Think about how competitive the Emmy race is: There are so many excellent shows that deserve attention yet fail to make the nomination cut because they’re either not considered one of the frontrunners or they air on a broadcast network. That’s rough.
Now, imagine being a critically acclaimed drama on a premium network/streaming hybrid in a season where the drama race is pretty wide open. You’ve got big stars, high production values and well-known source material. Shoo-in, right?
Not if you’ve been canceled. (Cue sad trombone sound effect.) That’s the unfortunate fate of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” the HBO series executive produced by Adam McKay that continued to earn raves in Season 2 for its heightened, not-quite-accurate-but-entertainingly-close-enough take on the 1980s rise of the “Showtime”-era Los Angeles Lakers. “Winning Time” should be in the awards conversation … but wound up getting canceled in September.

It was just a few weeks ago we reported S. Craig Zahler had two potential features lined up, one was of his long-in-the-works script for The Big Stone Grid, which Michael Mann was once attached to. The other was an original project he was hoping to get financed. It looks like the latter one is moving ahead and we have the first details today.
Zahler will next direct the crime thriller The Bookie & the Bruiser, featuring a reteam with his Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete star Vince Vaughn, who will star alongside Adrien Brody. Here’s the synopsis: “The Bookie & the Bruiser is set in 1959 New York City and features a pensive, Jewish fellow named Rivner and an oversized Italian-American tough named Boscolo from the Lower East Side, both of whom served overseas in World War II and returned changed men who no longer fit inside the lives they’d left behind.

It’s no secret that the most famous character of Steven Spielberg movies is, undoubtedly, Dr. Henry Walton Jones, more known as Indiana Jones. The witty and inventive nature of the fictional professor of archaeology was well-demonstrated by Harrison Ford, who portrayed the iconic hero in all of the franchise's movies.
However, almost nobody knows that this character, written by the Star Wars father and Spielberg’s close friend, George Lucas, took a lot from a little-known action hero from the 1964 French-Italian movie, giving a lot of inspiration to filmmakers.
It starts by presenting the determined Adrien (played by Jean-Paul Belmondo), who embarks on a trip with his fiancée Agnès (Françoise Dorléac), the archaeologist’s daughter, who knows the location of the stolen Amazonian statuette of great value.
This knowledge becomes the reason why Agnès gets kidnapped, and it forces Adrien to do his best not only to save her,...

Alice Diop’s Saint Omer brings the French filmmaker into the realm of fiction for the first time, but preserves her documentary respect for the evidence of the audience’s eyes. A sober, pared-down courtroom drama, Saint Omer initially makes little effort to comment on its action, at times feeling more like presentation than representation. The unadorned quality of the film can be laborious, particularly in the early stretches of the trial that’s at the center of the story, but Diop earns the effort she asks of her audience, methodically allowing a strange, intangible, but nevertheless palpable mix of emotions to emerge from the situation itself.
It’s certainly a choice, and the expression of an ethos, that Diop keeps the viewer locked in to repeating pairs of alternating camera angles for significant portions of the trial. We see the defendant, Laurence Coly (Guslagie Malanda), a Senegalese immigrant and...

"Are you afraid to fail? Or are you afraid to fight?" Netflix has revealed their own official trailer for their release of Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Movie, an animated movie based on the French TV series "Miraculous." The film opened in theaters this week in France & Germany. Netflix will release this in the US and other countries later in July. Ordinary teenager Marinette's life in Paris goes superhuman when she becomes Ladybug. Bestowed with magical powers of creation, Ladybug must unite with her opposite, Cat Noir, to save Paris as a new villain unleashes chaos unto the city. Another superhero vs supervillain story, this one featuring some of the most generic 3D animation that just doesn't fit in anymore (especially with Mutant Mayhem and Across the Spider-Verse out there). Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Movie stars the voices of Cristina Vee Valenzuela (as Marinette / Ladybug), Bryce Papenbrook (as...

As a way of settling disputes and safe-guarding honour duels provided a quick fix for the participants with no way back. The practise incredibly was only abandoned in France after the Second World War.
Although armed duels were deemed illegal they still took place anyway as way of seeking justice or revenge. Whatever else they were a radical way of preserving honour.
For his fourth feature as a director Vincent Perez rolls back the years to Paris in 1887 with the spectre of the First World War looming on the horizon. There were self-imposed rules to be observed, adjudicated by a tribunal.
The main protagonists are Clément Lacaze (the arresting presence of Roschdy Zem) who is a sword-master and instructor at a fencing school who tries to dissuade his nephew Adrien (Damien Bonnard) from taking part in a duel with the experienced Colonel Berchère (played by the agile Perez).

Clean
A pared down, gritty action thriller set to make quite an impact on audiences, Clean is notable as the writing début of its star, Adrien Brody. Its other writer, and director, is Paul Solet, whose first feature, Grace, wowed audiences in 2009 and who has been building up his reputation ever since. The two met on the set of Bullet Head in 2017, and it’s with that film that I began my recent conversation with Paul, in which he discussed his partnership with Adrien, what they hoped to achieve with Clean, and the technical challenges involved in bringing it to the screen.
“We really got along well on Bullet Head and we have very similar sensibilities and tastes,” he says of his collaborator. “We definitely knew right away we wanted to do something else together, so we started spitballing. Adrien had had a notion for a long time...
