Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. But get to it quick before the Baz Luhrmann film departs on...

Tyler Perry has achieved success in the entertainment industry on a scale almost beyond comparison: he’s the creative force behind two dozen films, 20 plays, two bestselling books and well over a dozen television series. Tyler Perry Studios, the huge production complex he built in Atlanta, is home to 12 custom sound stages.
What’s even more astounding is all he had to overcome to accomplish those feats – growing up poor in New Orleans and enduring physical and mental abuse at the hands of his father. His extraordinary journey is told in Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story, the film from Prime Video directed by Gelila Bekele (Perry’s former life partner and mother of his child) and Armani Ortiz.

As Frogmore Cottage returns to headlines (more on that ahead), an author says King Charles III’s “vindictive” decision about the property left Prince Harry “furious.” Ahead, why getting evicted from the U.K. home served as a “painful reminder” to the Duke of Sussex about his parents’ split.
The 2023 Frogmore Cottage eviction moved Harry to ‘tears’
In the wake of Spare’s January 2023 release, Harry and Meghan Markle had to vacate their U.K. home, Frogmore Cottage. Located in Windsor, England, near Windsor Castle, it remained the couple’s U.K. home base even after relocating to Montecito, California, in 2020.
The last of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s belongings were cleared out in the weeks following the coronation, which Harry attended solo in May 2023. According to Tom Quinn, a royal biographer and commentator, being told to leave left Harry “furious.”

Meghan Markle has launched several business ventures since departing the United Kingdom for a more private life in California alongside her husband, Prince Harry, back in 2020. Most recently, the Duchess of Sussex has started American Riviera Orchard, a brand that will sell everything from jams and marmalades to textiles. There is little information known about the exact products or launch date.
In addition to that, Meghan is preparing to launch a cooking show with Netflix where she’ll showcase some of her favorite recipes — but at least one royal critic is calling the duchess a hypocrite.

Ryan Millsap, former CEO and owner of Blackhall Studios, made a name for himself in Atlanta as an executive who encouraged diversity. But, per a report published by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and ProPublica, he may not have been as pro-diversity and inclusion as he appeared.
This week, ProPublica staffer Nicole Carr and Atlanta Journal-Constitution senior editor Mike Jordan published an investigation that looked into hundreds of pages of text messages between Millsap and his ex-girlfriend, Christy Hockmeyer, that were submitted as evidence in a lawsuit against him.
His texts, mostly from 2019, included comments about “Fucking Black people” and “nasty Jews,” as well as other racist and antisemitic views. The pages were released due to a legal dispute, which includes various filings, between the real estate developer and his former attorney, John Da Grosa Smith.
“Ryan’s public persona is different from who he is,” Smith wrote in one of the filings.

When “Civil War” director Alex Garland first met with sound editor Glenn Freemantle (the Oscar-winning “Gravity”) to discuss his nightmarish vision of the combat zones, he emphasized that the secret was conveying the reality of the loud, chaotic gunfire and explosions within each environment.
Freemantle, though, saved the best for last: the distinctive sound of gunfire hitting concrete and metal during the climactic storming of the nation’s capital by the Western rebel forces.
“That particular battle [shot in an Atlanta car lot] is pretty intense because it’s hitting everything, and there’s no mercy in it,” Freemantle told IndieWire. “The thing that occurred to me was the acoustics would be very unique. You’re in the streets there with all these [blockades]. And it’s all metal and concrete, and you’ve got tanks, machine guns, [grenade] launchers, helicopter guns, other guns from distances, and you have it all around you.” Not to mention SUVs crashing...

Netflix reported its first-quarter 2024 earnings Thursday, revealing it added a whopping 9.33 million paid subscribers.
Analysts consensus estimates were for Netflix to add 3.93 million paid subs globally in Q1 (to reach 264.21 million), according to StreetAccount. Per Netflix, it has now climbed to 269.60 million subs as of March 31.
These impressive Q1 results come following a better-than-expected 13.1 million subscribers added for the fourth quarter of 2023, which was a Q4 record for Netflix. Despite this back-to-back growth worth boasting about, Netflix announced Thursday it will stop reporting quarterly sub totals beginning in 2025, a move that is sure to shock an industry that has been fueled by the battle for streaming subscribers for years.
The Q1 2024 lineup that fueled Netflix’s sub growth included its live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” the “Game of Thrones” creator’s sci-fi series “3 Body Problem,” Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentleman,” the latest season of “Love Is Blind,...

