In the wake of a new documentary film about the "West Memphis Three," authorities in Arkansas are taking another look at the 19-year-old murders of three young boy scouts.
The revelation was made at a Wednesday hearing on a suit filed by Pam Hicks and John Mark Byers, two of the parents of the victims who are seeking access to police evidence in the case. During the court proceeding, Arkansas officials revealed there is an "ongoing investigation" into new affidavits made as a result of the documentary.
The film, "West of Memphis," examines the police investigation into the 1993 murders of three 8-year-old boys, Christopher Byers, Steven Branch and Michael Moore, in West Memphis. It also chronicles the arrest and ultimate release of Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley Jr. and Jason Baldwin -– the trio dubbed the "West Memphis Three."

The case of the West Memphis Three is one of the longest-running cases of legal injustice in modern American history. In 1993, three teenagers from White Trash Central, aka West Memphis, Arkansas – Damien Echols, Jesse Misskelley, Jr. and Jason Baldwin – were convicted of the brutal rape, torture and murder of three little boys, Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers. As depicted in the unforgettable, made-for-hbo documentary Paradise Lost: The Child Murders of Robin Hood Hills, the West Memphis Three were found guilty of murder mostly because they were black-clad, heavy-metal kids in the middle of a deeply disturbed community desperate to pin such a heartbreaking crime on the a group of obvious misfits. The story continues in Paradise Lost 2: Revelations, Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory and now producer Peter Jackson‘s West of Memphis, which premiered at Sundance, introduces three new witnesses to corroborate the Three’s innocence. /Film]

I've been following the story of the West Memphis Three for the last ten years. I was hooked when I first saw the HBO documentary Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills. Since then I've been following everything surrounding the case of with Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jesse Misskelley, and like many of the other people that know of this sad tale, I've been waiting for the day of their release... that day has come and gone. With the help of filmmaker Peter Jackson the investigation of these murders were able to continue, and these investigators brought information to light proving that these three men have been wrongly imprisoned for the last 18 years.
This Jackson produced documentary West of Memphis was directed by Amy Berg, and it takes the audience through a frustratingly long journey of how these boys were part of a modern day witch hunt...

Reality is always stranger than fiction, but when we're talking about the West Memphis Three, it continues to grow stranger still. Today there's more information pertaining to the upcoming West of Memphis documentary, which indicates a new direction for the case that could finally lead to the real killer.
According to Deadline, West of Memphis will feature some recently obtained evidence that may have bearing on the future of this case. The documentary was screened for press in New York and Los Angeles last week with the stipulation that one scene was missing. Deadline alleges that this scene will be reinstated in the film for its Sundance premiere today.
To coincide with this news, it seems that Damien Echols issued a press release today that may allude to the missing scene in West of Memphis:
Terry Hobbs’ nephew, Michael Hobbs, Jr., allegedly told his friends, “My uncle Terry murdered those three little boys,...

Peter Jackson's "West of Memphis" documentary reveals fresh allegations in the 1993 murder case of of three young boys in Arkansas. In the documentary, screening at Sundance Friday, three new witnesses undergo polygraph tests. They declared under penalty of perjury that the nephew of Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of one of the young victims, told them his uncle was behind the murders. According to lawyers working on the so-called West Memphis 3 case, three friends of Michael Hobbs Jr. came forward a few weeks ago after seeing a "48 Hours" special on...

The first press screening for the Peter Jackson produced documentary West of Memphis hit Sundance this morning (we haven't seen it yet, but will before the festival is through), and along with the first screening comes some news for the real world as well as the film industry. While those who have been keeping up with the HBO documentary series Paradise Lost think this new documentary has nothing else to offer, a press release (via Deadline) was just unveiled which announces three new key witnesses in the investigation of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley along with the name of the real killer. As children, local boy Michael Hobbs Jr. apparently told his friends "my uncle Terry murdered those three little boys." Each of the new witnesses were placed under a polygraph and testified under penalty of purjury: "One day Michael picked us up in his truck. He was...

