When he took over as manager of First Division team Crystal Palace (for
whom he had briefly played) in December 2003, they were widely tipped
for relegation at the end of the season; Dowie turned the club's
fortunes around and guided them to the Premiership through the
play-offs - beating another of his old teams, the heavily-tipped West
Ham United, in the Final.
