“Barbie” is a box office smash, along with its acclaim from critics and audiences alike. If you follow the social media chatter and the general feeling from most pundits, it could be a viable awards contender for Warner Bros. One category being debated is where the screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach would be able to compete — whether in original or adapted screenplay. The answer lies in how the WGA classifies it and whether the Academy could or would overrule that choice.
Variety confirms there are ongoing conversations with strategists and Warner Bros regarding where “Barbie” would compete at next year’s ceremony.
On the title cards, it reads “Based on ‘Barbie’ by Mattel,” which is, of course, a toy company. At the same time, there have been multiple CGI films and TV series featuring the fashion doll since its debut in the late 1980s (42 to be precise). This...

It largely speaks to how different the landscape of Hollywood used to be compared to our present that even though Harrison Ford has been immortalized in two of pop culture's biggest Blockbuster franchises, he still has had a long and fulfilling career outside of those bubbles. Maybe it's the transition into IP-driven pictures and cinematic universes, but where most actors these days often find themselves stuck typecast, Ford thrived beyond his time as Han Solo and Indiana Jones. Outside of being Spielberg and Lucas's collaborator, he's worked with many prolific directors from Ridley Scott, Peter Weir, Francis Ford Coppola, and Mike Nichols.
Though he oozes expressive, rugged charm that we tend to associate with our greatest movie stars, one thing Ford doesn't have a lot of is Academy recognition. In fact, he's been nominated for Best Actor only once for his performance in 1985's "Witness," so there's a surprising lack...

Still with a keen eye for a meaty political drama, George Clooney has picked up the film rights to FBI man Joe Navarro's book Three Minutes To Doomsday. Smokehouse Pictures, which Clooney runs with Grant Heslov, announced the deal over the weekend.Navarro is a specialist in non-verbal communication and body language, the author of previous works like What Every Body Is Saying and Louder Than Words. He was an FBI agent for 25 years, focusing his talents on counterintelligence and behavioural assessment and helping to found the Bureau's Behavioural Analysis programme. Three Minutes To Doomsday covers his operations during the Cold War.The book is not yet published - although it's ready to go with Simon & Schuster - and it's very early days for the film yet. There's no screenwriter yet announced as in place, and no information about Clooney's specific potential roles on either side of the camera. As an interesting footnote though,...

Abrams Artists Agency is pleased to announce that George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures has acquired the film rights for Joe Navarro’s Three Minutes to Doomsday. The North American rights for the book were recently acquired by Scribner, a division of Simon & Schuster. As the FBI’s leading body language expert, Joe Navarro was sent to track down Rod Ramsey to report on his knowledge or association with Clyde Lee Conrad. It all started with a trembling cigarette: when Navarro asked Ramsay about Conrad, his cigarette shook. Navarro’s expertise enabled him to decipher the meaning behind Ramsay’s tic. Noticing this miniscule movement led him to a series of interviews in an increasingly complex relationship that would uncover one escalating revelation after another, until he eventually uncovered the most dangerous security breach in Us history. Along the way Navarro had to develop Ramsay’s trust, engage...

If you had Damien Chazelle's "Whiplash" chalked up for a Best Original Screenplay nomination, hold your horses. Despite the demonstrable fact that Chazelle directed a short film of the same name that was merely a scene taken from the already-written feature in order to raise funds for said feature, the Academy has apparently deemed it an adapted screenplay. The news comes from Grantland writer Mark Harris, who saw the film chalked up as an eligible contender in the adapted category on an e-ballot rather than original. "There are five slots," Harris told me in a quick exchange. "You list them preferentially. In the blank next to each slot, there's a click-option to go to the 'reminder list' of eligible films for that category. And there was 'Whiplash' [in adapted]." It's too late to reach out for any sort of comment from the Academy or WGA on this, alas. Though...

Author and former CIA case officer Robert Baer shared some troubling information with CNN’s audience on Friday as President Barack Obama’s administration makes the case for intervention in the Syrian civil war. He said that he spoke with officials inside Syria who told him that Bashar al-Assad’s regime is “panicking” and will “act irrationally” if a Western attack appears to have the objective of toppling his regime.

Tamerlan had a prior assault and battery charge, years before he planned the Boston Marathon bombing on April 15. See his 2009 mugshot!
Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the men responsible for the Boston Marathon bombing, was arrested in 2009 for hitting his then-girlfriend, Nadine Ascencao, after an argument about another woman. This photo proves that Tamerlan’s violent streak started years before the horrific explosions on April 15.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s Mugshot & Violent Past
In July 2009, Tamerlan was arrested for slapping an ex-girlfriend, according to court records. His ex was “crying hysterically” and called 911 to report that she was “beat up by her boyfriend,” Cambridge Police Officer Angela Pereira wrote in the arrest report. Tamerlan told police that his ex “was yelling at him because of another girl (presumably future wife Katherine Russell).” Tsarnaev stated at the time, “Yes, I slapped her.” He said that he struck the left side of her face.

