MSNBC is giving cable news rival CNN increased competition in the exploding documentary arena through ramped up acquisitions by a revived arm devoted to non-fiction programming.
MSNBC Films showed the seriousness of its intent in June, when it won an intense bidding war for “Paper & Glue,” by the visual artist and prior Oscar nominee Jr, ahead of its Tribeca Film Festival premiere. “Paper & Glue” has since qualified for Academy Award consideration, and is competing against documentaries including “Julia,” backed by CNN Films and Sony Pictures Classics. MSNBC also has qualified two short documentaries – Emily L. Harrold’s “Meltdown at Dixie” and Seth Freed Wessler’s “The Facility” — for Oscar consideration

Civil War, the latest doc from Rachel Boynton unfolds in a series of revelations. The project was sparked in the wake of the slaughter of Black parishioners at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, Sc during President Obama’s last year in office, and continued right through the domestic terrorism of the Trump administration. During that time Boynton took a historical journey, traversing the US from Massachusetts to Mississippi, with a singular question in mind: What’s the story of the Civil War? Or more precisely, What’s your story of the […]

Peacock has acquired Civil War, a documentary from director Rachel Boynton whose EPs include Brad Pitt and Henry Louis Gates Jr. The film will bow June 17 on NBCUniversal’s streamer, then premiere on MSNBC in October.
The pic is having a limited theatrical release starting Friday.
Per the logline, Civil War travels across the United States to explore how Americans tell the story of their Civil War. Filmed from President Obama’s final year in office through the present, it interweaves insightful scenes and interviews filmed North and South, painting a uniquely crafted, multi-faceted portrait of the American psyche and the deep roots of its turbulent times. With delicacy and strength, subtlety and determination, the lays bare a nation in denial, haunted by an embittered past and the stories it refuses to tell.

After naming Alfonso Cuarón the best-reviewed filmmaker of the 21st century and Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer the worst, Metacritic’s next list explores the 25 best movies directed by women. Unsurprisingly, Kathryn Bigelow takes both the #1 and #2 spots with “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Hurt Locker,” respectively.

Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director with the latter, a painfully tense drama about the Iraq War. (Her latest, “Detroit,” just misses the list by a few points.) Ava DuVernay also shows up twice (with “Selma” and “13th”), as does Sarah Polley (“Away from Her” and “Stories We Tell”), while the likes of Sofia Coppola, Mia Hansen-Løve, and Maren Ade are represented as well. Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton go head to head as strategists in a patchy satire about the 2002 Bolivian elections
David Gordon Green’s uneven Wag the Dog-style satirical political romp takes both its title and theme from Rachel Boynton’s 2005 documentary about the role played by the gun-for-hire American consultants in the 2002 Bolivian elections. Sandra Bullock (who shares producer credits with, among others, George Clooney and Grant Heslov) is the reclusive political strategist “Calamity” Jane Bodine, who turned her back on her profession after one dirty trick too many.
Reluctantly enlisted to help elect the unlikable bully Castillo (Joaquim de Almeida), Jane gets the bit between her teeth when she discovers that her arch-rival, Pat Candy (Billy Bob Thornton), is running the opposition’s campaign. Screenwriter Peter Straughan’s script originally featured a male protagonist, but Bullock makes the role her own, from vomiting into a wastepaper basket...

Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton fail to convince as rival Us spin-doctors on the presidential campaign trail in Bolivia
This is a disappointing fictional version of Rachel Boynton’s 2005 documentary Our Brand Is Crisis, about Us political consultant James Carville, the Democrat spin-doctor who famously married his Republican opponent Mary Matalin after the 1992 Us presidential campaigns. It’s a laboured and unoriginal satire, directed by David Gordon Green, which finds a cynical theme-variation in this unlikeliest of Romeo and Juliet unions, and makes a meal of Carville’s real-life adventure in 2002, when he masterminded a Bolivian presidential campaign.

U.S., 2015
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington featured a young, authentic Jimmy Stewart who does battle with the corrupt political machine. Many decades later, that hardened view of politicians (and the machine that gets them elected) has not changed. David Gordon Green’s loosely fictionalized take on a 2005 documentary by Rachel Boynton doesn’t attempt to change any minds about the political process. Green begins the film with an off-screen journalist interviewing Jane Bodine (Sandra Bullock), who prompts Jane to explain where her inspiration for her work comes from. Jane responds “When I started in this business, my heroes were politicians and leaders. Then I met them.”
Comfortably settled in a mountainside cabin, “Calamity” Jane has exiled herself after a few defeats on the campaign trail, but (Ann Dowd) aims to recruit her anyway. Jane relents when...

