Last week, more than 400 TV creators and showrunners — all of them women — sent letters to top executives at Hollywood studios demanding that specific safety protocols be put in place for pregnant employees in states where abortion has been outlawed, or soon will be. Now, letters of support signed by 594 men — including J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Greg Berlanti, Donald Glover, Aaron Sorkin, David E. Kelley, Taika Waititi and Ryan Murphy — have been sent to the same companies.
The text of the letter is short, simply saying the undersigned stand with their “female, trans & non-binary showrunner colleagues in demanding a response from our employers regarding the imminent crisis” at hand. It was delivered by replying-all to the first letter, and was sent to Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount, Apple, NBC Universal, Amazon, Lionsgate and AMC.
These activist correspondences have been instigated by the Supreme Court’s June 24 Dobbs decison, which overturned Roe v.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Hannibal Season 2, Episode 11: “Ko No Mono”
Directed by David Slade
Written by Jeff Vlaming, Andrew Black, and Bryan Fuller
Airs Fridays at 10pm Et on NBC
Well surprise, surprise…but not really.
I would hasten a guess that very few of us who populate Hannibal‘s savvy audience would have fallen for this trick, laid out as it was so very carefully throughout the narrative. In any case, now the jig is up: Alana is in on the play, Freddie Lounds is indeed alive, and Jack Crawford is taking more gambits than I can count. But let’s start from the top, shall we…
The episode opens with yet another misleading sequence, although exactly how misleading the gorgeously shot Will-digo transformation/birth scene really is remains to be seen—after all, we still don’t know with any certainty who arranged the Randall exhibit, or whose body was sent...

Hannibal Episode 206
“Futamono”
Written By: Andy Black, Bryan Fuller, Steve Lightfoot, and Scott Nimerfro
Directed By: Tim Hunter
Original Airdate: 4 April 2014
In This Episode…
Jack goes to see Will, and tells him that Hannibal was nearly killed by the man who killed the bailiff and the judge. The only important part of that “story” is that the orderly didn’t kill the judge - that was the Ripper. And nothing Will said made that happen - it just happened. He also knows why the Ripper kills in quick succession: if he waits too long, the meat spoils. Jack is surprised that the Ripper eats his victims, and equates him to Hobbs - a likeness that Will quickly erases: “Hobbs ate his victims to honor them. Hannibal eats his victims because to him, people are no better than pigs.” Will thinks he is going to hold a dinner party soon, and...

Hannibal Season 1, Episode 10 ‘Buffet Froid’
Directed by John Dahl
Written by Andy Black & Chris Brancato and Bryan Fuller
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Et on NBC
(Randy is filling in for Ricky this week – you can read Randy’s reviews for other Hannibal episodes at Processed Media.)
Underneath the dense psychology of ‘Buffet Froid’ is a pretty fantastic little ghost story, albeit one told in Hannibal fashion, where the mind of the ghost proves to be more interesting than her gory actions. Maybe I’m just reeling from the great news that NBC renewed Hannibal for a second season (seriously: good fucking job, NBC), but ‘Buffet Froid’ was a beautiful little hour of drama, a bit hard to follow at times, but ultimately a satisfying – and oddly, emotionally touching – episode.
Our crime of the week material comes in the form of a girl named Georgia – a decrepit girl who possibly is...

Earnest romantic drama set against the backdrop of the 1974 miners' strike. By Peter Bradshaw
Andy Mark Simpson's first feature is heartfelt, but a bit soap-operaish – especially in the sudden blazing rows that spring up. In a Northumbrian village in 1974, a community is torn apart by the miner's strike. Andy Black plays Mark, who infuriates the strikers by doing scab labour to save up for his studies. And Mark has grownup problems that Billy Elliot never had to worry about: he is going out with a girl (Jennifer Bryden) who nobody likes much. It's warmhearted, with evidence that Simpson will have more to offer in his next film.
Rating: 2/5

Orcs! ArtworkThe writers at Quiet Earth have dug up a comedic gem with the thriller, comedy Orcs!. This film takes those mythical beasts from the Lord of the Rings movie series and slaps them down into present day. Here, they take on a group of Park Rangers, who are clearly outmatched. Chaos ensues and fans of both comedy and horror need to check out the first trailer for this Archstone Distribution production below.
The synopsis for the movie is here:
"Orcs! Orcs! Orcs! are battle ready, ugly, peeved and pouring out of the mountain to wreak havoc and destruction on outdoor enthusiasts and eventually all of mankind. Andy Black’s latest contribution to the world of horror comes some six years after his last effort. During that time he has assembled a mixed bag of articles ranging from musings on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the political views represented by the two versions of The Thing, torture horror, zombies, and a treatise on feminist film theory as it relates to the horror field. While consistency is a problem with Necronomicon Book 5 (some essays are light years ahead of others), it remains ultimately an enjoyable and readable book.
I’m not exactly sure what Black’s aim with this book was, as it mixes academic works with that of fans with little training. Not that there is anything wrong with fan tributes – hell, every academic starts as a fan of the genre but the fan essays tend to have less depth and don’t shed as much light on the subject.