A female’s DNA was allegedly found on at least one of the bombs that exploded during Boston’s Marathon on April 15. Did it come from Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s widow, Katherine Russell?
In a strange turn of events, FBI agents reportedly visited the family home of Boston Marathon bomber widow Katherine Russell on April 29 after they allegedly found female DNA on at least one of the bombs. There may be no connection at all, but the new DNA finding could potentially back up former CIA Operative Robert Baer’s theory that the suspects, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Katherine’s husband Tamerlan Tsarnaev, didn’t act alone.

Jason Clarke is one of the most talked-about actors in Hollywood right now -- you just might not realize it yet. Clarke gives a standout performance in "Zero Dark Thirty" as Dan, a CIA intelligence officer who specializes in "enhanced" interrogations. If that description raises the controversy antenna, it's no accident: All of those articles about whether or not Kathryn Bigelow's latest film supports torture discuss Clarke's opening moments on screen, where his character waterboards a prisoner named Ammar (Reda Kateb) in an effort to discover information about the next terrorist attack, as well as the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden.
That debate aside, "Zero Dark Thirty" caps a big year for Clarke. He also starred in "Lawless" (opposite his "Zero Dark Thirty" co-star Jessica Chastain) and filmed a pair of highly anticipated 2013 releases: "The Great Gatsby" (with Leonardo DiCaprio) and "White House Down" (with Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum). Los Angeles — A couple of weeks ago, we looked back on the eclectic career of Brad Pitt, and marveled at the intelligence of his choices as well as his instinct to shun his movie-star persona while still giving the people what they want.

Chicago – After 2010, the Golden Globes should officially retire the category of “Best Musical or Comedy” for two reasons: 1. A staggeringly small percentage of American films annually fall under the category of “musical,” and 2. This year’s nominees were so embarrassingly awful that they instantly drained the category of any future credibility.
With the obvious exception of the family drama “The Kids Are All Right,” none of the nominated pictures were the least bit deserving of a Best Picture nod. Yet unlike “The Tourist,” “Burlesque” and (arguably) “Alice in Wonderland,” “Red” is the only nominee destined to spawn an ill-advised franchise. A sequel to “Red” would be wholly unnecessary, since the original film could easily function as its own sequel, remake and TV spin-off.
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0

Intense & claustrophobic, the film pulls you in right from the start. Ryan Reynolds does an astounding job, giving what I believe to be the performance of his career. While the whole film takes place inside of a coffin, it remains thrilling & exciting to watch the entire time.
The film has a definite Hitchcockian feel to it, and much like it has been said before by other people who have watched the film, Rodrigo Cortés has made a film this is just as astounding as Alfred Hitchcok would have conceived, had he been given this script while he was alive.
I say that this film is definitely worth a viewing, especially if you like Ryan Reynolds. His fantastic acting skills are on full display for you during each and every minute of the picture. It’s a shame he wasn’t nominated for any acting awards for this film, because I believe he earned one.

The Film:
In a perfect world, we would honor the old-timers, show them respect, listen to their stories. But we’re a fast moving culture. A generation that demand our apps to be fast and our lives faster. We don’t got the time to age. In Hollywood, each actor and actress has an expiration date. Red, based on the DC Comics graphic novel by Warren Ellis, uses this as subtext, that’s shrink-wrapped over its action genre conventions. Red is an action movie that wasn’t allowed to be released in the summer, a great time to simply entertain the popcorn munchers. But like all good things, you can’t put a time table on it, and what Summit Entertainment has on its non-Twilight hands, is an action classic.

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. Enter The Void Enter the Void is unlike anything I have ever seen or experienced. It's a one-of-a-kind work of stunning ambition and passion—a psychedelic trip through one man's drug-fueled perception of his life, his death, his afterlife, and his rebirth. This is not a film to be taken lightly. From its dizzying, techno-charged opening credits onward, it assaults the senses, immersing you (whether you like it or not) into a soulless abyss of life-altering despair, vacuous sex, vibrant neon cityscapes, and obsessive existential desires. For many, it will be a confounding, interminable bore, so indulgent in its own sensual kineticism that it fails to conjure up a satisfying, coherent narrative. Such a reaction is understandable,...

When you were a kid did you ever fantasize that your dad or grandpa might secretly be a retired spy? Well luckily for you we now have the movie “Red” (on DVD & Bly-ray today), which is exactly what transpired in your 9-year-old brain while hanging upside down from the playground monkey bars.
The title stands for “retired, extremely dangerous,” and refers specifically to former black ops agent Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), who is having some difficulty adapting to his newfound life of leisure after an action-packed career as a CIA spook.
Out of the blue, Frank finds himself the target of a CIA wet team, which he dispatches with ease, and before you can say “yippee ki-yay” he hauls ass to Kansas City to abduct/protect Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker), the pension office worker he has a thing for.
To get to the bottom of these dirty government shenanigans, Willis enlists...