What an odd little beast! Neither fish nor fowl, the highly-fictionalized Our Brand Is Crisis acknowledges that it was "suggested" by Rachel Boynton's same-titled 2005 documentary. That film, which I have not seen, revolved around two male political strategists -- James Carville was the better-known -- hired to run a presidential campaign in Bolivia. This version, however, has been fashioned as a rickety star vehicle for Sandra Bullock as a notorious political operative known as 'Calamity Jane.' She is lured out of early retirement to redeem herself in Bolivia after crashing and burning; she lost too many elections in a row and fell victim to the twin addictions of alcohol and drugs. Hired by campaign manager Ben (Anthony Mackie) at the recommendation of assistant manager...

It’s probably because I know little about politics and care even less that I find most film’s dealing with the subject matter enjoyable. George Clooney‘s The Ides of March is one—the actor taking on the director’s chair, a co-screenwriting credit, and co-lead in front of the lens. Highly political himself with the media, it’s no surprise he’d gravitate towards a play based on an actual campaign (“Farragut North”) or a documentary doing much the same. The latter is Rachel Boynton‘s film centered on the 2002 Bolivian presidential election overseen by Us firm Greenberg Carville Shrum’s marketing team of which the narrative Our Brand Is Crisis took both name and plot. Clooney was set to star here, too, before Sandra Bullock took a shine to the script.

David Gordon Green still remains an enigma of a filmmaker. Every time he's got a new film, there are those (like myself) who close their eyes as soon as the lights dim, and make a little wish: "Oh ye mighty gods of cinema, let this be the Green who made the powerfully subtle and profoundly felt 'George Washington.'" More often than not, the gods are cruel, and grant us the same Green who directed "The Sitter" and "Your Highness." When he seems to set sail again, like with the wonderful "Joe," the wind gets taken out by something mangy like "Manglehorn." Prior to Tiff, "Our Brand Is Crisis" seemed like an obvious, slam dunk, awards season contender. David Gordon Green was at the helm of a George Clooney-produced movie, based on a true story no less, with Sandra Bullock in the lead role, with a great ensemble around her. Then the reviews came in (here's ours). Not particularly well received in Toronto, Warner Bros. seems to have already realized the picture is a non-starter and have been rather muted in their push, but with the release date a couple of weeks away, the promo machine is modestly kicking up. Five clips, a handful of TV spots, and lots of new images have landed online. Based on Rachel Boynton's documentary of the same name, the film follows an American political guru who is called in to help on the presidential campaign in the race for leadership of a South American nation.

Warner Bros. has today unveiled a slew of new images for the Sandra Bullock-led political drama, Our Brand is Crisis.
Hailing from Pineapple Express helmer David Gordon Green, the studio’s starry picture places a laser focus on the 2002 Bolivian presidential election. Bullock is on board to play Jane Bodine, a political strategist ushered in to whip a struggling candidate’s campaign into shape. Such a move will mean that Bodine will have to pull herself away from her self-imposed exile, with Bullock’s character earning the nickname “calamity” for a deeply personal reason that is still to be revealed.
Inspired by Rachel Boynton’s well-regarded documentary from 2005, Our Brand is Crisis may lack the marketing push to consider itself a bona fide Oscar contender, but there are elements here to suggest Green’s feature could make a late charge. Joining Bullock for the flick...

October is stacked with some of the year’s best films, both in wide release and limited, many slowly expanding through November, and we have a record-setting 20 recommendations for the month. The conclusion of Tiff and Venice also brought a batch of worthwhile premieres, some of which one will be able to see this month.
To note, after limited September debuts, the recommended Sicario and The Walk will both be opening wide on October 2nd and 9th, respectively. There’s also a few notable releases we weren’t fans of, including Love (10/30) and Truth (10/16). Then there’s some on our radar that would make for worthwhile matinees: Sherpa (10/2), (T)error (10/7), The Final Girls (10/9), Meadowland (10/16) and Rock the Kasbah (10/23). We should also make a note that Paul Thomas Anderson‘s new short film Junun will start streaming at midnight on October 9th at Mubi.

Caught in an ambiguous middle ground between a political drama and comedy, the new film Our Brand Is Crisis manages to balance itself adequately for most of its running time. Most of the film's charm and power however is due to actress Sandra Bullock, who is clearly gunning for her second Oscar. Bullock commands the lead role originally intended for male counterpart (and the film's producer) George Clooney as a tough-talking political strategist who has seen better days and is now staging an overdue comeback. Inspired by Rachel Boynton's documentary of the same name, Our Brand Is Crisis has all the story beats and rhythms of many underdog movies but the cast and direction are what set it apart from the clutter. The fictional lead character of Jane Bodine plays to Bullock's strengths - loud, unapologetic and able to pull a last minute save when she has to. The...

