New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features selections reflecting the month of April 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include telepathic plants, ecological horrors, and a lot of killer cats.
The Uncanny (1977)
Pictured: The Uncanny (1977)
Directed by Denis Héroux.
The Uncanny is a two-for kind of deal: it works for both National Pet Day (April 11) and Tell a Story Day (April 27). Here we have Peter Cushing‘s character talking at length about the evils of cats, with his three examples fleshing out this singular anthology. And while this film is often mistaken for an Amicus production, it was, in fact, made by The Rank Organisation. However, Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky was also a co-producer.

Ecological horror is a genre that is not often tapped for terror these days, though it was – at one time – a staple of the horror genre, with films like Frogs, The Bees, Day of the Triffids, Them! and a myriad of spider-based movies asking “what if?” questions that captured the imagination of audiences for years.

full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by distributor October Coast. Director/writer: James Ojala. Cast: Tiffany Shepis, Stephen Tobolowsky, Lisa Sheridan, John Hennigan and Bruce Bohne. Strange Nature is an eco-horror or bio-thriller film. This title was developed by first time feature film director and make-up effects guru James Ojala. This title features: Tiffany Shepis (Victor Crowley), Lisa Sheridan ("CSI: Miami"), Bruce Bohne and a few others. Fans of Shepis will be disappointed as she appears in only a couple of scenes. However, Strange Nature does bring a lot of interesting characters to the screen, including former pop star and protagonist Kim Sweet (Sheridan). A micro-budget feature, much of the production value is put into the many deformed creatures on-screen. As well, Strange Nature offers a few comedic bits, before moving into more horrifying territory. This film offers both light and dark tones as one town struggles to.

Tagline: "Our Waters are Hiding a Killer." Strange Nature is a horror film from spfx guru James Ojala (Hellboy II: The Golden Army ). In Strange Nature, a real life ecological disaster is brought to the screen. In 1995, deformed frogs began to appear in Minnesota ponds. The film shows those deformities in some of the characters! Strange Nature stars: Stephen Tobolowsky (Groundhog Day), Tiffany Shepis (Victor Crowley) Carlos Alazraqui and John Hennigan. A trailer for the film was released late last year (found below). Now, a concept poster is available, here. For more on the story, the real life events for the film were investigated by the U.S. government, until 2001. A cause, for the amphibious deformities, was never found. Within the film, a single mother struggles to deal with a number of strange incidents. She must protect her son as a small town, in Minnesota, begins to turn into something unrecognizable.

A very pregnant Esther Woodhouse (Rasmussen) is walking home after her latest Ob appointment when she is brutally attacked and disfigured by a hooded assailant. Horror movies aren't exactly supposed to make you feel good. They're supposed to shock you. They're supposed to terrify you. And they're supposed to show you just how evil and horrifying the world can be.
If this clip from Zack Parker's Proxy (review) is any indication, it's one horror film that truly earns its place within the genre.
We must warn you that the clip you're about to see is incredibly disturbing, and it depicts a pregnant woman being savagely assaulted. Art is not safe, and this shocking opening sequence is proof of that fact. You have been warned.
Proxy will hit VOD outlets on April 18th, with a release at NYC's IFC Center on the same date. A wider theatrical rollout is expected to follow.
Alexia Rasmussen, Alexa Havins, Kristina Klebe, and Joe Swanberg all star.

In his latest movie Proxy (review), indie filmmaker Zack Parker takes on some pretty brutal subject matter – the murder of a late-term fetus, lesbian obsession, secrets, lies, and stalkers. And that’s just for starters! Read on to see what Parker has to say about all this and more.
Dread Central: You've been making films since you were a child... What's the enduring fascination for you?
Zack Parker: I don’t think it’s something I can necessarily pinpoint. I’ve just always had a connection to movies. Almost felt I understood them in a strange way. My parents divorced when I was pretty young. My mother worked, so I was just one of those generation of kids that grew up in front of the television. That was the world I knew.
My dad bought a small Hi 8 video camera when I was eleven, and I just started making little short movies with them.

