The UK film and TV sector’s new body to tackle bullying and harassment is ramping up by appointing BFI Director of Culture and Inclusion Jen Smith as Interim CEO on secondment.
The Independent Stands Authority (Isa), which has financial backing from all major UK broadcasters and Sky, will formalize the Isa’s remit, structure and establish funding arrangements for 2024 launch.
Smith will also seek to broaden the Isa’s scope to those working in music, theater, fashion and advertising, the body said.
Developed in partnership with the BFI, Bafta, Time’s Up UK and its Chair Heather Rabbatts, the Isa meets long-time calls to establish a cross-industry arbiter for bullying and harassment issues.
Smith said it will “have the power to lead investigations and will do so without fear or favour,” as she is seconded there from the BFI until a permanent CEO is recruited when the Isa is fully up-and-running.

Research by Raising Films paints stark picture of deregulation.
There are “unlawful, invisible and unfair” employment practices that discriminate against parents and carers in the UK film and TV industry, according to a new report.
Research carried out by Raising Films found that the UK screen sector suffers from a “precarious and exploitative culture” because off “casualised labour practices, deregulation, deunionisation and persistent ignorance of the wider legislative employment framework within the UK”.
This has resulted in parents and carers not being granted the employment rights available to them and “offered no system for speaking out”.
The report, titled ‘Raising our Game: Next Steps for the UK Film and Television Industry’, is the result of six months research, with evidence gathered from workers, employers, leaders and academics. The BFI supported the research with National Lottery funding.

Bruce Springsteen delighted a couple in New Jersey last week by offering to pose with them for their engagement pictures. Newly-engaged Ed Dwyer and Jennifer Smith were having their picture taken in Manasquan Inlet in New Jersey to celebrate the happy occasion when they spotted The Boss sitting on a nearby bench.
The couple stopped the shoot to ask their hero for an autograph and the star went one step further by improvising a song for the pair and offering to pose with them in their pictures. The photographs show the musician strumming on a guitar as he sits next to the happy couple.
Snapper Kella MacPhee tells the New York Daily News, "Bruce rolled up his sleeves and improvised a song about them getting married. He was really great, really cool - a nice guy."...

Filmmakers Mischa Perez and Richard Myles of Viper Productions got in touch with comments and some exclusive photos from their new fright film Mental Scars, which was lensed in Indiana and recently premiered in Raleigh, Nc. The movie stars Myles (who has previously played Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees in fan films) as David Taggart, the last survivor of a massacred Native American tribe who lurks in a junkyard built over his people’s burial ground, and murders unwary intruders.
“Mental Scars was a monumental project for me, because I played so many important roles in addition to David Taggart,” says Myles, who also scripted the movie with John Dalton, composed the score and was one of the executive producers. “I had to get used to wearing the makeup and bandages all over my face.