“When politics is treated as a game, everybody loses.”
I think Warren Beatty said that. Or someone else. Or I just made it up. Either way, it seems like the type of false quote that would be appreciated by Jane Bodine, the central character of Our Brand is Crisis, played by Sandra Bullock. Read More: The 2015 Indiewire Telluride Bible George Clooney was originally slated to play the scheming political strategist hired to salvage a Bolivian presidential candidate in "Our Brand is Crisis," but her role isn't the only transition on the screen. For over a decade, director David Gordon Green has shifted between melancholic character studies ("George Washington," "Joe") outrageous comedies ("Pineapple Express," "The Sitter"), and unclassifiable hybrids ("Prince Avalanche," last year's "Manglehorn"). With "Our Brand is Crisis," however, Green assembles the lively vision of ruthless political machinations with a sturdy hand and irony to spare, but mostly takes cues from his vibrant lead and the material itself. Billed as being "suggested by" the 2005 Rachel Boynton documentary of the same name, "Our Brand is Crisis" takes that movie's portrait of the marketing tactics behind...

Here’s your first look at the brand new trailer for director David Gordon Green’s Our Brand Is Crisis, starring Oscar winners Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) and Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade).
The film will debut this coming weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival and then in theaters on October 30th.
In the film, a Bolivian presidential candidate failing badly in the polls enlists the firepower of an elite American management team, led by the deeply damaged but still brilliant strategist “Calamity” Jane Bodine (Bullock). In self-imposed retirement following a scandal that earned her nickname and rocked her to her core, Jane is coaxed back into the game for the chance to beat her professional nemesis, the loathsome Pat Candy (Thornton), now coaching the opposition.
But as Candy zeroes in on every vulnerability – both on and off the campaign trail – Jane is plunged into a personal crisis...

The upcoming David Gordon Green film Our Brand Is Crisis wants desperately to have the word “satire” associated with it, but the trailer doesn’t offer us up a satire (in fact or theory), and it hasn’t gone far to offer up something worth watching either.
While I’m no fan of Sandra Bullock, I suspect this is largely a result of a trailer that simply isn’t put together well, an odd note considering the subject of the film, because David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, Prince Avalanche, Joe) can put together a film, and Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Wolf Hall) can certainly write amazing screenplays.
The film’s synopsis describes it as “laced with satire,” which, quite frankly, is a turn of phrase that makes it hard to imagine exactly what you have in mind, and more broadly, the trailer seems to be shooting for a path of least resistance.

The last time Sandra Bullock collaborated with George Clooney, they were up in space for Gravity. For Our Brand Is Crisis, Clooney’s staying behind the camera as a producer, and Bullock starring as a political strategist brought in to help a flailing South American campaign. Check out the first trailer below. Bullock stars as “Calamity” Jane Bodine, a smart, savvy strategist who is nevertheless reeling from a scandal that gave her the nickname and shook her confidence. She’s offered the chance at a comeback by working on the campaign for Bolivian presidential candidate Pedro Gallo (Joaquim de Almeida), who is flagging in the polls, seen as out of touch and elitist. But when Jane arrives in the country, she discovers that her professional nemesis, Pat Candy (Billy Bob Thornton) is coaching the opposition. That, though, just gives her the fire to keep going and try to beat him at last.

Warner Bros.’ political drama Our Brand Is Crisis displayed early signs of its awards aspirations late last year as the A-list names continued to roll in. From its production team – George Clooney and Grant Heslovs’s Smokehouse Pictures – to the balanced ensemble of big-hitters and character actors, the Oscar-friendly evidence began to accumulate. And while you shouldn’t judge a film on its boilerplate, you can make a reasonable assessment based on its trailer: which we now have for you above.

Quietly turning in two back-to-back Texas gems in the form of “Joe” and “Manglehorn” (the latter of which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and hits theatres soon via IFC Films), director David Gordon Green seems to have struck gold with a home turf advantage —during production of “Manglehorn,” he could ride his bike to nearly every location. But he’s set a challenge for himself with follow-up “Our Brand is Crisis,” a political comedy-drama starring Sandra Bullock, Scoot McNairy and Billy Bob Thornton. “Bolivia, Puerto Rico, New Orleans, Colorado, and Los Angeles,” Green told us at SXSW of his globetrotting filming locations, going on to hint further at what the film has in store. Based on the 2005 documentary of the same name by Rachel Boynton, Green’s film focuses on questionable political strategies used by U.S. consultancy company Greenberg Carville Shrum during on the 2002 Bolivian political elections.
