"Don't talk – otherwise my dad will kill you." Cranked Up Films has debuted an official trailer for a strange indie dark comedy titled This Game's Called Murder, the latest cinema creation from writer / director Adam Sherman. A modern, dark-humored tale of greed, romance, and lost innocence in consumer-crazed, alienated society that functions as a harsh critique of society today without taking itself too seriously. This hasn't played at any festivals, and will be dropping directly into two cinemas + on VOD this December. The film is about the wacky, weird, extremely wealthy Wallendorf Family. The eccentric Wallendorf’s struggle to maintain the facade of a prominent successful family while their violent nature rips them apart. The film stars Ron Perlman, Natasha Henstridge, Vanessa Marano, James Lastovic, Nicole Sousa, Nikko Austen Smith, and Tory Devon Smith. This looks like there's way too many big ideas that clash with each other, despite a...

She's Just A Shadow
Sex, drugs, murder, gang wars, high fashion and low life on the streets of Tokyo: Adam Sherman’s stylish thriller She’s Just A Shadow has it all. It’s playing in Us cinemas now and seems destined to become a cult favourite on DVD. Films that pull off this intense, multi-layered style are few and far between, so I was glad of the chance to speak to Adam about how it developed. I began by asking him about the shocking and visually striking opening scene, in which a serial killer takes a young woman from the boot of his car, ties her to the railway tracks and performs a sexual act before videoing her being hit by a train. Is the rumour true that this was inspired by, of all things, the adventures of kids’ cartoon hero Dudley Do-Right?

A longtime camera operator for the CBS drama Criminal Minds is suing CBS Corp, series’ producer ABC Studios and others over what he alleges is a long pattern of sexual harassment and battery by a supervisor on the show.
According to the often graphic and explicit lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court (read it here), the incidents began soon after plaintiff Todd Durboraw started work as 2nd assistant camera on the series in 2011. His suit claims that director of photography Greg St. John “touched Plaintiff’s body sexually” on “numerous occasions” throughout Durboraw’s employment. St. John and Entertainment Partners Enterprises also are named as a defendant in the case.
The filing also alleges a pattern of harassment that included St. John “screaming” at Durboraw, threatening him with termination...

In the USA, July 4 is known as Independence Day. As an alternative, She's Just a Shadow declares that it's Thursday. Bloody Thursday. With apologies to U2, and also to sincere people who will be blowing up stuff right good tonight, we offer an exclusive clip from self-described arthouse horror/thriller She's Just a Shadow. Because I am inclined toward arthouse film, sometimes love horror titles, and generally love thrillers, Adam Sherman's new film sounds like it's right up my alley. Based in Tokyo, the film stars Okamoto Tao, Abe Haruka, Kihiro, and Asaka Kentez. The official synopsis says: "A beautiful Japanese madam and her ladies. A deranged, drug-addled Tokyo gangster and his crew. A sadistic serial killer on the loose. "The intersection of these stories,...

Chicago – By the age of 15, actress Hanna Hall had delivered iconic lines in two of the most acclaimed films of the ’90s. After famously yelling, “Run, Forrest, run!” in Robert Zemeckis’s Oscar-winner, “Forrest Gump,” Hall nailed the unforgettable line, “Obviously, doctor, you’ve never been a 13-year-old girl,” in Sofia Coppola’s directorial debut, “The Virgin Suicides.”
Since then, Hall has tackled a wide variety of audacious roles in both mainstream releases, such as Rob Zombie’s 2007 “Halloween” remake, and independent productions including Adam Sherman’s edgy 2010 drama, “Happiness Runs.” In her latest film, “Scalene,” Hall plays Paige, a compassionate college student who signs up to care for a mentally handicapped man, Jakob (Adam Scarimbolo). When she suspects that Jakob is being abused by his mother, Janice (Margo Martindale), Paige attempts to “save” him by devising a plan that could potentially result in her own doom. Director: Adam Sherman Starring: Lukas Haas, Madeline Zima, Jake Busey, Valerie Mahaffey, Ray Wise One of my least favorite character types in the history of cinema is the ridiculously rich, alcoholic, Hollywood playboy. You know the type: the pretty boy who never works, drinks 24 hours a day and can get any woman he wants at any time he wants. He preys on women who want his money, all the while complaining that women only like him for his money. In the case of Adam Sherman's Crazy Eyes, Zach (Lukas Haas) -- despite being a rich asshole with no feelings -- can have any woman...well, except for the one flirtatious tease for whom he embarrassingly pines. He dubs her Crazy Eyes, but her real name is Rebecca (Madeline Zima). Zach drunkenly and clumsily attempts to have sex with Crazy Eyes over and over and over and over and over and over again.

