Comcast customers looking to save a few bucks on their streaming services are in luck.
The company is introducing a streaming bundle next week that combines three of the major streamers — Netflix, Apple TV+ and Peacock — for $15 per month, TVLine has learned. Dubbed Xfinity StreamSaver, the bundle will be available to new and existing Xfinity Internet and TV customers. (Peacock is part of the corporate family, since it’s the streaming service for Comcast’s NBCUniversal.)

Direct-to-consumer revenue is up 70% year-over-year for Warner Bros. Discovery, and the ascendence of the ad tier of Max is a big reason why.
By now, even those who don’t follow big media companies closely likely know that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is a man singularly focused on the bottom line. Zaslav’s two-year tenure as head of Wbd has been marked by numerous periods of frugality from the company, which is hardly surprising considering the 2022 merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery created a firm with more than $40 billion of debt. Content cuts became a part of life for the company’s streaming service that was known as HBO Max when Zaslav took over, and viewers lost access to everything from “Westworld” to episodes of “Sesame Street” as the company tried to slash its way to better financial standing. HBO Max first launched its ad-supported plan in 2021, but the...

Exclusive: After corporate maneuvers, a global pandemic and labor unrest, the wheels of streaming commerce are finally starting to turn for Max.
The Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service introduced an ad tier in 2021, when it was known as HBO Max and owned by AT&T’s WarnerMedia, only to re-approach the ad business in earnest in early 2023. About a year into the effort and the rebrand to Max, there are clear signs of traction, with the service due to be center stage Wednesday at the company’s upfront presentation to ad buyers in New York.
“We’re total babies with this part of the business,” Jb Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games, enthused to Deadline in an interview. “But we’re finding that we’re very well-positioned in the marketplace when you look at streaming prices going up and consumer sensitivity to price.” Internationally, he noted, Max’s...

Netflix used to say its goal was to become HBO faster than HBO could become Netflix.
Well, Netflix succeeded on that front. Now Warner Bros. Discovery — in partnership with Disney and others — is looking to recomposite a cable TV-style streaming bundle to gain greater scale before Netflix gets even farther ahead of legacy media companies.
David Zaslav, Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO, speaking on the company’s Q1 earnings call Thursday, described streaming as “a generational disruption” to the industry. Wbd’s just-announced deal with Disney to introduce a three-way bundle comprising Max, Disney+ and Hulu starting this summer in the U.S. is emblematic of a “restructuring of how people view content,” he said.
“It does feel like this is a moment, a moment in terms of what the next year two years will bring,” Zaslav said. “You know I said a while back that this is a generational disruption.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said the forthcoming bundle of Wbd’s Max and Disney’s Hulu and Disney+, marks a “moment” for programmers in the streaming wars.
“It does feel like this is a moment,” Zaslav said, “in terms of what the next year, two years, will bring.” A “restructuring” is under way in streaming, he added, and “the business will look a lot different in two to three years. It will be a lot better for consumers.”
Jb Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games at Wbd, said the new bundle would be an “anchor tenant” in most streaming households.
The execs delivered the remarks during the company’s first-quarter earnings call with Wall Street analysts. Wbd came up short of forecasts in the quarter due to comparisons with the 2023 period and a flattening of streaming revenue.

Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery are set to launch a new streaming bundle this summer that will combine the Disney+, Hulu, and Max streaming services. Specific pricing is still to be determined, but there will be both ad-free and ad-supported options of the bundle.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav on Thursday argued the future of his studio and the wider TV streaming landscape will be driven by the increased packaging and marketing of streaming products together.
“As we look at what happens ahead, there likely will be a restructuring of how people view content. And there’s a lot of irrationality in the market that’s getting shaken out, in terms of the amount of money spent. We said early on, it’s not how much, it’s how good, and that’s what we’re focusing on. And ultimately, the business will look very different in two to three years,” Zaslav told analysts during a morning call as rival streamers increasingly move to bundle their offerings together.

