“It has been a long time,” James Widdoes shares about earning his first-ever Emmy nomination after over 40 years in the business. The director received the recognition for his work on the final season of the CBS comedy “Mom,” a series he has worked on since its debut back in 2013. “It’s obviously a tremendous honor and thrill to be nominated,” he continues, adding that “Mom” is one of his “proudest” accomplishments because “it tackled serious subjects while at the same time it could be screamingly funny.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Widdoes directed an impressive 123 episodes of “Mom” over its eight-season run. He submitted the episode “Scooby-Doo Checks and Salisbury Steak” for Emmy consideration, which finds Allison Janney’s Bonnie Plunkett helping her therapist (Rainn Wilson) through a challenging personal decision and an unexpected reunion between former couple Jill (Jaime Pressly) and Andy (Will Sasso) during a bank robbery.

After eight seasons, 170 episodes and 10 Emmy nominations, “Mom” comes to a quiet and unexpected end this week. However as the series wraps, there’s no denying the legacy it leaves behind when it comes to the depiction of recovery on television.
When the series first bowed in 2013, co-creator Gemma Baker wanted to expand on what she had previously seen as limited takes on addiction and recovery, with characters that either relapsed at the first sign of trouble or got a happily ever after with no further exploration. “Mom” may have gone through several iterations over the years as the story expanded into an ensemble show, but through it all sobriety itself was always at the center of the story.
“In terms of recovery the characters got to change in a way that you don’t often see on a sitcom,” says Baker. “They got to grow and become different versions of themselves.

“Mom” will last only one season without Anna Farris. CBS is ending the popular comedy after its current eighth season wraps up.
The series finale is currently scheduled for May 6. Faris exited the sitcom ahead of the season last September, which left Allison Janney as the sole star.
“Mom” featured Faris and Janney as mother-daughter duo Christy and Bonnie Plunkett who rekindled their relationship after years of alcohol addiction. Faris’ character was also a single mother of two. “Mom” also stars Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, William Fichtner and Kristen Johnston.
The beginning of this season opened with Bonnie (Janney) and her husband Adam (William Fichtner) having dropped off Christy (Faris) at the airport. Christy, who had been going to law school in Northern California, where the show is set, is now going to Georgetown Law School on a scholarship.

CBS’ praised Mom — the network’s longest-running comedy series on the air — will end its run after the current eighth season. Mom‘s series finale has been set for May 6 in its Thursday 9 p.m. time period.
This is the last season of Mom’s two-year pickup the Chuck Lorre-produced multi-camera comedy received in 2019. Also coming up at the end of this season was the current contract for star Allison Janney, who became the series’ sole lead after the exit of Anna Faris last summer.
Eight seasons in, Mom remains a solid ratings performer and an anchor of CBS’ Thursday comedy block. Currently Mom is CBS’ No. 4 comedy behind The Neighborhood and Lorre’s Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola. (The Neigbrhood and Bob Hearts Abishola were renewed earlier today; a pickup for Young Sheldon is expected.)

(Warning: The following story contains Spoilers regarding Anna Faris’ exit from CBS’ “Mom” from the Season 8 premiere Thursday).

The rest of the episode jumps forward a month to show how Bonnie is adjusting to life without her daughter and roommate. Aside from a few references, mainly about how Christy is struggling with the three-hour difference in time zones (the episode ends with her calling Bonnie at a way-too-early hour). Now that we know Mom Season 8 is coming to CBS in November, the network has dropped some details about the first season without co-lead Anna Faris.
There is still no indication of how Christy will be written out of the series, but we do know the premiere will be titled "Sex Bucket and the Grammar Police."
According to the official press release, "when Bonnie invites the ladies to a slumber party, childhood games reveal adult problems."
In photos released, we see Bonnie (Allison Janney) with Marjorie (Mimi Kennedy), Jill (Jaime Pressly), Tammy (Kristen Johnston), and Wendy (Beth Hall) and a Happy Birthday Tammy sign in the background.
Given that the characters are in a celebratory mood, we're inclined to believe that Christy will get a happy ending away from the series.

2020 has so far taught us to roll with the punches. Earlier this month, Anna Faris announced her unexpected exit from the Emmy-winning CBS comedy Mom. And now, former co-star Allison Janney has returned to the set of the show to keep on keepin' on. On Monday, Sept. 14, Janney, 60, shared a clip of herself and co-stars Mimi Kennedy, Beth Hall and Jaime Pressly all masked up and ready to safely film season eight of the show, in which Janney plays Bonnie. "Hi everyone, we are all back at Mom. It's our first day with the new Covid protocol," Janney said in the clip. "It's a whole new territory but we're excited for season eight to begin!" Of...

Despite Anna Faris exiting Mom ahead of Season 8, production is starting up.
Leading lady, Allison Janney shared a video from the set of the hit CBS comedy, and was surrounded by her co-stars.
As expected, the cast were all donning masks in the video, which makes sense given that there's a pandemic.
“It’s a whole new territory, but we’re excited for Season 8 to begin,” Janney says in the clip.
We still don't know how Faris will be written out of the series, but we do know it's going to change the dynamic of the show in a big way.

In a major shakeup, CBS’ sitcom Mom is losing one of its two title characters. Anna Faris will not be returning to the series for its upcoming eighth season, leaving Allison Janney as the sole lead.
The move is surprising. Both Faris and Janney are in the middle of two-year contracts they signed in spring 2019 after lengthy negotiations. Their new deals secured a two-year renewal for the Chuck Lorre comedy through Season 8.
I hear Faris’ exit was finalized early into the show’s hiatus, and the writers have been writing the new season without her character, Christy. Her absence will be addressed in the upcoming season, which is slated to start production September 14 in Los Angeles.
“The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career,” Farris said. “I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience.

Beth Hall has been acting for quite some time now, however, she might go unnoticed as she is not your average actress. This 61-year-old is easily unrecognizable and it is difficult to pick her out from a large crowd. You might have seen her movies but would still ask Betty who? Regardless, she continues to shine her light with her newest role on the hit series Mom where she plays a supporting role of the character Wendy who is a very emotional person. You can catch her in action as she brings a fresher twist to friendship and real-life situations.

CBS has renewed praised comedy series Mom for a sixth season. The pickup makes it a clean sweep for top comedy producer Chuck Lorre, with all three of his CBS shows already renewed for next season five weeks before the May upfronts.
