Lisandro Alonso’s heady, intoxicating Eureka opens on a pristine beach where a Native American musician sings toward the sun. None of what he says is subtitled, though it’s apparent that his personal history, as well as that of his people, colors every word. When his chant concludes, the man walks slowly inland in one of the protracted transitional sequences in which Alonso specializes. Of all the practitioners of so-called “slow cinema,” the Argentine filmmaker excels at making even the most anti-dramatic actions riveting.
Eventually, the Native singer comes to an overlook where he spots a wagon in the distance. In the back of the vehicle sits a grizzled gunslinger named Murphy (Viggo Mortensen). Up to this point, Eureka has the feel of an ethnographic documentary. But with the arrival of a bona fide movie star, the ambience shifts toward the thorny fantasyland of the American western.

Siuntio (Finland), June 30 (Ians) A week after winning her second Ladies European Tour title, it was not the best of starts for India’s Diksha Dagar even as her fellow Indians had decent starts at the Ladies Open by Pickala Rock Resort, here. It was a day hindered by not one, but two storm delays and it took a toll on many of the players.
Diksha, who had 13 birdies and an eagle last week had no birdies in her round of 74 and will need a solid second round to make the cut.
Among other Indians, Pranavi Urs playing on a sponsor’s exemption shot even par 72 and was T-55 as was Vani Kapoor. Amandeep Drall and Ridhima Dilawari (73) were T-78th while Tvesa Malik and Diksha with 74 each were T-90. But with the scoreboard rather tight, a good round could see the Indians make the cut.

Late into Lisandro Alonso’s Jauja, Viggo Mortensen’s Captain Gunnar Dinesen disappeared into a cave. What happened next, in that unnamed stretch of 19th-century Patagonia, was nothing short of otherworldly. Gunnar’s encounter down the grotto was Jauja’s climax, and it stood as a kind of revelation for film and filmmaker both. The narrative trap door stripped Jauja of its western trappings and lifted the Danish soldier’s search for his daughter across the pampa into the realm of myth before an ellipsis shuttled one across time and space and it all became something else entirely. It also moved Alonso away from the observational, minimalist style of his earlier features toward a more expansive, enigmatic, magical register. More than anything, perhaps, that baffling rupture suggested liberation: it was the sort of moment his previous work––with their intimations of spiritual mysteries and numinous references––had long courted; here it finally detonated,...

By the brazenly esoteric standards of Argentine director Lisandro Alonso, his last feature “Jauja” was virtually a concession to the mainstream. A lushly shot 19th-century historical drama led by Viggo Mortensen, it was — until a typically disorienting coda — close to linear in its colonialist-quest narrative, even as it moved in slow, ever-widening circles, and duly became Alonso’s most widely released film to date. Nine years later (the longest gap yet in a career taken at his own pace), Alonso’s follow-up “Eureka” playfully appears to mock whatever tentative gestures “Jauja” made toward accessibility: A glisteningly opaque meditation on Indigenous living that refracts viewers’ interpretations as it repeatedly switches gear, focus, locus and story, it’s a film built to frustrate those who don’t succumb to its oneiric spell, not that it especially imparts its secrets to those who do.

Laz Alonso, Justin H. Min, Moon Bloodgood also star in Kinogo Pictures feature.
Sublimity Entertainment has acquired worldwide sales rights to the crime thriller Detained starring Abbie Cornish and Laz Alonso and will introduce the project to buyers in Cannes.

Like all fun, dumb, egregiously unverified celebrity rumors these days, it came from Deux Moi: Taylor Swift, fresh off her breakup with Joe Alwyn, was allegedly racing back to the dating world with… Formula 1 driver and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso.
That was back in mid-April, and there’s been no news since to confirm (or, technically, deny) the rumors, but you better believe the gossip has engendered a ton of content. Alonso himself has been leaning heavily into the bit, and it even spilled over into coverage...

