Of all the characters he has embodied to date, the one from the Marvel Cinematic Universe or simply the one Robert Downey Jr. is best known for is quite literally the very character his name is used synonymously with. And yet, it is also the very character that he has seemingly trashed recently. For the record, yes, we are indeed talking about Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.
Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer
At the recently held British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards or simply BAFTAs, Robert Downey Jr. was one of the few honored with the accolade for his outstanding performance in a supporting role in Oppenheimer. But while fans were happy about his win, Rdj ruined it all by criticizing his fan-favorite MCU character in his acceptance speech for “dwindling” his “credibility.”

The cast for The Fantastic Four has been made public by Marvel, with Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Venessa Kirby as Susan Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. Marvel announced this with quite some fanfare on Valentine’s Day 2024, with an image depicting the ‘family’ indoors, wearing their costumes.

Among the many details that were released in the picture, was the fact that Ben Grimm was reading a magazine. It appeared to have a cover that looked exactly like that of Life magazine on the day Lyndon B Johnson took over as the President of the United States after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. This confirmed one thing: The Fantastic Four film will be taking place in the 1960s.

Apparently, there is a Santa Claus. At least for Katharina Stark. For the German actress, picked as one of this year’s European Shooting Stars set to be honored at the 2024 Berlinale as among the continent’s 10 best up-and-coming actors, being in the movies was her Christmas wish.
“I always, always wanted to act, to be in the movies. From as far back as I can remember, I would watch movies, and I wanted to be in them, to live inside them,” says Stark. “So when I was eight years old, that’s what I wished for: to be an actress. My parents gave me a gift certificate, where they wrote they would do everything they could to support my dream and that they would always support me.”
Stark’s folks came through, chauffeuring little Katharina from their town of Illertissen (population 16,000) in rural Bavaria, 90 minutes into Munich, the nearest media hub,...

Christopher Nolan recently proclaimed that the decision to hire Robert Downey Jr. to play Tony Stark in “Iron Man” was “one of the most consequential casting decisions that’s ever been made in the history of the movie business.”
By the end of this decade, the same might be said for the four actors who were just cast as the titular superheroes in Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four”: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Like Downey, all of these actors have had recent experiences with big-budget productions — Pascal with “The Mandalorian” and “The Last of Us,” Kirby with the two most recent “Mission: Impossible” films, Quinn with “Stranger Things” and Moss-Bachrach with “Andor.” But, also like Downey, none of them have headlined their own studio action blockbuster before signing up with Marvel.

Imperium’s game plan worked to perfection for most of the match, with The Ring General picking off the scraps left behind by Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci. Jey brought his team back to life once he was tagged in, with Gunther continuing to avoid his “Main Event” problem. Eventually, The Ring General was left with no choice but to battle Uso, using vicious chops to drop him. Gunther thought he had the match won following a brutal clothesline,...

It's been almost five years since Game of Thrones wrapped up its wildly popular run on HBO.
But while the show might have consistently delivered stellar ratings, it didn't always leave viewers feeling satisfied.
In fact, half a decade after the controversial Game of Thrones series finale, any mention of the series is still more likely to elicit complaints than fond memories from people who would've once described themselves as devoted fans.
Why such a rapid reversal of opinion?
Well, Game of Thrones' lackluster final season is the most obvious culprit, but the criticism began long before Daenerys turned to the dark side.
The show's ability to generate controversy and debate among fans was one of the keys to its early success.
Unfortunately, by the time Bran Stark came out of left field to claim the Iron Throne, the chorus of criticism was far louder than the smattering of praise.

A decade and a half after the 2008 premiere of Marvel's "Iron Man," it's hard to remember a time without it. The film took a lesser-known comic book character and turned him into the most popular member of the Avengers, made him a cultural phenomenon, and changed the landscape of popular film as we know it. The film helped to revive Robert Downey Jr.'s career after his battle with substance abuse and made him one of the most beloved names in the geek world.
When we meet Tony Stark, he's kind of a jerk. He's rich, inherited his father's company, makes weapons of mass destruction, and he's really full of himself. However, when he's ambushed during a weapons test in Afghanistan and ends up in the hands of the terrorist organization the Ten Rings, he's gravely injured and shoved in a cave with fellow prisoner Yinsen (Shaun Toub). Lord Eddard Stark, aka Ned, is an admired character from HBO’s Game of Thrones series, where he is the King of Winterfell and father to Rob, Arya, Sansa, Bran and Rickon Stark. Stark is iconically played by Sean Bean in Game of Thrones Season 1. Bean gave the character a respectable and righteous aura that made fans root for him to be the next king of Westeros after the death of King Baratheon. He is the king’s hand now, but Queen Cersei goes against him when he finds out that her children are illegitimate. This confrontation leads to the battle...