"I will die without Crazy Eyes!" Strand Releasing has debuted the official trailer for indie dramedy Crazy Eyes, starring Lukas Haas and Madeline Zima and Jake Busey. This quirky little dramatic comedy is set mostly in Los Angeles, following a "rich boy" who meets a girl unlike anyone he calls "Crazy Eyes" that he can't have, but of course there's all kinds of tension and drama and things going on. I'm a fan of Lukas Haas, you may recognize him from Brick or Alpha Dog or Death in Love or Inception or Contraband, and I like seeing him in good lead roles where he really fits the role. This looks intriguing, I'm curious to check it out. There’s very little redemption in Crazy Eyes, a film that opens with the type of disclosure that appears buried in the end credits next to the copyright information – that the film is a work of fiction. True, but this is the story of many men, women and families torn apart by addiction. Zach (Lukas Haas) is a wealthy Los Angelino. He hates the city – proclaiming its filled with carbon copies or carbon copies as he pre-games at his wood top mansion before heading out for the evening. As a romantic subgenre, the alcoholic love story doesn’t typically hit upon anything fantastically new or groundbreaking – drink, fight, cry, love, repeat until something terrible happens – but director and co-writer Adam Sherman and his charming cast have done something wonderful with their Crazy Eyes. Sherman and stars Lukas Haas and Madeline Zima have injected life and humor into their story of two shiftless Hollywood alcoholics and their maybe-love story. In terms of fitting into its genre, Crazy Eyes feels a bit like a more light-hearted Leaving Las Vegas or a more energetic Somewhere – comparisons that are meant as compliments. Before we even meet Haas’ Zach, he warns us via voiceover that his story is true, and that the movie’s “all persons fictitious” disclaimer (the “is purely coincidental” paragraph that accompanies works of fiction) is a lie of its own. But Zack is a drunk, a boozehound, an alcoholic of the highest order – and someone who...

A dark, realistic character study that isn't for the easily offended.
Director: Adam Sherman

Of all the films screening at SXSW this year 'Crazy Eyes' was one of the first to get cut from my schedule. At first glance it was easy to assume I'd seen too many of these types of films before. You know the type: guy can get any girl he wants but wants the one he can't have. Still, at the last minute I decided to take a risk and catch the premiere screening. As soon as the credits rolled I knew I had found my festival favorite.
Synopsis: Zach, a wealthy, alcoholic divorcee and father, is torn between his past love and present infatuation. His obsession for Rebecca, who he affectionately calls Crazy Eyes, seems to be driving...

Director: Adam Sherman Writer: Adam Sherman Starring: Mark L. Young, Hanna Hall, Jesse Plemons, Laura Peters, Shiloh Fernandez Presumably sometime in the late 1960s, Victor’s (Mark L. Young) parents (Andie MacDowell and Mark Boone Junior) discovered what they thought was utopia – a far out rural hippie commune founded on the precepts of free love, drug experimentation and freshly grown vegetables. Twenty years later, finding themselves trapped like rats in this no longer utopian cage, the offspring of the free love generation have evolved into bitter and jaded punk rockers. For this next generation, freedom has become unbearably oppressive. Brimming with animosity for their spaced-out and disillusioned parents, these kids will do whatever they can to not follow in their parents’ footsteps; they just can’t shake the promiscuity, but they do turn to harder drugs and darker music. Their chosen soundtrack – The Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Fear, Bad Brains, UK Subs,...

Based on writer-director Adam Sherman’s experiences growing up on a hippie commune, the film offers a relentlessly bleak portrait of a failed utopia. “They weren’t supposed to get older,” says Becky (Hanna Hall), a teenager born into free love and drug experimentation, “and we weren’t supposed to grow up. They didn’t plan for a future.”
Becky is “everybody’s girlfriend.” Victor (Mark L. Young) wishes she was his and his alone. The son of the sickbed-bound woman bankrolling the commune (Andie MacDowell), he still has a few years before he’ll inherit his fortune at age 21, but he’s desperate to escape now and take Becky with him. Meanwhile, he vies for her attention with two dealers, Chad (Jesse Plemons) and Shiloh (Shiloh Fernandez), while Rachel (Laura Peters) hides in the shadows — with, it turns out, good reason.

Yes, we're excited to see "Iron Man 2," "Inception" and God help us, "Predators." But what we're really looking forward to spending a few hours in the company of an undertaking Bill Murray ("Get Low"), an Italian-speaking Tilda Swinton ("I Am Love") and a toga-wearing Rachel Weisz ("Agora") in the comfort of air-conditioned theater over the next three months. (Either that or we'll be enjoying them from the comfort of home online, on demand or on DVD.)

Sex, drugs and beautiful youth are the enticing elements throughout writer/director Adam Sherman's autobiographical drama "Happiness Runs" and yet the coming-of-age drama fails to excite. Based on Sherman's childhood growing up in a polygamous commune in Vermont, the novice filmmaker reveals personal bravery for mining his own experiences with free love and experimental drug use but fails to take advantage of their dramatic potential. Sherman, directing his second feature after the little-seen 2004 horror comedy "Dead Doll", may be too close to the "Lord of the Flies"-like tale of children rebelling against their hippie parents. Besides a soundtrack of alternative classics featuring Joy Division and The Buzzcocks and some artful sequences including one with lead actress Hanna Hall and an abandoned Ferris wheel there's little to recommend.
