Sunday’s episode of “The Sympathizer” saw The Captain (Hoa Xuande) go to work as an interpreter on auteur Nikos’ (Robert Downey Jr.) film about the Vietnam War.
Co-showrunner Park Chan-wook revealed in an interview with TheWrap that one key change that the series made from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pultizer Prize-winning source material was moving the location of the film’s set from the Philippines to California.
“I think in the original novel, because it’s inspired by ‘Apocalypse Now,’ they changed the Philippines into Vietnam. But because of the financial restraints, we set this in California and changed that into Vietnam for this movie set,” Chan-wook said. “I think in hindsight, it turned out better in terms of our creative aspect… we were able to bring in our secondary characters into our story to have them play the...

With "Decision to Leave" recently hitting theaters to critical acclaim, it's fair to say that Park Chan-wook is on a roll right now. Then again, when hasn't he been? He's been an extremely consistent director in terms of quality and themes, with classics like "Oldboy" and "The Handmaiden" to his name. While he's mostly known for movies, he's certainly dipped his toes into television thanks to his directorial stint on the British miniseries "The Little Drummer Girl."
Now, he's returning to the small screen with an adaptation of "The Sympathizer," the 2015 debut novel of Viet Thanh Nguyen that garnered critical acclaim. While this series has been in the works since 2021, it has finally begun production in both Los Angeles and Thailand, according to The Hollywood Reporter. If you're eagerly anticipating Park's next project as much as we are, then you're in luck. We've compiled all you need to know about "The Sympathizer,...

The celebrity podcast game is at its height, with series such as Smartless (Jason Bateman/Sean Hayes/Will Arnett), Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend (CoCo) and Fly on the Wall (Dana Carvey/David Spade) proving wildly successful in their genres. Now, Robert Downey Jr. is on the podcast scene…and facing a lawsuit over it.
Robert Downey Jr. is being accused of copyright infringement, breach of contract, and–you didn’t guess it–elderly abuse over the podcast The Sunshine Place. It should be noted that Downey Jr. does not host the podcast; rather, he executive produces the podcast through Team Downey, formed in 2010 by Downey Jr. and his wife Susan.
The accusations stem from a 77-year-old cult expert named Paul Morantz, who claims Robert Downey Jr. and Team Downey did not properly obtain rights to use Morantz’s materials found in his books for the podcast. Team Downey allegedly...
