Mumbai, May 22 (Ians) As his team slumped to an eight-wicket defeat with 12 deliveries to spare despite putting up a total of 200/5, Sunrisers Hyderabad chief coach Brian Lara said they were outmuscled on a belter at the Wankhede Stadium.
Srh made a great start thanks to blazing half-centuries by openers Vivrant Sharma (69) and Mayank Agarwal (83) as they shared a 140-run opening partnership. But just when it looked like the openers would go for their respective centuries and help their team to a massive total, Akash Madhwal claimed a four-wicket haul by Akash Madhwal (4-37) to restrict them to 200/5.
Mumbai Indians chased down the challenging target thanks to a brilliant maiden T20 century by Cameron Green (100 not out) and a chance-filled half-century by skipper Rohit Sharma (56) as they reached 201/2 in 18 overs.
Lara said such a result was not unexpected on the typical Wankhede wicket as 200 has been chased quite a few times here.

Hyderabad, May 13 (Ians) At 89/2 in 13 overs and with the asking rate in excess of 13, chasing down 183 was looking very bleak for Lucknow Super Giants. With the equation reading 94 off 42 balls, the second time-out was taken, as Lucknow stared at defeat.
Post that, Prerak Mankad, Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis changed gears in a display of unbelievable big-hitting to take the side to a seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad with four balls to spare at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Saturday.
On a pitch with some turn for spinners, where Krunal Pandya took 2-24, Mankad top-scored with an unbeaten 64 off 45 balls to be the anchor of the chase, Pooran was at his blazing best to be 44 not out off 13 balls while Stoinis made up for a slow start to score 40 off 25 balls.
Stoinis and Pooran were pivotal in turning the course of the match, smashing 31 runs in the 16th over bowled by Abhishek Sharma.

New Delhi, April 30 (Ians) Former Australian all-rounder Tom Moody reckoned that Delhi Capitals (DC) made a tactical mistake by sending Axar Patel down at number seven during their run chase against SunRisers Hyderabad (Srh) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
DC failed to chase down the 198-run target as they were restricted to 188/6 in 20 overs. Mayank Markande led from the front with the ball with an excellent spell of 4-0-20-2 as Srh bowlers bounced back hard and survived Phil Salt (59 off 35) and Mitchell Marsh’s blitzes (63 off 39) to break the three-match losing streak on Saturday night.
Axar was sent in to bat after the likes of Priyam Garg and Sarfaraz Khan, both of whom were dismissed cheaply and remained unbeaten on 29 off 14 balls. With 49 needed off 18, Axar smacked a six off Bhuvneshwar and took 14 off the 18th over. With 35 needed off 12, Natarajan bowled another excellent over as he nailed...

Hyderabad, April 9 (Ians) Skipper Shikhar Dhawan played an extraordinary lone hand for Punjab Kings, smashing an unbeaten 99 as he batted through the innings but a four-fer by debutant leggie Mayank Markande saw Sunrisers Hyderahad restricting them to a below-par 143-9 in 20 overs here on Sunday.
Pbks lost wickets in quick succession and landed in a precarious situation at 88/9 before Dhawan launched a brilliant rearguard assault to pull them through to a respectable total. Dhawan batted through the innings to give his side a decent score.
At one time, it looked like Punjab may not even reach 100, but Dhawan had other ideas as he went after the bowling, shielding last-man Mohit Rathee (1 not out) to add 55 runs for the last-wicket partnership off 31 deliveries.

Lucknow, April 7 (Ians) Krunal Pandya’s all-round show first helped the Lucknow Super Giants to restrict Sunrisers Hyderabad to 121/8 on a sluggish black-soil pitch in tenth match of Ipl 2023 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Friday.
Pandya then chipped in with 34 off 23 balls and shared a 55-run partnership off 38 balls for the third wicket with captain K.L. Rahul, who top-scored with 35, to complete chase of 122 with four overs to spare and take the side to a comfortable five-wicket victory. Their second victory at home meant Lucknow are the new table-toppers in the ten-team competition.

Hyderabad, April 1 (Ians) Sunday afternoon’s clash will see two former champions Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals face-off at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. With equal firepower in both batting and bowling, stage is set for a high-octane clash between two teams that look strong on paper.
With Bhuvneshwar Kumar leading the side for his team’s opening game in Ipl 2023 as Aiden Markram is on international duty, he felt the bowling attack has a lot of experience in them, including tearaway pacer Umran Malik, whose stocks have risen since bursting through in 2021 edition of the tournament.

