Mumbai, Feb 23 (Ians) Veteran filmmaker J.P. Dutta, who has made films such as ‘Border’, ‘Loc Kargil’ and ‘Refugee’, was conferred with the prestigious Maharashtra Bhushan Raj Kapoor Award for his exceptional contributions to Indian cinema.
Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra received the prestigious Raj Kapoor Special Contribution Award by Maharashtra Government’s Cultural Division at the Maharashtra Bhushan Awards for his contribution.
Dutta was feted by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The honour was given to him at the award ceremony held in Mumbai.
The ‘Border’ director said: “This recognition means everything as it comes from the place I was born and brought up in. This state, this city is my home and there is nothing bigger than to be honoured by your home. Mumbai, Aug 24 (Ians) Veteran Bollywood and Marathi film actress Seema R. Deo – who essayed a key role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s superhit film ‘Anand’ (1971) – passed away here following a prolonged illness, family sources said on Thursday.
She was 81 and breathed her last at a private hospital on Thursday morning after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and other ailments.
Born in Mumbai as Nalini Saraf, Seema Deo is survived by her two sons, actor Ajinkya and director Abhinay.
According to family sources, her body was shifted from the hospital to her son’s residence in Bandra and later was taken in a procession to Dadar to enable film industry people to pay their last respects.

The Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company on Saturday said it is ‘deeply saddened’ by the demise of ace Art Director Nitin Chandrakant Desai under tragic circumstances, on Saturday. In a statement, the Edelweiss Arc said that it had extended financial assistance to Desai’s company in 2016-2018 for setting up a theme park and working capital.
Desai’s company has encountered financial difficulties since 2020 and various attempts to improve its financial situation did not bear fruit.
The company was eventually referred to Nclt in 2022 and admitted by the Nclt, Mumbai in July 2023.
“Edelweiss Arc followed all legal processes as mandated by Rbi and has not acted in any manner outside of the legal framework. Mumbai, May 30 (Ians) Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has been appointed as the ‘Smile Ambassador’ for the Maharashtra government’s oral hygiene campaign titled ‘Swachh Mukh Abhiyaan’, here on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Cm Devendra Fadnavis signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for five years with Tendulkar for the major state-wide initiative, officials said.
Speaking on the occasion, Fadnavis said that the Swachh Mukh Abhiyaan (Sma), an oral health mission, is run by the state Medical Education Department and Tendulkar shall be its ‘Smile Ambassador’ for five years.

South Goa Member of Parliament Francisco Sardinha on Wednesday said that there is no issue giving Mhadei water for drinking purposes, but Karnataka’s main aim behind diverting water is for steel plants.
Addressing a press conference, Congress leader Sardinha said that if the water is diverted for irrigation purposes, then Goa will suffer.
“We have no problem if the water is taken for drinking purposes. But we can’t allow it for irrigation purposes. Karnataka’s main aim to divert Mhadei water is for steel plants,” Sardinha said.
“If water is diverted then the environment, flora and fauna will be destroyed. There will be scarcity of water in Goa. Nobody knows what will be a picture (without water). The Goa government should look at our interests,” he said.

Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale on Thursday called on the family of the late actress Tunisha Sharma at their home in Mira Road town in Thane and assured that justice will be done to them.
Athawale said that he met the actress’ mother Vanita Sharma and other relatives, and consoled them for Tunisha’s sudden death that has shattered the family.
Later, in a brief media interaction, he said that the Sharma family has demanded stringent action against Tunisha’s former boyfriend and co-actor Sheezan Khan for alleged abetment of her suicide on December 24.
“I have sought an in-depth investigation into this case… Khan had betrayed her and he should get capital punishment. I shall also meet Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Cm Devendra Fadnavis and request them to give a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the family,” said Athawale.

Nagpur, Dec 21 (Ians) The Maharashtra government will soon set up a Task Force to monitor the Covid situation, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the state Assembly on Wednesday.
He said the state government will coordinate with the Central government and its agencies on this.
Fadanvis was replying to a query from Opposition Leader Ajit Pawar, who raised the issue in the Lower House.
Pawar expressed concern over the return of Covid and the precautions taken by China, US and Japan, and called for initiating urgent measures to tackle the situation.

Mumbai, Nov 16 (Ians) In what is billed as a major public health initiative, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will inaugurate 51 Hindu HridaySamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Clinics on the lines of ‘mohalla’ (neighbourhood) dispensaries all over Mumbai, ahead of the upcoming BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation elections.
Shinde will inaugurate one such free clinic at Dharavi near the Ongc Building through a video-link and within the next six months, 220 such dispensaries shall be functional in the city, especially the slum pockets, officials said.
According to Bmc Executive Health Officer Mangala Gomare, these clinics shall be manned by one doctor, one nurse, a compounder, and a helper and will function for 8-10 hours as needed in different localities.
Coinciding with the 10th death anniversary of late Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, while some of the clinics shall come up in porta-cabins, others will be in the premises of existing clinics or Bmc ward offices or rented places.

Mumbai, Oct 20 (Ians) Amol Kale defeated former India cricketer Sandeep Patil in the Mumbai Cricket Association (McA) elections held here on Thursday, to become the new president of the body.
Kale, who was backed by Ashish Shelar — a Bjp Mla from Mumbai and the newly-elected treasurer of the Bcci — beat Patil by 25 votes for the top post of McA. While Kale received 183 votes, Patil managed 158 votes in the 370-vote electoral college.
After the victory, Kale, who is a close aide of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and was vice-president in the previous McA dispensation, said he respects Patil’s contribution to cricket and will look to utilise his experience.
“During the election, we were only adversaries, not rivals. My respect for Sandeep remains intact. He has been a great cricketer for India and we will not hesitate to utilise his experience and expertise,” the newly elected president was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
