- As a studio musician, he played with many artists including Judy Collins, Joe Walsh, Bruce Cockburn, Bonnie Raitt, and Bob Dylan. Recently, he had been producing and playing with the Toronto-based jazz group Pork Bellies Futures.
- He began piano lessons at the age of 4, and studied at Canada's Royal Conservatory of Music. He also learned to play the organ, saxophone, and accordion, and composed music.
- He was keyboardist with Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks in the 1960s. While on tour in New York, he was contacted by Janis Joplin's manager. He began playing with Joplin in 1970. He later joined The Band as keyboardist.
