Dread and Iconic Events gave the horror anthology Satanic Hispanics a theatrical release on 800 screens in the United States, Canada, and Mexico back in September – and while a digital release of the film is available for rent or purchase at This Link, it will also be reaching Blu-ray later this month. The release date is December 19th, and copies can be pre-ordered Here.
The film consists of segments that were directed by five different Latin filmmakers: Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!), Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead), Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project), Demián Rugna (Terrified), and Gigi Saul Guerrero (Into the Dark: Culture Shock). The stories were written by Alejandro Mendez, Demian Rugna, Adam Cesare, and Lino K. Villa. It all begins when police raid a house in El Paso, full of dead Latinos, and with only one survivor: The Traveler. When the cops him to the station for questioning,...

The other demonic possession movie opening this week, “When Evil Lurks” is unlikely to steal major box-office thunder from “The Exorcist: Believer.” But Argentine genre specialist Demian Rugna’s latest is no mere opportunistic cash-in, either, with its own distinctive and non-formulaic take on the notion of an evil spirit that strikes like a malignant disease. IFC Films is releasing this uneven but engrossing, sometimes startling horror thriller to several hundred U.S. theaters on October 6. Shudder’s first Spanish-language original production begins streaming on that platform October 27.
Rugna had an international breakout five years ago with his third feature “Terrified” (aka “Aterrados”), about a fantastical, lethal infestation in a couple of middle-class Buenos Aires households. A Guillermo del Toro-produced English-language remake was announced, as well as “Terrified 2,” though neither has yet come to pass. Instead, we have this new “contagion” thriller, which trades its predecessor’s supposedly scientifically-explicable menace for a supernatural one,...

When Evil Lurks (Cuando Acecha la Maldad) is the new feature film from Argentinian director Demián Rugna. Rugna assured himself a place in horror history with his film Terrified in 2017 and then vanished off the scene until his segment in last year’s Satanic Hispanics. Thankfully he didn’t make us wait another five years for something new, and When Evil Lurks premiered this year at TIFF as part of its Midnight Madness program.
Appropriately enough the film starts somewhere around midnight when Pedro and his brother Jimmy are awakened by the sound of gunshots somewhere in the woods. Going to investigate the next morning they find a body, or half of one anyway, with a strange device nearby and a notebook in a language the brothers don’t recognize nearby.

"When police raid a house in El Paso, they find it full of dead Latinos, and only one survivor. He’s known as The Traveler, and when they take him to the station for questioning he tells them those lands are full of magic and talks about the horrors he’s encountered in his long time on this earth, about portals to other worlds, mythical creatures, demons and the undead. Stories about Latin American legends."

"Detectives - you have no idea what is coming." Epic Pictures has revealed a trailer for indie horror project Satanic Hispanics, arriving in theaters this September. The film spotlights Hispanic talent both in front and behind the camera. Each director hails from a different corner of Latin America, contributing folklore and political and social commentary from Argentina, Cuba, + Mexico, fused through a genre lens. This first premiered at Fantastic Fest last year, and it also played at the Brussells & Fantaspoa Fantastic Film Fests earlier this spring. A police raid takes place on a mystery location where a brutal massacre has happened and only one survivor remains. Taken into custody, the mysterious man has some strange tales to tell whilst the clock ticks down to a deadline that the man says will be the end of them all. The cast includes Efren Ramirez, Greg Grunberg, Hemky Madera, Jonah Ray Rodrigues, Ari Allegos,...
