Night of the Caregiver sounds like a Lifetime movie about a psycho home health aid. It’s actually a new supernatural horror film from producer Alexander Nevsky and director/co-star Joe Cornet two men better known for Westerns and action films than scary stuff. Can they successfully make the switch?
Julia Rowe has been taken an assignment as an in-home caregiver for Lillian Gresham, a sweet old lady who, of course, lives in the middle of nowhere. It’s Friday night but, “It pays really well, more for one night than I make in a week”, which should also be a red flag.
And we know something isn’t right due to the prologue that gives way to a scene from “13 hours earlier” where Detective Roman Eckhart (Joe Cornet), of the NYPD,...

Review: After directing four Westerns in a row, Joe Cornet has switched things up and made his horror debut with Night of the Caregiver – and he brought several Rio Bravo collaborators along with him: producer Alexander Nevsky, writer Craig Hamann, and cast members Natalie Denise Sperl and Anna Oris.
Now that Cornet is working in the horror genre, he doesn’t waste any time getting to the good stuff. There’s no holding back from letting viewers know there’s a demonic creature in the mix. Within the first minute, the camera has roamed through a creepy house, we’ve seen the hand of a monster that’s making its way around the location, and...

The upcoming western Taken from Rio Bravo has received its first trailer and we’re pleased to present it exclusively here on JoBlo!
The action-packed trailer starts off with an attempted robbery that results in juuuust about everybody getting a bullet to the chest courtesy of one nasty gunslinger. He joins forces with the seemingly more cautious sheriff, out to find his soon-to-be bride, nabbed by a group of bastards who take women over the border into Mexico. Judging by the trailer, Taken from Rio Bravo looks to be a tightly constructed picture with plenty of gunplay. And yes, that is our very own John Fallon in the trailer!
The official plot synopsis of Taken from Rio Bravo: “The action western sees the return of the mysterious Russian gunslinger who teams up with a sheriff in pursuit of a gang of sadistic human traffickers known as The Posse, who have kidnapped five women.

Ready for some good old-fashioned artistic propaganda, Soviet-style Russian filmmakers tried to make film grammar into an emotional-intellectual science, and these pro-Revolution masterpieces by Vsevolod Pudovkin are terrific lessons in cinematic persuasion. The first two commemorate big moments in proletarian revolt. The third heads east to Soviet Mongolia for an even more powerful demonstration of Pure Kino-Power harnessed to political ends. With plenty of extras including informed, insightful (and needed) audio commentaries.

Let us look back at the history of Russian propaganda films. The standard-bearer must be Sergei Eisenstein’s 1938 “Alexander Nevsky,” a Stalinist-era epic centered on the hero Prince Alexander, who drove out the Romans in the 13th century. The barely-veiled subtext of that film, however, was a depiction of Russo-German relations as the war loomed ahead, with a call to arms for citizens and a clear warning to would-be attackers. I’ve no idea how effective it was at reaching its propagandistic goals, but the film itself is gorgeous and filled with inventive effects, and Eisenstein accomplished at least the feat of cinematic excellence.
Flash forward to 2018, and the quality of Russian propaganda films has fallen dramatically. Case in point: “Maximum Impact,” a joint Russian-American action comedy about a top-secret summit meeting between the American secretary of state and Russian head of state, with the goal of shoring up relations between the two countries.

Casper Van Dien is keeping busy. With an average of five movies a year accompanied by a number of TV appearances, it's safe to say that Van Dien is one of the hardest working actors in the business and he lends his experience to any number of fledgling productions.
One such project making its debut on digital and VOD today is Showdown in Manila from first time director Mark Dacascos. The project, a co-production between Russian and the Philippines, stars Van Dien and Russian action star Alexander Nevsky as private detectives living and working in Manila.
While working on a murder investigation, the pair find themselves in the middle of a terrorist plot and not trusting the local police, they assemble a team of their own to take down the terrorist known as The Wrath.

To celebrate Sergei Eisenstein’s 120th birthday, the folks at Google have released the incredible gif above as their doodle for January 22nd, 2018.
Born this day in 1898, Sergei Eisenstein was a Soviet artist and avantgarde director of several groundbreaking films, including Battleship Potemkin, Strike, and The General Line.
Known as the father of montage — the film technique of editing a fast-paced sequence of short shots to transcend time or suggest thematic juxtapositions — Eisenstein deployed arresting images in sequences of psychological precision. His films were also revolutionary in another sense, as he often depicted the struggle of downtrodden workers against the ruling class.
Today, we celebrate his 120th birthday with a tribute to his pioneering technique. Happy birthday, Sergei Eisenstein!

Only those still obsessively watching videocassettes of their favorite '80s and '90s-era B-movie actioners will find anything of interest in Showdown in Manila. And even they may decide that nostalgia has its limits when it comes to Mark Dacascos' directorial debut starring co-starring Alexander Nevsky and Casper Van Dien. A mishmash of action movie and buddy-cop clichés rendered in incompetent fashion, this wink-wink homage to 1991's Showdown in Little Tokyo makes its inspiration seem like a classic.

Of the 90 people whose votes determine Sunday night’s Golden Globes awards, only one is a filmmaker. That’s the belief of Hollywood Foreign Press member Alexander Nevsky, the 6’6″, 280-pound Russian (real name: Sasha Kuritsyn) who starred opposite Sherilyn Fenn and the late David Carradine in “Treasure Raiders” (2007) and made his directorial debut in “Black Rose” (2014), which is now streaming on Netflix. (The Los Angeles Times called it “an impressively thorough compendium of ’80s cop picture clichés” with “moldy dialogue.”) He’s also a three-time Mr. Universe and 10-time author: The title of his first book translates as, “How to Become Schwarzenegger in Russia.”

Nevsky’s film career began in 1993, when he starred in a televised Russian documentary about bodybuilding. “About 50 million people watched it. The next day I woke up, and I was popular,” Nevsky told IndieWire by phone from Century City.

The first week of January each year, the American Film Institute Awards lunch is one of the more relaxed Hollywood gatherings. Top players involved with the 10 movie and 10 TV winners know all they have to do is comfortably socialize for an hour or so, eat their salmon, and applaud 20 clips.

Actress Kristanna Loken has established herself as one to call when you need a tough woman who can kick ass, something she established in the 1999 TV series Mortal Kombat: Conquest, followed with playing the T-x in 2003’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. After making a couple movies with the infamous Uwe Boll including Bloodrayne, Loken got the role to play Painkiller Jane in the 2007 Sci-Fi Channel show based on the comics.
While she seemingly hasn’t been as visible in recent years, she can now be seen in the crime-thriller Black Rose, a Russian-American collaborative film that’s finally hitting these shores. It’s directed by, and stars, Russian bodybuilder Alexander Nevsky as a Russian super-cop who is brought to L.A. to help solve the murders of a few Russian women there. He’s partnered with profiler Emily Smith (Loken) as they try to find clues to find the ruthless killer.

A cross-cultural buddy-cop flick so bottom-of-the-barrel it would've been hooted off screens even when such things were in commercial demand, Black Rose pairs a rookie profiler and a Russian loose cannon on the trail of a serial killer. Viewers noting a surprising lack of charisma on the part of that loose cannon won't be surprised to learn that bodybuilder-turned-actor Alexander Nevsky is also the pic's director and came up with the plot, evidently hoping to follow in the footsteps of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, et al. Judging from this effort, he hasn't got a chance.
