Women rarely make it into the main rock categories at the Grammys, but this year, the two solo female and women-led groups that managed to squeeze in to two categories took home the honors. St. Vincent's self-titled album scored the Best Alternative Album win, and Hayley Williams-led Paramore earned Best Rock Song for "Ain't It Fun." "St. Vincent" was up against Alt-j, Arcade Fire, Cage the Elephant and Jack White; and Paramore was up against songs from Ryan Adams, The Black Keys, Beck and White. Sinéad O'Connor' "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" won Best Alternative Album the year the category was launched, in 1991, and since then, no other solo female or female-led artists have won. Acts like the B-52s, Arcade Fire, Belly, Pj Harvey, Fiona Apple, Bjork, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Neko Case are shuffled into this category, but as history shows,...

Johnny Depp has said that he finds Hollywood actors who turn to music "sickening".
The actor has criticised stars using their fame to launch a music career, promising he would never start a band.
"That whole idea for me is a sickening thing, it's always just made me sick," Depp told reporters at the Berlin premiere of his new film Mortdecai (via The Sydney Morning Herald).
"I've been very lucky to play on friends' records and it's still going. Music is still part of my life. But you won't be hearing The Johnny Depp Band. That won't ever exist."
Depp plays guitar - appearing on stage with artists including Aerosmith, Ryan Adams and The Black Keys - and has recorded with Oasis and Marilyn Manson, among others.

Johnny Depp called out actors trying to piggyback their fame into musical careers, telling reporters in Berlin, "That whole idea for me is a sickening thing, it's always just made me sick," the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Depp — who was promoting his upcoming film Mortdecai — periodically moonlights as a guitarist, playing both live and in the studio with a number of high-profile acts. And while the actor said he was grateful for those opportunities, and that he would continue to play, he promised he wouldn't be forming The Johnny Depp Band anytime soon.

The 2015 Grammy nominations are in, and there are plenty of familiar faces in the various Rock categories, where even some of the new faces are getting to be too familiar. It's well known, that despite all the mountains of music released each year, the Grammy Awards tend to nominate the same acts over and over and over. Once a group has established a foothold in the biz, they're bound to return to the award show year after year, particularly in the Rock categories. While the Grammys often tend to look to past success stories for nominees in the Best Rock Album category -- last year's batch featured Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Neil Young and Led Zeppelin -- recent winners have been more contemporary. But since 2000, the category has been won by the Foo Fighters three times, and Green Day twice, and even relative upstarts like The Black Keys are starting...

Three years is a normal gap between albums for most artists, but Ryan Adams isn’t most artists. The singer/songwriter is rivaled only by Prince for his copious output. “Ryan Adam,” his first album since 2011’s “Ashes & Fire,” marks a solid, if not spectacular, return. Adams’ prodigious talent and musical curiosity has allowed him to dabble in several different genres, from rock to metal to country. “Ryan Adams” finds him at the intersection of classic rock and alt country. And if you’re going to going to lean toward classic rock, you might as well lean toward the greats: On album opener, “Gimme Something Good,” the swampy chugging guitar riff recalls The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards. “Trouble” has an engaging swagger redolent of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. “Am I Safe” essays a John Fogerty-like intro. “My Wrecking Ball” and “I Just Might” both have a touch of early and later-era Springsteen.

Sean Hannity and Ryan Adams don't like each other. The conservative pundit and the singer-songwriter have gotten into a Twitter war that seems to mostly involve name-calling.
There really isn't much else -- besides politics, of course -- in the fight.
Adams fired the first obvious shot in the battle, posting a tweet directed at Hannity on Monday (Aug. 5):

In Red Carpet Convos, we discuss what the actresses are wearing. Which is really an elaborate excuse (not that we need another) to talk actresses. Today's returning guest is Courtney Enlow Hall from Pajiba.
Nathaniel: Hi Courtney! Welcome back to Red Carpet Convos. This time I will try not to ask you to draw any pigs dressed as Janell Monae.
Courtney: Well as you know I'm exceptionally good at that, so I'm sad about this.
Nathaniel: This week the celebs came out for the annual Met Gala and the theme was "Punk". Because The Met is So counter-culture, you know.
Courtney: The Met is punk as fuck, Ryan Adams-style.
Ginny, Diaz, JLo, Kerry, and Angela Chase
Nathaniel: Actually maybe it is rebellious to go to a museum instead of sitting at home watching reality tv. I rescind my comment. The interesting thing to me about the looks we're about...

Ryan Adams has joked that he will quit writing "depressing music" if he is allowed to pen songs for the new Star Wars movies.
The alt-country star then chatted on Twitter with filmmaker Judd Apatow about the film franchise.
Adams said: "Hey @starwars Lemme do some crap in the new Star Wars movie and Ill quit writing this depressing music. Thanksbye."
Apatow responded: "How can I have more followers than Star Wars? I can see having more than Tron or Bloodwork. Something must be done."
To which Adams replied: "Imagine what George Lucas could do with Bloodwork now after the fact with the miracle of technology and green screens."
Last month, Adams performed at the Noel Gallagher-curated Teenage Cancer Trust shows at London's Royal Albert Hall, appearing in the UK with a full band for the first time in four years.

