André 3000’s debut solo album, New Blue Sun, is out now via Epic Records. Stream it on Apple Music or Spotify below.
The eight-song improvisational instrumental album is different from what fans might be expecting from the OutKast rapper: completely bar-free and no beats. Alongside the jazz musings of co-producer Carlos Niño, core sounds on the record include guitar, synth, and live sampling courtesy of Nate Mercereau, with Surya Botofasina on keyboards and synthesizers. André 3000 himself plays a variety of different wind instruments, including a digital wind instrument, a Maya flute, and others made of wood and bamboo.
“I’ve been interested in winds for a long time, so it was just a natural progression for me to go into flutes,” André said in a statement. “I just like messing with instruments and I gravitated mostly toward wind.”

Calls for André 3000 to release a solo record, or another recording with Outkast, have followed the musician for nearly two decades. It’s been 17 years since the last Outkast album, and the expectations around his musical output have only grown in that time — meanwhile, he has been roaming around various cities puttering around with his flute. That meandering has brought André 3000 to New Blue Sun, his debut solo album, set for release on Friday, Nov. 17.

André 3000 has announced the release of his long-awaited debut album, New Blue Sun, which will arrive on November 17th.
Right up front, however the OutKast rapper warns fans that the album is not a rap record. The cover artwork says as much, as it includes a label warning that the album contains “no bars.” Instead, according to NPR Music, New Blue Sun is an 87-minute collection of minimalist and experimental music featuring André 3000 playing a variety of flutes and other wind instruments. There are no bars, no beats, no vocals.
“I don’t want to troll people. I don’t want people to think, Oh, this André 3000 album is coming! And you play it and like, ‘Oh man, no verses,’ André 3000 said in an interview with NPR. “So even actually on the packaging, you’ll see it says, ‘Warning: no bars.’ It’s letting you know what it is off the top.

The story goes that back in the late 60s, a dynamic anime director in Japan made a very ambitious movie that bombed at the box office. Shelved in the company archives, the film escaped a warehouse fire and became the stuff of legend. At least it is to two anime fans in Oklahoma, best friends Shawn and Vik. It’s 1999, the turn of the century, and the eve of 2000 and the frenzy surrounding Y2K. Vik’s family, the Ghandi’s, have taken in Miki, a Japanese student for the holidays. Obsessed with Native Indian culture, she thought she was coming to stay with an American Indian family, not the Gandhis. When life gives you lemons. Shawn has found a bootleg DVD copy of the...

Jacob Chansley, also known as the QAnon Shaman, was sentenced to 41 months in prison on Wednesday for his role in the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.
The sentence, tied for the biggest yet to be handed down for any of the nearly 700 people charged as a result of the riot, comes a week after federal prosecutors recommended Chansley serve 51 months for his role in the breach of the Capitol. The prosecution described Chansley as the “face” of the riot. “The defendant was among the first 30 rioters to penetrate the U.

It’s always a letdown when shows don’t get to shine. Even worse is when a series shows so much potential, but gets canceled after only one season. Many of them go on to become cult classics, but we still have to wonder what could’ve happened if they went on for longer. C’est la vie.

The Baz Luhrmann Netflix series about the rise of hip-hop contains great music and set pieces that make it easy to binge-watch and enjoy. That’s not including the great leads, which instill the characters with an electrifying innocence and humanity. However, the streaming service canceled it after one season.

Decision week for Oscar voters always stirs waves of pontification, but, having reached 2020, it may be useful to take a page from Tom Hanks’ ambitious CNN documentary The Movies. He decided to group movies by the decade, not just by the year, to assess what each period told us about our pop culture.
Arguably, the best movies of 2010-2020 bridged the gap between documentary and fiction in an effort to uncover the truth. Hence, while superhero fantasies captured the box office, the major awards were heaped on fact-based films like The Hurt Locker, Spotlight, Argo or 12 Years a Slave. In this vein, the emergence of Parasite as an Oscar favorite this year carried a certain inevitability.
All this represented a sharp change from the films of the previous decade, its winners then reflecting a bleary sentimentalism — Crash, Slumdog Millionaire, Million Dollar Baby, etc. Some gurus cite 2009 as a transition year,...

The three-part anthology series Intrigo, based on Swedish writer Hakan Nesser’s thriller novels, will be released next year, starting with the first movie Intrigo: Death of an Author which stars Ben Kingsley and will arrive in select theaters and On Demand on January 17 from Lionsgate.
Here’s the intriguing trailer:
People magazine calls it “one of the most unique storytelling experiences hitting theaters in 2020.” Set in northern Europe, the trio of films all deal with intimate portraits of crime.
Based on the global best-seller by Hakan Nesser and starring Academy Award® winner Ben Kingsley (Ghandi), this tense, riveting thriller will keep you guessing. After an author named David plots the seemingly accidental murder of his wife, her body is never recovered, and he’s convinced that she’s still alive. Meanwhile, as David translates the final novel by a writer who also died mysteriously, he finds himself attracted to the man’s sultry widow.

Schoolboy Q examines the repercussions of vengeance and the cyclical nature of violence in his stark new video for “Dangerous.” The Kid Cudi-assisted track appears on the rapper’s Crash Talk, which was released in April.
In the Alexandre Moors-directed clip, Schoolboy Q and his associate are sitting in a car on a deserted street as the song’s minor key, warbled melody kicks in. As the song about living a dangerous lifestyle and using mind-altering intoxicants as a means to escape unfurls, the visuals find Schoolboy Q and...

BAFTA has presented Special Awards to longstanding Film4 executive Sue Bruce-Smith and DoP Roger Pratt (Batman). Bruce-Smith, Deputy Director at Film4, was recognized with a Special Award for her outstanding contribution to British cinema with speakers at a Friday event including former Film4 boss Tessa Ross, BFI Deputy CEO Ben Roberts, producer Gail Egan, and current Film4 boss Daniel Battsek. Bruce-Smith, who has worked on movies including Slumdog Millionaire, 12 Years A Slave, Under The Skin, and The Favourite, said, “Over the last 30 years, from my somewhat fluky start in the business, I have developed a real love of independent film, film’s power and the collaborative process required for its creation. The world seems such a strange place at the moment and the arts – and within that film – has such an important role to play. I am very grateful to BAFTA for this Award and for prompting me to...

Welcome to this week’s Ring of Honor television review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have a lots of great action, with Martha Stewart destroying Cybil Shephard’s career and Edward Norton lamenting not having Bruce Willis’s bank account, as well a special message from Christopher Walken! Let’s jump into the Ring of Honor!
Match #1: Kushida beat Johnathan Gresham
This was as exciting an opening match as you’ll get in this day and age. These two were like watching a mirror clash with itself, as these two have an offensive strategy that is nearly identical. The wrestling here was very well paced and a stark contrast from a lot of what Ring of Honor usually books. The big surprise here is that a tremendous amount of the match is on the mat, with numerous holds flowing into great locks that helped set the right tone.

Veteran actor Lord Richard Attenborough is still recovering in hospital after suffering a knock to the head in December.
The 85-year-old Oscar winner was admitted to St George's Hospital in Tooting, West London on 18 December after he fell and slipped into a coma.
He regained consciousness and was kept under observation by concerned medics throughout the Christmas period.
It was initially thought that the Ghandi filmmaker had been released - with recent reports suggesting doctors had deemed him well enough to return home.
But a representative for the star confirms Attenborough remains in the medical facility, two months after the accident - but is slowly getting better.
A spokeswoman for Lord Attenborough tells WENN, "He is still in the hospital but he is fine. It's just where he is staying for the time being. But he is very steady and is making good progress."...