As the streaming wars continue, a new bundle has entered the fray: On Wednesday, May 8th, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery announced plans to team up for a combined package of services including Max, Disney+, and Hulu.
Because both platforms are owned by the same company, Disney+ and Hulu have been available as a bundle for some time. However, the inclusion of Max marks a cross-corporation collaboration; the new offering will be available in Summer 2024, and will include both ad-supported and ad-free plans.
While this marks relatively unprecedented cooperation in the streaming space between two of Hollywood’s biggest players, Wbd and Disney do have one business practice in common: Both companies have recently removed dozens of titles from their respective services in order to receive tax breaks.
“This new offering delivers for consumers the greatest collection of entertainment for the best value in streaming, and will help drive incremental subscribers and much stronger retention,...

In an interesting twist, Disney is teaming up with Warner Bros. Discovery for a new bundle that will include Disney+, Hulu, and Max. I guess it shouldn’t be surprising since Disney is already teaming up with Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox for a new sports streaming bundle with ESPN, but I honestly did not expect this.
The new streaming bundle is set to be made available this summer but we don’t have a price for it yet. Nor is there an announced launch date.
Customers will be able to purchase the new plan on any of the three streaming platforms. The companies are calling it “the best value in entertainment and an unprecedented selection of content from the biggest and most beloved brands in entertainment, including ABC, CNN, DC, Discovery, Disney, Food Network, FX, HBO, HGTV, Hulu, Marvel, Pixar, Searchlight, Warner Bros. and many more.”

In an unprecedented collaboration, Disney and Warner Bros Discovery will launch a streaming bundle of Disney+, Hulu and Max this summer.

It will be available for purchase on any of the platforms’ websites as ad-free and ad-supported. No name or price point was provided.
Industry observers said the move was designed to motivate customers to stay and not cancel their services.
It comes as Netflix continues to pull away as the leading platform in the streaming wars.

Starting this summer, two media giants are teaming up for the biggest streaming bundle yet. You’ll be able to subscribe to a discounted bundle that includes Disney+, Hulu, and Max. The price has not yet been announced. Subscribers can choose ad-supported or ad-free bundles.

Currently, users have the option of bundling Disney+ with Hulu and/or ESPN+. Subscribers to Hulu Live TV get all three services at a significant discount. The two companies are joining Fox to offer a sports-focused joint venture later this year, so a team-up is not entirely unprecedented. But this bundle seems to take aim at Netflix, which doesn’t offer much by way of sports.

Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery are breaking ground in streaming with a bundled offering featuring Disney+, Hulu and Max.
The companies are aiming to launch the bundle this summer. The exact launch date and the price point have not yet been announced, but plans call for both ad-free and ad-supported versions to be available.
The move creates the first cross-company partnership for any of the top-tier services to come to market as the race to catch up with Netflix began in earnest about five years ago. It follows years of speculation and public musings by top executives about when bundling across the industry might reduce friction and begin to make streaming more cost-efficient for programmers and consumers alike. Pay-tv operators long served as third-party bundlers in the cable age, but while distribution deals with the likes of Roku and Amazon are key to any streaming service gaining traction, it’s...

David Zaslav saw his total compensation package last year jump by more than $10 million to $49.7 million in 2023 — with Warner Bros. Discovery awarding him a base salary of $3 million, plus $23 million in stock awards, and non-equity incentive plan compensation (a cash bonus) of $22 million.
It’s the second rather princely CEO package in as many days in an industry known for them as Netflix yesterday unveiled a similarly sized package co-ceo Ted Sarandos.
Zaslav, however, has for years been the poster child of high CEO pay, with a hard to swallow 2021 package of nearly $247 million, swelled by $203 million worth of option awards. That number — and the others — were plastered on posters last spring as the writers guild’ labor talks got heated. CEO pay remained a rallying cry. It might again with a new set of labor talks underway and an overall contraction in the industry that’s causing pain above and below the line.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav saw the value of his 2023 compensation package rise to $49.7 million, compared with $39.3 million in 2022 when the Discovery-WarnerMedia merger had closed.
The entertainment conglomerate disclosed latest pay details for its top executives in a regulatory filing.
Zaslav’s 2023 pay consisted of a $3 million salary, and more than $23 million in stock awards, as well as $22 million in non-equity incentive compensation and $1.6 million in other compensation, including security costs. The rise in compensation was due in part to a decision by Wbd to change its executive compensation plan to focus on cash flow, rather than stock price. In 2023 Wbd’s free cashflow rose in part due to the Hollywood strikes, which shut down productions for months.
In 2021, then-Discovery CEO Zaslav had received a pay package worth $246.6 million, a big jump from $37.7 million in 2020 and $45.8 million in 2019. That was driven by a May 2021 employment agreement that was...

