He was the oldest living U.S. Olympic medalist. He won the bronze medal in the long jump at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London.
He attended Xavier University of Louisiana, then transferred to the University of Pittsburgh on a football scholarship. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education, and stayed for a master's degree in education.
