In director Roland Emmerich's 1994 sci-fi thriller "Stargate," a mysterious metal ring, about nine feet wide, is discovered in the remote ruins of Egypt. The ring is found to be a mysterious technology that, when arranged properly, can open a doorway to a distant planet. Actors like James Spader and Kurt Russell pass through the Stargate and find themselves on a distant alien world called Abydos. Everything in Abydos looks like ancient Egypt, and we soon learn that the Abydosians once used the Stargate to visit Earth, enslave humans, and set up ancient Egyptian culture. The villain of the film is Ra (Jaye Davidson), an ancient alien who uses human bodies to extend his life.
There's a lot of cool design and slick special effects in "Stargate," but the alien mythology isn't explored thoroughly enough. Like most of Emmerich's films, it makes big swings visually yet never emerges from the realm of corny melodrama.

Solar eclipses, like the upcoming one on April 8, are a well-documented scientific phenomenon. As early as 763 Bce, ancient Assyrians were charting the process by which the path of the moon temporarily obstructs the sun, and astronomers have continued to do so for thousands of years since. Our knowledge of eclipses predates our knowledge of gravity, algebra, and toilet paper. We are well aware of their existence, and we are well aware of what causes them. (I mean, I personally am not, but other people ostensibly are.)
What the ancient Assyrians could not have possibly predicted,...

Known for starring in multiple movies like Star Wars to Taken, Hollywood star Liam Neeson came under fire after he defended high-profile men who have been accused of inappropriate behavior. One of the names he commented on also included the actor-filmmaker Dustin Hoffman, who infamously slapped his Kramer vs. Kramer co-star Meryl Streep and has also been accused of s*xual misconduct by many women.

Neeson, who suggested that there seems to be a “bit of a witch-hunt happening,” drew criticism from many who believe he is downplaying the seriousness of the allegations and failing to acknowledge the prevalence of such misconduct in various industries.

There are too many Marvel Comics out there to read them all — and I'm talking about both the current ongoing series, and the 85 years of accumulated material. The publisher is aware of this, so what's its solution to hook new readers?
In 2000, Marvel launched "Ultimate Marvel," a new series of comics set in a separate continuity from the original "Earth-616" comics. The Ultimate Marvel comics followed the classic heroes, from Spider-Man to the Avengers (renamed the Ultimates), getting their powers in a more contemporary-styled setting. These were comics written not to appeal to long-time, continuity-obsessed fans, but to hook the new generation of nerds obsessing over "Buffy" and "The X-Files." That reverberated back and Ultimate Marvel became the primary influence on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After highs and lows, Ultimate Marvel ended in 2015. In 2024, it returned ... sort of. Rather than a continuation of the old Ultimate Universe, Marvel has just...

When most people think of actor Josh Segarra, they likely think of the lovable himbos he’s become known for. From Lance in The Other Two to Pug in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law to Manny in Abbott Elementary, and even Danny in Scream VI, Segarra’s recent roles may not all be the sharpest tools in the shed, but there’s no denying that they’re all kind and loyal at their core. But before Segarra became known for playing these appealing dudes, he took a turn as Arrow’s scariest villain.

Robert Pattinson is all set to reprise his role as the Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman Part II, slated to hit theaters in 2025. Pattinson debuted as the titular character in The Batman (2022), giving the character a new perspective.
Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne wasn’t the usual rich playboy. The 37-year-old actor brought depth by portraying him as more of a recluse.

In the 2022 film, the British star faced off against Carmine Falcone—a cunning crime boss who runs his operations with an iron fist in Gotham City.
Falcone doesn’t have flashy costumes like other Batman villains, but he’s still a big part of Bruce Wayne’s story. Some also say that the villain might have always known that Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne is secretly The Batman.