Terrorism is one of the world’s greatest threats. Every day, terrorists cause death and destruction in countries all over the planet and one of their most used forms of weaponry is the car bomb. In the documentary Car Bomb, we learn about the origin and history of this deadly weapon. Ex-cia agent and author Robert Baer hosts this intriguing look at terrorism’s most infamous tactic. Mr. Baer was actually portrayed by George Clooney in the film Syriana and he is a wealth of knowledge, an experienced individual who was stationed in the Middle East.
The first known car bomb was actually a horse-drawn wagon filled with dynamite which detonated in Wall Street on September 16, 1920. Since then this method of terrorism has been used all throughout the world, from the Middle East to Oklahoma City. Many have used this form of destruction in a variety of ways but the...

Paths Of Glory (Criterion) Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 antiwar classic put him on the map as a major filmmaker. Kirk Douglas stars in a true story about a French officer in Ww I who locks horns with the military’s top brass after his men are court-martialed for failing to carry out an obvious suicide mission. A perfect film, across the board, with fine support from George Macready as one of the most despicable martinet’s ever captured on film, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou, all oily charm as a conniving General. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Audio commentary by critic Gary Giddins; Excerpt from 1966 audio interview with Kubrick; 1979 interview with Douglas; New interviews with Jan Harlan, Christiane Kubrick, and producer James B. Last month at Fantastic Fest 2010, I sat down with a Karl Urban at a table of journalists to discuss this weekend’s Red, an entertaining adaptation of Warren Ellis’ graphic novel series with an all-star cast including Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman, Mary-Louise Parker, Ernest Borgnine, Richard Dreyfuss, and of course Urban.
We talked about what it was like working with such a great cast, preparing for his brutal fight scene with Willis, the status of his upcoming roles in the Judge Dredd remake and the next Star Trek, and Mirren’s hottness. Just imagine all his answers with a thick Kiwi accent.
How’d everything go last night? (referring to the public screening at Fantastic Fest)
Urban: It was great. It was a lot of fun. It was the first time I had seen the movie, and I couldn’t think of a better way to see it,...

Movies based on or inspired by real life events are commonplace, but every once in awhile one comes along that taps into something so current it hits a raw nerve with the public. This week sees the release of such a film, David Fincher's "The Social Network," based around the founding of the Facebook website, which -- at over 500 million users and counting -- is dominating human interaction the way arguably no device has since the telephone.
Currently at the height of its popularity, Facebook has been an accelerator pad for public discourse, and Fincher's film and its depiction of founder Mark Zuckerberg (the world's youngest billionaire) is less a biopic than a document of history still being written. Whether Zuckerberg and his website will still have the sway it has today five years from now is anybody's guess, but we're going to take a...

Karl Urban is one of those cool actors who seems to get all of the cool jobs. From demon hunting in Doom to going where no one has gone before, he's one of the most well liked, and respected actors in the business. He's also an enormous nerd with a light saber collection. In this interview for Red, Karl talks about his character, punching Bruce Willis in the face, shooting guns, his work on “Priest” and more Star Trek sequels as Red week wraps up here at Latinoreview. When you got on this project, who was attached when you first signed on? Urban: When I was attached, it was Bruce, Mlp, Morgan…who else? Helen, Ernie Borgnine, and I think Malkovich came on just after myself. So when you first heard about the cast, were you immediately like, “Yeah, this sounds real good”? Urban: Yeah. I mean it is extraordinary.

The titular gate is part of Jerusalem's old city walls, originally built by Suleiman The Magnificent. We've got fingers crossed Damascus Gate will deliver a suitably byzantine thriller, following in the footsteps of the two recent book adaptations to delve into the murky world of Middle Eastern politics, ex-cia agent Bob Baer's See No Evil (Syriana) and Washington Post journo Rajiv Chandrasekaran's Imperial Life In The Emerald City (the upcoming Green Zone...

The filmmakers behind George Clooney's Oscar-winning movie Syriana denied the script plagiarized work by screenwriter Stephanie Vergniault in a Paris, France court on Monday. Vergniault claims the oil thriller, written and directed by Stephen Gaghan, is based on her script Oversight, which she wrote between 1997 and 2002. Clooney picked up an Academy Award for his supporting role in the film, which he also produced. In her lawsuit against Warner Bros studios and Clooney's production company Section Eight, Vergniault is seeking two million euros ($2.55 million) and 35 percent of box office receipts. Warner Bros and Section Eight lawyer Patrick Dunaud said yesterday, "The two works bear strictly no resemblance with each other." Writer/director Gaghan says he wrote the script after being inspired by former CIA agent Robert Baer's memoirs. In court, Vergniault's lawyer Jasna Stark argued, "Writing Syriana demanded direct field experience. It's necessary to be a specialist of the matter to conceive a plot like that. Gaghan has no experience whatsoever of distribution and commercialization of oil, and of the geopolitical context." The case outcome will be decided on June 19.

