We caught up with horror screenwriter Patrick Melton (the man behind such frightful fare – along with cohort Marcus Dunstan – as the Feast series, Saw IV through 3D and The Collector) last week to chat about The Collection, Black Light, Piranha 3Dd, his new project Rise, and more.
“The Collection is in the final stages of post-production,” said the 36-year-old Illinois transplant of progress on the flick, which he co-wrote with director Marcus Dunstan and which has been snapped up for distribution by Liddell Entertainment, who distributed its predecessor The Collector. “We tested the film about a month or so ago in Chatsworth, California, and it tested wonderfully. Actually, it was the highest testing movie we've written. So we were very pleased with that. As a result the picture is locked, and we're putting on the spit and polish. Charlie Clouser of Saw fame is composing the score as we speak.

Alice Cooper to bring a little musical ambiance in Tim Burton's upcoming "Dark Shadows" remake. The veteran rocker, who just released a brand new album, "Welcome 2 My Nightmare," will be appearing in the "Alice in Wonderland" director's reboot of the gothic soap opera.
Cooper plays himself in the movie — which is set in 1972 — and he'll be performing the classic "No More Mr. Nice Guy" for his Collins party set. On rock, horror, and comedy, Cooper told the Los Angeles Times: "Tim Burton knows it so well. He’s one of a kind. He’s a kindred spirit."
There's a lot of horror happening at Santa Monica's American Film Market (Afm) this week — which means there's a lot of wheelin' and dealin' for new projects in the pipeline that want to get made. See what new terror tales are being previewed this week, and catch up on other horror bites past the break.

With the Saw series (finally) over, screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan are moving onto bigger and better projects. After scribing the last four Saw movies, Melton and Dunstan are currently working on an adaptation of their own novel, Black Light. [Deadline]
The novel, which they also wrote with Shock Festival creator Stephen Romano, revolves around private eye Buck Carlsbad who has unique gifts that help him solve supernatural cases. He’s obsessed with the killings of his mother and father and uses a black light to try and remember his past, as well as contact his parents. After being hired by a reclusive billionaire, pieces to his mysterious puzzle begin to fit together.
If we’ve learned anything from the final Saw movies, Melton and Dunstan are definitely interested in the gorier side of life and I think Black Light will fit in just perfectly. Although the final Saw films were basically panned by critics,...

At last, a horror movie that finally addresses just how terrifying it can be to turn on a black light in a motel room.
What’s that? That’s not what this is about at all? Oh well.
Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, writers of the last four movies in the Saw franchise, are set to adapt their novel Black Light, co-written by Stephen Romano, for the big screen. In addition, they are also doing rewrite work on the Guillermo del Toro giant aliens versus giant mechs film Pacific Rim. The news come courtesy of Deadline.
Based off the description from Mulholland Books, Black Light sounds pretty great:
If you have a supernatural problem that won’t go away, you need Buck Carlsbad: private eye, exorcist, and last resort.
Buck’s got a way with spirits that no one else can match. He was normal, once. Until Something Horrible killed...

Studios love pre-existing properties, especially when they come from minds associated with franchises that are as positively dripping with money as Saw was. To that end, it's no surprise that Black Light (book review here) is coming together for the silver screen. Per Deadline, "Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan, the team behind three of the Saw films, are currently doing production rewrite work on the Guillermo del Toro-directed tent pole Pacific Rim for Legendary Pictures. At the same time, they are plotting out the movie adaptation of Black Light, a new thriller novel they wrote with Stephen Romano that was just published by Mulholland Books. Theyve enlisted Michael De Luca to produce, and Wme is starting to put the package together." While this could all very well happen, it's only a packaging announcement. Expect momentum to pick up when a director is signed on.

The sickos behind the Saw franchise, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, are at it again in print form along with one of our favorite lunatics, Stephen Romano (Shock Festival), as this trio of terror have shined a Black Light on the horror scene.

"But the new wrinkle this time is that we're not concentrating on a villain, like Jigsaw or Freddy or whatever. Our character is a pulp hero by way of Stephen King or Clive Barker. The Texas Frightmare Weekend ran this past April 29th-May 1st in Dallas, and as Dread Central's only North Texas operative, it fell to me to bring you everything I could from the con. Unfortunately, for the past month I was held captive by an illicit donkey show south of the Border that's also a front for a Satanic drug cult. Just the other day I managed to escape and file this report. Yes, I'm fine now -- but please, don't anyone call me 'Sniffles' or I might suffer a serious relapse.
Texas Frightmare Weekend is one of the biggest horror conventions in Texas; yet, somehow I'd managed to miss it every year I've lived here. This year I wasn't going to let that happen, and my coverage started with live tweets all weekend long so feel free to add me at MrDarkDC on Twitter and read back to see what you missed!