If you keep up with superhero movies, you probably know how Marvel Studios started as an underdog and became a behemoth. The omnipresent Cinematic Universe all started with 2008's "Iron Man," which was far from a guaranteed hit; the title character was a B-list comic star at best, and comeback vehicles (like this was for Robert Downey Jr.) can be anything but.
According to the recent behind-the-scenes book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards, even the film's writers didn't initially know if it would work. Their concerns went back to the source material. The most famous "Iron Man" comic was and is "Demon in a Bottle", about Tony Stark succumbing to and then beating alcoholism.
During the Bronze Age of Comics (the 1970s), superhero stories gestured to social relevance. "The Reign of Marvel Studios" says that writers weren't keen on such a premise being a blockbuster hit,...

Akira Tozawa gave his best effort against Shinsuke Nakamura but fell short. Tozawa looked great until he missed a Senton Bomb. Nakamura took advantage, finishing off the Alpha Academy hopeful with the Kinshasa.

Back when the original "Iron Man" was released in 2008, no one could have anticipated that this was the beginning of a box office behemoth of an interconnected series of comic book movie franchises that would come to be known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though the post-credits scene for "Iron Man" teased the eventual assembly of Marvel's Avengers, not even Kevin Feige was certain they'd be able to pull it off so swimmingly. But today, with over 30 movies, an ever-expanding roster of TV shows, and billions of box office dollars later, the MCU is one of the most successful cinematic experiments in motion picture history.

This post contains spoilers for Loki
What, exactly, has been Loki‘s glorious purpose? The second season debuted at a fallow point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with troubles both onscreen and off. But the show has proven to be remarkably entertaining, building to a penultimate episode that stands among the best things that Marvel has ever done.
After the explosion of the temporal loom in episode four, episode five found Loki time slipping to various timeline branches, gathering Casey, Mobius, and other members of the Tva, who are apparently living their pre-tva lives. With the help of Ob, Loki gathers the Tva team together, hoping to prevent reality from devolving into spaghetti.
The episode ends with Loki realizing that he can control his time slips and bring himself to any point in time, going back before Victor Timely exploded into silly string. What does this mean for the finale and for the MCU?...

At this stage, everyone knows the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a tough place. And it's not just about widespread so-called "superhero fatigue": We have far too much of the MCU, but the films have also suffered from lackluster scripts and some truly horrendous CGI that seems to be the product of overworked VFX artists being pushed to produce results in unrealistic time frames. No wonder those VFX artists are fed up with Marvel.
There's also the issue of these ubiquitous Disney+ shows, which seem to come and go without making any sort of impact at all. Joss Whedon even predicted Marvel's modern day MCU woes back in 2015, highlighting the dangers of "serialized storytelling," and its tendency to "turn the motion picture experience into episodic TV," which ultimately just makes every supposed "storyline" feel more like a way to set up some future event.
So, what can save Marvel during such tumultuous times?...

Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe became far too ubiquitous, it was but a glimmer in the eye of producer and self-professed fanboy Kevin Feige. The head of Marvel Studios always had a grand vision, even when the first movie in phase one of the MCU, 2008's "Iron Man," debuted and changed Hollywood forever. It wasn't enough to have scored a hit, Feige needed world domination. And he'd get it.
But before he could shovel endless amounts of superhero media down our collective gullets, the ambitious producer needed to lay the foundation for his master plan of a shared cinematic universe. In order to do that, Feige would do what so many studios have tried and failed to do in the wake of his example — take the necessary time to establish each character and their world. That took the form of several mostly standalone films that introduced all the characters...

Although Coup! has a small cast and unfolds mostly in a secluded mansion during the 1918 influenza pandemic, it packs a lot of flavor, suspense and droll comedy into its slim 97-minute running time, making it fun enough to deserve an exclamation point in its title. Peter Sarsgaard offers a sly, juicy performance as a shady chef who weasels his way into the home of an entitled young heir (Billy Magnussen). Soon, the upstart is turning the servants and family members against the hypocritical patriarch, who fancies himself a progressive. A collaborative effort between writer-directors Austin Stark (The God Committee, The Runner) and Joseph Schuman, this satirical work is hardly profound or subtle about the parallels with the present-day class conflict, but it wears its screw-the-rich subtext with insouciant breeziness.

