There's a myopia to "Diana," the new film about the divorce and last great romance of Princess Diana's life, that fits its subject like one of Diana's signature, custom-tailored gowns.
Isolated, focused on her image, her few contacts with the outside world and her work, when this lonely and lovelorn woman (Naomi Watts) zeroes in on something or someone, it seems obsessive, smothering and all-consuming.
And dismiss it as worthy of a Lifetime Original Movie if you want, but this film from the director of the Fuhrer bunker drama "Downfall" gives us insights into this poor little royal plaything that Americans, at least, will find eye-opening.
Based on "Diana, Her Last Love," by Kate Snell, Oliver Hirschbiegel's film depicts a manipulator practicing her most withering lines about her failed marriage to Prince Charles in front of a vanity mirror.
"There were three of us in this marriage," she famously told her TV interrogator.

Movie: Diana; Cast: Naomi Watts, Naveen Andrews, Douglas Hodge, Charles Edwards, Geraldine James, Juliet Stevenson, Cas Anvar; Director: Oliver Hirschbiegel; Rating: *1/2 stars - A tepid telling of the Princess Diana tale.
The story of the late Queen of Hearts and Princess of Wales, Diana, has been an open book and the expectation from this tale is colossal.
Unfortunately, Director Oliver Hirschbiegel's "Diana" inspired by British journalist, Kate Schnell's 2001 book, "Diana: Her Last Love," does not attempt to place her within any historical or political period. Instead, the film pans the dramatic last two years of Diana's.

The romantic drama focuses on the final two years of Diana's life, and specifically her relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews).
Digital Spy sat down with Watts and Hirschbiegel to discuss the challenges of portraying Diana on screen, and the physical preparation Watts undertook for the role.
Watts also discussed the sympathy she felt for Diana's lack of privacy, given her own experiences with the paparazzi, while Hirschbiegel compared the experience of making Diana to his 2004 drama Downfall, which followed Adolf Hitler's final days.
The script was written by Stephen Jeffreys, while the film's supporting cast features Douglas Hodge, Geraldine James, Charles Edwards and Juliet Stevenson.
Diana is released in the UK on September 20, and in the Us on November 1.

The critics have spoken. Following the September 5 London premiere of Oliver Hirschbiegel's "Diana," starring Naomi Watts, negative reviews haranguing the biopic hit the web with a resounding thud. What was once thought to be an Oscar hopeful for long-overdue Aussie actress Watts has now been derided as a "squirmingly embarrassing," "cheap and chearless effort." Oy. "Diana" follows the last two years of Diana's life, charting her various romances and her evolution into a major international campaigner and humanitarian. The cast includes Naveen Andrews as heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan and Charles Edwards as Patrick Jephson. The film focuses primarily on Diana's affair with Khan, which lasted from 1995 until a few months before her death in 1997. While the first trailer (below) smacked of Lifetime-ready sentimentalism, awards pundits had previously tapped Watts, twice-Oscar-nominated for her gobsmacking lead performances in "21 Grams" and "The Impossible," as a possible early...

Early on in Oliver Hirschbiegel's mind-bogglingly misjudged Princess Diana biopic, we're shown a key recreated portion of her iconic BBC Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, during which she admits to having self-harmed in the past. Naomi Watts, here taking on what was arguably always a poisoned chalice, has said that she became "obsessed" with re-watching the Bashir interview during her research, and the use of this segment in particular would seem to suggest that Hirschbiegel is approaching this as a promisingly layered character study.
Instead, you can almost hear screenwriter Stephen Jeffreys declaring "now, that's quite enough of that" as soon as he's able to tick off the Obligatory Psychological Delving box. At this point the script take a hard right turn into the less-than-fruitful dramatic pastures...

Young writers James Graham and Nick Payne vie with Caryl Churchill, while actor Hattie Morahan goes up against Cate Blanchett as Young Vic gains five nominations
Young playwrights James Graham and Nick Payne will compete with the legendary Caryl Churchill for best new play at this year's Evening Standard theatre awards.
Churchill, who won her first Evening Standard award 25 years ago for Serious Money, is shortlisted for Love and Information at the Royal Court, London, while Graham, 30, is up for political thriller This House, and Payne, 28, Constellations, currently previewing in the West End.
By a strange quirk of fate, Graham and Payne are younger than two of the nominees for the Charles Wintour most promising playwright award: actor Lolita Chakrabarti, 43, and screenwriter John Hodge, 47, both of whom saw their first plays staged this year in Red Velvet and Collaborators respectively. That category is completed by Tom Wells, author of The Kitchen Sink.

