“Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” music producer and songwriter Justin Tranter says their prolific career actually started with a passion for musicals.
“Musicals are why I started making music as a kid. Even though I was in a rock band and now I make pop music, musicals are why I started making music in the first place,” the Grammy-nominated songwriter told Variety at the Paramount+ series’ premiere Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Tranter has worked with Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga, the Chicks, Leon Bridges, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, just to name a few.
After “fighting hard” to join “Rise of the Pink Ladies” and providing demos for showrunner Annabel Oakes, the two then teamed up with choreographer Jamal Sims for the series. Along with some co-writers, Tranter wrote and produced 30 original songs for the 10-episode season.

Exclusive: Disney is developing a new musical comedy, Penelope, a unique twist on the classic fairy tale The Princess and the Pea. Robert Sudduth writing the script, and Will Gluck is producing through his Olive Bridge banner. Exact plot details are being kept under wraps other than it being loosely based on the classic fairy tale.
Sources also add that it is in early development but is being developed for a theatrical release. Original music by singer/songwriter for the film will be written Ingrid Michaelson and Broadway superstar Larry O’Keefe.
Sudduth has worked extensively in television, most recently as a co-executive producer on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and the upcoming musical prequel on Paramount+, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies. He’s expanded his talents on the feature side with several projects in development including Tias for Universal, Will Packer Productions and Eva Longoria’s Unbelievable Entertainment.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” after getting axed by NBC, may be getting a second life at Roku.
Roku, which has been bulking up its original programming slate, is in discussions with Lionsgate Television, the producer of the musical dramedy, for a movie special bringing back the original cast including star Jane Levy, Variety confirmed.
Roku and Lionsgate reps declined to comment.
Sources cautioned that while Roku and Lionsgate are in talks, there’s no deal signed. The project under discussion would be a two-hour movie special that would hit the Roku Channel around the 2021 holidays. While other reports have said Roku would have the option to pick up “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” for a new season, a source familiar with the talks said that’s not on the table and that the movie deal would be a one-off.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” is nearing a comeback, though it may be a brief one.
The musical comedy, which was canceled earlier this year by NBC after two seasons, is closing in on a deal with Roku for a two-hour movie that would wrap up the show, an individual with knowledge of the talks told TheWrap. The project is being eyed for the holidays.
According to TV Line, which broke the news, if the movie performs well, a potential third season could be in the cards. It is not yet a done deal but is in advanced negotiations. The entire main cast is expected to return, though not all deals are done.
Reps for Roku and Lionsgate, which produces the show with Universal Television, declined to comment. Peacock decided against ordering a third season after it was canceled in May.

The options on the cast of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, headlined by Jane Levy, expired earlier this week, and they have not been extended, I have learned.
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist lead studio Lionsgate Television has been looking to find a new home for the show since NBC canceled the series three weeks ago after two seasons and a potential move to NBCUniversal streamer Peacock did not materialize.
I hear conversations are still ongoing, with various options to continue the story of Zoey Clarke explored — series, miniseries or a movie. While none is believed to be close to reality, if any progresses, Lionsgate would need to make new deals with some or all of the Season 2 regular cast, which included Levy, Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar and Mary Steenburgen.

NBC has canceled “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” after two seasons, the network said Wednesday.
The show, a co-production between Lionsgate Television and Universal Television, will be shopped to other outlets. However, according to an individual familiar with the situation, NBC’s sister streaming service Peacock has already passed on a third season.
The news comes after the Austin Winsberg-created musical dramedy wrapped its second season back in May.
“In a world where finding loyal and passionate audiences is never easy, we believe there must be a home for this great, award-winning show with a passionate and dedicated following,” a Lionsgate spokesperson said in a statement on Wednesday.

In a world of frustratingly vague TV show titles like Reprisal, Dark, and Run, some titles have the moral courage to stand up and declare their intentions, loud and proud. Similarly to Wednesday night’s comedy line-up, the Thursdays comedies are also starting to decline. Although a lot of the weaker new shows air on Thursday (The Michael J. Fox Show, The Millers, Sean Saves the World and so on), it’s the long-running sitcoms that are letting the evening down.
The Big Bang Theory, Season 7, Episode 5, “The Workplace Proximity”
Directed by Mark Cendrowski
Written by Steven Molaro, Steve Holland & Maria Ferrari (Story), Chuck Lorre, Eric Kaplan & Jim Reynolds (Teleplay)
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Est on CBS
Up until the sixth season, The Big Bang Theory was consistently entertaining as it successfully moved the characters forward whilst providing an endless amount of laugh-out-loud moments. Now in its seventh season, the show appears to be stuck in the same rut that Modern Family is in. Like the Dunphy-Pritchett-Delgado clan, the characters on Tbbt have all come a long way since the show premiered.