Zaslav’s compensation totaled $39.3 million in 2022, after he received an astonishing $246.6 million (which included $203 million in stock-option grants) in 2021.
For 2023, Zaslav had a base salary of $3 million, stock awards valued at $23.1 million, a cash bonus of $22 million and $1.6 million in other compensation.
Other Wbd senior execs also saw double-digit pay hikes in 2023. CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels earned $17.1 million (up 26%); chief revenue and strategy officer Bruce Campbell, $18.3 million (up 33%); Jb Perrette, president/CEO of global streaming and games, $20.1 million (up 43%); and president of international Gerhard Zeiler, $13.3 million (up 30%).
Cash bonuses and stock awards for Zaslav and Wbd’s other named executive officers are tied to free cash flow targets.

Lille, France — The big news at Series Mania was Warner Bros. Discovery’s European roll-out timeline for Max, announced Thursday at the climax of the Series Mania’s Lille Dialogues.
The most keenly anticipated session was nearly Series Mania’ Forum first: a Netflix showcase hosted by a confident Larry Tanz who significantly proved the only goal streamer exec to drill down on volume commitment.
Nobody was saying at Series Mania the industry is in an easy place. But signs at this year’s edition that, at least in Europe, business may be turning a corner, or at least has the corner in sight. The newest normal will be a far cry from the peak TV of old, however.
Final attendance soared to 4,200 at the Forum, an all-time record. That’s hardly surprising. “You have all the French broadcasters there, a lot of European public broadcasters, a few Scandinavian commercial channels and some platforms.

Nicolas de Tavernost, the outgoing boss of M6, did not hold back today during what will likely be his last on-stage appearance after a near-40-year career with The Traitors France network.
De Tavernost used his Series Mania keynote to slam the French competition laws that prevented M6’s merger with TF1, while urging “collective measures” to improve local streamers in France.
Addressing the merger around 18 months after it collapsed due to regulators, de Tavernost said the law restricting consolidation in France is “a bit absurd.”
“When you see mergers in other parts of the world and here in France we won’t be able to do it because we are restricted by laws it is frustrating,” he added. “I am totally in favor of consolidation but it hasn’t so far been possible with TF1.”

Max will become the latest streamer to cut down on password sharing, as Warner Bros. Discovery plans to start its crackdown in late 2024 into 2025.

Discovery, announced plans to limit password sharing, citing Netflix’s crackdown, which he said was “implemented extremely successfully.” All of this is part of Wbd’s several-part plan to build streaming profits.
“We’re going to be doing that starting later this year and into ‘25, which is another growth opportunity for us,” Perette said of the password-sharing crackdown.
Asked how big of a revenue opportunity the password-sharing crackdown represents, Perette said it’s “a meaningful opportunity,” but was cautious on “overselling it” given given the comparison of Netflix’s 260 million subscribers and longer history to Max’s 97.7 million.

Warner Bros. Discovery has jumped on the password-sharing crackdown bandwagon, with a top exec saying Max will begin enforcing restrictions on subscribers sharing accounts outside their household starting this year — following the trail blazed by Netflix, which was more recently joined by Disney.
J.B. Perrette, president/CEO of global streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery, announced the coming crackdown on Max password sharing this week at the 2024 Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom conference.
Regarding cracking down on password sharing, Perrette commented that “obviously Netflix has implemented [that] extremely successfully. We’re going to be doing that starting later this year and into ’25, which is another growth opportunity for us.”
Perrette declined to quantify the upside he expects from the move, saying “I’m conscious of not overselling it.” Max is not at the same scale as Netflix, he added, “but we think relative the scale of our business it’s a meaningful opportunity.