“Maudie” director Aisling Walsh describes her upcoming feature, “Ethel,” in recognizable terms. “We all understand what it is to struggle to be the best at what we can,” Walsh tells Variety. “We’re all looking for that chance to make something happen.”
Written by Celeste Parr, produced by Marie-Claude Poulin (“Brooklyn”) of Sphere Media, and presented at this year’s Venice Production Bridge gap-financing market, “Ethel” tells the true story of Ethel Stark – a trailblazing Canadian musician who broke barriers when she founded a mixed-race, all-female orchestra in the 1940s. A violinist and conductor, Stark eventually brought her Montreal-based ensemble all the way to Carnegie Hall, becoming the first to woman to conduct there.
“Shtisel” and “Unorthodox” lead Shira Haas is attached to star – as revealed exclusively in Variety – with the Canadian-Irish co-production aiming to shoot next year.
“The film is about women finding their voice,” says Walsh. “The orchestra changed their lives.

The kind of self-flaggellation the Left does is something you never see from the Right.
The Left’s fears about being in a bubble, about not doing enough to understand the other side, about their own overreach, are a phenomenon unique to liberals. There does not need to be a New York Times Pitchbot for the Right. Ben Shapiro is not issuing a blistering movie review takedown of a Dinesh D’Souza documentary that went too far and didn’t listen enough to the other side.
And now there’s “Coup!” Politically muddled at best, something Ron DeSantis would happily introduce at Cpac at worst, this populist satire from directors Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman is an Adam McKay-lite class-war confection looking to have it both ways. The 1 percent may be enjoying some serious #lifegoals at the minute, but they’ve been having something of a tough time on screen. Parasite, Triangle of Sadness and The Menu are just a few recent films that have shifted the power dynamics away from the super wealthy and into the hands of those grubby lower classes, with sometimes deadly results. Coup! — from Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman, who both wrote and directed, and closing the Venice Days sidebar — is set to join this growing list.
Set during the 1918 Spanish Flu, the darkly comic thriller stars Billy Magnussen as Jay, a progressive, velvet-slippered U.S. journalist sheltering from the chaos with his family — and their servants — on a swanky island estate (all the while penning angry articles that suggest he’s in the thick of it in New York). But when Peter Sarsgaard’s mysterious grifter Floyd shows up as their cook,...

For as much as HBO's "Game of Thrones" became known for its excessive sexuality and big-budget blockbuster sequences, it had gained notoriety early on for something simpler: Killing off fan-favorite characters, and refusing anything like a happy ending. While that came straight from the source material, George R.R. Martin's long-running series of fantasy novels, it also defied conventional television wisdom, leaving the show with a complicated legacy.
For instance, the death of de facto protagonist Ned Stark (Sean Bean) in the penultimate episode of the show's first season was shocking and brutal. Considering he was played by a movie star and was one of the few genuinely good-hearted people in the show, his execution spoke to the show's ambition. If he could die, anybody could. And they often did.

That ’70s Show is no doubt a staple of popular culture and a TV series that raised generations. One such character that made that happen is none other than Don Stark‘s Bob Pinciotti. However, the actor definitely had other memorable roles up his sleeves. From the groovy vibes of the 1970s to the radical dawn of the 1990s, Stark delighted audiences with his performances. But perhaps it was his role in That ’70s Show that truly endeared him to audiences. He brought to life a humorous and lovable father figure. His undeniable chemistry with the talented cast and knack for...

Gwyneth Paltrow, the Oscar-winning actress and lifestyle entrepreneur, answered one Marvel Cinematic Universe fan’s burning question in a rare Instagram Q&a Wednesday afternoon, addressing why she hasn’t appeared in a Marvel project since “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.
“I ask this every time, answer the question,” the commenter said, writing in to the Goop founder’s call for questions. “Why did you stop with Marvel and do you miss Rdj [Robert Downey Jr.]?”
Humorously, in the midst of answering questions about books, beauty products, fame and motherhood, Paltrow obliged.
“Oh my god stop yelling at me!” she said. “I didn’t, I just, it just — we just stopped doing it because Iron Man died and why do you need Pepper Potts without Iron Man? I don’t know!”
She also joked that concerned parties should take it up with Marvel instead of her.

Love Island USA has been filled with drama since it returned to Peacock last month, but we didn't expect the show's host to get caught up in it.
The series aired a dramatic installment Friday night that found someone being dumped from the island, leading to some of the wildest scenes in Love Island History.
So, how did we get to that controversial moment?
Sarah Hyland arrived in Fiji at the villa, serving looks and the results of the latest public vote.
She revealed Keenan Anunay's time in the villa searching for love was over.
Vickala "Kay Kay" Gray, who had been coupled up with Keenan, announced her decision to leave alongside him.
"I would like to voluntarily also leave," she said.