Typically, saying you're more excited about something other than the new Lady Gaga project is fair grounds for having your queer card taken away, but an exception can be made in the case of "The People's Joker." Indeed, as intrigued as I am to watch Gaga's Harley Quinn sing and dance her way through a toxic romance with Joaquin Phoenix's Clown Prince of Crime in Todd Phillips' "Joker: Folie à Deux" (a sentence I couldn't have imagined writing after watching Phillips' original Scorsesean DC drama for the first time back in 2019), it's Vera Drew's trans-coming-of-age DC Comics superhero parody that has my current attention.
Drew, similar to her fellow trans comedienne Harper Steele (the subject of Will Ferrell's acclaimed upcoming Netflix documentary "Will & Harper"), has quietly worked on some of the more memorable and daring comedic offerings of the past decade. In addition to editing Scott Aukerman...

New Delhi, March 1 (Ians) Women-centric movies often end up highlighting stereotypes and essentialising people who belong to different gender communities.
But if, as protagonists in a narrative, women get to focus on or are oriented towards issues that confine them to pigeonholes, and also underline their experiences, perspectives and needs, it can truly be called a gynocentric film.
After wowing cinephiles with her directorial debut in ‘Dhobi Ghaat’, Kiran Rao tells a story in ‘Laapata Ladies’ that does not necessarily define feminism, or deal with it, but it sure delights both men and women with nuggets that describe a variety of facets of our lives, including policies, media, art, and organisations that prioritise the voices and concerns of women.
Set in 2001, somewhere in rural India in a fictional place named Nirmal Pradesh (though shot in Madhya Pradesh), ‘Laapata Ladies’ (Lost Ladies) is about Phool (Nitanshi Goel) and Jaya (Pratibha Ranta...

The Batman trilogy by Christopher Nolan got a lot of things right, but it also managed to get something horribly wrong. While there were some brilliant choices made in the films, such as the casting of Heath Ledger as Joker, some parts of the trilogy suffered under the weight of horrible decisions.
Liam Neeson as Ra’s al Ghul
One such choice was the casting of ethnically White actors to play the roles of Ra’s Al Ghul and Talia al Ghul, both of whom are depicted to be of Middle-Eastern descent in the comics. While there has been a resurgence in this particular criticism of Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, there is hope that upcoming Batman projects could correct these mistakes.

Both Bassem Youssef and James Gunn have clarified their stances on the recent fiasco surrounding Youssef’s alleged firing from Superman: Legacy. At the end of the controversy, it is clear that Youssef won’t be appearing as dictator Rumaan Harjavti in Gunn’s upcoming film. If you're an "X-Men" fan, you should be listening to the "Cerebro" podcast. The host, literary agent/"X-Men" historian Connor Goldsmith, and a guest (usually an "X-Men" writer or fan of some repute) discuss a chosen character — both their history and why they resonate.
The 101st episode of "Cerebro" (released May 2023) featured comic writer Jonathan Hickman, who relaunched the X-Men comics alongside artist Pepe Larraz in 2019 with intersecting miniseries "House of X" & "Powers of X" (the latter pronounced like the number 10). For the episode, they discuss En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse, the most infamous X-Men antagonist not named Magneto.
Writer Louise Simonson and artist Jackson "Butch" Guice created Apocalypse in 1986 as the shadowy villain for their book "X-Factor." He was revealed to be an immortal mutant, possibly the very first one. Born in Ancient Egypt, Apocalypse has shaped the curve of history to Herbert Spencer's survival of the fittest ethos.

While actor Christian Bale may have donned the mantle of Batman in director Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight trilogy’, it was not always going to be the case as actor Jake Gyllenhaal was considered to wear the batsuit in ‘Batman Begins’, according to screenwriter David S. Goyer.

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Christian Bale in the Batsuit for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, but screenwriter David S. Goyer revealed that Jake Gyllenhaal was considered for the role.

Another source said, “Ariana and Dalton’s friends have always been concerned by their whirlwind romance and felt their relationship would ultimately be short-lived. Their relationship has been rocky at different points, and they’ve had trouble making time for each other with scheduling issues.”

DC Extended Universe is counting down its last months of existence, as it’s set to officially end this December with its 15th and final movie, ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.’ Even though Dceu has two movies left to be released, the fans are already looking forward to July 2025, when James Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy’ will start a new cinematic universe based on DC characters.
‘Superman: Legacy’ is currently in active pre-production, and writer/director James Gunn announced that filming is set to start in January 2024. The ongoing WGA strike has not affected the movie’s development since Gunn turned in the screenplay just before the strike began. It was previously announced that David Corenswet would star as the new Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane.

While Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael will have plenty of mutants to take on in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, one thing they won’t be doing is making coleslaw, as Shredder won’t be featured in Mutant Mayhem despite being the most recognizable villain in the franchise. But you can bet he’ll be in the sequel.
Speaking with SFX, director Jeff Rowe promised, “We’ll Dark Knight it,” referring to the fact that the primary villain of the Batman universe, The Joker, wasn’t properly introduced until sequel The Dark Knight, as Ra’s al Rhul and Scarecrow were the antagonists of Batman Begins. With such a tease from Rowe, one wonders if Shredder will have a cameo at the end of the movie in a similar way that Joker did.
Rowe expanded on the themes of the movie, which might hint to more reasoning for not featuring Shredder,...

Neeson made a surprising appearance in The Dark Knight Rises. The action star revisited his character Ra’s Al Ghul, which hadn’t been seen since his exit in Nolan’s Batman Begins. But Neeson’s return as the character was as much of a shock to him as it might have been for fans.
“[Nolan] takes it to another extreme — I didn’t know I was in the movie,” Neeson once told Hollywood(via The Playlist).

Fans of Stargate Sg-1 and its successors might have mixed feelings about the Roland Emmerich blockbuster that birthed the saga but given the importance of the Goa’uld System Lords to the overarching mythology it’s mind-boggling that... Ra wasn’t intended to be an alien.
The decision was made after Jaye Davidson’s performance threw the plan into jeopardy.
“He had a terrible substance abuse problem and was uninsurable,” explains Devlin.

Lance Reddick, a veteran character actor best known for key supporting roles in films like “John Wick” and “One Night in Miami” and TV series like “Fringe” and “The Wire,” has died at the age of 60.
The actor was found in his Studio City home Friday morning at around 9:30 a.m., according to media reports. The cause of death has, at this time, not been revealed, though it is alleged to be natural. His rep at Portrait PR confirmed the news to TheWrap.
The actor was currently promoting his fourth appearance as Charon, the loyal and beloved concierge at the Continental in “John Wick: Chapter 4” following the first “John Wick” in 2014 and the second and third installments in 2017 and 2019. That was just one high-profile property on which he put his unique stamp, offering a mix of subtle menace and above-it-all bemusement to all five seasons of “Fringe” and the later seasons of “Lost.

Nigrum Malleoleum est omnis divisa in partes tres.
Some Black Hammer books have numbers in the title: those are the main series. Before the book I’ll be complaining about today, there’s been Secret Origins , The Event , Age of Doom 1 , and Age of Doom 2 .
Some Black Hammer books have the words “Black Hammer” in the title, but no number: Streets of Spiral , the Justice League crossover . These are side stories about the whole team.
(Black Hammer ’45 is deeply confusing in this schema, but it actually fits in the next category. The “Black Hammer” referred to in the title is not the same as the other books, for maximum what-the-fuck-age.)
And some Black Hammer books are about other people in the same world, whose stories may intersect the main gang of mopey superheroes or may not obviously do so. (This is superhero comics: all stories intersect in the Grand Summer Crossover eventually.

This article contains spoilers for Gotham Knights.
Gotham Knights lets players patrol Gotham City as Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood. Why them and not Batman? Well, Gotham Knights‘ story and gameplay revolve around the fact that Batman is dead. Gamers everywhere seem to refuse to believe that Batman is really dead in Gotham Knights, but it’s true. Those expecting to play as Batman in Gotham Knights need not apply.
While Gotham Knights’ campaign largely revolves around several ongoing investigations, the cause of Batman’s death lingers in the back of its main characters’ minds. Who killed Batman and why? Well, the answer to that question is both remarkably simple and strangely complicated.
The game opens with an epic and climactic battle between Batman and the caped crusader’s long-standing rival, Ra’s al Ghul. An arrow is poking out of Batman’s torso, but he fights through the pain.