Tyler Perry and BET are continuing their fruitful business relationship.
The cable outlet and Perry have signed a new, multi-year content partnership that will have Perry create and produce hundreds more hours of programming for BET and its streaming service, BET+. The deal, which runs through 2028, extends and builds on a relationship that dates back to 2017, when Perry entered into a similar partnership with the conglomerate then known as Viacom (now Paramount Global).
Perry also expressed interest in buying a majority stake in BET when Paramount considered spinning it off last year. The company ultimately decided not to go forward with a sale, and Perry expressed disappointment with the bidding process.
That did not, however, prevent Perry and BET from continuing their partnership. The new deal includes renewals for BET series Sistas, The Oval, Assisted Living and House of Payne and BET+ shows Zatima, Ruthless, All the Queen’s Men and Bruh.

Spoiler Alert: This contains major spoilers for the ending of “Civil War,” now playing in theaters.
“Civil War” production designer Caty Maxey was tasked with building a dystopian America that showed bombed-out buildings and abandoned cars that stretched for miles on the freeway. It was all part of her creative brief for Alex Garland’s latest film.
Garland drops audiences into the middle of “Civil War.” America is no longer united and there are warring factions. At the center of it all are four journalists who travel from New York to Washington, D.C., where the Western Forces of Texas and California are battling the Federal Government. Kirsten Dunst plays Lee, a photojournalist. She is joined by colleagues Joel (Wagner Moura), Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson). Call it the fog of war.
At the height of the blood-soaked third act of Alex Garland’s “Civil War,” audiences may be unsure who is on which side of the battle between two factions in an America torn asunder. The bullets and rockets are flying at such an unyielding clip amid the film’s deafening sound effects that theatergoers will likely struggle to keep score and instead become immersed in the real-life chaos of combat.
In the dystopian thriller set in a not-too-distant future, Kirsten Dunst stars as Lee, a world-weary photojournalist who has seen and shot it all, including “the motherfucking legendary photo of the Antifa massacre.” Heading into the film’s final 30 minutes, Lee has finally embedded with the Western Forces, an alliance of states led by California and Texas in...

Is it happening? Is it not happening? Here’s all the buzz about the drama series All The Queen’s Men. But we do know that the Season 4 would be a continuation of Tyler Perry’s dramatic series!
The series made its first debut on September 9, 2021, on BET+ and has since, aired three seasons altogether.
The series is loosely based on the urban romance novel ‘Ladies Night’ by The Boys and Christian Keyes (Supernatural). All The Queen’s Men is a suspenseful, action-packed, and intriguing story of power in an original and rare scene setting.
Season 3 showed Madam defeat her biggest rival yet – and that might be a potential reason as to why S4 might go in any direction leaving fans rather confused about the future of the series.

He slips effortlessly into the title role in Netflix’s Ripley — all eight episodes are now streaming; I’ve seen the first four — and the lush black-and-white cinematography is a joy to behold. It’s official: Taylor Swift is very, very rich.
The ‘Eras Tour’ singer-songwriter has joined the Forbes World’s Billionaires list, one of 14 celebrities who, according to the magazine, are worth a collective $31 billion. Swift’s achievement is all the more noteworthy, Forbes says, because last October she accomplished “a feat no other musician had before: she became a billionaire strictly off of earnings from her music and performances.”
Also on the list: Dick Wolf, Rihanna, Tyler Perry, Peter Jackson and Oprah Winfrey, among others. Take a look below, along with Forbes’ descriptions..
George Lucas
Net Worth: $5.5 Billion | Age: 79 | Citizenship: U.S.
The Star Wars director, who debuted as a billionaire in 1997, is the richest celebrity thanks in large part to his production company LucasFilm, which he sold to Disney in 2012 for more than $4 billion in cash and stock. Steven Spielberg
Net Worth: $4.8 Billion | Age: 77 | Citizenship: U.

When you picture the co-founder and president of an artificial intelligence film production start-up, odds are, you’re not thinking of someone like Tye Sheridan, an actor and producer who literally got his start when Terence Malick discovered him at age 11 during a casting call for his “The Tree of Life.”
But Sheridan — who is continuing to expand his on-screen range, adding producing into the mix and targeting writing and directing opportunities that would allow him to make films like his heroes Malick, Jeff Nichols, and David Gordon Green — is also the co-founder and president of Wonder Dynamics, a production tools startup that uses AI to scale up visual effects and computer-generated characters. And, ideally, yes, the productions that use those tools will be indie.
Sheridan is clear: The “Wonder Dynamics mission … is to enable Hollywood-level movies on an indie budget.” When Sheridan and visual effects artist Nikola Todorovic first...