Hyderabad, March 30 (Ians) India’s senior fast-bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be captaining Sunrisers Hyderabad (Srh) in their opening match of Ipl 2023 against Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on April 2, in absence of newly-appointed regular skipper Aiden Markram.
A report in ESPNCricinfo says Markram is in South Africa for the upcoming two-match Odi series against the Netherlands and is expected to arrive in India along with his other Ipl-bound national side teammates only on April 3.
“The series is crucial for South Africa’s direct qualification for the Odi World Cup, to be played in India later this year. They need to win both ODIs against the Netherlands (without over-rate penalties) and then hope Ireland lose at least one Odi against Bangladesh in a three-match home series in May,” it added.
With Markram to miss Srh’s opening game in Ipl 2023, Bhuvneshwar will be the captain. Bhuvneshwar has...

After K.L Rahul gave India a good start with his 35-ball 51, his second consecutive fifty in the tournament, and Suryakumar Yadav smacked a whirlwind 61 not out off just 25 balls, they reached a mammoth 186/5 in 20 overs, the bowlers made short work of the Zimbabwe batters to bowl them out for 115 in 17.2 overs.
It meant India finished on top of Group 2 with eight points and will meet England in the second semifinal at Adelaide Oval on November 10, while Pakistan will face off against New Zealand in the first semifinal at Sydney Cricket Ground on November 9.

Adelaide, Nov 2 (Ians) India survived a Litton Das scare and rain interruption to go on top of Group 2 table with a tense five-run win over Bangladesh in their Super 12 match of Men’s T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.
After fifties from Kl Rahul and Virat Kohli (64 not out) took India to a massive 184/6 in 20 overs, Bangladesh seemed to be cruising to the target with Das making a stunning 27-ball 60 as they reached 66 for no loss in the first seven overs.
But rain changed the equation to 151 in 16 overs. The rain break worked well in India’s favour as Rahul’s brilliant run-out of Das post rain break triggered a Bangladesh meltdown as they could make only 79 runs in the remaining nine overs, losing six wickets.

Melbourne, Oct 23 (Ians) Long before Virat Kohli dished out a chasing masterclass of 82 not out off 53 balls in India’s incredible four-wicket win over Pakistan in their first Super 12 match of Men’s T20 World Cup at a sell-out Melbourne Cricket Ground, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya played crucial roles with their respective three-fers in keeping Pakistan to 159/8.
Last month, Arshdeep was viciously trolled on social media for dropping Asif Ali’s catch in a tense Super Four match between the two teams at Asia Cup in Dubai. On Sunday, with the desire to make his team win, Arshdeep swung the early momentum in India’s favour.
After Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceded just a wide in his opening over and found some swing, Arshdeep bowled a perfect first delivery in T20 World Cup debut by trapping Babar Azam lbw for a golden duck with a full, straight delivery coming in from over the wicket.

Melbourne, Oct 21 (Ians) Renowned coach and former Australia cricketer Tom Moody has picked Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh as his choice of fast-bowling options in India’s bowling attack in their Super 12 opener of the Icc T20 World Cup against Pakistan at the McG on Sunday.
While Bhuvneshwar and Arshdeep have been regular fixtures in India’s matches since July, Shami made a late entry into the squad as a replacement for an injured Jasprit Bumrah. Shami, who missed out on bilateral T20Is against Australia and South Africa due to Covid-19 infection, took three wickets in the final over, including bowling consecutive pin-point yorkers on the last two balls, for India to win their first warm-up match by six runs in Brisbane.

Brisbane, Oct 17 (Ians) Mohammed Shami made a surprise entry and picked up three wickets in the final over as India beat defending champions Australia by six runs in their first warm-up match of the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup at The Gabba on Monday.
After fifties from Kl Rahul (57) and Suryakumar Yadav (50) helped India post a challenging 186/7 in their 20 overs, Australia needed 16 runs off the last two overs to successfully chase down the total.
But Harshal Patel conceded only five runs in a superb 19th over and picked up the wicket of captain Aaron Finch, who top-scored with a 54-ball 76, apart from a brilliant run-out of Tim David by Virat Kohli’s direct hit.
Shami was then a surprise pick to bowl the final over after having not bowled in the entire match and made his mark by having Pat Cummins caught at long-on, thanks to a phenomenal one-handed catch by Kohli at long-on.

