The writers and actors strikes in Hollywood, and the related issues of AI and the disruption of business models brought on by global streaming platforms, have dominated industry discussions this year, overshadowing debates over gender equity, diversity and inclusion. But the progress in those areas continues, noted by groups like the 50:50 Equality Project, a BBC initiative to boost onscreen representation that was started in 2017 and now counts some 150 partner organizations in nearly 30 countries. In its latest impact report, published Aug. 18, the Equality Project showed that nearly half (47 percent) of all participating organizations had hit the target of 50 percent female contributors, and more than three quarters (77 percent) featured at least 40 percent female contributions.
Worldwide progress at the executive level has been slower, but as The Hollywood Reporter’s list of the most powerful women in international television illustrates, female executives are established in the C-suites of many of the world’s most influential media companies.

Idris Elba is adding “marketing guru” to his long list of side gigs.
The “Luther” star is launching Silly Face, a marketing and content business based in London meant to help brands navigate today’s challenging climate and improve upon diverse representation in advertising. The name, he told The Financial Times Thursday, is inspired by his hope to bring back a sense of fun to the space.
Elba cofound the company with Marc Boyan, who owns the independent British media group Miroma. The partnership was born after the two initially considered offering a bid to acquire the British public broadcast station Channel 4, but the government decided not to sell it in January.
In addition to his acting career, Elba is also a DJ (performing as DJ Big Driis or Idris) and singer. He also produces original content through Green Door Pictures, including the AppleTV+ series “Hijack.”

Chris Hemsworth is getting ready to celebrate his 40th birthday this summer, but he’s not even close to slowing down!
When the actor and his “Extraction 2” director, Sam Hargrave, sat down with Et’s Rachel Smith to promote their thrilling Netflix sequel this week, Hemsworth was quick to clarify comments that got “sort of blown out of proportion” about him taking a step back from acting.
Last fall, the “Thor” star told Vanity Fair that he planned to take some time off after promoting his unscripted Disney+ adventure series, “Limitless”. The decision, he said at the time, coincided with an episode of the show on death, as well as one in which Hemsworth agreed to take a genetic test, which ultimately revealed that his risk of developing Alzheimer’s is eight to 10 times higher than that of the general population — due to the fact that Hemsworth has two...

The film, which will be completed in September, is an adult comedy about Bull: an average dog who discovers he’s going to be neutered in the morning. As the gravity of this life-altering event sets in, Bull realizes he needs one last adventure with his pack of best friends as these are the last 24 hours with his balls.
New Line Cinema and Sony Pictures Animation are on board.
“Some people might get uncomfortable,” Tartakovsky told Variety.
“In 2010, when I pitched it to Sony, we still needed a concept. Then, lightning struck. Right in that room, within five seconds, I went: ‘They find out one of their friends will get neutered!’ Everyone laughed and that was it,...

Tom Hanks is backing Idris Elba to be the next James Bond. The 66-year-old actor is unequivocal in his verdict that the 'Luther' star should be granted 007's "licence to kill" and succeed Daniel Craig as the legendary spy.Hanks told the BBC: "Understand this. James Bond has a licence to kill. I would issue that licence to Idris Elba just based on the work that I've seen him do."Idris appeared to definitively rule himself out as the next Bond earlier this year by explaining that he prefers to play the unorthodox detective John Luther.Speaking earlier this year, he said: "You know, a lot of people talk about another character that begins with 'J' and ends with 'B', but I'm not going to be that guy. I'm going to be John Luther. That's who I am."Hanks has written his first novel, 'The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece',...
