Zayn’s starting point for his fourth studio album Room Under the Stairs was an emotional low point. “Alienated” began in his home studio in rural Pennsylvania, where he wrote the majority of the record on his own in a state of both creative and physical isolation. The percussive track simmers in solitary sorrow as the musician dives simultaneously into the darkest depths of his mind and the bottom of a bottle. “Know my reasons for the pain, but if you brought it in front of me I know I’d do it all again,...

On a hike with his snacks of choice — his fiancé Noah Galvin and chocolate mushrooms — Ben Platt saw the light.
“I was feeling really joyful and really present with [Noah] and I think he could really sense that. We were having one of those deep talks on our walk and he was asking me to describe what was allowing me to feel that way, and I started to talk about what it feels like to be in our relationship and my love for him and I started to envision a physical manifestation of what it might look like inside my head,” Platt tells The Hollywood Reporter.
“Because I am super anxiety prone and a very stressed person generally, I imagine there’s lots of jagged edges and lots of sharp things poking out and prodding, and when I envision what love does, it doesn’t necessarily make those things disappear or replace them.

Christopher Nolan’s Inception was widely regarded as the celebrated director’s best movie before Oppenheimer, and it still holds its own against the march of time. Captivating, convoluted, and visually stunning, Inception takes its viewers for a bizarre ride in someone’s head alongside an experienced dream thief, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Dom Cobb. But as per Nolan’s nature, the movie’s finale is ambiguous.
Inception’s Has the Most Talked-About Ending
Christopher Nolan managed to truly break into his audience’s minds with Inception. During the course of the movie, we learn that Cobb has a special totem he spins to learn whether he’s in a dream or in the real world — but as he gets his happily ever after, the viewers get a decade of frustration because of the final scene’s uncertainty.
In the finale, Cobb reunites with his kids, and when he spins his...

The week Sturgill Simpson’s breakthrough, generation-defining second album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, was released, the Number One song on country radio was Brantley Gilbert’s Nickelback-ified ode to women in short shorts and the boys who bring them to the tailgate. It was called “Bottoms Up,” and it wasn’t an aberration: The climate on Music Row in 2014 was still eagerly chasing the bro-country sound that Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line, and Gilbert helped turn into a reliable cash cow. So much so that the only single by...

Despite having lost three of her shipmates to an alien invader she doesn’t understand, despite learning that her shipmate and science officer Ash (Ian Holm) is an android, despite nearly getting killed when Ash tried to shove a porn mag down her throat, it’s something else that truly disturbs Ripley in Alien. It’s the two words she saw in a message from her employer: “crew expendable”
With those two words, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) realizes that she’s at the bottom of a food chain, and not just because there’s a bloodthirsty Xenomorph on board. Never one to portray businesses or anyone with power in a favorable light, Alien director Ridley Scott took writers Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett’s idea about a haunted house movie set in space and turned it into a screed against the ruling classes.

As much as "Inception" has a reputation for being overly complicated, the emotional core of the film is pretty simple: Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is sad because he kinda, sorta murdered his wife Mal (Marion Cotillard), and his arc is about confronting his guilt so he can move on. Much has been made of that ambiguous dream totem that might have been about to topple, but the important thing is that Cobb doesn't stick around to watch it. He goes off to hang out with his children, demonstrating that this is the life he's chosen to live regardless of whether or not it's real.
Although the totem gets all the buzz, plenty of viewers have also zeroed in on another potentially ambiguous moment in that final scene: when Cobb picks up his young son, the kid says, "I built a house." As a Wired journalist pointed out in a 2010 interview with Christopher Nolan,...

The sequel to the 2022 superhero hit “The Batman” may have been pushed to 2026, but fans of Matt Reeves’ take on Gotham City will have “The Penguin” to tide them over later this year.
On Friday, Max released a new trailer for the DC Studios limited series starring Colin Farrell as mobster Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin. Farrell’s Penguin was a supporting character in “The Batman” (and one of its best parts), but he gets center stage here as he tries to grab power in Gotham’s underworld after the death of his boss, Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), in “The Batman.”
With Farrell again unrecognizable under layers of prosthetic makeup, Cobb tells a story about Rex Calabrese, a gangster who ran his neighborhood when he was a kid. Calabrese earned people’s respect by helping them out, and when he died, the neighborhood threw a parade in his honor. “Can you imagine,...