Why do people love to hate Gwyneth Paltrow? Is it because she is so tall and pretty and blonde and she married a British dude with good teeth (but a bland band) and we are all super jealous? No! Well sort of. But really it’s because she says stupid, ignorant things, and seems to be unaware of the fact that there are people in the world who aren't multi-millionaires with a penchant/obsession for ultra elitist living. Once again, super snob Gwyneth Paltrow has proved she is totally out of touch with the 99% of the population when she recently told InStyle magazine that she doesn’t allow her absurdly named wee ones, Apple and Moses, to watch TV in English. Apparently, only Romance languages French or Spanish will do for Gwyneth's offspring -- because they are better than your kids.

Many months after David Seidler stood on stage at the Academy Awards clasping the Oscar for Original Screenplay we can experience The King’s Speech as the writer first envisaged, with a sharper political edge and a deeper exploration of the personalities circling the central relationship of the reluctant King and his antipodean, unqualified, speech therapist.
Though the spectres of Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush haunt the first moments of the play, and never truly leave the stage, Adrian Noble’s direction allows the play’s central themes to flourish at a brisk pace, setting the sad and perilous state of the monarchy up against the dark and uncertain future with an exceptional central performance from Charles Edwards whose external timidity and volcanic internal anger are perfectly balanced as he is buffeted between duty and desire. At Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud theatre, playwright David Seidler has much more room to explore the story's historical background than the cinema version allowed
Watching David Seidler's play induces a strong sense of deja vu. That's not simply because it was the source of a hugely successful, Oscar-winning film. It is also because Seidler's perfectly enjoyable play taps into our recollections of other, more resonant works.
Until I saw it on stage, I had not realised how much Seidler's piece owed to Alan Bennett's The Madness of George III. In both we see an embattled royal subjected to all kinds of curative humiliations by a rogue outsider: in Bennett's play it was a bluff Lincolnshire parson whereas in Seidler's it is a tough Aussie speech specialist in the shape of Lionel Logue. I was also reminded of Tom Murphy's outstanding 1983 play, The Gigli Concert, in which a charlatan...

Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternated for each performance of a three-month run at the National Theatre
After alternating playing Victor Frankenstein and the Creature for each performance of a three-month run at the National Theatre, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller have been rewarded jointly with the best actor prize at the UK's longest-running theatre awards.
The judges for the 2011 London Evening Standard awards said it would have been "invidious not to recognise both actors" for what were memorable performances in Frankenstein, the Danny Boyle-directed production.
One role involved two hours in makeup and getting naked on stage to play Frankenstein's creation; the other, that of the egomaniac scientist himself, did not.
Although the awards have been running since 1955, Cumberbatch and Miller are among the few to share the best actor award, jointly following in some illustrious footsteps – the first recipient was Richard Burton for Henry V,...

London — "Frankenstein" co-stars Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch both won the best actor prize at London's Evening Standard Theater Awards on Sunday.
They alternated the roles of Victor Frankenstein and his monstrous creature in director Danny Boyle's production. The pair beat competition from Bertie Carvel for "Matilda: The Musical" and Charles Edwards for "Much Ado About Nothing."
Sheridan Smith won the best actress prize for her part as a former barmaid in "Flare Path."
Kristin Scott Thomas, who was also shortlisted for best actress award for her part in "Betrayal" was awarded the Lebedev Special Award. Organizers said the prize, named after the Evening Standard chairman Evgeny Lebedev, was "in recognition that her (Thomas's) appearance immediately turns a production into an event and in the hope she'll do even more on the London stage."

HollywoodNews.com: “The King’s Speech” is headed to Broadway. But readers of this column know I broke this story last year–that David Seidler wrote the script as a play, then converted it into the Oscar winning film. Producers have announced that British actor Charles Edwards and Australian Jonathan Hyde will play, respectively, King George VI and Lionel Logue, playing the roles originated on screen by Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush.
They will likely not be the actors who come to Broadway, but for the time being these guys will tour the United Kingdom starting in February 2012 and open in the West End sometime next spring. The Broadway opening would most likely occur a year from now. Adrian Noble is set as director. Here’s the link to the original story, just so some others don’t try to claim it was theirs: http://www.showbiz411.com/2010/10/26/kings-speech-oscar-buzzed-film-set-for-broadway-next-year

Stephen Fry is set to portray God in a new BBC4 comedy. The actor and presenter will play the almighty in 'Holy Flying Circus', based on the religious controversy caused by Monty Python movie 'Life of Brian', which took a comedic look at the life of Jesus Christ. The actors from the original film have also been recast; Darren Boyd will play John Cleese, Steve Punt will portray Eric Idle and Charles Edwards will be Michael Palin. Richard Klein, head of BBC4, said: "This is a smart and witty take on both the nature of censorship and the world of...

