Comic book horror is thriving and there's no shortage of great storytelling in sight, especially with the announcement of a brand-new fictional universe from Mike Mignola and Ben Stenbeck. Starting this December, Dark Horse Comics will publish Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, the first release from Curious Objects, Mike Mignola’s new imprint at Dark Horse Comics that will "set the stage for more weird, wicked, and whimsical stories in the 'Lands Unknown' universe."
"In Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, the stories are fantastical, odd and charming — from a search for the beating heart of a long-dead sorcerer, to a pirate girl who makes a deal with the devil, to the titular boy who wins a grim prize in a game with undead interlopers." The anthology of folklore-inspired fantasy stories is written and illustrated by Mike Mignola, with colors by Dave Stewart,...

As eerily imaginative as he is impressively prolific, Mike Mignola (along with artist Ben Stenbeck) continues to explore the creepy confines of his ever-expanding "Mignolaverse" with the ongoing four-issue miniseries Koshchei in Hell. Following the further hellish adventures of the soulless sorcerer (and former foe of Hellboy) with a taste for fine wine and good books, Koshchei in Hell will be collected and published in hardcover by Dark Horse Comics this August, and we're honored to exclusively reveal Mignola's cover art for the upcoming collection!
Below, you can view Mignola's stunning cover art (which also features colors by Dave Stewart) as well as his process art for the Koshchei in Hell hardcover. Here's what Mignola himself had to say about creating this gorgeous cover:
“Your characters are like your children—and while you’re not supposed to have a favorite child, I think it’s probably fine to have a favorite character.

It is often compared to The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery. In over 25 years of making comics, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola has established himself as a creator with such a distinct aesthetic that not only is it possible to identify his work on sight — macabre yet charming, full of shadows so deep and black they look alive, hiding horrors within — but also the work of those he’s chosen to collaborate with. You can always tell when a work is set in the Mignola-verse, and part of the fun of following along is seeing Mignola’s unique stylings applied to familiar genres and story archetypes — the latest of which being Frankenstein’s famous monster. In this month’s new graphic novel Frankenstein Underground (you can read the first chapter here), Mignola, artist Ben Stenbeck, and colorist Dave Stewart spin a Frankenstein tale spun out of a corner of the Hellboy universe, one that takes the iconic monster on a weird, Jules Verne...

His name is synonymous with Hellboy, but for five issues this spring Mike Mignola will be stepping away from Hellboy to visit with one of the greatest monsters in history: Frankenstein. In Frankenstein Underground, a five issue mini-series from Dark Horse, the monster finds himself at an ancient temple in Mexico and endears to make a friend before things go (inevitably) wrong. Mignola chatted with us about his version of the monster and its relationship to the original novel, as well as his general creative process when writing for artist Ben Stenbeck. Plus, we couldn’t resist asking about Hellboy In Hell, just a little. And beer.
Famous Monsters. Frankenstein Underground is a new spinoff from the Hellboy graphic novel House Of The Livind Dead. What do you think it is about Mary Shelley’s creation that has made people develop so many iterations of him? People are always writing and talking about him.

In honor of the release of Christopher Golden's Joe Golem and the Drowning City in limited edition hardcover on October 3 and Baltimore: The Play, his collaboration with Mike Mignola, on November 21, Dark Horse editor Scott Allie interviewed the award-winning author for us.
Topics covered in the interview include Golden's interpretation of the term "dark fantasy," his upcoming project with True Blood author Charlaine Harris, vampires in our current culture, his influences, the scariest thing he's written, and Lots more. Check it out below, and look for more guest blogs from Scott Allie over the coming weeks.
Scott Allie: Can you explain “dark fantasy” to me?
Christopher Golden: The easy approach would be to say it's a merger of horror and fantasy, but that's not always true. For me, dark fantasy is fantasy in which nasty things happen. For people who've read my original novels, dark fantasy would be easy to recognize.

Baltimore, Vol. 1: The Plague Ships
Hardcover
Written by Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden
Art by Ben Stenbeck
Dark Horse Comics Release date: June 8, 2011
In Baltimore, Vol. 1: The Plague Ships, the end of World War I brings about a plague that overruns Europe with the existence of vampires. Lord Henry Baltimore, a former soldier, dedicates his life to making these monsters extinct and searches for the one monster that ruined his life.
I have to admit that I’ve never read a comic by Mike Mignola. I’ve only seen the Hellboy films and I enjoyed both of them. When I got a chance to read Baltimore: The Plague Ships, I was hesitant. The story seemed like it could be good or bad. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the book. I really liked the character of Lord Henry Baltimore. He not only has physical scars from war,...

One of the best and most exciting novels of the past few years is currently being adapted into one of Dark Horse Comics' most entertaining series. Written by original authors Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden (and featuring art by Ben Stenbeck and colors from Dave Stewart), Baltimore: The Plague Ships continues the vampire hunting, monster killing and all around early 1900's badassery of Lord Henry Baltimore. This past August 28th saw the San Diego debut of the Blacklist Art and Film Festival, and your local Dread Central staff members were on hand for the event. We're happy to report a good time was had by all, and even though we'd seen a couple of the horror shorts shown during the film fest portion already, they really popped thanks to the enthusiastic crowd.
What types of films were there? Only several of the best shorts the genre has seen in some time: Jason Eisener's hilariously brilliant "Treevenge" (review here), the clever and surprising Aussie flick "Spider" from Nash Edgerton, and Ryan Spindell's quite well made "Kirksdale" (the longest entry of the night with a runtime of 21 minutes). These three came in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Beast in Show, respectively, and were all well deserving. They were joined by:

If getting sand in your crotch while watching awesome short films sounds like a good time, then you better head on out to the first ever Black Rock City Film Festival, which is taking place right now, Aug. 30 to Sept. 3, at the legendary Burning Man gathering in the Nevada desert. If you’re already at Burning Man, hopefully you get cell reception and can see this lineup so you know where the best place is to be every night.
This event is a joint endeavor for the Boston Underground Film Festival and San Francisco’s IndieFest, who have selected over two dozen short films to screen at their open air theater. There are no start times for when these films will screen, but I would assume it would be sometime after sundown. Plus, there will be cocktail parties before and after the screenings, as well as Opening Night and Closing Night bashes.

August kicks off with another awesome week of comic buys. Vertigo Comics hits the ground running with a new Vertigo Crime novel Fogtown, while House of Mystery continues to delight. Over at Wildstorm, we're all about Kane and Lynch #1. One of our most sought out video games of the summer is getting its own comic. Wildstorm tends to give game books the special Tlc they need so we're anxious to see what they've done with Kane & Lynch. Also The Authority turns 25 this week. Over at Dark Horse Comics, we've got our eyes glued to Baltimore: The Plague Ships #1. This comic, based on the novel by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden will definitely be one to check out, especially with Witchfinder artist Ben Stenbeck on the job. At DC Comics we've got several winners, from Batman: Odyssey to Secret Six. Did we mention Brightest Day? Okay. How about Red ...