Welcome to Issue 27 of ‘The Marvelous Da7e!’
Real quick mission statement: this column is for discussion of superhero movie news and superhero movies…Or Is It?
This week: A bad comic fan film is in the news for blatant theft. Let’s not let that tarnish fan films.
This Shia Labeouf thing is getting weird.
Mr. Labeouf, for those who don’t know, released a short film that ended up being a word-for-word visual version of Daniel Clowes’ 2007 comic, “Justin M. Damiano”, just with names and a few props changed. No where in the film is Clowes acknowledged and the artist and his editor are super-pissed at the plagiarism at hand.
This is all a little surreal, because I had seen this comic pop up on Tumblr during Cannes when Shia Labeouf’s short HowardCantour.com had premiered. Someone had blogged it with a caption like: ust saw a live action version of this.

It's entirely possible that comic punk band The Radioactive Chicken Heads are legitimately insane, so just imagine the entertainment possibilities: the costumes, props and onstage antics of Gwar or Lmfao, combined with the humor of award-winning children's songwriter Barry Louis Polisar... okay, maybe that's too much to wrap your head around all at once. But don't worry, we're here to help. Their new brain-scrambling video for “Deviled Egg” is a pretty accurate snapshot of what's going on inside the minds of musicians with names like Carrot Topp, Cheri Tomato, Puke Boy and Frankenchicken. It's directed by Jim Ojala, the talented makeup effects artist whose work has appeared in Hellboy, Deadgirl, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, True Blood, and much more. Ready for this one? Too bad. Watch it anyway. Radioactive Chicken Heads - Deviled Egg Music Video “Deviled Egg” comes from Rch's album Music for Mutants, which also features titles like...

“In Production” is a regular column which focuses on notable independent films that are currently shooting.
Shooting from mid-July in Eastern Indiana, Scalene director Zack Parker’s Proxy is a suspense thriller about Esther (Alexia Rasmussen), a pregnant woman who joins a support group after being attacked one night and strikes up a dysfunctional relationship with a fellow victim (Alexa Havins). Parker’s last feature Scalene, which is set for release on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD on July 31st, received glowing reviews for its clever use of the fractured narrative – potentially one of the most over-used cinematic devices of the past three decades. Parker has assembled many of the same crew for Proxy, including composers The Newton Brothers and d.p. Jim Timperman, and added SFX makeup artist James Ojala (Hellboy II, True Blood). Having divided viewers and sparked a lot of chatter on the film-festival circuit and at midnight shows over the past year, Deadgirl has now arrived on unrated DVD from Dark Sky with a reversible cover reflecting the way the movie subverts expectations of the undead and bad-girl subgenres. Initially packaged on the outside is the traditional zombie image seen at left; on the inside is the more provocative art seen below.
The movie (reviewed at length here) is both a gory ghoul opus in which the living corpse receives more violence than it inflicts, and a femme-fatale film of sorts in which the title character is confined to a state of inactivity for much of the running time. Specifically, the catatonic DeadGirl (Jenny Spain) is discovered bound to a table in the basement of an abandoned hospital by Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and J.T. (Noah Segan), teenaged pals united by their high-school-outsider status.

Issues of gender have been discussed in relation to slasher films for almost as long as frequently unclothed women have cowered beneath and fallen victim to phallic blades. The same hasn’t been true of zombie cinema, since transformation into the undead has tended to render questions of male/female identity moot. That changes with Deadgirl, a troubling, attention-grabbing and already polarizing first feature by directors Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel. Working from a screenplay by Trent Haaga, whose previous credits for Troma and other low-budget outfits gave little indication of the thematic ambitions expressed here, Sarmiento and Harel flip the genre script on its head. Deadgirl (playing midnight bookings in selected U.S. cities and at Montreal’s Fantasia festival this weekend) begins by establishing as its “heroes” a couple of high-school slackers and best friends, Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and J.T. (Noah Segan). Neither one of them has...