Update: The film’s first screening is still going on, but a release has just been sent out from Echols’ legal team about the new revelations that are in the Amy Berg-directed Peter Jackson produced film and came from a WM3 tipline arranged by the legal team fighting to get the three defendants exonerated. Here is the release:
(Mountain Home, Arkansas – January 20, 2012) Terry Hobbs’ nephew, Michael Hobbs Jr., allegedly told his friends “my uncle Terry murdered those three little boys,” according to declarations under penalty of perjury recently given to Damien Echols’ defense team. The three new witnesses were polygraphed about what they stated Michael Hobbs, Jr. told them.
“One day Michael picked us up in his truck. He was very quiet and upset. Michael then said to us, ‘you are not going to believe what my dad told me today. My Uncle Terry murdered the three little boys.

Hollywoodnews.com: The Peter Jackson-produced “West of Memphis,” which extends the research done by the “Paradise Lost” series of documentaries, played the Sundance Film Festival this morning, revealing a surprise few expected.
New witnesses who claim they know the real murderer.
Attorneys for the West Memphis Three, who recently were released after pleading guilty to crimes they continue to say they didn’t commit, say that three new witnesses, all friends of Michael Hobbs, Jr., have come forward to claim that Hobbs told them that “my uncle Terry [Hobbs] murdered those three little boys.”
As THR notes, Terry Hobbs’ DNA was “found in a shoelace used to restrain one of the victims … [and] has been a subject of much speculation despite never having been charged with a crime. Indeed, he figures prominently in the last third of the most recent ‘Paradise Lost’ film, ‘Purgatory,’ because he was...

The West Memphis 3 murder case, examined in the "Paradise Lost" series, just got more complicated. "West of Memphis," the new doc screening here at Sundance, features new information from three witnesses about Terry Hobbs, who has been under suspicion since the 1993 murders but has categorically denied any accusations. It get's confusing, but here it is: Michael Hobbs, Sr., brother of Terry Hobbs (the stepfather of one of the murdered boys, Stavie Branch), told his son, Michael Hobbs Jr, that Terry killed the three kids. Michael, Jr. then tells three witnesses what he was told. All three gave written statements to the WM3 defense team, two of them went on camera for the Wom movie in the past few weeks, just in time for it to be screened at its frist Sundance P&I screening this morning. The news come after speculation of a new interview that was scheduled to be shown at Sundance.

When we started to hear about West of Memphis, the new documentary about the West Memphis Three (Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley) produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, and directed by Amy Berg, the big question was: what will this movie offer? The movie was born out of an investigation funded by Jackson and Walsh that seeks to find the real identity of the killer who ended the lives of three young boys in 1993. And it turns out the film might have an ace up its sleeve. While the first press screening is going on right now in Sundance, a press release has been sent out announcing that the movie reveals testimony from three witnesses who bolster accusations that the murders were really committed by a man named Terry Hobbs. Hobbs was the stepfather of one of the murder victims, and has long been linked to the case via DNA evidence.

It's easy enough to sit through the Broadway production of "Elf" and feel yourself transforming into Scrooge. That, however, would mistakenly suggest it is easy to sit through "Elf."
The play, like the 2003 Will Ferrell movie, is about a guy who thinks he's an elf, but is actually human. Buddy (Sebastian Arcelus, "Jersey Boys," "Wicked") is not as fast as the others in making toys, or in much else. Then, one day, Buddy overhears two elves talking and discovers the truth.
"I can't believe you didn't see this coming," Santa tells Buddy, "You're 6'2" and I have to order your tights on Amazon."
Santa urges Buddy to visit his dad, who works in the Empire State Building. Buddy asks what New York is like, and the sage advice Santa dispenses is, "There are like 30 Rays Pizza and they all say they are the original. It's on 6th Avenue and 11th Street.

Just because something is dressed up in candy cane stripes and features a fat guy in a red Santa suit doesn't automatically make it an instant feel-good Christmas classic.
Santa, by the way, is George Wendt (Norm, of Cheers fame) and is the smartest person in the production - he's barely on stage. When he is, he's fine. Wendt sings a little, reminds the audience in a clever enough way to turn off their cell phones, and open their candy in the beginning of the show.
It's wonderful when a seasonal show lures in audience members who would not normally go to the theater. This becomes painfully obvious when the woman behind him me screamed "Norm" whenever Wendt entered and the man in front of me...