The duo of Rohit and Dravid took over from Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri after the last year’s T20 World Cup, where the team had a disastrous campaign. Under the current team management, India have seen a fair amount of success in bilateral T20I series but the Asia Cup debacle has given them a wake up call.
When Dravid and Rohit took the charge, they talked about the positive approach and intent, which has been clearly visible in the team’s style of play in T20Is in recent times.
"We’ve made a decision after the last T20 World Cup where we sat down as a group and decided to play more positively. We believe we have the quality as a group to play more aggressively, we’ve been able to do that without being bowled out too often," Dravid said about India’s aggressive batting approach,...

The Indian men’s cricket team has been found wanting on this front in most of the editions of the T20 World Cup since lifting the trophy in the inaugural edition of the event in 2007.
So, stitching together such consistent performance has been the bane of the Indian team, not only in the T20 World Cups but practically in all tournaments in the last many years.
And therefore, producing consistent performance and consecutive wins will be the biggest challenge for Rohit Shrama’s team when at the 2022 Icc Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia starting on with preliminary round matches this Sunday (October 16).
The Indian team will get into action in the Super 12 stage with a high-octane encounter with arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23. India are in Group 2 in the Super 12 stage with Bangladesh, South Africa and two qualifiers besides Pakistan in this stage.
Group 1 comprises Australia, England, New Zealand and Afghanistan besides two qualifiers.

Mumbai, Oct 13 (Ians) With Jasprit Bumrah, and Deepak Chahar out of action due to injuries, the Indian pace bowling unit’s hopes has now on Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh.
However, former Pakistan pace legend Wasim Akram feels that Bhuvneshwar Kumar might struggle in the Australian conditions if the ball is not swinging and thus may not be as effective. Bhuvneshwar is the most experienced bowler in that squad with vast experience in white-ball cricket.
“India have Bhuvneshwar Kumar, he is good with the new ball, but with his pace, if the ball is not swinging, he will probably struggle there. But he is a very good bowler no doubt, swings both ways, has the yorker. But you need pace in Australia,” Akram was quoted as saying by Khaleej Times.
“You see that guy from Kashmir, Umran Malik, he is quick. India need to stick with him because he has got pace.

New Delhi, Sep 30 (Ians) As of now, there is a lot of uncertainty and confusion over the availability of India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah for the Men’s T20 World Cup, starting next month in Australia.
Some media reports state that Bumrah has a serious stress fracture in the back, which will keep him out of the game for four to six months. On the other hand, there are some speculations which say that the pacer might just make it to the World Cup if his recurrence of back injury may not be serious in nature and requires healing time of four to six weeks.
With the changes to squads subject to the approval of International Cricket Council (Icc) can happen till October 15, India still have some arsenal in their pace attack and have time in hand to see how can the big gap left by Bumrah’s potential absence...

New Delhi, Sep 28 (Ians) Former India men’s wicketkeeper-batter and ex-member of the senior selection committee Saba Karim believes that the hosts’ may look to utilise young left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh in middle and death overs phase during the T20I series against South Africa.
Of late, India’s bowling in the death overs phase has been a cause of concern, especially with senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar leaking runs, Arshdeep’s addition to the playing eleven for the series against South Africa can help the Rohit Sharma-led side solve that problem area.
Arshdeep shot into national reckoning with his searing yorkers in pressure situations of the death overs phase in Ipl 2022 for his side Punjab Kings. Bhuvi did that well in patches but in the last few matches, his bowling has not been up to the mark, especially in the death overs as India have conceded a lot of runs in the last part of the innings.
In the two matches that he got to play against Australia, Bhuvneshwar gave away 31 runs (15 and 16 runs) in the two overs he bowled in the death overs in the first match of the series at Mohali.
He was dropped for the Nagpur match but was brought back in the third at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Sunday.
But his troubles continued as the seasoned pacer from Uttar Pradesh conceded 21 runs in his final over.

Australia got off to a blazing start and ended in whirlwind fashion but the Indians did well in the middle overs to peg them back.
Green (52 off 21 balls) gave the innings the early momentum as he blasted the third fastest fifty for Australia in T20 cricket, racing to his half-century off 19 deliveries while David, the big-hitter who started his career with Singapore before moving to Australia, gave the innings the much-needed push towards the end as Australia recovered from 117/6 in 14th over to post a respectable total.
Tim David and Daniel Sams raised 68 runs for the seventh wicket off 34 balls as Australia went for the leather in the final four overs, hitting 21 runs off the 18th over by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and 18 off the 19th bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. But Harshal Patel bowled a superb final over, conceding only 7 runs and sent back the dangerous David as Australia ended with 187/7 in their 20 overs.