Longtime friends Andrew Nelson and Blount Floyd have been making music together for the entirety of their friendship. They’ve seen the rise and fall of two bands and watched several bandmates come and go, but writing and performing music together has kept the pair’s friendship alive amidst the many changes in lineup. Now, as Great Peacock, it seems the duo has really hit their stride. Performing harmony-driven folk rock tunes reminiscent of Ryan Adams, the band has been influenced by classic country artists as well as their contemporaries in the indie-folk scene. Check out the video for their track “Family...

At last week’s South by Southwest music conference, there was one telling absence on the list of participating artists: Kacey Musgraves. If things had gone according to plan from a couple of years ago, she likely would have been showcasing there. In 2011, she signed to Lost Highway Records, the boutique division of Universal Nashville, created by industry veteran Luke Lewis as a home for left-of-center artists like Ryan Adams and Lucinda Williams. She was doing sit-down acoustic gigs where she would play songs like “John Prine,” which included lines like, “Grandma cried when I pierced

We’d previously seen a series of grindhouse-tinged trailers for director Paul Schrader’s erotic La drama The Canyons. The film’s sneak peak of one of Lindsay Lohan‘s most emotional performances has debuted attached to the controversial New York Times article about ‘What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie.’
The film which co-stars porn star James Deen is described as a contemporary thriller that depicts ‘Youth, Glamor, Sex and Los Angeles, circa 2012.’
The clip shows Lohan’s passionate performance thoroughly described in the article:
Deen came to life; throwing the negligée-wearing Lohan hard to the ground and pounding his fist into a wall with such fury I wondered if he had broken his hand. Lohan lay slumped on the floor, her hands guarding her face, shoulders shaking, tears pouring down her cheeks. Between takes, she listened to Ryan Adams’s cover of ‘Wonderwall.’ After three shots,...

If you listen to our podcast you would have heard us last Friday discuss a New York Times article related to Paul Schrader's The Canyons written by Bret Easton Ellis and starring Lindsay Lohan and pornstar James Deen. Times reporter Stephen Roderick was given unfettered access to the production and the picture he paints is far from flattering. The piece notes how the film's producers felt it was a shoo-in for the Sundance Film Festival only to later be denied. The film will now be screened for buyers but perhaps its chances there may even be slim considering Ellis is quoted saying, "The film is so languorous. It's an hour 30, and it seems like it's three hours long. I saw this as a pranky noirish thriller, but Schrader turned it into, well, a Schrader film." Schrader even screened it for Steven Soderbergh who offered to do an edit of...

Lady Antebellum and Stevie Nicks will come together for an edition of Cmt’s “Crossroads,” which will air later this year on the cable outlet. The Fleetwood Mac singer and the country trio will tape the show, which features each act singing the other’s biggest hits. The show generally pairs a country artist with one of his or her musical heroes from another genre. Past collaborations include Taylor Swift with Def Leppard, The Avett Brothers with Randy Travis, Ryan Adams with Elton John and Carrie Underwood and Steven Tyler. The episode will tape later this month in Los Angeles. The taping comes...

This review is long overdue. It should’ve signed off the end of last year but instead it starts this year off with an uplifting ring. I would like to thank Evan Andree for his patience during my shambolic arranging of myself these past weeks, and congratulate him on a great Ep.
So I’m sat here, back home for Christmas and New Year, one hand fervently shaking a mug of coffee from my bedside table to my mouth, and the other teaming up with the rest of its arm as it acts as a shelf to an Anthology of American Literature that I’m scrambling through to get up to date on the required reading I haven’t even looked at until now. In the background I have Evan Andree’s Invisible Sap Ep on loop on my iTunes. It’s helping.
Setting aside Emily Dickinson,...

After the disappointing box office returns of 2009’s “Funny People," Universal is pulling no punches in making sure that everyone knows that “This Is 40” is a (quasi) sequel to Judd Apatow’s earlier hit “Knocked Up.” To that end, here are two featurettes from the film along with another listen to a song from the soundtrack. First up is a featurette that once again highlights Megan Fox’s breasts, not that anyone is complaining. We do also get to see appearances from Jason Segel, Chris O’Dowd and Charlyne Yi as well as some of the improvisation that Apatow’s films are famous for. Next is a featurette that focuses entirely on Paul Rudd’s Pete that connects his character to 2007's "Knocked Up." Lastly, if you head over to EW, you can have a listen to Ryan Adams’ contribution to the soundtrack, "Shine Through The Dark." Unlike Fiona Apple’s contribution,...
