Quentin Dupieux returns with The Second Act, a playfully dour satire on the film industry that sees the French absurdist delve further into the apocalyptic mood and gallows humor of his recent Yannick. The Cannes opener stars some of the biggest names in the French film world as heightened versions of themselves: actors working on a film within the film (and perhaps a film within that), a conceit that allows them to break the fourth wall, basically winking at the audience conspiratorially while taking passing shots at themselves and some of the hands that feed them. In France, the concept of irony is referred to as “deuxième degré” (second degree), where the “premier degré” is the literal or surface meaning, which can be twisted as audiences read an entirely different, often contrary meaning into the material. But the game doesn’t necessarily stop there. There is also “troisième degré,” “quatrième degré” and so on, as deep as you want to go.

The César Awards are always the biggest night of the year for French cinema, but the massive award season impact of “Anatomy of a Fall” ensured that this year’s event took on additional importance for Oscar watchers around the globe. When the 49th César Awards took place in Paris on Friday night, all eyes were on Justine Triet and her Palme d’Or-winning film.
Predictably, “Anatomy of a Fall” swept many of the night’s biggest categories. In addition to winning the top prize of Best Film, Triet was honored with Best Director and shared Best Screenplay with her partner Arthur Harari. Stars Sandra Hüller and Swann Arlaud also won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.

Quentin Dupieux works at such a dizzying clip––”the French Hong Sangsoo,” they’re calling him somewhere, I assume––that a film of his so readily grabs our attention like A notre beau métier (To Our Beautiful Profession). But these first details sing on cast alone: a Télérama (via Ion Cinema) interview with Léa Seydoux confirms her involvement alongside Louis Garrel, Vincent Lindon, and frequent star Raphaël Quenard. Better yet that we might see it very soon, with Seydoux claiming, “Quentin offered me the film two months ago, the filming was done straight away, and we only filmed for two weeks!”

After a 2023 where he gave us a double bill in Daaaaaali! (read review) and Yannick, Quentin Dupieux is still seeing double. The quartet of Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Raphaël Quenard (appeared in Yannick) and Louis Garrel are all part of Dupieux’s current zany-sounding feature which is currently filming. Seydoux confirmed that they’ll be pulling double duty – the cast are playing two roles in what is a film about filmmaking and in this particular case horrible B-movie type of cinema. Carlos Alcaraz made a winning return to action at the 2023 China Open as he played his first match since bowing out of the US Open semi-finals.
There was naturally a lot of question marks for the Spaniard coming into this encounter. He had not played for a relatively long period of time, he was debuting at a brand new tournament for the very first time and there would be obvious adjustments to make to the typically quicker conditions at the China Open.
Alcaraz erased any concern fairly early on , though. He shook off the rust within the first couple of games, played with excellent controlled aggression for long periods, and in the end he limited Yannick Hanfmann's potentially dangerous game to great effect.

Salvador Dalí is walking down a hotel corridor. A hotel corridor is being walked down by Salvador Dalí. In a hotel, there is a corridor down which Salvador Dalí walks. So begins — and begins and begins – Quentin Dupieux’s giddy, glitchy altogether delightful “Daaaaaali!” (imagine the title delivered by a practiced yodeler in the middle of a morning gargle). It’s the oldest and lo-fi-est of cinematic tricks: a few simple cuts make it seem like a hotel hallway’s finite, solid space is elastic, stretching from the lift doors into carpeted absurdity. Like the film as a whole, the gag gets funnier as it gets sillier, and becomes more of a homage to the surrealist painter’s ability to warp the reality around him, the more drunken its time-loop chronology.

Since his delirious 2007 debut, Steak, DJ turned director Quentin Dupieux has kept up a steady pace of one or two feature films a year, making him among the most prolific directors currently working in France. One of the ways he pulls this off is by being a cinematic one-man-band, penning his own scripts, then shooting, editing and sometimes scoring his own movies, which tend to clock in somewhere between seventy and ninety minutes.

Iranian filmmaker Ali Ahmadzadeh clinched the Golden Leopard in the main international competition of the 76th Locarno Film Festival with his latest feature Critical Zone (Mantagheye Bohrani).
Ahmadzadeh was not in attendance to receive the award as he is currently banned from leaving his native Iran. Last month, the country’s authorities summoned Ahmadzadeh to the Ministry of Security, where he was pressured to pull Critical Zone from Locarno’s official competition. “You’re full of hate and frustrations. you should take a break,” director Quentin Dupieux once tweeted at me, immediately following my review of his 2014 film “Reality.” In another world, someone might have advised him against picking a fight with a film critic. You know, never quarrel with a man who buys ink by the barrel, and all that. But I didn’t mind. I’d said some harsh things about his movie. Seems only fair that he could retort.
In Dupieux’s latest, “Yannick,” the title character is a critic. Like Dupieux, Yannick does the unthinkable, expressing his displeasure. In a way. That. Is. Not. Done. The Jdd journalists have rejected Lejeune’s appointment saying his values are out of whack with those of the newspaper. They are also calling for a guarantee of editorial independence.
The industrial action meant the newspaper did not publish for a fifth consecutive week on Sunday (July 24), the longest period it has been absent from newspaper racks in its 75-history.

The Sound Of Metal actor will be presented with the Excellence Award Davide Campari at the opening night ceremony on the festival’s landmark Piazza Grande open-air cinema.
The ceremony will premiere Yann Mounir Demange’s semi-autobiographical short film Dammi, in which Ahmed participated alongside Isabelle Adjani, Souheila Yacoub, Sandor Funtek and Suzy Bemba.
