Protesters attempted to shame journalists and politicos heading to the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday into skipping the event in solidarity with the many journalists who have lost their lives in Gaza since Israel began its war on the territory.
For some attendees, the protests on the way in may have been the only time they heard about those journalists killed in Gaza — unless they were listening very closely. The slain journalists in Gaza were mentioned one time on stage, according to transcripts of the event, when NBC News...

There’s some confusion flying circles around James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, with Egyptian-born entertainer Bassem Youseff saying he was fired from the project after showing support for Palestine during a Piers Morgan interview. According to Youseff, DC Studios offered him a role as a villain in the upcoming superhero spectacle. The official reason given for Youseff getting pulled from the cast list is a script change, but “the Jon Stewart of the Middle East” says the missed opportunity aligns with him showing support for Palestine in an interview.
However, a source close to the production says Youseff’s timeline of events needs to be corrected. The source says the decision to pass on Youseff’s involvement happened before the Piers Morgan interview.
“You’ve been very outspoken on behalf of Palestinian humanity and you lost a role in the new Superman movie and some other projects,” Dean Obeidallah of...

I feel a little awkward about what I’m about to do. It’s not something I’ve ever done before and, to be honest, it doesn’t come naturally. But what the heck, there’s a first time for everything, so here goes nothing.
I’m about to agree with the Academy.
Shocking, right? The run-up to this year’s Oscars was filled with more embarrassing missteps than a Rob Lowe-Snow White production number. The Academy infuriated rank-and-file members by pre-taping eight below-the-line awards to trim the ceremony (which still managed to run 20 minutes longer than last year). It snubbed Volodymyr Zelenskyy from an on-air appearance, despite Sean Penn’s threat to publicly smelt his Oscar if the Ukrainian president wasn’t allowed to speak (Zelenskyy ended up slumming it at the Grammys). Even the Academy’s brand-new 500 million movie museum — the one that co-host Wanda Sykes toured...

Joe Biden is making his first primetime address to the nation as President of the United States on Thursday, with the remarks set to begin at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt, meaning the broadcast networks will be breaking in to their regularly scheduled lineups to cover it.
Biden has plenty to discuss, with the main topic the one-year anniversary of the Covid pandemic this week. It comes as a massive $1.9 trillion relief package passed by Congress this week heads to his desk for signature, the vehicle for Biden’s major bet that the stimulus will help fuel an economy hobbled by the virus.
Meanwhile, he has accelerated his original goal of having enough vaccines for every American by the end of May, even as the U.S. death toll nears 530,000.

Bill O’Reilly received heavy backlash on Tuesday night when he questioned President Joe Biden’s statements on white supremacy.
“Mr. Biden says there is a ‘rise’ in white supremacy,” he tweeted during a CNN town hall with the new president. “Where?”
Immediately, social media users began piling on him, suggesting he is a white supremacist himself and bringing up his ouster from Fox News after numerous accusations of sexual misconduct.
“Mr. O’Reilly, only those who sit in the dark with each other can’t see each other,” wrote one reader.
Writer Mara Quint added that “it’s hard for fish to see water.”
Others posted an old clip of O’Reilly fretting that the New York Times wanted “to break down the white, Christian male power structure” that rules America, noting it exemplified the “rise” in white supremacy to which Biden referred.

George Lopez trended on Twitter Monday morning after commenting on an Instagram account that he would kill President Trump to secure a bounty mentioned during a eulogy at Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani’s funeral over the weekend.
News of the $80 million bounty — which hasn’t been confirmed as actually being sanctioned by the regime and instead was a comment from someone speaking at the funeral — was posted uncritically as fact to an Instagram account Sunday.
Lopez commented, “We’ll do it for half.”

Across the Country Co-directed by comedians Negin Farsad and Dean Obeidallah, "The Muslims Are Coming!" is a 2012 documentary that follows a group of Muslim-American comedians as they tour the United States to combat Islamaphobia. Last spring when bigoted anti-Muslim ads appeared in New York City subways and buses, Farsad and Obeidallah responded with humor. They created their own ad campaign intended to provoke discussion and get people laughing: "The Ugly Truth About Muslims: Muslims have great frittata recipes" read one subway poster. But in April, prompted by the outcry over the initial anti-Muslim ads, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Mta) banned political ads from buses and subways and categorized the humorous ad campaign as political. Vaguely Qualified Productions LLC, the production company behind "The Muslims Are Coming!," sued the Mta on June 25. On...

One part stand-up comedy concert film (think Kings of Comedy) to two parts social outreach activism, documentary The Muslims Are Coming! works somewhat better as the latter than the former. Arab-Americans describe The Dictator as 'modern-day minstrel show' that may increase prejudice towards their community
His clumsy camel-riding antics on the Croisette may have made Sacha Baron Cohen the toast of Cannes yesterday, but not everyone is happy with the British comic's portrayal of a fictional Middle Eastern autocrat in his new film The Dictator. The 40-year-old actor has come under fire from an Arab-American group which says his portrayal reinforces negative stereotypes about their community at a time when prejudice towards Us citizens of Middle Eastern origin has never been more prevalent.

Like comedians of comedy that have to pray five times a day, The Muslims Are Coming! is a new documentary featuring stand-up performances, personal diary moments, and talking heads attempting to show a different angle on what it means to be Muslim in America. Featuring luminaries like Jon Stewart, David Cross, Russell Simmons and Soledad O’Brien , it focuses specifically on the comedy of Negin Farsad (who directed) and Dean Obeidallah (who also directed). Judging from the trailer, the flick looks really lighthearted even as it tackles an unavoidable social responsibility. There’s no real way to make a documentary about Islam without taking on the All-American baggage that comes along with it. Fortunately, this doc seems content to battle fear with jokes. Check it out for yourself: You can also donate to their Kickstarter fund to help finish the film.

"Our challenge is that most people don't think of Arabs as funny or warm or capable of laughing at themselves," said standup comic Dean Obeidallah, who is a co-producer and co-founder of the New York Arab American Comedy Festival, whose seventh annual installment runs through May 9 at 3Ld Art & Technology Center in New York. Arab comics are not a new phenomenon—the late Danny Thomas was born Muzyad Yakhoob to Lebanese immigrants in Michigan—though their presence is not widely known of in the culture at large, said Obeidallah. Indeed, Obeidallah was a standup comic for close to seven years prior to the festival's inception. But in the wake of Sept. 11, he felt a sense of urgency, not simply on his own behalf but "to show Arabs to Americans in a different light." The festival has been a way to combat stereotypes and humanize the image of Arabs, as well...