Writer Stephen Romano gives us a first glimpse into the the supernatural detective novel he co-wrote with Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan.
I wasn't exactly certain what to expect when I first walked into the auditorium for a Q&A with writer Stephen Romano regarding his new book Black Light.
Co-written with Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, two Saw collaborators and the creators of The Collector, Stephen read us the first chapter of Black Light, an intriguing supernatural detective novel with stylish roots steeped in Dylan Dog (the comic) and Constantine (the comic).
Visual and gritty, Black Light follows the journey of its protagonist as he takes on spirits of all ilks and brings justice to the living. Afterwords, Stephen speaks about the process of writing with two of the biggest names in Horror film production, what he took away from the experience, and exactly what the publishing house thought of his original drafts.

It was released on the Orion VHS label in the mid-80′s (and on a cheap label under the title Female Space Invader) but had yet to appear as a domestic DVD release. At the time I wrote “Leave it to the wacky Italians, always quick to exploit a popular trend, to rip off George Lucas’s cash cow resulting in a film so spectacularly cheesy that over 30 years later it has actually aged better than the film it emulates.”. (read the entire column Here) I wrote this half in jest as a way to tweak my Star Wars-worshipping friends, but after watching the new Blu-Ray release from Shout! Factory, I’m starting to think I may have been on to something after all.
Shout Factory has done...

You know sometimes when you hear about a movie that's so absurd in its premise that you just can't resist talking about it and seeking it out? We get the feeling that for most of you (sans the easily offended) Race War will be one of those flicks!
Based upon a short film that won third place at the Alamo Drafthouse's Film Fest 2009, Race War was written and directed by Tom Martino and stars "a buncha jobbers you never heard of before". The film tells the story of "two black crack dealers (Baking Soda and his sidekick G.E.D. (Ghetto E'ry Day)) who notice that their profits aren't as fat as they used to be ... and it turns out the reason is because some white boys duhn came into the hood selling their smack. Only problem? That white boy shit is turnin' niggas into zombies! Can you believe that shit?...

There hasn’t been a lot to see or hear about Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor since footage from the once-aborted sequel appeared on a limited bonus disc in Anchor Bay’s DVD boxed set of the first three films nearly a decade ago. But now the completed feature is finally ready to see the light of day, and producer John Klyza sent along the details and the first look at a new poster by Stephen Romano.

Once, she was human.
Then, she was among the demon undead.

And she’s the most twisted, sadistic, demonic toy ever to claw its way out of Hell...
Cult Collectibles is proud to announce the upcoming release of the Demon Doll “Weird Wobbler” bobblehead style figure paying tribute to the cult film work of actress Geretta Geretta, famous for her portrayal of “Rosemary” in Lamberto Bava’s 1985 film Demons. On Tuesday, William Lustig's 'Maniac' arrived on DVD and Blu-ray in a new 30th Anniversary Edition, released by cult-friendly distributor Blue Underground. To commemorate the release, fellow theatrical and DVD distributor Grindhouse Releasing is spearheading a limited theatrical re-release of the film in theatres around the country, starting on October 29 and 30 with the Egyptian Theatre in Seattle. The film will subsequently screen in Los Angeles at the Nuart Theatre on November 5, with Lustig on hand to introduce the film and conduct a q&a with the audience.
Grindhouse Releasing successfully launched a roadshow series of screenings of Sam Raimi's 'The Evil Dead' in 2009, and according to company spokesman David Szulkin, who runs its theatrical division, that film has played in theaters every week of 2010 and continues to screen all over the country. I love Grindhouse Releasing! They've done several high profile theatrical re-releases for exploitation classics, and they're at it again! This fall will see a limited theatrical release of Bill Lustig's sleaze classic Maniac in several cities across the country, in conjunction with Blue Underground's Blu-ray release of the film. This marks a rare chance to witness Joe Spinell's classic and disturbing performance as the title character, I wouldn't miss it if I were you! I hope it makes its way to my town, that's for sure. Find the details below:
Maniac stars Joe Spinell (Rocky, The Godfather, Taxi Driver) as Frank Zito, a deeply disturbed man haunted by the traumas of unspeakable childhood abuse. When these horrific memories begin to scream inside his mind, Frank prowls the seedy streets of New York City to stalk and slaughter innocent young women. Even as he begins a relationship...

With the holiday season just around the corner (can you believe it?), there's one gift that everyone should give: a tiny replica of a horny militant serial-killing puppet who's so naughty he's nice!
From the Press Release
Cult Collectibles is proud to announce the release of its first "Weird Wobbler" bobblehead style figure from one of the most outrageous underground films ever made: Black Devil Doll!
The 2008 film is the story of an executed Black militant who is reincarnated into a vicious ventriloquist’s puppet, causing endless mayhem and murder (to put it mildly). Widely hailed by cult film aficionados and simultaneously condemned for its overt (yet completely tongue-in-cheek) offensiveness, Art Ettinger of Ultra Violent magazine stated, "Black Devil Doll is a triumph, seamlessly blending crass un-pc humor with cerebral artistry. The Lewis Brothers deliver one of the most original exploitation films of the new millennium, a singularly unique mix of brain and brawn.

