- She met her future husband Michael in November 1947 in London, where they had both come for the wedding of the future Queen Elizabeth II and Philip Mountbatten. They became engaged soon afterward. Michael returned to Romania, but was forced to abdicate by the communists in December 1947. He went into exile, and returned after communism ended; Anne's first visit to Romania was at Easter 1992.
- The couple got married in an Orthodox ceremony in Athens in 1948, after Pope Pius XII refused to give Anne dispensation to marry a non-Catholic (Michael is Romanian Orthodox).