Sky Sports Formula One commentators David Croft and Karun Chandhok couldn’t resist poking fun at Fernando Alonso amid those Taylor Swift romance rumours.
Swift has been romantically linked to the two-time F1 world champion after it was revealed last month that she’d split from Joe Alwyn. Alonso has also broken up with Andrea Schlager.
Despite the pair not confirming anything, the Spanish racing driver did share a cheeky TikTok clip of himself lifting weights to the tune of Swift’s “22” over the weekend, winking at the camera.
He captioned the post, “Im lifting 22’s #F1 #F1TikTok #Formula1 #f1edit.”

The 2023 Cannes Film Festival, taking place May 16 — 27, has added an array of new titles to its already eagerly anticipated Official Selection: Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s “Black Flies” starring Sean Penn and in competition; Catherine Corsini’s “Le Retour,” upping the lineup’s record total of seven female directors in competition; Amat Escalante’s Mexican drama “Perdidos en la Noche”; and Lisandro Alonso’s thriller “Eureka,” starring Viggo Mortensen and José María Yazpik.
Alonso and Mortensen previously collaborated on 2014’s “Jauja,” which premiered in the festival’s Un Certain Regard and won its top honor, the Fipresci Prize. “Perdidos en la Noche” and “Eureka” will play in the non-competitive Cannes Premiere section.
Additional titles added on Monday include an Out of Competition screening of Frédéric Tellier’s “L’Abbé Pierre – Une Vie de Combats”; Un Certain Regard titles “Only the River Flows” from Wei Shujun and “Une Nuit” from Alex Lutz; Special...

The Cannes Film Festival on Monday announced a raft of new additions to the Official Selection of its 76th edition running May 16-27.
Two new films have been added to the Competition lineup: Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s Black Flies and Catherine Corsini’s Le Retour.
Sauvaire’s thriller stars Tye Sheridan opposite Sean Penn as a rookie paramedic paired with a veteran on a drive through New York.
According to local media reports, Corsini’s mother-and-daughters drama Le Retour was to have been announced as the seventh female-directed film in Competition during the main line-up press conference on April 13.
Allegations of inappropriate behaviour on the Corsica-based set – detailed in reports by French newspapers Le Parisien and Libération – forced the festival to put its selection on hold, while it looked into the matter.
Cannes Delegate General Thierry Frémaux is reported to have said that he would not be swayed by rumors.

Disney has settled with producer Victoria Alonso, who claimed she was fired after “refusing” to make a “reprehensible” Ant-Man 3 edit.
Alonso, who helped steer the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for more than two decades, was let go on 17 March, with Disney citing an “indisputable breach of contract”, following her work on Amazon’s Oscar-nominated film Argentina, 1985, as the reason.
Alonso, via her attorney Patty Glaser, has denied this, instead saying she was fired after Marvel asked her “to do something she believed was reprehensible”.
“Victoria, a gay Latina who had the courage to criticise Disney, was silenced,” Glaser said.
The request was reportedly to do with the release of Marvel’s latest film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It’s been reported that Marvel bosses allegedly wanted an editor to blur a shop window that had rainbow decorations, as well as the word “Pride”, for its release in Kuwait,...

Former Marvel executive Victoria Alonso, who was suddenly terminated last month after being with the studio since the original “Iron Man,” has reached a settlement with Disney over her exit, IndieWire has learned.
Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Disney and Alonso’s attorney Patricia Glaser did not respond to a request for comment.
At the time of her exit, a studio insider said the reason for Alonso’s firing was because of a breach of contract involving her work as a producer on the Oscar-nominated film “Argentina, 1985.” The film, which was distributed by Amazon Studios and on which she was one of eight credited producers, amounted to a violation of company terms she signed in 2018 stating that Disney employees would not work with competing studios.

Victoria Alonso and Disney have reached a settlement over the Marvel Studios’ exec’s firing last month, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Alonso departed Marvel on March 17 with no explanation given publicly, though sources later told THR she was fired for her outside work producing the Oscar-nominated film Argentina, 1985 for Amazon after being warned not to pursue outside work. Former top Marvel Studios executive Victoria Alonso has resolved her dispute with Disney over her sudden exit from the company in a multimillion dollar settlement, Variety has confirmed.
The news comes a month after Alonso was fired from Marvel after 17 years at the company, most recently as president of physical production, post-production, VFX and animation.
In the days following the news of Alonso’s departure from Marvel, the reasons for it became a point of major contention.