The 32-year-old Bhuvneshwar, who has been one of India’s best bowlers in the last one decade or so, has seen repeated failures at crucial junctures of the game in last few outings and his credentials as a proven death bowler has taken a big hit ahead of the all-important T20 World Cup.
Whether it was games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Asia Cup 2022 or the first T20I against Australia, India have lost these three matches batting first and defending 41, 42 and 54 runs in the last four overs and the common factor in all of these matches was — ordinary performance of Bhuvneshwar, who conceded 19, 14 and 16 runs in the 19th overs.
"Everyone is talking about Bhuvi. Let him be ‘yaar’. He is one of the best that Indian cricket has ever seen. Look at his records, from his maiden international match against Pakistan to even now, he has been doing very well.

Mohali, Sep 21 (Ians) Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar stated that senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar being taken for plenty of runs at the death overs is “an area of concern” for India, with the Men’s T20 World Cup to begin in Australia from next month.
In their last three T20Is where India have looked to defend and failed to do so, Bhuvneshwar has conceded 16, 14 and 19 runs (in Tuesday’s four-wicket loss to Australia in first T20I) in the 19th overs, enabling the visitors to pull off a chase of 209 with four balls to spare. In the penultimate over in T20Is this year, Bhuvneshwar has leaked 97 runs at an economy rate of 12.12.

“Somebody like a Bhuvneshwar Kumar is going for so many runs every single time, when he is expected. In 18 deliveries he has bowled in three matches which Indian have lost against Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and now Australia,...

Mohali, Sep 21 (Ians) Despite fifties from Hardik Pandya and Kl Rahul in India’s 208/6 in the first T20I against Australia at Mohali, the hosts couldn’t defend the huge total. The thrashing of senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar by the Australian batters in the death overs has re-ignited concerns over India’s bowling having the arsenal to do well in the death overs.
In their last three T20Is where India have looked to defend and failed to do so, Bhuvneshwar has conceded 16, 14 and 19 runs (in the first T20I against Australia) in the 19th over.
With Harshal Patel ineffective with his slower balls and giving away 49 runs in his four overs, including 22 runs in the 18th over, much was expected from Bhuvneshwar to contain the run-flow in the 19th over, which he failed to do.

Despite scoring 208 runs against Australia in the first T20I match of the series, India lost the match with four balls remaining as Cameron Green and Matthew Wade smashed the Indian bowlers all-around the park on Tuesday.
However, it wasn’t a rare occurrence, rather it is becoming a genuine threat for Indian bowling now, especially in death overs. Whether it was games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Asia Cup 2022 or the first T20I against Australia, India have lost these three matches batting first and defending 41, 42 and 54 runs in the last four overs.
The common factor in all of these matches is — ordinary performance of Bhuvneshwar, conceding 19, 14 and 16 runs in the 19th overs.
Why did India give Bhuvi the 19th over and what’s going wrong?
One can argue that why captain Rohit Sharma is trusting the 32-year old pacer to bowl the crucial 19th overs, if he is not able to deliver?...

New Delhi, Sep 13 (Ians) On Monday, India announced their squad for the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, starting from next month. Compared to last year’s edition in the UAE and Oman, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid will be captain and coach respectively.
Despite not making it to the final of Asia Cup 2022 in the UAE, India’s squad was largely expected to have no surprises, big or small.
From the squad which went to Asia Cup 2022, the pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel come back after recovering from injuries and passing fitness tests. The duos return is a big boost for India, especially when the bowling attack lacked teeth in Asia Cup.
India’s trust over young left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was seen when he was retained in the 15-man squad, with Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Shami slotted in as reserve players.

Mumbai, Sep 12 (Ians) India on Monday announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming Icc Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, with fit-again Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, making their comeback.
India’s squad for the World Cup in Australia is largely along expected lines and have only few changes from the fifteen, who took part in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022.
Both Bumrah and Harshal had missed the multi-nation tournament in the UAE due to respective injuries and their return for the marquee event will bolster the team’s fast bowling ranks. Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the other two pacers in the squad, along with the all-rounder Hardik Pandya.
However, the squad led by Rohit Sharma will miss the services of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who sustained a right knee injury during the Asia Cup and recently underwent a surgery. Left-hander Axar Patel will step in as a like-for-like replacement for Jadeja.