The French lawsuit against Hollywood star George Clooney and Warner Brothers has been delayed until May 29 for procedural reasons. Clooney, who won Best Supporting Actor at this year's Academy Awards for his role in oil thriller Syriana, is being sued by screenwriter Stephanie Vergniault over allegations the film was copied. The Ocean's Eleven star claims to have drawn inspiration from CIA agent Robert Baer's book See No Evil, but Vergniault insists Clooney stole from her 2002 script called Oversight. Vergniault is demanding 35 per cent of the film's earnings in France and the United States. A Warner Bros spokesman has slammed her accusations as "without merit", adding, "We will defend our position in court."...

The writers of Capote and Syriana tied at the annual University Of Southern California Scripter Award, which honors the year's best film adaptation of a book, novella or short story. Capote, based on the biography of Truman Capote by Gerald Clarke with a screenplay by Dan Futterman, and Syriana, adapted from journalist Robert Baer's book See No Evil with a screenplay by Stephen Gaghan, achieved an equal number of votes at the 17th annual awards. A second ballotting procedure will go ahead to determine the winner, to be announced on Wednesday. Other finalists included author Annie Proulx and screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana for Brokeback Mountain, author John Le Carre and writer Jeffrey Caine for The Constant Gardener, and authors John Wagner and Vince Locke and scriptwriter Josh Olson for A History Of Violence. This isn't the first time a tie-breaker has been required - the writing teams for Seabiscuit and Mystic River drew even at the 2004 nominations. A run-off vote resulted in a second tie.

Two films have tied for the 17th annual USC Scripter Award, which honors the year's best film adaptation of a book, novella or short story and the only award that honors both the author and screenwriter. The writers of Capote and Syriana received an equal number of votes in the Scripter selection committee balloting. A runoff vote will determine this year's winning film, with the final results to be announced Wednesday. Capote is based on the biography of Truman Capote by Gerald Clarke and the screenplay by Dan Futterman. Syriana is adapted from journalist Robert Baer's book See No Evil with a screenplay by Stephen Gaghan, who also directed the film. The last run-off race occurred in 2004 when Seabiscuit and Mystic River tied for the award. A run-off election that was held still produced a tie. Finalists Capote and Syriana beat out were author Annie Proulx and screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana for Brokeback Mountain; author John le Carre and scribe Jeffrey Caine for The Constant Gardener; and authors John Wagner and Vince Locke and scribe Josh Olson for A History of Violence.

The writers of "Brokeback Mountain", "Capote", "The Constant Gardener", "A History of Violence" and "Syriana" have been nominated for USC's 18th Scripter Award. The Scripters honor the year's best film adaptation of a book, novella or short story and the award goes to the author and screenwriter. Those nominated are author Annie Proulx and screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana for "Brokeback Mountain"; author Gerald Clarke and screenwriter Dan Futterman for "Capote"; author John le Carre and scribe Jeffrey Caine for "Gardener"; authors John Wagner and Vince Locke and scribe Josh Olson for "Violence"; and author Robert Baer and screenwriter Stephen Gaghan for "Syriana". The list mirrors the nominees in the WGA's best adapted screenplay category, though the Scripters tend to usually diverge from the rest of the awards pack. (Since 1996, there have been only fours years in which the winners matched the WGA winners and only three that have gone on to win at the Oscars.)...

Greta Scacchi has booked back-to-back roles in two Warner Bros. Pictures films opposite two of Hollywood's established leading men. Scacchi, best known for her roles in The Player and Presumed Innocent, will first appear in the untitled Ted Griffin project starring Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner and Shirley MacLaine. Scacchi plays Costner's exuberant ex-wife. The movie is shooting in Pasadena. Scacchi then segues to Syriana for writer-director Stephen Gaghan. In the George Clooney-Matt Damon Middle Eastern political drama, which is based on the memoirs of CIA operative Robert Baer, Scacchi will portray Clooney's embittered wife. Both films are being produced by Warners-based Section 8. The Griffin project is produced by Steven Soderbergh, Paula Weinstein and Clooney, while Syriana is being produced by Soderbergh, Michael Nozik and Clooney. Scacchi, who won an Emmy for supporting actress in a miniseries or special for HBO's Rasputin, next appears in Kevin Spacey's Bobby Darin biopic Beyond the Sea. She is represented by Innovative Artists and manager Derek Power.