Origins is a recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, country singer Cassandra Lewis sheds light on her new single, “Lost in a Dream.”
There’s a transportive quality to Cassandra Lewis’ voice. From the moment she opens her mouth, the listener is struck with the feeling of being in a different time and place, and while her trilling vibrato might recall Dolly Parton, her belt feels more theatrical, invoking the heartbreaking drama of an artist like Adele.
Lewis is the latest artist to be signed to Elektra’s Low Country Records, and hearing her sing live makes it obvious why the label felt the need to scoop her up. Her emotional power still comes through in recorded format, including on her new single, “Lost In a Dream.”

Before King Charles married his current wife (formerly known as Camilla Parker Bowles), the public wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry thought about their father marrying the woman he had an extramarital affair with while married to their late mother. It was fair to question since just about everyone blamed Camilla for breaking up their parents’ marriage.
At the time, Harry claimed that he and William “loved Camilla to bits” and knew how happy she made their dad. But after he quit his role as a working royal and went on his promotional book tour, which seemed more like a quest to try and take down the monarchy, the duke called his stepmother a “villain.” He also claimed in Spare that he and William asked Charles not to marry her.
Of course that’s only Harry’s version, William hasn’t talked about how he felt at the time.

Ty Cobb, the former White House attorney for Donald Trump, warned that Trump is a serious threat to democracy.
“I think you have to take Trump seriously because he poses the gravest threat to democracy that we’ve ever seen,” Cobb told CNN’s Erin Burnett. “On the other hand, I think his legal arguments are, you know, interposed solely for delay. I think as the government’s lawyer and special counsel’s lawyer argued today that, at the end of the day, it would be very scary if there was no accountability.”
“As Trump’s counsel has argued, for the types of conduct that have been charged here, when a president tries to prevent the peaceful transfer of power and uses the levers available to him to subvert the democratic republic and the electoral system,” Cobb said.

Thanksgiving weekend featured an animation face-off between a titan of the industry, the 100-year-old Walt Disney Animation Studios, and a relative upstart, Netflix, which only started releasing its own animated features in 2019.
Disney’s holiday movie, “Wish,” was a musical extravaganza featuring the watercolor backgrounds of the studio’s past combined with cutting-edge CGI, while Netflix’s “Leo” was a more budget-conscious musical set in modern-day Florida.
It was a showdown of theatrical versus streaming, legacy studio versus blustery upstart, fairy tale versus contemporary storytelling. And the results were startling.
While “Wish” came in third at the box office with a disappointing $31.6 million, the Adam Sandler-starring “Leo” debuted to 34.6 million views (which is hours viewed divided by total runtime), according to Netflix, which in box office terms equaled a haul of around $500 million for its opening weekend, one insider with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. “Leo” has been...

Ridley Scott's "Alien" is a science fiction masterpiece that mixes haunted house horror with the cold vastness of space, and it took a whole team of creatives to imagine the distinct future screenwriter Dan O'Bannon had envisioned. In his BFI Film Classics book "Alien," author Roger Luckhurst contrasts concept artists Ron Cobb and H.R. Giger, who each contributed to the look and feel of the film's dystopian, corporate-run version of the year 2122. While Cobb helped make the sterile corporate side of things feel appropriately grounded, Swiss biomechanical artist Giger designed the more out-of-this-world elements. It seems like Giger himself is rather out-of-this-world, too, as Luckhurst reveals a story from the movie's set where the artist simply decided, one day, that he needed bones. Lots of bones. Truckloads of bones.
If there was ever a movie where that kind of thing might be appropriate, it's probably "Alien." While some crew...

With Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” looking to continue its reign at the top spot of the box office, it’s time to consider the most sonorous secret to its success: its original, bluegrass-tinted song selection, including a theme written and produced by Dave Cobb (with lyrics from “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins), and sung soulfully by the film’s star, Rachel Zegler.
Reaching back to the 2020 prequel novel by Suzanne Collins that the movie is based on, Zegler points out how clearly Appalachian Lucy was, and how her accent exists in that vernacular throughout the duration of the novel, something that was destined to carry over into the music.
“District 12, where we exist canonically, lies in North Carolina and the Appalachian Mountains,” says Zegler, speaking from New York. “I’m glad Francis wanted to explore that — he even sent me the trailer for...