Still, IPs worth over $1 billion apiece including DC, Mortal Kombat, and Game of Thrones are more than enough to absorb the blow

Live service games have had a meteoric rise in the past few years. The concept of a game that can remain on the market for years without needing to be replaced by sequels, all while bringing in a continuous stream of revenue from players logging on every day, would have any publisher salivating.
And to no one’s surprise, a large portion of publishers have pivoted to live service. Everyone wants the next Fortnite or Warzone, so they’re willing to try everything and see what sticks. Historically singleplayer publishers are now exploring live service as well, such as PlayStation, Square Enix, and most recently, Warner Bros. Games.

Season 2 of House of the Dragon will premiere on HBO/Max in June, said Jb Perrette, head of global streaming & games for Warner Bros. Discovery.
Speaking at a media conference Q&a today, he said it’s one of a handful of HBO tentpole series set to contribute to a turnaround at the media giant after a soft period for film and television due in part to the Hollywood strikes last year.
He didn’t give a specific premiere date. HBO and Max content chief Casey Bloys last said in November that the season would be coming in early summer. Warner Bros. Discover CEO David Zaslav confirmed during the February 23 earnings call that Season 2 would premiere in Q2.

House of the Dragon fans have been anxiously awaiting word on the release of season 2 of the fantasy series. It was previously reported that the series would debut sometime this summer, but that date has just been narrowed down a little more.
Warner Bros. Discovery streaming and gaming chief J.B. Perrette revealed (via Variety) that House of the Dragon season 2 will premiere on HBO in June but didn’t specify an exact date. The first season was a surprisingly big success for HBO, and I only say “surprisingly” because I honestly wasn’t sure if fans would be willing to return to Westeros after the disappointment following the Games of Thrones finale. Will the second season be able to keep the momentum going? HBO certainly hopes so, as they’re said to be actively developing seasons 3 and 4 of the series.
The news of the development of additional seasons comes from...

Warner Bros. Discovery streaming and gaming chief J.B. Perrette revealed the launch month for the second season of the “Game of Thrones” spinoff during an interview at Morgan Stanley’s Technology, Media and Telecom conference Monday.
While the exec did not specify the date of the “House of the Dragon” Season 2 premiere, this is the most information that has been revealed about the release window to date, with HBO chief Casey Bloys teasing an “early summer” date back in November, and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav saying “next quarter” on the company’s Q4 earnings call Feb. 23.
Based on author George R.R. Martin’s “Game of Thrones” book “Fire & Blood,” “House of the Dragon” follows the Targaryen dynasty in the fictional continent of Westeros. It takes place nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and about...

Sitting in Pat McAfee’s studio in Indianapolis Feb. 14, NBA commissioner Adam Silver engaged in an extended conversation about the state of streaming sports.
McAfee, whose show is simulcast on ESPN, brought up the recently-announced joint venture between Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery seems like a game-changing development. “We knew nothing about until it got announced,” McAfee said.
“Neither did I,” Silver responded dryly.
Indeed, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the major sports leagues were all caught off guard by the announcement of the joint venture, though executives at the media companies endeavored to reach out and loop them in a few hours before it was revealed. The same is true of the cable and satellite companies that pay to distribute ESPN, TNT, TBS and Fox.
One of those distributors, FuboTV, would even sue to block the Jv from launching.

In his first public comments about a planned sports streaming joint venture with Disney and Fox, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said it will increase the companies’ reach and not add to their cord-cutting woes.
The Jv partners “have a very rich target” of 60 million-plus sports fans who are not in the pay-tv ecosystem, Zaslav said during Wbd’s fourth-quarter earnings call. “We’ll be able to go after those we are missing.”
The new service, whose name, pricing and launch date have not been announced, is “very modern,” Zaslav added, and will reduce friction in the viewing experience. “Today, when people are thinking, ‘What channel should I watch? What channel is my sport on?’ You’ll be able to go to this new product, this new app-based product, and if you watch the baseball playoffs, you’ll watch all of them and you won’t be thinking, ‘What channel is it on?...