New Delhi, Sep 11 (Ians) Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar feels that including pacer Deepak Chahar will be beneficial for the Rohit Sharma-led side in the Men’s T20 World Cup to be held in Australia in October-November.
Chahar, who had recently returned from a long injury layoff in the Odi tour of Zimbabwe in August, was named as fellow fast bowler Avesh Khan’s replacement ahead of India’s final match in Super Four stage of 2022 Asia Cup, going wicketless for 28 runs in his four overs.
Chahar featured in two of India’s three matches on tour of Zimbabwe, picking five wickets, including 3/27 in his comeback match at Harare. He was named as one of the standbys in the squad and had travelled to Dubai with the Indian team for the tournament, where he was seen putting the hard yards in practice sessions.

At the Asia Cup, in absence of injured Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, the Indian fast bowlers looked flat, lacked that penetration and killer instinct — required to seize crucial moments in a big game. Against slightly weaker opponents, they seemed to do a decent job but when quality batters put them under pressure, they faltered.
As always, the experienced campaigner Bhuvneshwar Kumar looked lethal with the new ball in the Asia Cup except the one game against Sri Lanka. But, his poor outing in the 19th over in the two consecutive games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka (he leaked 19 and 14 runs), cost India the game.
There is no doubt that Bhuvneshwar has evolved as a death bowler over a period of time and also fetched success both in Ipl and at the international level. But, the lack of pure pace does not make him as feared as someone like Bumrah,...

Dubai, Sep 8 (Ians) Already out of the tournament, India signed off from Asia Cup 2022 on a high with a 101-run thrashing of Afghanistan in their final Super Four match at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday.
In a dead rubber, talismanic batter Virat Kohli gave Indian fans tons of reasons to be happy. As captain Rohit Sharma was rested, Kohli was promoted to open the batting. What followed next was something which anyone could have predicted, leaving Kohli himself surprised.
Kohli ended his drought of not scoring a century in international cricket for 1020 days with a sensational career-best 122 off just 61 balls, laced with 12 fours and six sixes, at a strike-rate of 200.
After a rollicking opening stand of 119 off 76 balls, with stand-in captain Kl Rahul making 65 of those runs, Kohli accelerated amazingly from 59 off 40 balls to get his next 63 runs off just 21 balls to score a long-standing 71st international century. On...

Dubai, Sep 8 (Ians) Senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar blew the top-order away with his skillful bowling to record his career-best T20I figures as India beat Afghanistan by 101 runs in a dead-rubber match of Super Four stage in Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday.
After Virat Kohli ended his drought of not scoring a century in international cricket for 1020 days with a sensational career-best 122 off just 61 balls to power India to 212/2, Bhuvneshwar’s spell of 5/4 dismantled the Afghanistan challenge, restricting them to 111/8 in 20 overs.
Bhuvneshwar was right on the money from the word go, shaping one back in to trap Hazratullah Zazai lbw. Two balls later, he produced an absolute jaffa to shatter Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s stumps to send both openers back to pavilion in the opening over.
Swinging the ball both ways and relentlessly pitching in right areas, Bhuvneshwar was making Afghanistan batters dance to his tunes.

Dubai, Sep 8 (Ians) Senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar on Thursday became the leading Indian wicket-taker in T20Is with his 84th wicket in the shortest format during his team’s game against Afghanistan in Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Stadium, here.
The 32-year old pacer surpassed leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s tally of 83 wickets and finished with brilliant figures of 5/4 from his four overs.

Dubai, Sep 8 (Ians) Former India cricketer Rohan Gavaskar reckons that despite senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar going for runs in the death overs of matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Asia Cup 2022, it doesn’t take away from the things he did for the side in the past.
In successive matches, Bhuvneshwar has been far from his best in death overs in Super Four of Asia Cup 2022. Against Pakistan in Dubai, he gave away 19 runs in the penultimate over as India couldn’t defend 181.
Against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, despite India picking four wickets for 13 runs in the middle overs, Bhuvneshwar conceded 14 runs in the penultimate over. He was smashed for fours on overpitched deliveries apart from conceding a brace of wides as Sri Lanka were able to chase down 174 with a ball to spare.

Just as was the case in their five-wicket loss to Pakistan, the defending champions were unable to defend their score of 173/8, losing with a ball to spare and leaving their hopes of reaching the Asia Cup 2022 final at the outcome of other matches, including on Wednesday’s match between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Ians takes a look at the reasons where India lost the plot to Sri Lanka and find themselves now on the brink of elimination from Asia Cup 2022:
Top-order struggle:
In last year’s T20 World Cup in the UAE, India were undone by facing left-arm pace bowling and spin in early stage of their innings. The same story was repeated against Sri Lanka. Off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana had trapped Kl Rahul lbw in the second over.
In the next over, left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka got one to come in and shatter Virat Kohli’s stumps for nought. India...