David Oyelowo as Bass Reeves and Mo Brings Plenty as Minco Dodge in ‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ episode 4 (Photo Credit: Lauren Smith / Paramount+)
Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode four kicks off with an unusual scene. Bass (David Oyelowo) sings while shooting a hole through a hat. He’s wearing tattered clothing, and it’s quickly obvious this is part of a carefully planned disguise.
The reason? Reeves needs to appear nonthreatening when he arrives at a woman’s door. Although initially leery of this stranger’s appearance, the woman – Widow Dolliver (Dale Dickey) – lowers her rifle and invites him inside, impressed that he can quote the Bible.
Her adult children, Wiley and Darrell, show up at dinner time and get into a fistfight…not with Bass, but amongst themselves. Widow Dolliver asks Bass’ help in moving them into the bedroom, all the while fretting about the sleepless nights these ne’er-do-wells have cost her.

Prince William and Kate Middleton largely steer clear of heavy Pda, or public displays of affection. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t demonstrate their closeness in other ways. According to a relationship consultant, the Prince and Princess of Wales put their “emotional unity” on display every time they wear coordinated outfits.
William and Kate show their ‘emotional unity’ through matching outfits
When William and Kate visited Cardiff, Wales, on Oct. 3, 2023, they greeted high school students, all the while wearing matching outfits. Kate, still firmly in her pantsuit era, sported a navy blue pinstripe suit. Meanwhile, William seemingly coordinated with his wife by wearing a blue tie and pants.
Offering an analysis of the royal couple’s outfits, relationship consultant Mairead Molloy told Hello! Magazine William and Kate’s coordinated clothing went deeper than a sweet fashion moment. She said it offered insight into their relationship.

Forty-one years after “The Thing” first opened in theaters and terrified audiences, director John Carpenter is still being asked about its widely debated ending. Like Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” (Is Cobb awake or dreaming?) or Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” (Is Rick Deckard a human or a replicant?) Carpenter’s body horror classic ends on a massive existential cliffhanger. In this case, it’s whether or not R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell) or Childs (Keith David) is still infected with a body-snatching alien.
One of the most popular and long-standing theories about the end of “The Thing” is courtesy of Dean Cundey, the film’s cinematographer. Cundey suggested that throughout the film a specific light gleam can be seen in the eyes of whichever body is currently inhabiting the alien. A light gleam can be seen in Childs’ eyes in the final scene, which would mean he’s infected with the Thing under Cundey’s theory.

The case for Shooter Jennings as one of the premier producers in music grows more compelling by the day, and you’d get no argument from Tanya Tucker.
“He always listens to my heart,” Tucker tells Rolling Stone, offering a simple reason for Jennings’ rise behind the console.
For Jennings, such a sentiment has been more than enough validation for his 2022 decision to step away from his own touring and songwriting career to focus full-time on his studio work.

Steel yourselves for something saucy because a series adaptation of the May Cobb novel, The Hunting Wives, is coming to Starz. The network gave the project an eight-episode order, with Hightown creator Rebecca Cutter writing, executive producing, and showrunning the adaptation with 3 Arts Entertainment’s Erwin Stoff. The Hunting Wives is the first new series coming to Starz since the end of the WGA strike last week. The network recently canceled shows, including Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting, much to the dismay of fans.
Here’s the synopsis for Cobb’s novel via Amazon:
Sophie O’Neill left behind an envy-inspiring career and the stressful, competitive life of big-city Chicago to settle down with her husband and young son in a small Texas town. It seems like the perfect life with a beautiful home in an idyllic rural community. But Sophie soon realizes that life is now too quiet,...

Movies are much like dreams. This, of course, is according to the visionary Oscar-nominated filmmaker, Christopher Nolan. Nolan is responsible for such cinematic treasures as The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Prestige, Interstellar, and among his most beloved, Inception. Inception is the story of a man’s desperate attempt to implant an idea into the subconscious mind of his mark. Over the years, the film has received endless amounts of analysis and theories to speculate on what the movie’s true meaning is and what it all means by the time the credits roll. Now, as is the case with all art, the movie is subjective and the Director himself has gone on record stating that he’s not interested in validating any of the existing theories floating around the internet since the film’s release.
While the parallels have since been highlighted between Nolan’s filmmaking philosophy and the philosophy of dreams,...