Last year the cult hit "Black Devil Doll" took the horror world by storm due to brothers Shawn Lewis and Jonathan Lewis. Their next film looks to take things up another notch with the crazy sounding flick, "Bottomfeeder"...
Below is a description of the film from our friends at Horror Squad,
Featuring a script by Masters of Horror writer Stephen Romano and a leading performance from Joe Pilato -- better known as Capt. Rhodes from Romero's "Day of the Dead" -- the project looks to be off to an auspicious start.
Pilato will play Detective Joe Angell, a bad cop who thought he'd seen everything until he catches a case involving a mutated man/fish who's wandered out of the toxic sludge in a California river and is on the prowl for nubile young women (I love this already...). That's just one of the detective's problems though, as Angell --...

Just last week we brought you the news that the creative team behind Black Devil Doll, the Lewis Brothers, have a new monster flick on the horizon called Bottomfeeder. Now just days later we have the skinny on when you can see the very first clip and the official one-sheet debut featuring artwork by long-time Lewis Brothers collaborator Stephen Romano, who also wrote the film's screenplay.
Fans can see an exclusive clip from the film starring Captain Rhodes himself, Joe Pilato, at this weekend's Creation Weekend of Horrors!
Keep an eye on the newly launched official Bottomfeeder website for more goodies to come.
Synopsis
Lieutenant Joe Angell is a bad cop who's seen it all ... but he's never seen anything like the hideous monstrosity that shambles out of a dark California river with a taste for blood on the hunt for nubile female victims. It's a monster spawned of toxic waste and depraved humanity,...

A couple of flicks we've been talking about for quite some time are finally hitting store shelves this week including the animated Dante's Inferno, the long-awaited Dead Tone (formerly known as 7eventy 5ive) from directors Brian Hooks and Deon Taylor, and the three-disc exploitation extravaganza known as Shock Festival from Stephen Romano (with a couple of commentaries from our own Uncle Creepy).
Rounding out the list are two volumes of Bad Girls of Film Noir, some unknown quantities such as 9 Lives of Mara and Butchered, the provocative and stylized Bronson, a Blu-ray release of Running Man, and the 1999 "Masterpiece Mystery" thriller series Second Sight starring Clive Owen. Okay, technically those last two aren't straight horror, but with all the Arnold and Clive fans we have on the site, I figured enough people would want to know about them that they warranted inclusion.

Ever since the spot-on mock trailers in Rodriguez and Tarantino’s Grindhouse, companies have been cashing in, releasing collections of whatever forgotten theatrical trailers they can get their hands on.
First off, I highly doubt that anyone out there is going to buy anything from a company called Cheezy Flicks. I doubt even more that anyone would even pick up a DVD titled Cheezy Horror, and if you’re like me, the tagline, “Some of the Cheesiest Horror Trailers of All Time,” will bury this before you even press play. Since I was bored, I counted the word “Cheesy” appears 14 times in various derivatives on the packaging, a word which makes the bile rise in the back of my throat.
Despite all that, there are some fun trailers here that, unless you’re a decade older than me, you’ve never seen before, ranging from Vincent Price’s The Tingler to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

We first told you about Slime City Massacre, the follow up to Greg Lamberson's 1988 cult flick Slime City here and here. Today we have a look at the final poster for the film, along with some news on the films' release. The poster was designed by Stephen Romano, author of the grindhouse book Shock Festival (There's also a Shock Festival trailer compilation / companion DVD out now). Romano also contributed 15 original paintings for Slime City Massacre's title sequence. The poster art features Slime City Massacre stars Debbie Rochon, Jennifer Bihl, Lee Perkins and Kealan Patrick Burke, and 'dramatizes the film's post apocalyptic landscape'. Slime City Massacre will...

The more we see of director Gregory Lamberson's Slime City Massacre, the more we dig its sleazy, retro vibe. And along those lines, the filmmakers have released the new official poster for the film, which was created by the sleaziest, most retro guy we know: Stephen Romano!
Lamberson described the one-sheet as follows: "It has a blend of 70's sci-fi/80's horror that the film celebrates." In addition, Romano created 15 paintings that will be used in the film's opening title sequence.
You may recall that Romano is the man behind Shock Festival, a novel that pays homage to the schlock and B-movies genre by creating a history of visuals and stories about films that only exist in the depths of his massive imagination. In addition, February 9, 2010, will see the release of a multi-volume DVD collection (also titled Shock Festival) of rarities Romano dug up with some friends that not...