The Lord of Twitter is set to become to Lord of Everything, with the tweeted news this morning that Stephen Fry is to play God is the forthcoming BBC drama about the excessive ecclesiastical response to the 1979 film Monty Python’s Life of Brian.
We reported earlier in the week that the film had been cast and now it seems filming is already underway for the scheduled transmission on BBC4 in Autumn.
Fry, as God (who curiously is the only character to appear in all of the Python films), will be playing alongside Darren Boyd (John Cleese), Charles Edwards (Michael Palin), Steve Punt (Eric Idle), Rufus Jones and Phil Nichol as Terrys Jones and Gilliam respectively and Tom Fisher plays the late Graham Chapman.

BBC Four has ordered a one-off comedy surrounding the controversy arising from the release of Monty Python film Life of Brian. The Thick of It's Tony Roche will pen the 90-minute piece, entitled Holy Flying Circus, which will star Darren Boyd as John Cleese and Charles Edwards as Michael Palin. Holy Flying Circus - named after the group's BBC sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus - will also feature Steve Punt as Eric Idle, Rufus Jones (more)...

Have pity on Darren Boyd, Charles Edwards, Steve Punt, Rufus Jones, Phil Nichol and Tom Fisher. For to these six men falls the unenviable task of portraying the six members of Monty Python's Flying Circus in upcoming BBC production Holy Flying Circus.Written by The Thick Of It and In The Loop co-writer Tony Roche with Owen Harris (Misfits, Secret Diary Of A Call Girl) directing, Holy Flying Circus will be a dramatic re-telling of the controversy surrounding the theatrical release of the Python's 1979 feature film The Life Of Brian. Though Brian - which I personally believe is far and away the best thing the Pythons ever did - was a big success on release the nature of the story - which revolves around...

Monty Python’s 1979 film Life of Brian was a masterpiece of surreal and satirical comedy, and always places high when the various Best British Film of All Time polls are announced.
On release its controversial subject matter inevitably ruffled a great many ecclesiastical feathers and was banned in some places in the UK, a ban rumoured to have been upheld in Swansea until 1997.
The documentary The Secret Life of Brian charts the film’s development (from Eric Idle’s glb response to the question of what the Pythons were working on next – he quipped: Jesus Christ – Lust for Glory!) to the famous showdown on the BBC debate programme Friday Night, Saturday Morning. There Pythons John Cleese and Michael Palin were berated by the highly regarded broadcaster Malcolm Muggeridge and the Bishop of Southwark, the Right Reverend Mervyn Stockwood, for their film which they considered as blasphemous.

Holy Flying Circus to focus on comedians' struggle with church, councils and critics in runup to release of controversial film
"He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy" is one of the most oft-quoted lines in British comedy history. But the religious controversy that engulfed the Monty Python film in which the quote featured, Life of Brian, on its 1979 release was no laughing matter – and is now to be the subject of a BBC drama.
Holy Flying Circus, written by Tony Roche, a co-writer of the political satire The Thick of It, will air this autumn on BBC4 and aims to use the Life of Brian controversy to explore the subject of free speech.
Monty Python's irreverent take on the story of Jesus Christ revolved around Brian Cohen, a reluctant fictional Messiah in first century Judea who is eventually crucified. Church leaders in the Us and the UK protested,...

Sir Peter and Rebecca Hall's Twelfth Night is a father-and-daughter affair, but the critics feel it's lacking a sense of family fun
It's Bogof on Halls at the National right now, and the critics have been filling up their trolleys. "This production of Twelfth Night is [Sir Peter Hall's 80th] birthday present to himself and us," explains the Telegraph's Charles Spencer, "and it stars, movingly and magnificently, his daughter Rebecca Hall, now better known as a rising star of Hollywood."
"It catches perfectly the play's melancholy and preoccupation with time, transitoriness and loss," says our own Michael Billington, "even if it cannot efface golden memories of the one he did at Stratford in 1958." (No indeed. 1958, how will any of us forget it?) Even the Hollywood Reporter gets in on things, using words like "players" and "clad" to prove that, yes that's right, it does British theatre. (So long as there's a movie star involved.
