This film overflows with Kiwi humor that, unfortunately, will be lost on many audiences. New director Mike Wallis brings you something completely different in the spaghetti western romantic comedy .Good for Nothing.. If you think it.s so easy, try it. Inge Rademeyer plays English woman of breeding Isabella Montgomery, on the way to her father.s ranch. As she disembarks from the stagecoach a funny thing happens. .The Man. (Cohen Holloway..Boy. and .Eagle vs. Shark.) shows up and falls in love with her. We know it is true love, because he kills everybody in the room who has lain eyes on the luscious and oh so vulnerable Inge. As the film goes on, more men lay eyes on...

Title: Good For Nothing Director: Mike Wallis Starring: Cohen Holloway, Inge Rademeyer, Richard Thompson, Jon Pheloung, Toby Leach, Toa Waaka A Kiwi-shot Western which details the odd, thawing relationship between a vulnerable kidnapped woman and her uncouth captor, “Good For Nothing” is a movie which tells a pretty simple story but leaves its quiet mark — to the extent that it imparts one — chiefly via the unfussy naturalistic performances of its leads. Lacking much in the way of narrative dynamism, the film should chiefly appeal to genre enthusiasts. A well-off Englishwoman on the way to her uncle’s frontier ranch in the wake of the death of her father, Isabella Montgomery (Inge Rademeyer) is forewarned that this “isn’t [ Read More ]...

Tgif bitches! I set off for the magical land of queso and breakfast tacos tonight -- yep! Going to Austin for SXSW. But not without a little Friday In Theaters to set you off right. It just wouldn't be right to depart without a mild rant about the "John Carter" marketing campaign! Yes, this weekend the questionable Civil War/Sci-Fi "John Carter" muscles its way into theaters, as well as Elizabeth Olsen spooky movie "Silent House," and funny attractive people with problems rom-com "Friends with Kids."
Time for a quiz! Based off the "John Carter" billboards and posters plastered about your town, what do you think the movie is about? A) a caveman hunting elephants B) a Roman slave forced to fight prehistoric creatures in the Coliseum C) a Confederate soldier who gets beamed to Mars after finding a medallion in a cave, where he befriends some aliens, gets a princess humanoid girlfriend,...

Westerns get a new accent in New Zealand's "Good For Nothing." Enter the universe of this film, and you'll soon know that it's a man's world, with dusty cheeks, spit-slinging bad guys, and danger rattling like a snake around every corner. The gents don't fool around, which explains why the tagline reads "This Ain't No Place For A Lady." And yet, a lady we see at the film's start, an Englishwoman who sets her dainty, proper feet on violent soil, within seconds in the clutches of a violent marauder whose closeness only makes the class chasm separating them grow wider.
Our unnamed criminal, a dark, brooding type with some noticeable hygenic issues, nonetheless cuts a handsome figure in a cowboy hat. Even as he grabs this fair lady while running from bullets (the implicit suggestion that, if not now, he'll eventually use her as a shield), we see it from his perspective,...

Told with gusto, style, and respect, Good For Nothing displays a becoming modesty for an old-school Western that features a murdering, would-be rapist as a heroic character. When it comes to Westerns, so many tropes have been etched into our collective cinematic memory that the biggest challenge facing modern filmmakers is deciding which stereotypes to celebrate, critique, satirize, and / or stand on end. Writer/director Mike Wallis has chosen wisely. The male lead character is a man with no name. Unlike Clint Eastwood, however, this Man (Cohen Holloway) is not motivated by money or revenge; he's motivated by his penis, which fails to respond when he attempts to "poke" -- as he not so charmingly refers to rape -- an unwilling woman. The female...

Yes, erectile dysfunction. Tell me you’ve seen that one before in a Western and I’ll call you a liar. But that’s precisely at the heart of Mike Wallis’ Kiwi Western, “Good for Nothing”. Okay, so maybe not at the heart of it, but perhaps a tad lower. If, er, you get my meaning. Mind you, not that that’s all the film has going for it. It’s certainly a kooky little endeavor, and not just because it’s a Kiwi Western. I don’t know if the whole thing is intended to be an American Western, but it sure looks like it. But hey, I’m always down for a theatrical Western. That’s what’s wrong with this world — not enough theatrical Westerns, even if they do hail from New Zealand. An outlaw reluctantly develops strong feelings for a woman he has kidnapped. Yet when...

Written, directed and produced by Mike Wallis (animation coordinator on “Avatar” and “The Day the Earth Stood Still”), “Good for Nothing” is inspired by spaghetti Westerns like those of Sergio Leone (“A Fistful of Dollars,” “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”). In what seems an unlikely stand-in for the American Southwest, where the film is set, “Good for Nothing” is the first Western filmed in New Zealand.
The movie stars newcomer Inge Rademeyer (another producer of the film and Wallis’ wife) as Isabella Montgomery, a strong-willed Englishwoman who has come to the American Southwest and is abducted en route to her uncle’s ranch. With her escorts murdered by her abductor, known only as “The Man” (Cohen Holloway), Montgomery is held for ransom.
Mildly provoked by his prisoner, the Man — a dirty, ruthless murderer — attempts to rape her,...

Sneak Peek the New Zealand-lensed western feature "Good For Nothing", written/directed by fomer animation co-ordinator Mike Wallis ("Avatar").
"...Having lost her father back home, a young English woman (Inge Rademeyer) steps off a locomotive in the middle of a dusty wild West outpost to stay at her uncle’s ranch. But those plans are derailed by a bad hombre (Cohen Holloway) who blows away her chaperones and claims her as 'bounty'. But after having 'performance' issues, the hombre sets out to seek treatment from local Chinese and Indian medicine men while dodging an approaching posse..."
"Good For Nothing" was filmed in New Zealand's Bendigo goldfields, Cromwell and on the Kingston Flyer steam train in Central Otago and Mackenzie Country.
"The idea of this film was that it is like a 'spaghetti' western," said Wallis, "but it is shot in New Zealand rather than Italy so it is a 'pavlova' western.