It’s not often that a host of a dating competition show gets called out, but Sarah Hyland found herself in the middle of Love Island USA drama in the Peacock series’ August 18 episode. During that installment, contestant Keenan Anunay was sent home after receiving the fewest votes, and Vickala “Kay Kay” Gray announced her decision to go home, too. “I would like to voluntarily also leave,” she said. “I feel like I found what I came here for, and I’d like to leave with Keenan.” Some contestants applauded Gray’s decision, but Hyland wanted to make sure that was the Texas native’s final answer, so to speak. “Before you go anywhere, I just — I want to make sure that you are absolutely happy with your decision,” Hyland told Gray. “No regrets,” Gray replied. And that’s when fellow Season 5 contestant Mike Stark entered the chat. “Why are you saying it like that?...

A video from the U.S. version of “Love Island” featuring an awkward interaction between a contestant and host Sarah Hyland has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), generating 2.2 million views and counting.
In a clip from the Peacock reality show, contestant Keenan Anunay has just been eliminated — which led to his partner, Kay Kay Gray, announcing she’d be leaving along with him.
“You’re too good for me,” Anunay told Gray, who responded by telling him, “You’re perfect.”

We all know "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" to be one of the funniest films of all time. What the film gets less credit for is being remarkably ingenuous in its use of limited resources. In the finale of Secret Invasion, Emilia Clarke’s G’iah inherited a litany of MCU character superpowers, as Gravik’s (Kingsley Ben-Adir) plan to become a God-like Skrull backfired, resulting in his death. With G’iah now being seemingly invincible, director Ali Selim is opening up about how the choice and the G’iah-Gravik super-powered fight came to be.
“It starts with Kevin Feige saying, ‘Any and all superpowers are fair game. Have fun,’ and then we storyboarded it. We would be like, ‘What are the superpowers that would happen next?'” Selim tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And then we would go through stunts and understand what superpowers can happen next and what can’t, just because of the physical positioning of the actors. And then, with VFX, some things just couldn’t work because they looked funny shifting from this to that in an instant.”

Written and directed by Jim Towns, whose previous credits include House of Bad and The Possession of Anne, End Times follows a pair of mismatched travelers, Claire and Freddie (Bernadette and Stark), as they try to escape a deadly pandemic that has turned Los Angeles into a zombie-infested wasteland. Claire is a privileged young suburbanite ill-equipped to survive in this hostile new landscape, until she meets Freddie, a retired soldier who lost his daughter to the virus. As they travel together to reach the perimeter, Freddie teaches Claire the skills that will enable Claire to survive, and the uneasy partnership between the two grows into something more akin to a father/daughter relationship.

Lawrence Turman Dies: Oscar-Nominated Producer Of ‘The Graduate’, ‘American History X’ & More Was 96
Oscar-nominated producer Lawrence Turman died Saturday at the Motion Picture and Television Country Home and Hospital. He was 96. He had a stellar career not only as a producer of such seminal films as The Graduate (1967), The Great White Hope (1970), American History X (1998) and many more in a producing career that lasted six decades, but he also took a significant turn when he left his partnership with producer David Foster to head the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at USC in 1991, an association that continued until his retirement just two years ago.
His son, John Turman, confirmed the death to Deadline. “Our father Lawrence Turman passed away late yesterday,” he said. “It’s sad, but he had a long and storied life, and it’s the passing of an era.” He added that the MPTF is planning a memorial service as well as USC at a later date.

In the mid 2000’s, comic book films were largely becoming accepted as massive box office draws that had the potential to make or break an actor’s career. Ben Affleck was trying to distance himself from his role as Matt Murdock in the critically panned Daredevil, Tobey Maguire was hanging up his Spidey-suit for (seemingly forever) and even Chris Evans was scarred from his role as Johnny Storm in the disappointing Fantastic Four series. And before we saw Affleck dawn the mantle of the world’s greatest detective, before Tobey swung his way back into the spotlight, and before Evans would secure his role as one of the most iconic superheroes of all time- Marvel was Seriously in need of some movie maintenance.

For nearly 100 years, pundits have predicted the outcome of Oscar voting. Sometimes it’s an educated guess, but it’s a guess nevertheless, since a minimal number of PricewaterhouseCoopers execs know the actual tallies and they never talk. So pundits often look to Oscar history to back up their theories, like tribal natives trying to predict their future by watching smoke from a volcano.
Too often, people talk about voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences as if they work as a unit: “They will never vote for this” or “they always love such-and-such.” One of the fun aspects of predictions is that Academy history is like Scripture: You can always find something to back up your claims.
This year, voters nominated 10 very different films for best picture. Each has inspired predictions about why it couldn’t win because “they” won’t go for it. But actually,...