Spoilers for "Futurama" follow.
"Futurama" ended its latest season with "All The Way Down," an episode centered around the trippy science-fiction that makes the show more than just a standard sitcom. Professor Farnsworth's (Billy West) new machine, the Simputron, creates a digital simulation of the entire universe; the Planet Express crew chooses to follow the lives of their digital selves. This premise leans into metatext; the characters are watching their digital selves as we watch them as a TV program.
Bender (John Dimaggio) empathizes with the simulated crew; after all, as a robot, he's as artificial as they are. Such existential crises are nothing new for Bender. When the simulations go on a journey to prove if they're real or not, Bender downloads his software into the program, taking his counterpart's place to tell them the truth.

Whenever someone says that the classic rock sound is dead, another band comes around to try and bring it back. God, or at least the idea of a god, is an omniscient presence that’s also suspiciously absent in William Friedkin’s The Exorcist. The faith is kept alive in the film’s perpetual use of religious iconography, implying a worldly sense of spiritual belief, but the way in which the various priests conduct their pietism, most exemplified by Jason Miller’s brooding church psychologist Damien Karras, practically render their convictions as moot. At one point, Karras openly doubts his career choice after seeing firsthand the anxieties of his patients.

Cillian Murphy's latest role as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" has garnered significant buzz and critical acclaim, with some predicting that his intimate, complex portrayal of the man behind the atomic bomb will earn him an Oscar nomination. Though Murphy is undoubtedly brilliant in the biographical epic, the Irish actor has had over 25 years of preparation for the role through a number of projects in film, TV, and theater.
Murphy, like many actors, began his acting career on stage. In 1996, he made his stage debut in Enda Walsh's play "Disco Pigs," which was later adapted into a feature film starring Murphy in 2001. By the early 2000s, the actor took on several roles, but his role as Jim in the post-apocalyptic horror film "28 Days Later" propelled him into Hollywood. In 2005, he starred in "Batman Begins" and began what would become a decades-long collaborative friendship with Christopher Nolan.

By 2014 Christopher Nolan had established himself as one of the most exciting and important filmmakers of our generation. In addition to the genre-defining Dark Knight trilogy, Nolan made his name with complex, intellectually challenging thrillers such as Memento and Inception. His 2014 release Interstellar seemed primed to expand that reputation. That one’s the story of a mid-21st century astronaut (Matthew McConaughey) who leads an expedition into a wormhole which carries their vessel to another galaxy. It also used its sci-fi context to further dabble into shifting timelines, one of the English-American director’s favorite conceits, via the theory of relativity. The film was a hit, earning more than four times its budget in box office sales. But amidst the praise, a single, recurring complaint could be heard, loud and clear: “I can’t understand what anyone was saying.”
Interstellar was hardly the first time people charged the director with mishandling sound design.

The first line of dialogue spoken by Leonardo DiCaprio during Inception compares the stuff of dreams and aspirations to the spoils of rot and decay. “What is the most resilient parasite?” DiCaprio’s Cobb asks. “A bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm? [It’s] an idea; resilient; highly contagious; and once an idea has taken hold in the brain, it’s almost impossible to eradicate.”
In the 13 years since that film’s release, Inception has become widely viewed as a manifesto for its writer and director, Christopher Nolan. Here is a cinematic spectacle structured around the literal concept of implanting ideas into someone’s mind, where they will last forever. Even the pretext of the film (which is about thieves who must put together a heist) mirrors the collaborative nature of filmmaking, just as DiCaprio’s combed back blond hair and finely tailored suits evoke Nolan himself.

Thirteen years later and Christopher Nolan is still being hounded with questions about the ending of “Inception,” his acclaimed 2010 action thriller about a group of criminals who pull off a dream heist. The ending is notorious. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Cobb has completed his task and returns home to his children, but the film lingers on his spinning totem top as it begins to wobble. Cut to black. If the top spins indefinitely, Cobb is still dreaming. If it falls, Cobb is awake in the real world.
Moviegoers have spent over a decade debating whether or not Cobb is awake or dreaming at the end of “Inception,” but Nolan recently said on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that such debates are missing the ending’s real takeaway: Cobb doesn’t care.
“I went through a phase where I was asked that a lot,” Nolan said when the topic of the “Inception” ending came up.
