now that Ari Emanuel’s Endeavor, which owns UFC, is purchasing WWE and merging it with the mixed martial arts company. The deal, worth a reported $21 billion, will give the WWE alone a value of more than $9 billion.
A statement accompanying the announcement read, “Together, UFC and WWE will have global reach, impressive scale and omnichannel distribution…On a combined 2022 fiscal year-end basis, UFC and WWE achieved revenue of $2.4 billion and a 10 percent annual revenue growth rate since 2019.”
This Endeavor, uh, endeavor, doesn’t just merge WWE with UFC, but sets up an entirely new company. However, Endeavor will own 51% of the company, while WWE shareholders would have the remaining 49%, thus possibly posing serious threats as to where the wrestling company goes from here. Reilly Opelka was not a fan of Netflix's tennis show Break Point thinking it was boring and he is not changing his mind.
The American voiced his dislike for the show a few times on social media, especially after it was renewed for a second season. Break Point was released earlier this year featuring moments from the first half of the 2022 season and the American wasn't captivated from the start. His stance was questioned by Craig Shapiro on his podcast but Opelka didn't budge.
I mean you look at the few sports that have done Netflix series now F1, golf, tennis. Tennis finished third by a mile. It’s not a crazy radical thought that that was a boring show. I thought from the first episode I thought it was horrible.
Opelka's main problem with the show, which will continue with the second season, is that it was very basic lacking any real substance.

"Evil Dead" is one of the most recognizable and straightforward titles in horror, conjuring up images of the sort of demonic reanimated corpses that do, indeed, fit the descriptor. There's nothing that quite blatantly advertises itself as a horror movie like smashing these two words together. However, director Sam Raimi wasn't initially fond of the title, and the only reason he relented and accepted the name was, like almost everything else in that original film, due to budgetary restraints.
There are few films that capture the same raw, DIY ethos of "The Evil Dead". Raimi filmed a short film called "Within the Woods" in 1978 with the hopes of raising money to turn his project into a feature-length film. With the help of producers and friends Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell, the latter of who also starred in "The Evil Dead," Raimi scraped up enough cash to make a movie. The...

When director Sam Raimi was creating the now-iconic horror film The Evil Dead in 1981, he had no idea how huge the franchise would grow to be — in fact, he didn’t even know the franchise would be called Evil Dead. As he revealed to Empire this week, film sales agent Irvin Shapiro came up with the title, and, at first, Raimi hated it.
“The original title of the [original] movie was The Book of the Dead,” Raimi said. “But Shapiro sat Rob [Tapert], Bruce [Campbell], and I down and said: ‘We’re changing the title, boys. Advertising space in the newspaper is paid for by the inch, kid. We’re not going to have a five-word title. “Dead” can stay. You can have one other word. You can call it 101% Dead or Evil Dead.’”
Faced with those two options, Raimi went with what seemed like, well, the lesser of two evils. “’101% Dead?’ I thought,...

Ben Shapiro has offered another unfavourable film review, setting himself up, once again, for mockery over his failed screenwriting career.
The 39-year-old conservative pundit has been ridiculed numerous times for his divisive takes on popular film and television.
Now, Shapiro has found himself at the centre of fresh new Twitter scorn after he took aim at this year’s Best Picture Oscar winner, Everything Everywhere All at Once.

He claimed that “nobody has watched a single best picture winner five years later since 2007s No Country For Old Men”.
Numerous people have responded to his controversial opinion, with one writing that “everything about Ben Shapiro starts to make sense when you find out he failed as a screenwriter”.

Rainn Wilson wants to have the last word on religion in HBO’s “The Last of Us.”
The “Office” alum called out last Sunday’s episode of the record-breaking HBO series, which aired simultaneously during the 2023 Oscars March 12. The episode shows a group of cannibals led by what appears to be a Christian preacher; the group quotes Bible verses to defend their actions, with the preacher David also shown trying to assault lead character Ellie (Bella Ramsey).
“I do think there is an anti-Christian bias in Hollywood,” Wilson tweeted. “As soon as the David character in ‘The Last of Us’ started reading from the Bible I knew that he was going to be a horrific villain. Could there be a Bible-reading preacher on a show who is actually loving and kind?”
Wilson is not advancing some right-wing agenda. Far from it. He’s pointing out divisiveness, whether from the left or the right.
